17th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium (April 1, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89659 89659-21664741@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 1, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at the University of Michigan presents the 17th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium: Racial Justice and Anti-Racist Research in EEB. We are delighted to announce that our featured speaker, Steward Pickett, distinguished urban ecologist from the Cary Institute and this year’s eminent ecologist of the Ecological Society of America, will open the symposium. A panel discussion led by Nicholas Reo, Associate Professor of Native American Studies at Dartmouth will bring the symposium to its conclusion.

Eight early career scholars who are transforming our discipline through anti-racist and justice-centered research that pushes our understanding of the links between EEB research and society, will present their perspectives in many areas of EEB, such as Global Environmental Change, Genomics and Population Genetics, Urban Ecology and Evolution, Environmental History, STEM Education, Marine Ecology, Water Security, Theoretical Ecology and Evolution, Global Food Systems, and Disease Ecology. The goal of this symposium is to provide a space for the EEB community to think imaginatively about the future of our discipline.

The symposium will begin on Saturday, March 19, 2022 (2 - 6 pm EDT) in-person and live-streamed, followed by three consecutive virtual Fridays (noon - 2 pm EDT) from March 25– April 8, 2022. Two to three participants will present each Friday, followed by a moderated discussion. For the symposium, we consider early career scientists as senior graduate students (who stand to receive their Ph.D. within two years), postdoctoral researchers, faculty or staff scientists within their first or second year, and researchers at equivalent career stages who are not affiliated with an academic institution.

While the symposium presents the work of rising early career scientists, it is open to all (i.e., you don’t have to be in your early career to attend).

Please contact the planning committee with questions: ecss-2022@umich.edu.

REGISTRATION is required for Zoom entry. You will be provided with the link and passcode upon registration. https://myumi.ch/ECSSregister

Organized By: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

The Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series is among the most prestigious international platforms for the presentation of new work on Roman history and culture. The Jerome Lectures are presented at both the American Academy in Rome and the University of Michigan. In 2021, the forty-eighth year of the lecture series, Lynn Meskell (2015 Resident), Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Historic Preservation in the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss the ethics of global heritage and archaeology.

This series, entitled The Ethics of Heritage and Archaeology in Global Perspective, addresses the role of archaeology and heritage within international networks of social and political change from the legacies of colonialism, to Cold War tensions, to the era of neoliberalism. The lectures reveal how the discovery and salvage of sites worldwide has mobilized government, military, and corporate interests, in what Meskell describes as a form of archaeological adventurism. Employing case studies from the Middle East, India, and Europe, Meskell attempts to uncover the dense network of social, political, and economic agendas that are at play in preserving the past.

This series includes four lectures given on different dates. All events will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Palmer Commons, Forum Hall.

Monday, March 28 - Engineering Internationalism: Colonialism, the Cold War and UNESCO’s Victory in Nubia

Wednesday, March 30 - Imperialism, Internationalism and Archaeology in the Un/Making of the Middle East

Friday, April 1 - Saving the World? Reflections on UNESCO’s Mid Century Mission in Conflict

Monday, April 4 - Developing Petra: UNESCO, the World Bank, and America in the Desert

Lynn Meskell is a Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, a Richard D. Green Professor of Anthropology, Professor of Historic Preservation in the Weitzman School of Design, a curator at the Penn Museum, and an AD White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University.

Abstract:
The understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter has challenged physicists for decades. The discovery three years ago of correlated phases and superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene led to the emergence of a new materials platform to investigate strongly correlated physics, namely moiré quantum matter. These systems exhibit a plethora of quantum phases, such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, magnetism, Chern insulators, and more. In this talk, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will review some of the recent advances in the field, focusing on the newest generation of moiré quantum systems, where correlated physics, superconductivity, and other fascinating phases can be studied with unprecedented tunability. He will end the talk with an outlook of some exciting directions in this emerging field.

Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from MIT studies novel condensed-matter systems and is especially well-known for his pioneering work with twisted bilayer graphene.

He has received the 2020 Wolf Prize in Physics and the 2020 Buckley Prize in Condensed Matter Physics, among many other honors.

The usual pandemic-related caveats apply, but we are currently anticipating an in-person lecture and a remote feed as well.

EEB Thursday Virtual Seminar: Insect evolution, with a focus on Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) (April 7, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/85738 85738-21628577@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 7, 2022 4:00pm

Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Abstract
Dragonflies and damselflies, representing the insect order Odonata, are among the earliest flying insects with living (extant) representatives. However, unravelling details of their long evolutionary history, such as egg laying (oviposition) strategies, is impeded by unresolved phylogenetic relationships, an issue particularly prevalent in damselfly families and fossil lineages. Here we present the first transcriptome-based and AHE-based phylogenetic reconstructions of Odonata representing nearly all of the order’s families (except Austropetaliidae and Neopetaliidae). All damselfly families and most dragonfly families are recovered as monophyletic groups. Our Molecular clock estimates suggest that crown-Zygoptera (damselflies) and -Anisoptera (dragonflies) both arose during the late Triassic. Lastly, I briefly will review what we know about population structure in two groups of dragonflies, Neurocordulia and Pantala.

Brief biography
Jessica Ware is an associate curator in invertebrate zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Ware’s research focuses on the evolution of behavioral and physiological adaptations in insects, with an emphasis on how these occur in Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) and Dictyoptera (termites, cockroaches, and mantises). She holds a B.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in Canada, and a Ph.D. from Rutgers, New Brunswick. Ware is the past president of the Worldwide Dragonfly Association and serves as current president of the Entomological Society of America. She was recently awarded a PECASE medal from the U.S. government for her work on insect evolution.

Saturday Morning Physics | A Quantum Hologram for Black Holes (April 9, 2022 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/92720 92720-21694814@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 9, 2022 10:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Saturday Morning Physics

Black holes are massive objects so dense that the gravitational force holds light within a distance called the event horizon. This strong gravitational force also causes black holes to grow as energy is converted into the black holes' mass. Steven Hawking explored this flow of energy bringing the science of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy to black holes. A black-hole's entropy, a thermodynamic measure of the information hidden within the event horizon, is proportional to its surface area. This remarkable finding points to analogies between these spacetime singularities and systems of particles, such as gasses. In this talk, Professor Pando Zayas will describe how Quantum Mechanics alters this picture, making corrections to the black-hole entropy that affects black-hole physics.

Abstract
Agricultural settings such as coffee farms function as novel ecosystems, having multiple species that have not interacted with each other at any other point in history and constant human intervention. The ant community on Puerto Rican coffee farms has experienced this novelty, with the most dominant ant species being invasive. S. invicta and W. auropunctata both cause economic loss during the coffee harvest, due to their powerful stings targeting farmworkers while they are in the coffee. W. auropunctata is the most dominant across many farms, while S. invicta is the second most dominant. W. auropunctata is behaviorally passive in comparison to S. invicta, which is much more aggressive when encountering other ants. However, two different Puerto Rican farms, Gran Batey and Casa Pueblo, are seeing two different stages of dominance between W. auropunctata and S. invicta. Phorid flies (Pseudacteon spp.) may be responsible for this difference and for S. invicta not being the dominant ant. Phorid flies are parasitoids that specialize on S. invicta, limiting their competitive abilities in their native ranges. We hypothesize that phorid flies may be mediating the coexistence of the two species, ultimately allowing W. auropunctata to be the dominant ant. In this study, we conduct a disturbance survey and foraging survey to assess when and where phorids are most active and compare this activity between Gran Batey and Casa Pueblo. We find that phorid fly activity increases throughout the day, with the most activity at 12 p.m. Additionally, we find that Casa Pueblo, who is experiencing W. auropunctata dominance, has more phorid flies and more phorid fly attacks in comparison to Gran Batey which is currently experiencing S. invicta dominance. We conclude that phorid flies cause trait-mediated indirect effects (TMIE) on S. invicta, allowing them to coexist with the rest of the ant community on Puerto Rican coffee farms.

Between the Carceral University and Police-Free Futures (April 13, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94235 94235-21726183@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 13, 2022 2:00pm

Organized By: National Center for Institutional Diversity

In the wake of national discourses about the future of policing, many higher education leaders are reconsidering their institution’s relationship to municipal and campus police. As student activists have raised critical questions about campus police department budgets, hiring practices, and whether police are needed as first-responders on college campuses at all, concerns about student safety, campus crime, and conjecture surrounding the universities’ inability to resolve crises if campus police structures are altered have guided institutional responses to growing criticism.

As an attempt to address this social and political moment, Between the Carceral University and Police-Free Futures brings together concerned campus and community stakeholders to discuss the many and varied ways contemporary colleges and universities create the conditions that necessitate policing and prisons. In conversation with professor and director of the Campus Abolition Research Lab, Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III, an interdisciplinary panel will engage the conceptual underpinnings of abolitionist praxis and consider the possibilities for higher and postsecondary education to reimagine itself as a life-affirming institution.

Part of our Research & Community Impact Fellow series, this session is co-sponsored by the Anti-Racism Collaborative, the University of Michigan's strategic space for engagement around anti-racism research and scholarship and part of the provost's anti-racism initiative; the Diversity Scholars Network, a scholarly community committed to advancing understandings of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity, difference, culture, representation, power, oppression, and inequality; and the Campus Abolition Research Lab (CARL).

Moderator: Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III, 2022 Anti-Racism Collaborative Research & Community Impact Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan

Panelists:

Dr. Davarian L. Baldwin, Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Founding Director of the Smart Cities Lab at Trinity College

Kamaria B. Porter, PhD Candidate in Higher Education, and Lab Manager for University Responses to Sexual Assault (URSA) Project in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan

Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).

Abstract
Many Ph.D. students and postdocs at Research-1 (R1) universities are interested in exploring academic careers at non-academic universities, including liberal arts colleges and master's-granting universities. However, resources on how to prepare to be competitive in applications for job openings may be scarce at R1 universities because advising faculty are most familiar with preparation for applying for R1 jobs. I am a professor of biological sciences at a public, master's-granting institution where I have served on numerous tenure-track faculty search committees over the past 18 years. In this presentation, I give attendees practical advice on how to prepare to apply for tenure-track jobs at non-R1 universities, including important experience they should have, how to write the cover letter, teaching statement, research statement, and diversity statement, and advice for phone and on-campus interviews. Though the talk is geared toward graduate students and postdocs, faculty are welcome to attend so that they can better advise students interested in non-R1 jobs.

EEB Special Seminar: Epidemiology at the interface of ecology and evolution (April 25, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94684 94684-21759833@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 25, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The central organizing principle of infectious disease epidemiology is that the patterns of the occurrence of illness within and between populations are explainable by factors attributable to the host, agent, and environment. This is the so-called epidemiological trinity. In this talk I will discuss how epidemiological science has been enriched by increasingly embracing methods from evolutionary biology and ecology, and how realization of a modern pandemic science requires traditional boundaries between disciplines to be dissolved. First, I will illustrate how phylodynamic methods have provided a new view of old, unresolved questions in the epidemiology of HIV. From there I will talk about both the confounding and illuminating role of genetic diversity focusing on within-host diversity in chronic viral infections that can act both as noise and as a type of epidemiological signal. These points will be further illustrated by consideration of recombination as a potential confounding variable in epidemiological studies. Finally, I will discuss two of our ongoing studies that illustrate this new kind of pandemic science: one that attempts to integrate multi-scale (intracellular and epidemiological) dynamics of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in Turkey and Tajikistan with longitudinal field sampling of ticks from small mammals, ungulates, birds in regions with human cases of CCHFV. The second study looks to the future by using the DOE’s Earth System Model to project high-resolution climate change scenarios to predict the future landscape for mosquito borne diseases globally.

EEB Special Seminar: Human and wildlife health through the lens of bat-vector-microbiome interactions (April 27, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94693 94693-21760270@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 27, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Host-pathogen interactions are often viewed solely within the context of the evolution and ecology of these two organisms, but non-pathogenic microorganisms associated with a host or vector also mediate pathogen transmission and infection success. This microbiome, made up of pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms, is therefore integral in understanding host-pathogen dynamics and vector-borne disease ecology. Leveraging natural history collections and field-based systems, I study the interactions between bats, arthropod vectors, and microorganisms using genomics, ecological networks, and machine learning. These host-vector-microbiome interactions provide a model for examining how complex biological communities respond to environmental change and novel disease emergence. Through M-PABI, my future research will continue to build these types of community models, develop collections as One Health resources, and facilitate coordination among institutions, public health professionals, wildlife and pathogen researchers, and communities in zoonotic hot spots. Extending our view of biological communities to include microorganisms is an imperative step towards combating zoonotic events and in maintaining healthy ecosystems. We can harness the information in natural history collections to help us achieve a more holistic approach to spillover prediction and prevention. Becoming Campus Abolitionists (May 5, 2022 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94788 94788-21768310@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 5, 2022 6:00pm

Organized By: National Center for Institutional Diversity

Activists, community organizers, and policymakers have attempted police reform for more than a century. Whether diversifying departments, conducting racial bias training, or implementing community policing, no reform effort has stopped police from harming the public it has pledged to "protect and serve." While these concerns are largely understood outside of higher education, a closer look at the role colleges and universities play in expanding the carceral state reveal a deep, long-standing relationship with the institution of policing.

On May 5, join Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III and Derecka Purnell in conversation as they discuss the policing problem and explore possibilities for police-free futures, on campus and beyond.

Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III, 2022 Anti-Racism Collaborative Research & Community Impact Fellow, Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Campus Abolition Research Lab at the University of Michigan

Derecka Purnell, Lawyer, Organizer, and Author of Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom

This session is co-sponsored by the Campus Abolition Research Lab (CARL); the Anti-Racism Collaborative, a strategic space at the University of Michigan for engagement around anti-racism research and scholarship and part of the provost's anti-racism initiative; and the Diversity Scholars Network, a scholarly community committed to advancing understandings of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity, difference, culture, representation, power, oppression, and inequality.
