As museum professionals respond to the growing demand for collaboration with Native American communities, the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways project departs from typical collaborative efforts. While museum collaborations have overwhelmingly centered on museum exhibitions, Heritage Seeds focuses on research collections. Here, the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA) plant collections are the focal point of developing conversations. This presentation will explore my experience with the Heritage Seeds Project through my practicum at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. In particular, I will focus on the ways this project has begun to incorporate a broad range of individuals from a variety of university settings, museum backgrounds, and Tribal communities.

In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled "Cosmogonic Tattoos," his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides, imaginatively transformed within our campus context, this project celebrates the power of architecture, ornament, and material objects to shape knowledge, historical memory, and cultural identity.

Portrait sculpture not only illustrated the artistic conventions of cultures throughout the ancient Mediterranean but also sent messages of the social, political, and religious roles of the people being portrayed. We will compare and contrast characteristics of Egyptian, Greek and Roman, and Near Eastern cultures in our collection of portrait busts and relief carvings.

This paper reports results of my fieldwork of several mound tombs in the old province of Hitachi in eastern Japan, 50 miles northeast of Tokyo. The mound tombs are dated to the fifth, sixth and early seventh centuries, A.D. or the Middle and Late Kofun Period. The Kofun Period is characterized by the sharing of standardized keyhole-shaped form for elite mound tombs, which is distinguished from the preceding Yayoi Period when mortuary customs were regionally distinctive. Japanese archaeologists, especially those trained at the Kyoto University, have previously argued that the sharing of the mound form was a reflection of the strong, centralized state. In other words, the highest-ranking chief in the central polity distributed mound-construction plan to local elites as a symbol of control over local regions. However, the results of my fieldwork since 1999 indicate that several aspects of elite mortuary customs in eastern Japan are regionally distinctive. This suggests to me that local elites in eastern Japan, while influenced by the central polity to some extent, had considerable degree of freedom to maintain and practice their own customs.

Bioarchaeology of Adaptation to Climate Change in Ancient Northwest China (November 16, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46756 46756-10622859@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 16, 2017 12:00pm

Large-scale climate change in the second millennium BCE caused drought and social upheaval
around the world. In Northern Eurasia, it corresponded with the start of the Bronze Age and the
rise of pastoral nomadic societies. Elizabeth Berger has examined hundreds of skeletons from
Northwest China for evidence of dietary change, epidemiological transition, physiological stress,
migration, and other evidence of change in the human-environment system. In this talk, she will
outline her ecological approach and the results of the bioarchaeological investigation. Her
ongoing research has revealed broad continuity in way of life and even improvements in health
during the Chinese Bronze Age, evidence of resilience in ancient times.

Join Dr. Emily Mueller Epstein as she explores the results of her dissertation research within the context of pre-contact houses and households in the American Northwest. Archaeological excavation at four sites on Tse’tse’ede, “The Cold One” (Steens Mountain, Oregon) produced evidence for a subsistence and settlement system that likely supported a population of 100 or more. Material culture recovered in association with one house, various domestic surfaces, and from a high-elevation hunting locale revealed human use of the mountain spanning thousands of years (roughly 10,000 to 3,000 years ago). The excavated house joins the record of diverse Northern Great Basin house structures. Spatial analysis of recovered artifacts revealed specific activity areas at the site, and exotic artifacts suggest that households were connected to larger regional, social, and economic networks reaching into northern California and southwest Oregon.

There is ample evidence of past Native American communities significantly altering their landscape by building mounds, creating agricultural fields, and building substantial walls. One such site is Aztalan, in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Aztalan, attributed archaeologically to the Mississippian culture, is located between the current Wisconsin cities of Madison and Milwaukee, and was occupied from about AD 1000-1400. Over a series of years, Goldstein has conducted research at and round the site, most recently documenting how the people at Aztalan went beyond building mounds - they actively sculpted the landscape and built mounds with reflective surfaces used for effective performances.

This study compares skeletons from two cemeteries from the Warring States period (475-221 BCE) in Shaanxi, China. The cemeteries were used by two ethnic groups attested in the Chinese historical and archaeological records: the Huaxia, or Chinese; and the Rong, an agropastoralist group that migrated from Western China, and which had a long and complicated history of contact and conflict with the Huaxia. At the current study sites, mortuary and biodistance analyses confirm the cultural and biological distinctiveness of the two groups. However, skeletal measures of health and diet show an increase in similarity over time, which supports historical accounts that the Rong eventually adopted sedentary agriculture and assimilated into the Huaxia ethnicity.

Geoarchaeology is a part of archaeological research that is characterized by a markedly multiscalar approach. The acquisition of data ranges in fact from the observation of single mineral grains under a scanning electron microscope to the use of geological maps representing vast areas. Geoarchaeology is therefore carried out moving along a continuum of interconnected scales of observation. A series of practical examples will be employed to demonstrate the possibilities of this multiscalar approach.
