Along with the Prophet’s relics, verbal icons of Muhammad known as hilyes count among the most popular forms of devotional art during the late Ottoman period. While manuscript paintings and compositions mounted on wooden boards have been the subject of scholarly inquiry, an otherwise unknown type of hilye production involves the insertion of verbal icons into glass bottles. Today, three such “hilye bottles” are held in the Topkapı Palace Library in Istanbul, where they remain unstudied and unpublished. This talk aims to present these newly uncovered artworks and explore their possible meanings and functions, among them their acting as a new kind of prophetic pharmacon during the late nineteenth century, at which time Muhammad was concretized and ‘imbibed’ as the ultimate elixir vitae.

Going Viral: Epidemics and Media in the Age of Print (June 30, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74917 74917-19073311@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 30, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies

The turn of the sixteenth century was a time when the rapid expansion of print media forged communities of readers eager to learn about the epidemics of the day, such as the plague, syphilis, and the English Sweating Sickness. Not unlike today, anxieties about the rapid spread of diseases coincided with anxieties about the rapid spread of harmful information.

Christopher Hutchinson (University of Mississippi) and Helmut Puff (University of Michigan) will engage in a one hour conversation about the nexus of epidemics and media (c. 1500).

Still-life paintings of food look innocent at first sight, but were depictions of food merely delicious and pretty pictures to admire? Shana Klein's new book, "The Fruits of Empire," argues otherwise. This book talk will address Klein's research on representations of food to understand how they reflected and shaped conversations about race and national expansion in the United States. She will discuss the paintings, photographs, and silverware objects in the book and ask: Who do images of food serve? And at whose expense? The results are not always delicious.

Dr. Klein, Assistant Professor of Art History at Kent State University, is trained in the history of American art, with sub-specialties in African-American and Native-American art.

This episode was generously sponsored by Duane and Marilyn Kirking.
