Xu Tiantian is the founding principal of DnA _Design and Architecture. She has received numerous awards such as the WA China Architecture Award in 2006 and 2008, the Architectural League New York’s Young Architects Award in 2008, the Design Vanguard Award in 2009 by Architecture Record and the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architect in 2019. She has built a number of projects, such as Songzhuang Art Center and Ordos Art Museum. In the past years she has been engaged extensively in the rural revitalising process in Songyang County, China. Her groundbreaking “architectural acupuncture” is a holistic approach to the social and economic revitalization of rural China and has been selected by UN Habitat as the case study of Inspiring Practice on Urban-Rural Linkages. Xu Tiantian received her masters in architecture and urban design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and her baccalaureate in architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

DnA_Design and Architecture is an interdisciplinary practice addressing our contemporary living environment, both physical and social, from scales small to large. Our approach to projects starts with research and discussion on context, program, and their interaction, which we believe are the fundamental elements, or the dna, that will define design and architecture, to adapt, engage, and contribute to our society of multiplicity and complexity. Context, program, and their potential relationship, will cultivate architecture into a multidimensional expression and generate new experiment and exploration for users. Architecture will continue to influence and inspire our contemporary life.

Join us for a faculty panel featuring Curriculum/Collection instructors Matias del Campo (Architecture 509 Space, Time, and Artificial Intelligence), Ivo Dinov (Health Sciences 650 Data Science and Predictive Analytics), and Maegan Fairchild (Philosophy 298 Metaphysics: Art and Ontology) as we discuss issues of art, authorship, and creation, as machine learning, or “artificial intelligence,” processes are increasingly applied to the art world. If an algorithm produces a composite portrait based on the work of thousands of artists, who is the “artist”? And how is this challenging our traditional understandings of creation? We’ll talk about these questions and more, with time for Q&A. The panel will be moderated by Kathleen Creel (Stanford, philosopher of machine learning).

This event is in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition Curriculum/Collection, now available to experience online.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund, and P.J. and Julie Solit.

The Premodern Colloquium. Gothic Art, Realism and Genre: Thoughts on Eric Auerbach (March 28, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81841 81841-20980958@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 28, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS)

This Zoom session of the Premodern Colloquium will run at 2:00PM to accommodate time differences.

This paper poses questions about the hierarchies and genres implicit or explicit in present day writing about Gothic art and architecture. A useful starting point is Eric Auerbach's work on mimesis and realism. Auerbach's brilliant literary insights into sermo humilis and the Judeo-Christian rejection of the ancient orders and hierarchies of rhetoric raise important objections. The first is that complex works of literature and art can seldom be pinned down just to one rhetorical mode or level of style. Rhetoric was not a single philosophy or body of knowledge to be adopted or repudiated, but a set of practices that varied ad usum, according to need and occasion.

Here I propose that the medieval Christian dispensation adhered to all the genera dicendi and rhetorical modes, and this opinion is tested with particular regard to epideictic or 'display' rhetoric and its relationship to 'realism'. It was Roland Barthes who noted that the 'reality effect' stemmed in part from epideisis or 'beautiful description'. This seems to offer an alternative route to realism (in so far as we can think causally about this matter) to the frank low speech often identified as sermo humilis. Praise and great speech are also discussed here with a view to understanding the ways that, morally and metaphysically, the canonical monuments of realism in Gothic Europe aimed not to diminish their subjects through naked displays of power, but to involve them in a rhetorical discourse of magnification whose aims were fundamentally political and social.

Finally, how can we recapture the great speech of medieval art without taking recourse to post-medieval notions of the Sublime? And to what extent can such great speech be theorized historically?

Many of us are thinking about how the pandemic will impact our lives going forward. This includes architects and designers who are imagining the changes that the pandemic will bring to urban spaces, neighborhoods, and homes.

Presenter Kit Krankel McCullough, an architectural and urban designer and faculty member for UM Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, will discuss some of the ways our surroundings are adapting to post-pandemic life and provide us with an inside look at what might be in our not- so-distant future.

Through her urban design practice and teaching, Ms. McCullough advocates for equitable and socially just development, healthy and sustainable environments, strong communities, and cities that promote well- being and happiness. At UM, she teaches design studios on housing and neighborhood development, seminars on transportation and urban economics, and a popular lecture course on real estate development for architects and planners. She has developed urban design and economic strategies at a range of scales and led urban design projects in cities around the country. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University.

Repatriation, provenance, and collaboration with community partners are among the pressing issues facing museums with collections of African objects. These conversations have entered public discourse through discussions of the objects looted from Benin City in 1897. Yet, questions of African collections extend beyond the Benin case. Each collection has its own specific histories and presents unique challenges for museum professionals.

Join this program organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA that features curators from the Fowler, New Orleans Museum of Art, and University of Michigan Museum of Art for presentations and a panel discussion about current approaches and examples of work happening in museums today. The program will be moderated by Sylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie.

This program is generously supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Laura De Becker is the Interim Chief Curator and the Helmut and Candis Stern Curator of African Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). A specialist in Central African art, she joined UMMA after a fellowship at Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa. De Becker has been working for many years with a team to reinstall UMMA’s permanent African collection, which will double the footprint of the African gallery and has prompted a separate project grappling with issues of restitution entitled, Wish You Were Here.

Ndubuisi C. Ezeluomba is the Francois Billion Richardson curator of African art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He received his doctorate in Art History from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and specializes in the visual cultures of shrines, having contributed articles and book chapters on the topic to various publications. He also writes on the museum and the politics of acquisition.

Carlee S. Forbes is the Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Fowler Museum, where she researches the African objects donated by the Wellcome Trust in 1965. Forbes received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked with the Ackland Art Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. Her research focuses on art produced during the colonial period in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, museum and collecting histories, and issues of provenance.

Erica P. Jones is Curator of African Arts at the Fowler Museum. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from UCLA. Since joining the Fowler Museum in 2015, Jones has organized several exhibitions. In 2018, she curated a solo exhibition of Botswana-born painter Meleko Mokgosi, Bread, Butter, and Power, and authored the accompanying publication. Her 2019 exhibition, On Display in the Walled City: Nigeria at the British Empire Exhibition, 1924–1925, directly relates to the research conducted by the Fowler’s Mellon team.

Sylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie is Professor of African and African Diaspora Arts in the Department of History of Art and Architecture, University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on modern and contemporary African art, cultural informatics, and the arts and cultural patrimony of Africa and the African diaspora in the age of globalization. He is the author of Ben Enwonwu: The Making of An African Modernist (2008), Making History: African Collectors and the Canon of African Art (2011), and founder-editor of Critical Interventions: Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture.

Buying Home, Selling America: the House Catalog, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes, such as, the Michigan house catalog industry, changing architectural styles, the business of selling homes, societal and cultural implications, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.

The exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Material Responsibility discusses issues of contemporary material fabrication in context to social, environmental, and construction related challenges. Researchers, designers, and builders assume the mantle of responsibility to address inherited legacies in everyday practices. This event tries to unravel not only assumptions about what and how we build, but also looks to question why, to situate our motivations and impact. In moving away from practices that simply justifies the present moment, the discussion on Material Responsibility aims to identify where our responsibilities lie in the complex global systems and networks that make up our contemporary practice.

Presentations from Mollie Claypool (The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL), Dana Cupkova (Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture), and Achim Menges (University of Stuttgart Institute for Computational Design and Construction), will be followed by a panel discussion with Taubman College faculty.

The exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

postcommodities... architecture after stuff (October 8, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86945 86945-21637612@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 8, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

We have made too much stuff. The current production model of more, faster, cheaper - which makes what is culture today, product tomorrow, trash the next - has created a counterproductive muchness of simultaneous material excess and environmental precarity. This persistent materialism is contributing to social inequity and climate crisis alike and from material extraction to Pinterest boards to distribution centers, architecture is implicated at all scales of this material saturation.

Beginning from this moment of material reckoning, postcommodities… architecture after stuff argues that our resources should no longer come from the ground, but from the muchness we have already produced. The symposium foregrounds designers and thinkers who are proposing other-again-new modes of operating within this moment, those that present tactics, material ingenuities, and tools needed for a more future-minded and non-extractive material culture.

postcommodities… architecture after stuff explores the possibilities of architecture’s participation in a new socio-material ecology by focusing on reversible design, circular materials, commodity exchange networks, protocols of maintenance and commercial antagonisms, to set the questions:

Is there material after materialism?

What can architecture do with all this stuff?

his mixed-modality 2-day symposium will presented both in-person in Ann Arbor, MI and streamed virtually.

Location: Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Join us for the public opening of the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS) at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Brief remarks by Dean Jonathan Massey and project lead Arash Adel will be followed by a ribbon cutting to open this state-of-the-art timber structure.

RFS is a robotically fabricated timber pavilion that explores new responsible and precise ways of creating our built environment. Contributing to outlooks for sustainable and low-carbon construction, RFS was built and sited on the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor through robot and human collaboration using standard off-the-shelf lumber that was regionally sourced. The structure was designed and fabricated by ADR Laboratory (Taubman College Assistant Professor Arash Adel), research assistants, and Taubman College students, employing Taubman College's state-of-the-art robotic fabrication facilities. This outdoor structure offers new public gathering points while maintaining an open-air condition marked by pandemic times.

Completing RFS elevated the ongoing research in robotic timber construction to the scale and complexities of full and complete building systems beyond the laboratory. The faculty leadership is fully invested in advancing the larger questions of how and why we make, and this project explores and tests new ways of building the future. Join us to learn more and to be among the first to visit the pavilion.

Lecture: LA Más (October 25, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88235 88235-21651564@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 25, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

LA Más co-founder Elizabeth Timme and Backyard Homes program manager Chaz Kern will share more on the firm's work.

LA Más designs and builds initiatives that promote neighborhood resilience and elevate the agency of working class communities of color. They envision a Northeast Los Angeles where communities of color have equitable access to the power and resources needed to shape their futures.

Across Los Angeles’ diverse neighborhoods, LA Más has collaborated with residents, community organizations, and local government agencies to execute thoughtful, playful, and contextually designed projects. Serving as an intermediary between community members and policymakers, LA Más’ projects have focused on elevating what already works – demonstrating that smaller, community-scale urban developments can preserve a neighborhood’s local identity. This has included working in the public realm to create safe pedestrian experiences, empowering small business owners through design, and building alternative affordable housing.

This event will be presented virtually. Following the lecture, LA Más will be joined by Taubman College faculty Sharon Haar and Ellie Abrons for a conversation around affordable housing.

In Search of China's Soul ~ WebinART | Architecture with Chinese Characteristics: How the Past is Driving New Ideas for China's Future Cities (October 27, 2021 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86987 86987-21637990@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 27, 2021 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

Join top architects and urban thinkers for a wide-ranging discussion on China’s cities of the future. For decades, China’s planners focused on tearing down the old, and building the new in order to fuel the nation’s rapid development. Glistening cities rose, while psychological and social costs took a back seat. Today, as China struts more confidently on the world stage, its architects are reaching back to Chinese tradition to reinvent urban planning—and redefine what it means to be modern. Speakers include LRCCS Associate Director Lan Deng, Professor of Urban Planning, Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; Shuishan Yu, Associate Professor of Architecture and Affiliate Associate Professor of Music at Northeastern University; Wang Hui, Principal Architect and Co-founder of URBANUS Architecture & Design Inc.; and Xu Lei, Chief Architect and Director of the Yihe Architectural Design and Research Center of the China Architecture Design and Research Institute.

How close and how much? Linking health outcomes to spatial distributions of built environment features (November 3, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88562 88562-21655085@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 3, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease Center

Veronica Berrocal, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, University of California at Irvine.

Built environment features (BEFs) refer to aspects of the human constructed environment, which may in turn support or restrict health related behaviors and thus impact health. In this talk we are interested in understanding whether the spatial distribution and quantity of fast food restaurants (FFRs) influence the risk of obesity in schoolchildren. Our analysis on the influence of patterns of FFR occurrence on obesity among Californian schoolchildren has indicated that, in 2010, among schools that are consistently assigned to a cluster, there is a lower odds of obesity amongst 9th graders who attend schools with most distant FFR occurrences in a 1-mile radius as compared to others.

The goal of Environmental Statistics Week is to disseminate knowledge of advanced statistical methods most relevant to environmental health research with expert-led discussions on statistical concepts.

The debate about restitution and the ethics of Western museums’ owning African artworks collected during the era of colonization has never been more in the public eye. Most well-known, perhaps, are the “Benin bronzes,” artistic and royal heirlooms made since the 13th century by highly specialized metalworkers in the Kingdom of Benin (now southern Nigeria). In 1897, British forces sacked the capital of this prosperous kingdom. They tore sculptures and plaques from the palace walls, and took them back to Europe, where the looted treasures were sold to museums and private collectors. The royal court of Benin, Nigerian officials, and high-profile scholars such as Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu (Princeton) have been demanding their return for decades. Over the last decade, some museums based in the Global North have been listening to these calls for repatriation, and some have pledged to return works from their collections. To provide a new home for the repatriated works, plans for a new Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA), are currently in development with world renowned architect Sir David Adjaye leading the building design project.

On the occasion of Wish You Were Here: African Art & Restitution, a public investigation into our own collection at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), Sir David Adjaye and Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu will discuss their current and recent projects that address   how works of art may re-enter the societies they were torn away from. Laura De Becker, Interim Chief Curator and the Helmut and Candis Stern Curator of African Art at UMMA, will introduce the event.   Sir David Adjaye OBE is an award winning Ghanaian-British architect known to infuse his artistic sensibilities and ethos for community-driven projects. His ingenious use of materials, bespoke designs and visionary sensibilities have set him apart as one of the leading architects of his generation. In 2000, David founded his own practice, Adjaye Associates, which today operates globally, with studios in Accra, London, and New York taking on projects that span the globe. The firm’s work ranges from private houses, bespoke furniture collections, product design, exhibitions, and temporary pavilions to major arts centers, civic buildings, and master plans. His largest project to date, The National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, DC opened on the National Mall in Washington DC in 2016 and was named Cultural Event of the Year by The New York Times.

In 2017, Adjaye was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and was recognized as one of the 100 most influential people of the year by TIME Magazine. Most recently, Adjaye was announced the winner of the 2021 RIBA Royal Gold Medal. Approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Gold Medal is considered one of the highest honors in British architecture for significant contribution to the field internationally. Sir Adjaye is also the recipient of the World Economic Forum’s 27th Annual Crystal Award, which recognizes his “leadership in serving communities, cities and the environment.”

Chika Okeke-Agulu, an artist, critic and art historian, is director of the Program in African Studies and professor of African and African Diaspora art in the Department of African American Studies, and Department of Art & Archaeology, Princeton University. His books include Yusuf Grillo: Painting. Lagos. Life (Skira, 2020); Obiora Udechukwu: Line, Image, Text (Skira, 2016); Postcolonial Modernism: Art and Decolonization in Twentieth-Century Nigeria (2015); and (with Okwui Enwezor), Contemporary African Art Since 1980 (2010). He recently co-organized, with Okwui Enwezor, El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale (Haus der Kunst, Munich, 2019). He is co-editor of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, has written for The New York Times and Huffington Post, and maintains the blog Ọfọdunka.

His many awards include The Melville J. Herskovits Prize for the most important scholarly work in African Studies published in English during the preceding year (African Studies Association, 2016); and Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Art Criticism (College Art Association, 2016).Okeke-Agulu serves on the advisory boards of the Hyundai Tate Research Centre, Tate Modern, London, The Africa Institute, Sharjah, and Bët-bi/Le Korsa Museum Project, Senegal. He is also on the advisory council of Mpala Research Center, Nanyuki, Kenya; serves on the executive board of Princeton in Africa, and on the editorial boards of African Studies Review and Journal of Visual Culture.

After many years of working with a team to research to envision a new installation of UMMA’s African art collection, De Becker’s , a project that doubled the footprint of the African galleries at UMMA, opened in September 2021. De Becker’s work on the reinstallation led to , a separate project grappling with issues of restitution, also on view at UMMA for the 2021-22 academic year.

Wendy Carty-Saxon, Director of Real Estate Development at Avalon Housing, and Matt Grocoff, Principal at THRIVE Collaborative will engage in a moderated discussion about Veridian at County Farm, a new paradigm for community building and design. Join us for an honest discussion about the importance of collaboration in order to meet the unique challenges related to affordable and sustainable development.

About Wendy:

Wendy is Avalon's Director of Real Estate Development. She has been with Avalon since 1998, starting as Asset Manager, and has been responsible for Avalon's real estate development activities since 2005. Wendy has closed on numerous new acquisition projects, resulting in 209 affordable and supportive housing units, and preserved many others through rehab and refinance. Wendy has secured development financing from private and public sources including low-income housing tax credits, HUD HOME, CDBG and Neighborhood Stabilization Program, MSHDA, and private financing. She also has worked closely on many projects with local funders including the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development, the City of Ann Arbor, and the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. He was an adviser to the University of Michigan College of Engineering, BLUElab. His 1901-built Ann Arbor home was the world’s first home in a cold climate to achieve Net Zero Energy Certification. Matt is an internationally sought-after keynote speaker, a frequent source for journalists, and a leading advocate on the topic of regenerative systems design and systemic solutions for tackling climate crisis.
