FAST Lecture | Engraving One’s Name in the Wadi Hammamat Quarries: From Spatial Dynamics to Visual Discourses (March 18, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82959 82959-21227230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 18, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Located halfway between the Nile and the Red Sea, Wadi Hammamat is the modern name given to a section of this ancient Eastern Desert road where greywacke and siltstone quarries were exploited from the Predynastic period onward. In addition to a current project which aims to (re)edit the rich epigraphic material uncovered in situ, approximately 400 pre-Late Period inscriptions, this corpus has recently been re-explored in terms of writing practices. Through a multidimensional perspective, Vincent Morel will give some new insights into what these engravings “tell” beyond the strictly linguistic level. Focusing on the Old Kingdom material (3rd millennium BCE), he will make use of an original heuristic approach, associating material, visual, and (inter[icono])textual investigations, to better understand the intelligibility of the writing act itself, in a liminal place where the mere mortal could partake in the divine.

Please note, this lecture takes place at 12 p.m. Eastern.

“Be of Good Cheer”: The Colorful Grave Markers of Ancient Terenouthis (April 2, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81824 81824-20961285@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 2, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

In 1935, U-M excavators recovered hundreds of grave markers—also known as funerary stelae—from a cemetery outside the ancient town of Terenouthis, Egypt. The stelae are carved with images of ordinary Roman-Egyptians and many are also inscribed with their names, ages, death dates, and messages of comfort and cheer to mourners. Maybe more surprising to modern museum-goers is that the grave markers were also brightly painted with a life-like palette of colors.

In this talk, conservators at the Kelsey Museum will describe their work to preserve and study the stelae, including the scientific techniques they’re using to study paint colors and some of the surprising discoveries their work has revealed.

Kelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators, staff members, researchers, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.

Saturday Sampler tours are back! We've missed you and are thrilled to be offering our Saturday Sampler tours virtually. Join us over Zoom to explore the Kelsey Museum from the comfort of your home.

The theme of this week's tour is "Egyptian Burial Practices and the Afterlife."
The ancient Egyptians believed in a happy and eternal afterlife, and their burial practices reflected this. Mummification preserved the bodies of the deceased so they could enjoy the food and grave goods buried with them. Decorations on tomb walls depicted banquets, harvests, and other lovely scenes of what might lie ahead. This Zoom tour will examine some aspects of ancient Egyptian burial practices using artifacts from the Kelsey's collection as well as images of artifacts in several other museums.

In science and archaeology, we make assumptions to help us begin to interpret the scattered evidence of the past. But re-examining these assumptions can often reveal something new. In this talk, Richard Redding discusses how, in re-examining his own assumptions, he uncovered new insights into the diet of laborers at Giza in ancient Egypt.

Petitioning one's government is nothing new. In a papyrus from 210/11 CE Roman Egypt, a group of landowners and renters petitioned their government to help with a local water management issue. The papyrus clearly illustrates the deep entanglement between state power and local society in the management of the Fayum's rural countryside and shines a light on the mechanism(s) by which country farmers could motivate the state to intervene in local affairs. Join Prof. Brendan Haug as he explores these issues and the power of the ancient people.

The Kelsey Museum's Virtual Saturday Sampler tours are a great way to explore the ancient world from the comfort of your home.

Jewelry was important to the ancient Egyptians. In addition to being beautiful, jewelry could convey status to the wearer, and sometimes provide protection, both during life and the afterlife. In this tour, we look at Egyptian jewelry in the Kelsey Museum, including pieces worn by ancient Egyptians, pieces designed only for the afterlife, and jewelry on images of gods and goddesses.
