The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
We live in a world of extraordinary pain and suffering. Public confidence in major corporations is at an all-time low. Why? Too many businesses exploit their people and harm their communities for short-term profit. If we are not consciously part of the healing, we are probably part of the hurting. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Business can become the primary agent for healing society. This is not about healing businesses; it is about business as healing. Business can take wounded people, broken communities, and damaged ecosystems and make them whole again – and businesses that operate in this way will be more successful and profitable over time. In this session, Sisodia will share stories of such businesses and extract lessons from them.

About Sisodia:
Raj Sisodia is the FW Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business and Whole Foods Market Research Scholar in Conscious Capitalism at Babson College. He is also Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Conscious Capitalism Inc.

He has a PhD in Marketing from Columbia University. Raj has published ten books and over 100 academic articles. His books include Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, Firms of Endearment: How World Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family, and Shakti Leadership: Embracing the Feminine and Masculine Future of Business. He is on the Board of Directors at The Container Store, and a trustee of Conscious Capitalism Inc.

Host:
Jane Dutton, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations; Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Business Administration and Psychology

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Cascade Engineering, Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2017-18 Positive Links Speaker Series.

Information-age Conflict (February 9, 2018 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49276 49276-11406204@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 9, 2018 10:30am
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Electrical and Computer Engineering

ABSTRACT: War is changing. It is being redefined by the connectivity and accessibility of today’s information age conveniences like smart phones and the internet. This has been enabled by rapid advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Arguably, ICT can fuel conflict, which can now play out in new virtual venues including the world of social media. The growing dependence of individuals and states on ICT exacerbates their vulnerabilities as does the interconnections and interdependence growing between nation-states. Traditionally, the definition of war between nation-states has been characterized by “armed conflict.” This is no longer the case. Information warfare (vs. traditional kinetic warfare) may be emerging as a more likely form. And, free and open societies appear to be at a disadvantage to some extent. In this talk, Dr. Porche will discuss how this new normal came about, including the technology and policies that have enabled it. The goal of this talk is to motivate the audience to think about how technology and technological progress can do the following: (i) mitigate the vulnerabilities that free and open societies have inherited and (ii) safeguard key values like privacy and free expression, which is what has helped foster the technological growth of the last few decades.

BIO: Dr. Porche is a senior engineer at the RAND Corporation, where he currently serves as the Director of the Acquisition and Development Program in the Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center (HSOAC). As a program director, he overseas a wide range of projects supporting the Department of Homeland Security and its components. Dr. Porche joined RAND in 1998 after graduating from the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He has led research projects for the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Joint Staff, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has served on the U.S. Army Science Board supporting a number of its cyber-related panels. He is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington University. At the Institute of Politics and Strategy at Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Porche serves as an adjunct instructor, where he teaches a graduate class titled “Policy and Technology of Cyberwar.” He has authored numerous RAND publications, peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. He is also a frequent contributor of op-eds and commentary for news outlets on military and science topics and has been quoted in other media outlets including National Public Radio, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Porche’s areas of expertise include cybersecurity, network and communication technology, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, data mining, modeling and simulation, cybersecurity, rapid acquisition processes, and operations research techniques. In 2016, he presented testimony on emerging cyber threats and implications before the House Homeland Security Committee, Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies. His latest RAND publication, Cyber Power Potential of the Army’s Reserve Component, focuses on how to train, manage, and develop the Army’s cyber force. He is the author of the forthcoming book Cyberwarfare 101: Technology, Tactics, and Techniques for Information-age Conflict (Artech House, 2019).

ABOUT THE EVENT: Dr. Porche is the inaugural speaker for the ECE Willie Hobbs Moore Alumni Lecture.

The ECE Willie Hobbs Moore Alumni Lecture is given by ECE alumni from traditionally underrepresented groups in Electrical and Computer Engineering who are leaders in their field and serve as role models for the ECE community through their leadership, impact on society, service to the community, or other contributions.

Willie Hobbs Moore (1934–1994) was the first African American woman at Michigan to earn a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering (‘58 and ‘61), and the first African American woman in the country to earn a PhD in physics in 1972. She joined Ford Motor Company in 1977, where she was known for expanding the use of Japanese engineering and manufacturing methods. She was named one of the 100 “most promising black women in corporate America” by Ebony magazine in 1991.

The number of peacekeeping forces deployed in recent years is at historic highs. The security of the men and women serving in these missions—and of the weapons, ammunition, and equipment in their possession—is frequently at risk. Peacekeepers have lost thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition. Moreover, much of this loss was likely preventable.

Eric Berman (B.A. 1986) is the director of Small Arms Survey, a global centre of excellence whose mandate is to generate evidence-based, impartial, and policy-relevant knowledge on all aspects of small arms and armed violence. Previously, he has worked at the United Nations, The UN Transitional Authority of Cambodia, the UN Office at Geneva, and the UN International Commission of Inquiry (Rwanda).

Join the political science grad on Friday, February 16 at 2 p.m. for an Alumni Connections session where he will talk about the Making Peace Operations More Effective (MPOME) project and how it will deepen the understanding of lost materials from peace operations and develop mechanisms to improve security and administrative oversight.

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
In this talk, Dutton and Worline invite you to consider the power of high quality connections in organizations as a source of competitive advantage. Research on the power of high quality connections (and the pathways to build them) offers insights into how we can infuse organizational practices (such as onboarding, meetings, talent development, and shift changes) with a greater capacity for building high quality connections. The presentation will offer practical examples of how to re-imagine everyday organizational routines as opportunities to build employee engagement, health, creativity, and resilience.

About Dutton:
Jane Dutton is the Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Emerita Professor of Business Administration and Psychology at the University of Michigan and co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations. Her research on Positive Organizational Scholarship began with an interest in compassion and the difference it makes for individuals and organizations, and has expanded to focus on the power of positive relationships at work, job crafting, and positive identities.

About Worline:
Monica C. Worline, PhD, is co-author of Awakening Compassion at Work and founder and CEO of EnlivenWork, an innovation organization that teaches people how to tap into courageous thinking, compassionate leadership, and the curiosity to bring their best work to life. She is a research scientist at Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and an affiliate faculty at the Center for Positive Organizations, University of Michigan.

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
As the world gets smaller, people with different cultural backgrounds are colliding like never before. A root cause of many everyday tensions between genders, races, and social classes is the clash between the values and practices of independence and those of interdependence. Drawing from her book, Clash! How to Thrive in a Multicultural World, Markus will show how recognizing and including interdependence within workplace culture cycles can bridge divides and enhance individual motivation, creativity, and performance.

About Markus:
Hazel Rose Markus is Professor of Psychology and Davis-Brack Professor in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. She is also co-director of SPARQ: Social Psychological Answers to Real-world Questions. Her research focuses on how culture shapes mind and behavior. She examines how multiple forms of culture (e.g., national origin, ethnicity, race, social class, gender and occupation) influence the self, and in turn, psychological functioning, including cognition, emotion, motivation and intergroup processes.

Julia Lee, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations

Native American Studies at the University of Michigan presents the 2018 Robert F. Berkhofer Jr. Lecture: An Evening With Gerald Vizenor

BETRAYAL AND IRONY: Native American Survivance and the Subversion of Ethnology

Gerald Vizenor is Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a citizen of the White Earth Nation in Minnesota, and has published more than thirty books including novels, literary criticism, cultural studies, and poetry. Blue Ravens, an historical novel, and Treaty Shirts are his most recent publications. Vizenor has received many awards including the American Book Award for Griever: An American Monkey King in China, the Western Literature Association Distinguished Achievement Award, and the Lifetime Literary Achievement Award from the Native Writer’s Circle of the Americas. Prior to his long career as an intellectual and academic, he enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces, during which he was stationed in Japan; directed the American Indian Employment and Guidance Center in Minneapolis; and served as a journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune, where he reported critically about the activities of the American Indian Movement.

This event is free and open to the public. There will be a catered reception to follow the lecture. Literati bookstore will be selling Vizenor's books starting at 6PM and again after the lecture.

The Berkhofer Lecture series (named for a former U-M professor and founder of the field of Native American studies) was established in 2014 by an alumni gift from the Dan and Carmen Brenner family of Seattle, Washington. In close consultation with the Brenners, Native American Studies decided to create a public lecture series featuring prominent, marquee speakers who would draw audiences from different communities (faculty and students, Ann Arbor and Detroit, and Michigan tribal communities as well as writers and readers of all persuasions). Native American students at U-M have consistently expressed their desire to make Native Americans more visible both on campus and off, and we believe that this lecture takes a meaningful step in that direction. Additionally, because of the statewide publicity it generates, we think it is already becoming another recruitment incentive for Native American students. It goes without saying that the speakers we are inviting provide tremendous value to the mission and work of Native American Studies at U-M.

About the talk:
If you own a smartphone, you’re currently carrying as much computing power as early spaceships took to the moon. And new wearable devices promise to keep us constantly connected to the internet, anytime, anywhere. But are these amazing new technologies actually making us happier and more socially connected? In her session, Elizabeth Dunn will describe new findings from the UBC Happy Lab, showing that being constantly connected to the internet may carry hidden costs for individuals and organizations.

About Dunn:
Elizabeth Dunn is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia. Dunn conducts experimental research examining how time, money, and technology shape human happiness. She is the co-author of Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending (Simon & Schuster) with Michael Norton. Her work has appeared in top journals, with three papers published in Science, and she has given talks at PopTech! and TEDx.

She was selected as one of the “rising stars” in academia by the Chronicle of Higher Education in 2004 and was an honoree for the 2007 Mind Gym Academic Prize for pioneering work in positive psychology. In 2010, she received a New Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as UBC’s Robert E. Knox Master Teacher Award. Her research has been featured in hundreds of media outlets around the world, including The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, The London Times, Maclean’s, Time, and CNN. Dunn is also an avid surfer and skier.

Michigan in Tokyo

An incredible true tale of espionage and engineering set at the height of the Cold War—a mix between The Hunt for Red October and Argo—about how the CIA, the U.S. Navy, and America’s most eccentric mogul spent six years and nearly a billion dollars to steal the nuclear-armed Soviet submarine K-129 after it had sunk to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean; all while the Russians were watching.

The Taking of K-129 is a riveting, almost unbelievable true-life tale of military history, engineering genius, and high-stakes spy-craft set during the height of the Cold War, when nuclear annihilation was a constant fear, and the opportunity to gain even the slightest advantage over your enemy was worth massive risk.

Writer Josh Dean will visit the department for the new Community Project. He'll be joined by NAME alumni who worked on this unbelievable project, including Chuck Cannon, Charlie Canby and John Hollett.

When: October 11th 12-2 PM

Distinguished Alumna 2018: A Conversation with Helen Foster (October 12, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52662 52662-12925298@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 12, 2018 3:30pm
Location: 1100 North University Building
Organized By: Earth and Environmental Sciences

Prof. Rebecca (Becky) Lange will talk with Helen Foster, our 2018 Distinguished Alumna, about Helen’s remarkable geological career and life. Helen Foster obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1946. She developed her passion for mapping unknown geological terrains as a graduate student in Wyoming, and thoroughly enjoyed her time at Camp Davis the geological field station where the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences teaches a wide variety of field courses. After she received her Ph.D., she leapt at the opportunity to work for the U.S. Geological Survey in Japan, during the U.S. military occupation immediately following the Second World War. She spent nearly a decade working with and befriending several Japanese geologists while compiling geological maps of Japan and the Kurile Islands. On her return to the United States, she continued her work with the U.S. Geological Survey, and became deeply involved with creating the first geological maps of Alaska. She was a pioneer in so many ways, as an intrepid young woman in Japan, and then as one among the first geologists to map the Alaskan wilderness, which was without roads and so field work involved being dropped off by a float airplane on a lake and spending weeks mapping and camping before being picked up again or re-supplied. Helen loved it! Throughout her lengthy career she has supported the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences - as an inspiration to our faculty and students, as a member of the Department’s Alumni Advisory Board, and as a generous donor. We will present an interview with Helen Foster recorded earlier this year.

Not Separate from the Street: Nancy Blum and Public Art Installation (October 19, 2018 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54327 54327-13572279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 19, 2018 4:30pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

The Robertson Lecture is an endowed annual event of the LSA Residential College, and is a lasting gift of the first Dean of the RC, James Robertson. The lecturer is traditionally a notable alumna/us of the RC, someone impacting their chosen field(s) in ways congruent with the philosophy of the College. The 2018 Robertson Lecture will be delivered at the Keene Theater in East Quadrangle on October 19th by Nancy Blum, class of '85, a Brooklyn-based artist who is known for her public art commissions and works on paper. In addition to graduating from the RC with majors in Psychology and Women’s Studies, she received an MSW from the U-M School of Social work and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her current work is installed primarily out of the gallery, not separated from the street but integrated into it, with a particular interest in sites of transit in cities and within hospital settings. Her recent commissions include medicinal wildflower windows at the San Francisco General Hospital acute care unit; large, graceful birds in flights of migration/immigration integrated into three light-rail stations in Minneapolis/St. Paul; and over-sized yellow flower sculptures sprouting from a rainwater filtration green space at a bus loop outside Philadelphia.

In her Robertson lecture, Nancy will share anecdotes about these and other works, and take us behind the scenes of her in-progress installation at an MTA train station in NYC. She'll explore how her multiple interests take root in public art, and she'll give us a sense for how she forged her own path as an artist - a journey, she says, that began at the Residential College, notably thanks to mentoring from her ceramics professor, Susan Crowell.

Following the Lecture, please join us for a reception for the artist at the RC Art Gallery, located on the first floor of East Quadrangle. Refreshments will be served. An exhibit of Nancy's drawings will be on display at the same gallery through November 9th, (M-F 10am-5pm, free admission).

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Self-affirmations can be powerful tools to attenuate threats to the self that emerge from the stressors of organizational life. When people are given opportunities to affirm core values and relationships, they are more responsive to otherwise difficult information. Drawing on decades of experimental and field studies, Sherman will present research on how, when, and why self-affirmations can lead to more adaptive outcomes, and the implications for organizational outcomes.

About Sherman:
David Sherman is a professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a social and health psychologist whose research centers on how people cope with threatening events and information. He is Editor at the Personality and Social Psychology Review and is the president of the International Society for Self and Identity. Sherman’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Beginning in the adolescent and emerging adult years, many people create stories to make sense of their lives. Narrative identity is the internalized and evolving story of the self that explains how a person has come to be the unique person he or she is becoming.

In this talk, McAdams will describe recent psychological research on narrative identity, with an emphasis on stories of personal redemption (triumphing over adversity and suffering) and their strong connections to mental health, psychological well-being, and positive societal engagement.

In various forms such as narratives of upward mobility, atonement, recovery, and personal liberation, the redemptive life stories told by American men and women today, especially in their midlife years, reprise important cultural ideals that have traditionally been associated with living a good life in America.

About McAdams:
Dan P. McAdams is the Henry Wade Rogers Professor of Psychology and Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. Author of nearly 300 scientific articles and chapters, numerous edited volumes, and seven books, McAdams works in the areas of personality and life-span developmental psychology. His theoretical and empirical writings focus on concepts of self and identity in contemporary American society and on themes of power, intimacy, redemption, and generativity across the adult life course.

McAdams is the author most recently of The Art and Science of Personality Development and The Redemptive Self: Stories Americans Live By. He also wrote a psychological biography entitled George W. Bush and the Redemptive Dream: A Psychological Portrait. In 2016, The Atlantic commissioned him to write an extended psychological essay on the life and mind of Donald J. Trump, which appeared as the cover article for the June 2016 issue of that magazine.

Join us as we celebrate our 200th Adderley Positive Research Incubator presentation!

Research is the heart of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS), and we want to make sure that we support each other in developing high quality research. To that end, we created the Adderley Positive Research Incubator for sharing and encouraging POS-related research ideas that are at various stages of development.

Since our first gathering in 2004, the Adderley Positive Research Incubator has enabled 120+ researchers in the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship to share research ideas while still in development. This safe space encourages the development of high-quality research and allows for positive, constructive feedback on projects still in progress.

About the talk
This presentation will provide an overview of survey data and intervention research by the Healthy Minds Network, a large-scale research initiative to improve understanding of mental health and help-seeking in adolescent and young adult populations, particularly college students.
