The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season has produced incredibly destructive storms, and has raised many questions. What drives a hurricane? How accurate are hurricane models? How do authorities prepare for hurricanes and, when destructive events like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma happen, how do we respond? Is this hurricane season a fluke, or should we start planning for more/similar storms? In this Teach-Out, we will explore the science of hurricanes, hurricane forecasting and monitoring, and with what confidence can we attribute these storms to a warming ocean.

Teach-Outs are short learning experiences, each focused on a specific current issue. Attendees will come together over a few days not only to learn about a subject or event but also to gain skills. Teach-Outs are open to the world and are designed to bring together individuals with wide-ranging perspectives in respectful and deep conversation. These events are an opportunity for diverse learners and a multitude of experts to come together to ask questions of one another and explore new solutions to the pressing concerns of our global community. Come, join the conversation!

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

Gain inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in people. Learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About Glomb's talk:
Many of us have focused on getting a good job. But how many of us have focused on making a job good? So often at work, we bumble through our days in unintentional ways. What could happen if we were more intentional and recognized the power we have to improve our work lives?

University of Minnesota Professor Theresa Glomb is trying to help others create positive experiences at work through growth, happiness, and satisfaction. Ultimately, Theresa’s trying to make work great (or at least a little better). In this unique blend of research, personal stories, and practical disciplines, based on her TEDx talk, she shares with us simple, evidence based micro-interventions to improve our working lives.

About Glomb:
Theresa M. Glomb is the Toro Company-David M. Lilly Chair in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. She received her PhD in social, organizational, and individual differences psychology from the University of Illinois and her BA in psychology from DePaul University.

Her research suggests the important role of work events, mood, and micro-interventions in predicting on the job behavior and employee well-being. She has conducted field research in dozens of companies, including several Fortune 500 firms, with thousands of workers as participants. Her research uses a variety of methodologies including experience sampling, surveys, interviews, and physiological assessment.

Her work has been published in top management journals such as the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Applied Psychology and cited in media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and Huffington Post.

Host:
David Mayer, Associate Professor of Management & Organizations

Sponsors:

Entrepreneurship Speaker Series: Donna Harris (October 6, 2017 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/44894 44894-10003604@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 6, 2017 11:30am
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: Center for Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship Hour speaker series provides a venue for students to engage and network with world-class entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and business leaders from across the globe. This gateway class explores fundamental topics in entrepreneurship such as emerging business models, new venture creation, and technology commercialization while exposing both undergraduate (freshmen – seniors) and graduate students to the ecosystem in a variety of industries. Note: These talks are open to the community as space permits.

About Donna Harris:

Donna is cofounder of 1776, Strategic Advisor to the 1776 Board of Directors, and General Partner 1776 Ventures. Under her leadership 1776 has grown from a theory to a globally recognized brand at the center of worldwide startup activity. Launched in 2013, 1776 now has campuses in Washington, D.C.; Arlington, Virginia; San Francisco; New York City and Dubai, and it operates a venture fund making investments worldwide.

1776 has supported the founding of hundreds of young companies that are growing and creating jobs in the Washington, D.C., region. Thousands more around the globe enjoy backing and guidance from its network. With visitors ranging from President Obama and former British Prime Minister David Cameron, to CEOs of America’s top technology companies, 1776 has become the singular go-to stop in the region for political and corporate leaders seeking to engage the innovation economy.

Before launching 1776, Donna served the Startup America Partnership as managing director. Working in partnership with the White House, the Kauffman Foundation and the Case Foundation, she led the formation of entrepreneurial communities across the United States and integrated them into a national startup ecosystem. Her work was the precursor to the Startup Nations initiative, enabling informal knowledge-sharing among economies to help accelerate new and young firm formation in their countries in order to create jobs, build economies and expand human welfare. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Global Entrepreneurship Network, which oversees the program.

Prior to joining Startup America, Donna was Vice Chair of Interpoint Group, a government markets, government relations, public affairs strategy and management firm. Interpoint generated nearly $8 billion in revenue while passing or defeating legislation, and the group executed public affairs campaigns for corporations, non-profits, foundations and governments globally. Under her leadership, the company grew tenfold before its acquisition by Pegasus Capital Partners.

Previously she founded and served as CEO of Kinderstreet, which sold software in the education, sports and recreation markets. Donna grew the company from concept to a national leader in the field with more than 900 active schools using the product across 41 states. Arc Capital Development acquired Kinderstreet in 2005.

Earlier in her career, she served as vice president of Centromine, a provider of web-based clinical and fiscal systems in the health and human services industry. There, she led all product and market strategy and assisted in raising $11 million in venture capital financing. Echo Group acquired Centromine in 2000.

Donna serves as a trustee of the Federal City Council, a policy adviser to the Economic Innovation Group and a member of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. In addition to serving on the Global Entrepreneurship Network’s board of directors, she also sits on the National Center for Entrepreneurship’s board. She is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Georgetown University and is an active angel investor as a cofounder of K Street Capital.

Donna is a frequent speaker and contributor to publications like the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and Huffington Post. Recognized as one of Washington, D.C.’s Power 100 by Washington Business Journal and Washington Life, and as a Tech Titan by Washingtonian Magazine, she has become one of the most influential leaders in the region’s new economy.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and an M.B.A. with distinction from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. She has also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from American University and resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, son and two dogs.

This panel will bring together Barbour Scholars for a panel to reflect on Levi Barbour’s original motivation for creating his scholarship, and to seek to examine how the mission has been transformed over time and into the modern day. When Barbour first traveled throughout Asia, he met several women who had studied at the University of Michigan and then returned home to aid their countries’ development. Barbour wanted to provide the same opportunity for more women, who frequently faced obstacles to advancement in their home countries, to receive a western education. The Barbour Scholarship has survived through a highly dynamic century that has seen dramatic changes in the relationships between the United States and the home countries of many Barbour Scholars, the rise of globalism, and incredible innovations across many fields of study. Join us for a conversation amongst Barbour Scholars whose experiences span decades and fields of study. Please email rackham.alums@umich.edu with questions or for more information.

Barbour alumnae and current Scholars will participate in a panel to share their experiences traveling across the globe to earn a University of Michigan education. Participants will include Dr. Meera Sampath (Electrical Engineering), Dr. Heasook Rhee (Music Performance), and Dr. Wing Li (Mathematics). Current student participants will include Amrita Dhar (English Language and Literature) and Niloufar Emami (Architecture), both of whom are doctoral candidates These women will provide a small snapshot of the realization of Levi Barbour's vision of opportunity and a truly global experience.

The panel precedes a networking event for current Barbour Scholars and alumnae.

About Fredriksson's talk:
It has only been 40 years since all Cambodian schools were closed and many teachers were killed. The educational system, from kindergarten to university, still suffers from the Pol Pot regime.

The high cost affiliated with sending a child to school in Cambodia makes many poor families struggle to educate their children. The students who make it through high school and enroll at university also face a number of challenges. After spending years learning by memorizing they are suddenly expected to learn by exploring and independently searching for new knowledge. This leads to significant problems with plagiarism and poor performance as well as stress and lowered self-esteem amongst students.

To support learning and wellbeing, from kindergarten to university, we need resources as well as knowledge. Private donors, companies, researchers, and educators worldwide have an important role to play in Cambodia’s development. The challenge is to embrace a holistic perspective. The current challenges are looming so large that no isolated intervention would be able to solve them. Instead we need mindful engagement where every stakeholder gets the best possible information to make a useful contribution.

In the talk, Evelina will share her experience of creating a positive setting for learning and growth. She will talk about how the practice of mindful engagement and the strengths of gratitude, teamwork and creativity pave the way forward; regardless if the task at hand is making sure that a 7-year-old has enough nutrition to focus in class, preventing a 15-year-old from dropping out of school to work in a factory, or supporting a 21-year-old university student who didn’t sleep for days anxious about an approaching deadline.

About Fredriksson:
Evelina is an educator, consultant, journalist, and author. She works with People Improvement Organization Cambodia, serves on the board of the knowledge lab Inter Business Initiative, is the co-founder of the boutique consultancy Lumen Behavior, and teaches at Zaman University Cambodia and Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia.

Evelina has extensive experience with sustainability reporting and applied research. Her main area of expertise is children’s and women’s rights. She recently published a book based on interviews with girls and women in Phnom Penh and is currently conducting research about signature strengths amongst Cambodian students.

Over the years, Evelina has conducted research and has been writing about vulnerable children and women in, for example, Sweden, Cambodia, the Gambia, India, Senegal, Kazakhstan, and Zimbabwe. Evelina developed the grant making strategy for the family foundation Stenbeck Stiftelse that caters to children in need, as well as leading the Reach for Change Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which was one of the first GRI reports published globally for civil society organizations. Evelina was also responsible for the design, implementation, and PR for one of the most standard Save the Children assessment tools for young people in Sweden.

Gain inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in people. Learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About Quinn's talk:
Warren Bennis wrote that becoming a leader is becoming who you really are. Research shows, counter to conventional thought, that people of transformative power develop a characteristic called idealized influence. They become models worthy of admiration, respect, trust, and emulation. They live from a moral core that generates attractive power. Without authority, they can draw the best out of others. Conventional assumptions prevent us from seeing, understanding or aspiring to this condition.

This limitation constrains organizational efforts in leadership development. Organizations cannot do what they spend much money trying to do. They can develop managers but they cannot develop leaders. This means we have to own our own leadership development. This session will explore how to become who you really are and how to help those around you to do the same.

About Quinn:
Robert E. Quinn is the Margaret Elliot Tracy Professor Emeritus of Business Administration at the University of Michigan. Quinn is one of the co-founders of the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship, an area of inquiry that seeks to understand the best of the human condition. He had published eighteen books on purpose, leadership, and change. He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has received multiple awards for both teaching and research.

Host:
Gretchen Spreitzer, faculty director of the Center for Positive Organizations; Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration; Professor of Management and Organizations

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Diane (BA ’73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2017-18 Positive Links Speaker Series.

Note: These talks are open to the community as space permits.

About Richard Lui:

Nonpartisan Reporting Spanning 25 Years
Richard Lui's career in politics and political news spans 25 years, including news anchor for MSNBC, NBC News and CNN Worldwide. In 2007 he became the first Asian American male to anchor a daily national news broadcast in America. Most recently, Lui reported on the ground on the Paris and San Bernardino Terror Attacks and in Ferguson and Baltimore during heightened racial unrest. He's received Emmy and Peabody awards and the Champion in Media Award at the Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner Award at the National Press Club.

Launched 6 Tech Brands over 3 Business Cycles
Business Insider named Lui one of 21 careers to watch alongside Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg. Over the course of 30 years, Lui has launched six techbology brands over three business cycles, most recently with an artifiical intelligence company in Silicon Valley. After MBA at Michigan Ross School of Business, he joined Citibank where he co-created a fintech payment model he holds a patent for. He was a management consultant at Mercer for an IBM joint venture. Lui sits on four boards of directors / advisers in spaces ranging from international relations to artificial intelligence.

Top 1% WSB Speaker, over 500 Events
Lui is ranked in the top 1% of subject matter experts of Washington Speakers Bureau speakers. Lui was awarded Civil Rights awards, including the National Education Association's Human and Civil Rights Award, Asian American Jounalists Association's Civil Rights Award, and the Asian Americans Advancing Justice Courage Award. He is also ranked globally in the top 1% of social media users by Twitter Counter, and more lightheartedly, for four years ranked by Mediaite as one of the "50 Sexiest in TV News."

Political Practitioner
During the last 15 years Lui's reporting has focused on politics, covering every U.S. national election since 2004. He has interviewed hundreds of politicians, from Detroit Mayor to U.S. President. He has been a contributing columnist for USA Today, Politico, Seattle Times, Detroit Free Press, Huffington Post, and others. Lui is a Policy Fellow at UC Riverside.

Lui's passion for politics started in the 70s, when he debated California's controversial Proposition 13 on bus rides to school. His interest turned into a job at the age of 19: campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong. After the election, Lui returned to college. His plan was to write on policy and the affairs of state, subscribing to the Washington Post when it had to be mailed to the west coast.

In the 1990s, Lui reported for news radio KALX during a unique time in California politics. Two of his first stories as a journalist were Dianne Feinstein's first successful U.S. Senate campaign and the Rodney King verdict and riots.

Later in the 2000s, Lui reported from Asia during an increasingly heated political climate. Two Muslim countries in Southeast Asia transformed: Indonesia's Sukarno family was defeated after rule spanning over half a century; and Malaysia's prime minister, after almost a quarter of a century handed over power. Lui also reported on Taiwan's controversial election between pro- and anti- China political parties. He was at Channel NewsAsia, an English-only news network in 20 countries and territories.

He is a Policy Fellow at the University of California Riverside where he explores the cross of public policy and media, Global Ambassador for Plan International, one of 200 active US State Department Traveling Speakers, and spokesperson for NGOs focusing on gender equality and human trafficking including the UN's HeForShe campaign.

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
We live in a world of extraordinary pain and suffering. Public confidence in major corporations is at an all-time low. Why? Too many businesses exploit their people and harm their communities for short-term profit. If we are not consciously part of the healing, we are probably part of the hurting. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Business can become the primary agent for healing society. This is not about healing businesses; it is about business as healing. Business can take wounded people, broken communities, and damaged ecosystems and make them whole again – and businesses that operate in this way will be more successful and profitable over time. In this session, Sisodia will share stories of such businesses and extract lessons from them.

About Sisodia:
Raj Sisodia is the FW Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business and Whole Foods Market Research Scholar in Conscious Capitalism at Babson College. He is also Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Conscious Capitalism Inc.

He has a PhD in Marketing from Columbia University. Raj has published ten books and over 100 academic articles. His books include Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, Firms of Endearment: How World Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family, and Shakti Leadership: Embracing the Feminine and Masculine Future of Business. He is on the Board of Directors at The Container Store, and a trustee of Conscious Capitalism Inc.

Host:
Jane Dutton, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations; Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Business Administration and Psychology

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Cascade Engineering, Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2017-18 Positive Links Speaker Series.

Information-age Conflict (February 9, 2018 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49276 49276-11406204@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 9, 2018 10:30am
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Electrical and Computer Engineering

ABSTRACT: War is changing. It is being redefined by the connectivity and accessibility of today’s information age conveniences like smart phones and the internet. This has been enabled by rapid advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Arguably, ICT can fuel conflict, which can now play out in new virtual venues including the world of social media. The growing dependence of individuals and states on ICT exacerbates their vulnerabilities as does the interconnections and interdependence growing between nation-states. Traditionally, the definition of war between nation-states has been characterized by “armed conflict.” This is no longer the case. Information warfare (vs. traditional kinetic warfare) may be emerging as a more likely form. And, free and open societies appear to be at a disadvantage to some extent. In this talk, Dr. Porche will discuss how this new normal came about, including the technology and policies that have enabled it. The goal of this talk is to motivate the audience to think about how technology and technological progress can do the following: (i) mitigate the vulnerabilities that free and open societies have inherited and (ii) safeguard key values like privacy and free expression, which is what has helped foster the technological growth of the last few decades.

BIO: Dr. Porche is a senior engineer at the RAND Corporation, where he currently serves as the Director of the Acquisition and Development Program in the Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center (HSOAC). As a program director, he overseas a wide range of projects supporting the Department of Homeland Security and its components. Dr. Porche joined RAND in 1998 after graduating from the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He has led research projects for the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Joint Staff, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has served on the U.S. Army Science Board supporting a number of its cyber-related panels. He is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington University. At the Institute of Politics and Strategy at Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Porche serves as an adjunct instructor, where he teaches a graduate class titled “Policy and Technology of Cyberwar.” He has authored numerous RAND publications, peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. He is also a frequent contributor of op-eds and commentary for news outlets on military and science topics and has been quoted in other media outlets including National Public Radio, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Porche’s areas of expertise include cybersecurity, network and communication technology, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, data mining, modeling and simulation, cybersecurity, rapid acquisition processes, and operations research techniques. In 2016, he presented testimony on emerging cyber threats and implications before the House Homeland Security Committee, Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies. His latest RAND publication, Cyber Power Potential of the Army’s Reserve Component, focuses on how to train, manage, and develop the Army’s cyber force. He is the author of the forthcoming book Cyberwarfare 101: Technology, Tactics, and Techniques for Information-age Conflict (Artech House, 2019).

ABOUT THE EVENT: Dr. Porche is the inaugural speaker for the ECE Willie Hobbs Moore Alumni Lecture.

The ECE Willie Hobbs Moore Alumni Lecture is given by ECE alumni from traditionally underrepresented groups in Electrical and Computer Engineering who are leaders in their field and serve as role models for the ECE community through their leadership, impact on society, service to the community, or other contributions.

Willie Hobbs Moore (1934–1994) was the first African American woman at Michigan to earn a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering (‘58 and ‘61), and the first African American woman in the country to earn a PhD in physics in 1972. She joined Ford Motor Company in 1977, where she was known for expanding the use of Japanese engineering and manufacturing methods. She was named one of the 100 “most promising black women in corporate America” by Ebony magazine in 1991.

The number of peacekeeping forces deployed in recent years is at historic highs. The security of the men and women serving in these missions—and of the weapons, ammunition, and equipment in their possession—is frequently at risk. Peacekeepers have lost thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition. Moreover, much of this loss was likely preventable.

Eric Berman (B.A. 1986) is the director of Small Arms Survey, a global centre of excellence whose mandate is to generate evidence-based, impartial, and policy-relevant knowledge on all aspects of small arms and armed violence. Previously, he has worked at the United Nations, The UN Transitional Authority of Cambodia, the UN Office at Geneva, and the UN International Commission of Inquiry (Rwanda).

Join the political science grad on Friday, February 16 at 2 p.m. for an Alumni Connections session where he will talk about the Making Peace Operations More Effective (MPOME) project and how it will deepen the understanding of lost materials from peace operations and develop mechanisms to improve security and administrative oversight.

About the talk:
In this talk, Dutton and Worline invite you to consider the power of high quality connections in organizations as a source of competitive advantage. Research on the power of high quality connections (and the pathways to build them) offers insights into how we can infuse organizational practices (such as onboarding, meetings, talent development, and shift changes) with a greater capacity for building high quality connections. The presentation will offer practical examples of how to re-imagine everyday organizational routines as opportunities to build employee engagement, health, creativity, and resilience.

About Dutton:
Jane Dutton is the Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Emerita Professor of Business Administration and Psychology at the University of Michigan and co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations. Her research on Positive Organizational Scholarship began with an interest in compassion and the difference it makes for individuals and organizations, and has expanded to focus on the power of positive relationships at work, job crafting, and positive identities.

About Worline:
Monica C. Worline, PhD, is co-author of Awakening Compassion at Work and founder and CEO of EnlivenWork, an innovation organization that teaches people how to tap into courageous thinking, compassionate leadership, and the curiosity to bring their best work to life. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the University of Michigan African Studies Center (ASC). Since its founding in 2008, ASC has successfully deepened, and brought higher visibility to, longstanding U-M/Africa institutional partnerships, especially in Ghana and South Africa, and supported new collaborations with universities in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Liberia, and Uganda (to name a few).

Our major commemorative event will be a three-day symposium entitled, “ASC: The First Decade and Beyond.” The symposium will provide a glimpse into an environment rich in collaborations, research, and engagement in and about Africa, highlighting projects that have truly transformed our engagement with Africa over the last ten years, and setting a foundation as we envision our way forward.

Featured events include:
» Panels of faculty and African partners representing ASC’s initiatives—African Heritage and Humanities Initiative, African Social Research Initiative, STEM-Africa, Ethiopia-Michigan Collaborative Consortium, and the U-M African Presidential Scholars program;

» Poster presentations by current students;
» Roundtable featuring U-M alumni living and working in Africa

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
As the world gets smaller, people with different cultural backgrounds are colliding like never before. A root cause of many everyday tensions between genders, races, and social classes is the clash between the values and practices of independence and those of interdependence. Drawing from her book, Clash! How to Thrive in a Multicultural World, Markus will show how recognizing and including interdependence within workplace culture cycles can bridge divides and enhance individual motivation, creativity, and performance.

About Markus:
Hazel Rose Markus is Professor of Psychology and Davis-Brack Professor in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. She is also co-director of SPARQ: Social Psychological Answers to Real-world Questions. Her research focuses on how culture shapes mind and behavior. She examines how multiple forms of culture (e.g., national origin, ethnicity, race, social class, gender and occupation) influence the self, and in turn, psychological functioning, including cognition, emotion, motivation and intergroup processes.

Host:
Julia Lee, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations

Native American Studies at the University of Michigan presents the 2018 Robert F. Berkhofer Jr. Lecture: An Evening With Gerald Vizenor

BETRAYAL AND IRONY: Native American Survivance and the Subversion of Ethnology

Gerald Vizenor is Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a citizen of the White Earth Nation in Minnesota, and has published more than thirty books including novels, literary criticism, cultural studies, and poetry. Blue Ravens, an historical novel, and Treaty Shirts are his most recent publications. Vizenor has received many awards including the American Book Award for Griever: An American Monkey King in China, the Western Literature Association Distinguished Achievement Award, and the Lifetime Literary Achievement Award from the Native Writer’s Circle of the Americas. Prior to his long career as an intellectual and academic, he enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces, during which he was stationed in Japan; directed the American Indian Employment and Guidance Center in Minneapolis; and served as a journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune, where he reported critically about the activities of the American Indian Movement.

This event is free and open to the public. There will be a catered reception to follow the lecture. Literati bookstore will be selling Vizenor's books starting at 6PM and again after the lecture.

The Berkhofer Lecture series (named for a former U-M professor and founder of the field of Native American studies) was established in 2014 by an alumni gift from the Dan and Carmen Brenner family of Seattle, Washington. In close consultation with the Brenners, Native American Studies decided to create a public lecture series featuring prominent, marquee speakers who would draw audiences from different communities (faculty and students, Ann Arbor and Detroit, and Michigan tribal communities as well as writers and readers of all persuasions). Native American students at U-M have consistently expressed their desire to make Native Americans more visible both on campus and off, and we believe that this lecture takes a meaningful step in that direction. Additionally, because of the statewide publicity it generates, we think it is already becoming another recruitment incentive for Native American students. It goes without saying that the speakers we are inviting provide tremendous value to the mission and work of Native American Studies at U-M.

About the talk:
If you own a smartphone, you’re currently carrying as much computing power as early spaceships took to the moon. And new wearable devices promise to keep us constantly connected to the internet, anytime, anywhere. But are these amazing new technologies actually making us happier and more socially connected? In her session, Elizabeth Dunn will describe new findings from the UBC Happy Lab, showing that being constantly connected to the internet may carry hidden costs for individuals and organizations.

About Dunn:
Elizabeth Dunn is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia. This panel will discuss China and U.S. relations at the subnational level, focusing on the interactions and investments between Chinese entities and U.S. states and cities. Chinese foreign direct investment in the U.S. has grown steadily over the last two decades, and many U.S. states actively court Chinese investment to supplement local economic growth.

This panel will address these trends in the current political climate, featuring three experts on the subject. Mercy Kuo (Chinese Studies MA, '94) is the President of the Washington State China Relations Council. Brian Connors is the Executive Director of the Michigan-China Innovation Center. Damien Ma (Chinese Studies MA, '06 is a Fellow and Associate Director of the Think Tank at the Paulson Institute. The panel will be moderated by Professor Yuen Yuen Ang, Department of Political Science at U-M.

Michigan in Tokyo
