Dr. David Karowe will give this all-camp lecture in May and in June.

Dr. Karowe is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University and a long time General Ecology instructor at UMBS. Karowe and his students investigate the potential ecological consequences of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide. They focus on the ways nutritional quality and defensive chemistry of plants change under elevated CO2, and how such changes affect the growth, survivorship and behavior of insect herbivores and parasitoids. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 to include higher trophic levels. This work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Karowe will focus his all-camp lectures, offered on both May 30th and June 28th, on the urgent climate change challenges facing the Great Lakes Region, and will offer an overview of related research at the Biological Station. He will provide a framework by which students, researchers, and the public can better understand UMBS's important role in addressing these challenges and protecting our precious natural resources.

Dr. Decker recently finished her PhD at the University of Michigan with advisor Dr. Mark Hunter where she studied the chemical ecology of the monarch butterfly in the context of environmental change. Broadly, Dr. Decker is interested in the influence of plant chemistry on multitrophic interactions under future environmental conditions.

Dr. Decker received a B.A. from Cornell University where she completed a thesis project with Dr. André Kessler investigating the effects of herbivore-mediated changes in plant drought stress responses. This coming Fall, she will start a postdoc with Dr. Tadashi Fukami examining the effects of environmental change on nectar microbial communities and consequent pollinator visitation.

Dr. Meghan Duffy, Associate Professor and researcher at the University of Michigan, will give the Pettingill Endowed Lecture in Natural History at the U-M Biological Station, open to students, faculty, researchers, and the public.

Dr. Duffy's research focuses on the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions, with a particular focus on freshwater systems. She is especially interested in the intersection of ecology and evolutionary biology, including how rapid evolution affects host-parasite interactions, and how ecological context influences host-parasite evolution. Her research uses a combination of observational studies of natural populations and communities, manipulative experiments in the lab and field, and mathematical models. Most of her research focuses on the ecologically important freshwater crustacean Daphnia as host; Daphnia have long been a model system in ecology and evolutionary biology, and are emerging as a model organism for studies of host-parasite interactions.

Dr. Duffy received her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University in 2000. After a brief stint working as a field technician in Antarctica, she moved to the Kellogg Biological Station and Michigan State University for graduate school. She received her Ph.D. in Zoology and Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior from MSU in 2006. From there, she moved to the University of Wisconsin for her postdoctoral research, which was supported by an NSF postdoctoral fellowship in biological informatics. From 2008-2012, she was an assistant professor in the School of Biology at Georgia Tech. She joined the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology faculty at U-M in August 2012.

Constrained and Spectral-Spatial RF Pulse Design for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for modern medicine, providing a non-invasive glimpse inside the human body with excellent soft tissue contrast and no ionizing radiation. The radio frequency (RF) pulse in an MRI acquisition is integral to producing an image and can be tailored to particular applications. This thesis focuses on the design of RF pulses and explores the MRI physics, convex optimization problems, and experimental methodologies behind doing so.

First, we introduce constrained RF pulse design which enables efficient RF pulse design with meaningful, physical constraints such as peak RF amplitude and integrated RF power. We explore constrained RF pulse design for simultaneous multislice imaging, a powerful tool for accelerating MRI and combatting notoriously long acquisition times. Compared to a conventional simultaneous multislice pulse designed without constraints, our constrained pulses achieved lower magnitude normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) for an equivalent RF pulse length, or alternatively, the same NRMSE for a shorter pulse length. Constrained RF pulse design forms a basis for the rest of the dissertation.

Secondly, we describe a special class of RF pulses, “prewinding pulses”, that help correct for intravoxel dephasing due to magnetic field inhomogeneity, that can lead to signal loss. We propose a spectral-spatial prewinding pulse that leverages a larger effective recovery bandwidth than equivalent, purely spectral pulses. In an in vivo experiment imaging the brain of a human volunteer, we designed spectral-spatial pulses with a complex NMRSE of 0.18, which is significantly improved from the complex NRMSE of 0.54 in the purely spectral pulse for the same experiment.

Finally, we consider a slab-selective prewinding pulse, that extends spectral and spectral-spatial prewinding pulses to a common 3D imaging method. Here we integrate optimal control optimization to further improve the slab-selective spectral pulse design and see an in vivo improvement of excitation NRMSE from 0.40 to 0.37 and a major reduction in mean residual magnetization magnitude after a tip-up pulse from 0.18 to 0.02 when adding optimal control. This method has the potential to connect prewinding pulse design from the MRI physicist engineering workspace to a clinical application.

In summary, we show that constrained RF pulse design provides an efficient way of improving MRI in terms of acquisition speed (via multislice imaging) and image quality (via signal recovery).

Abstract:

Genetically-encoded biosensors based on fluorescence proteins (FPs) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) have enabled the specific targeting and visualization of signaling events in live cells with high spatiotemporal resolutions. Single-molecule FRET biosensors have been successfully developed to monitor the activity of a variety of signaling molecules, including tyrosine/serine/threonine kinases. We have a developed a general high-throughput screening (HTS) method based on directed evolution to develop sensitive and specific FRET biosensors. We have first applied a yeast library and screened for a mutated binding domain for phosphorylated peptide sequence. When this mutated binding domain and the peptide sequence are connected by a linker and then concatenated in between a pair of FRET FPs, a drastic increase in sensitivity can be achieved. It has also been increasingly clear that controlling protein functions using lights and chemical compounds to trigger allosteric conformational changes can be applied to manipulate protein functions and control cellular behaviors. In this work, we first engineered a novel class of machinery molecules which can provide a surveillance of the intracellular space, visualizing the spatiotemporal patterns of molecular events and automatically triggering corresponding molecular actions to guide cellular functions. We have adopted a modular assembly approach to develop these machinery molecules. As a proof-of-concept, we engineered such a molecule for the sensing of intracellular tyrosine phosphorylation based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and the consequent activation of a tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) Shp2, which plays a critical and positive role in various pathophysiological processes. We have further integrated this machinery molecule to the “don’t eat me” CD47 receptor SIRPa on macrophages such that the engagement of SIRPa and its activation of naturally negative signals will be rewired to turn on the positive Shp2 action to facilitate phagocytosis of red blood cells and target tumor cells, initiated by the specific antigen-targeting antibodies and their interaction with Fcg receptors. Because of the modular design of our engineered molecule, our approach can be extended to perform a broad range of cell-based imaging and immunotherapies, and hence highlight the translational power in bridging the fundamental molecular engineering to clinical medicine. We have also integrated with lights and ultrasound to manipulate the molecular activation of genes and enzymes, which allowed us to control the cellular functions of immunocells with high precision in space and time. As such, we can integrate fundamental science and engineering principles for biomedical and clinical applications.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Neither the mechanisms by which genomic heterogeneity emerges within naturally occurring microbial populations, nor how it drives the partitioning of ecological niches are well understood. Yet the increasing number of environmental metagenomes with astonishing depth of sequencing offer new opportunities to investigate evolutionary processes acting upon them, and link genomic variation to predicted tertiary structures of genes to gain biochemical insights.

The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research, and are beautiful in their detail, form and symmetry. For each one, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells, tissues and organs, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants, worms, fruit flies, fish, mice and yes, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma, bipolar disease, epilepsy and cancer.

Oceanic islands and archipelagos provide simplified biological communities compared to continental settings, making them useful systems for ecological and evolutionary investigation. Much of our general understanding of how such insular communities assemble over time comes from top-down extrapolations of process from species distribution data and molecular phylogenetic data. Here I will argue that to connect pattern with process, geographically explicit individual-based bottom-up approaches are needed that are broadly representative of the community itself. We have been working toward this, developing community-level sampling protocols for arthropod taxa that integrate DNA sequencing techniques to simultaneously facilitate taxonomic assignment and test hypotheses about the drivers of speciation. I will present results that reveal the subtle but pervasive impacts of island topography and climate that act in concert to drive speciation across entire arthropod communities. I will also present data from recent efforts within our research group to overcome the logistical constraints of geographic and taxonomic scale for comparative molecular analysis of invertebrate communities.

Nanoparticles Meet Biological Membranes: Probing Interaction Using Molecular Simulations (September 21, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53428 53428-13381397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 21, 2018 4:00pm

Abstract:
Over the past decade, with advances in high-performance computing and data science, theory,
simulation, and computation continue to partner with experiment in discovery and innovation in
nanoscience and nanotechnology. Some of the most exciting applications are in the field of biomedicine. Indeed, a detailed understanding of the molecular details of interactions between nanoparticles and biological nanosystems, such as membranes or macromolecules is crucial for obtaining adequate information on mechanisms of action of nanomaterials as well as a perspective on the long-term effects of these materials and their possible toxicological outcomes. In this talk I will report on a new model that we are developing to understand and to predict the interactions between carbon-based nanomaterials and biological membranes using structure-based computational molecular modeling. A rationale on how nanoparticles of different sizes, shape, structure and chemical properties can affect the organization of cellular membranes is also presented. This critical information will help enable the “safe-by-design” production of engineered nanoparticles that are nontoxic or biocompatible, and also allow for the design of antimicrobial nanoparticles for environmental and biomedical applications.

Plants interact with both a variety of community members (other plants, the microbial community, pollinators, herbivores) and are exposed to a variety of abiotic environmental stressors (drought and changing climate, human-mediated agents of selection). These interactions are often examined at the phenotypic level by evolutionary ecologists whereas the mechanistic basis of such interactions are detailed by molecular geneticists; longer-term outcomes of such interactions are assessed by paleobiologists. It is rare, however, that plant-environment interactions are examined across scales within the same system, i.e. from genes, to molecular mechanism, phenotype, fitness, and deeper evolutionary patterns across time. The aim of this conference is to highlight the work of prominent evolutionary ecologists, molecular geneticists, ecophysiologists, and paleobiologists at the University of Michigan and beyond that examine similar plant-interaction phenomena but at very different scales of study. Our overall goal is to stimulate new collaborations and novel takes on overlapping phenomenon studied across scales.

Folded Viral RNAs that Sense and Manipulate the Host Cell Machinery: Windows to RNA Structure-Based Regulation (September 28, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53429 53429-13381398@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 28, 2018 4:00pm

Abstract: RNA is perhaps the most functionally diverse biological macromolecule, due in large part to its ability to adopt a wide range of conformationally dynamic structures. The Kieft Lab is interested in understanding how RNA can adopt diverse three-dimensional folds, how those folds give rise to its many biological roles, and how conformational changes confer RNA’s ability to regulate so many processes. We are particularly interested in viral RNAs, which are fine-tuned by evolution to elegantly and powerfully interact with and manipulate the cellular machinery of the host cell; these viral RNAs provide a “window” into the greater RNA world. In this presentation, I will present some of our recent findings in regard to a viral RNA that adopts an unexpected tertiary structure. This RNA element undergoes programmed conformational changes that are triggered by its interactions with the host cell machinery and this is responsible for its unique function. This RNA may be a paradigm for novel modes of regulation linked to dynamic RNA conformational changes.

Island faunas have inspired evolutionary biologists for centuries and I am especially captivated by the enigmatic history of amphibians on islands. Over the last ten years I have been studying amphibian diversification in the Gulf of Guinea archipelago, a chain of islands off the coast of Central Africa that is composed of one land-bridge island (Bioko) and three oceanic islands (Príncipe, São Tomé, and Annobón). In this talk I integrate genomic, behavioral, ecological and morphological data to investigate the colonization history and diversification of the archipelago’s amphibian fauna.

By looking at these microscopic images, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma, bipolar disease, epilepsy and cancer.

EEB Thursday Seminar: Evolution of the essential gap gene giant causes hybrid inviability in Drosophila (October 11, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49650 49650-11487535@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 11, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building

Hybrids have reduced fitness because of faulty interactions among genes that have diverged between the pure species. The most extreme hybrid defect is inviability. Hybrids therefore provide an easy to screen phenotype to identify what genes and molecular pathways have functionally diverged as genomes differentiate. Here I identify the Drosophila melanogaster allele of the highly conserved and essential gap gene giant (gt) as a key genetic determinant of hybrid inviability in crosses with D. santomea. The presence of this allele in D. melanogaster/D. santomea hybrids causes an abdominal ablation not seen in either pure species. giant is a key developmental regulator whose role in anterior-posterior specification of the dipteran embryo is conserved over 100 million years. The interaction of giant with a second allele, tailless, tll, is involved in the hybrid defects observed in these Drosophila hybrids. These results indicate that even genes with crucial developmental roles that are conserved over vast evolutionary time scales can experience functional evolution that leads to inviability of hybrids

Tom Hugh-Jones is the producer of the David Attenborough-narrated Planet Earth BBC series and has spent twenty-two years producing natural history and science documentaries for broadcasters such as BBC, National Geographic, and Discovery. When he was just four years old, Tom’s anthropologist parents took him to live with a tribal community in the Colombian Amazon, sowing the seeds of his passion for adventure in the wild. Since then, Hugh-Jones has worked on many prolific titles such as Planet Earth, Human Planet, and Life Story, taking audiences around the world into the beating heart of breath-taking moments, close encounters, spectacular failures, and places no human should ever go.

Hugh-Jones will also bring special guests from Blue Planet Production to discuss the teamwork and process of making Planet Earth and its companion BBC show, Blue Planet. Guests include producer/director Rachael Butler and Pam and Tim Fogg of Rope Access Specialists, a team of experts in rope-access rigging and safety when shooting in difficult-to-reach locales such as caves, volcanoes, and cliffs.

Co-Presented by U-M Museum of Natural History’s William R. Farrand Memorial Lecture with support from U-M Institute for the Humanities.

NOTE TIME & LOCATION CHANGE

Abstract
Trait-based approaches are increasingly seen as a way to reduce the complexity of ecological communities and to incorporate functional diversity in ecosystem models. In this talk I will present Elena Litchman's and my lab's work applying trait-based ideas to marine and freshwater plankton communities. First, I will describe empirical patterns in the resource utilization and thermal traits we found using meta-analyses of published eco-physiological traits. Second, I will discuss trait-based approaches to modeling ecological and eco-evolutionary dynamics and how they can enhance our understanding of community structure in heterogeneous environments. Finally, I will describe recent theory on how local selection and immigration from the regional species pool interact to determine distribution of commonness and rarity in ecological communities and an experimental test.

EEB Thursday Seminar: The biogeography of body size: using population genomics to delineate individuals in the native and invasive ranges of the death cap fungus (October 25, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49652 49652-11487537@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 25, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building

The dispersal and biogeography of fungi are poorly understood, in part because individuals grow hidden within substrates and are difficult to see or count. The fungus Amanita phalloides is deadly poisonous and a rich literature records its history in Europe and America; the death cap is invasive in California. After briefly describing its history in North America, I will talk about the population genomics data we are using to delineate individuals (or genets). By collecting and genotyping mapped populations of fungi from California, Europe, and the Northeast U.S., we are discovering that most mushrooms in a habitat are unique genetic individuals. Data suggest that genets of A. phalloides are typically less than 1 m in diameter. The pattern holds across California, Europe, and the Northeast, and is the same for sites where populations are assumed to be young, and sites where A. phalloides has been collected for over 30 years. In fact, data collected at different time points from the same sites evince the same structures, even when populations are collected 10 years apart. There appears to be no correlation between body size and geographic origin or age of a population, moreover, dispersal appears highly local: most spores appear to fall just next to their source.

Abstract:
Basement membranes are an ancient form of extracellular matrix that assemble as thin, dense sheets that underlie most tissues. Basement membranes regulate numerous cellular and tissue functions, and basement membrane dysregulation is a hallmark of many cancers and a driver of tumor progression. Despite their importance, we know little about how basement membranes are uniquely constructed, how they grow, how they turnover, and how they regulate so many cell and tissue properties.

C. elegans is a powerful model to understand basement membrane function, as it has single genes encoding most basement membrane matrix components and receptors. We have used CRISPR/Cas-9 genome editing to create a basement membrane toolkit, where we have knocked genes encoding fluorescent proteins into all major basement membrane matrix components (18 genes) and receptors (13 genes). I will present a brief overview of how we are using the basement membrane toolkit to elucidate how basement membranes are constructed, how they grow, and the dynamic nature of basement membranes, including diverse turnover rates of basement membrane components (seconds to hours). Finally, I will discuss how the toolkit is revealing specialized, non-sheet functions for basement membrane proteins, such as linking neighboring tissues together and constructing stem cell niches.

About the Speaker:
David Sherwood, Ph.D., grew up in Champaign, Illinois, and spent summers backpacking in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University (with a year in Durham, England) in 1990. He received his Ph.D. in the lab of David McClay, Ph.D., from Duke University Department of Biology in 1997, where his thesis work identified and determined the function of the sea urchin Notch receptor. Dave carried out his postdoctoral work in the lab of Paul Sternberg, Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology, where he was trained in C. elegans genetics and cell biology. He joined the faculty at Duke University in 2005, where he is now a Professor of Biology, Co-Director of the Regeneration Next Initiative for Regenerative Biology, Director of the Development and Stem Cell Biology Program, and Co-Director of the Embryology Course in at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. His research focuses on elucidating cell-extracellular matrix interactions that occur during cell invasion, stem cell niche formation, and tissue formation, growth and regeneration.

Boxed lunch will be provided.

EEB Thursday Seminar: The evolution of extreme phenotypic convergence across fish lineages in the hyper-diverse lower Congo River (November 8, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49654 49654-11487539@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 8, 2018 4:00pm

Recent estimates of species richness in the Congo basin vary but converge on a number close to 1270. However, that diversity is not evenly partitioned and the lower Congo River (LCR) is highlighted as a hotspot of species richness and endemism within the basin. In marked contrast to the river upstream of Pool Malebo, the LCR channel is entirely bedrock, and littoral habitats are mostly rocky and rock strewn. In situ measurements have recorded dramatic changes in channel topology and in addition to fluctuating bed bathymetry, regions of extreme depth have also been recorded. A combination of high annual discharge, steep elevational incline, and fluctuating channel width and depth result in high-energy flow regimes throughout the system. These hydrological features appear to play a key role in isolating fish populations by restricting both cross-channel and upstream-downstream movement, and likely present powerful drivers for micro-allopatric isolation often over remarkably small geographical scales.

Among the many species endemic to the LCR are a group of distantly related fishes exhibiting a striking series of multi-trait morphological convergence (including microphthalmia or eye loss, depigmentation, laterosensory enhancement etc.). These “cryptophthalmic” forms have arisen independently in at least six phylogenetically disparate families (Cichlidae, Mastacembelidae, Mochokidae, Claroteidae, Clariidae, Mormyridae), likely in response to similar selective pressures within the extreme environments of the LCR. Here I will present results of an ongoing investigation to characterize and quantify of this case of extreme eco-morphological convergence.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: U-M College of Pharmacy

Does the much-maligned carbon dioxide, a driving force behind global warming, deserve its bad rap?

In his upcoming Distinguished University Professor lecture, Gordon L. Amidon, PhD’71, will explore carbon dioxide from many angles, “the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

The talk will take place at 4 p.m. on November 14 in the Rackham Amphitheatre. The lecture and reception that follows are free and open to the public.

Prof. Gordon L. Amidon is the William I. Higuchi Distinguished University Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His research aims to understand the gastrointestinal factors that control drug absorption from an oral drug product.

“I will present a modest attempt to resurrect the image of carbon dioxide,” explains Amidon. “While global warming and the role that atmospheric gases play in the ‘green house’ effect has received considerable attention in the scientific and public press, I will point to the more positive role of carbon dioxide in evolution and in biology.”

Distinguished University Professorships recognize exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievements, national and international reputation, superior teaching and mentoring, and an impressive record of service. Each Professor delivers a lecture of their choosing during this event.

Predators kill prey thereby affecting populations and ecosystems. Predators also scare prey, and the fear of being killed is a powerful evolutionary force that has always shaped all life on earth. But whether fear can be powerful enough to operate over ecological time in wildlife is intensely debated because demonstrating that fear effects exist for wildlife requires manipulations which are challenging to do for free-living animals. We have been conducting a variety of manipulations on a wide range of wildlife, from birds to lions, in many different places in the world that are demonstrating that fear affects wildlife from the brain, to behaviour and physiology, to populations, with cascading effects down the food chain. Our research further reveals that fear of predators can inform us about human mental health and can be used as a tool to diagnose the extent of human impacts on the environment as well.

Join CGIS International Programs Advisor, Cristina Zamarron and representatives from the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute Thailand as they will discuss one of CGIS's newest programs Sustainable Food Systems and Ecology in Chaing Mai, Thailand!!

This 3-week, 3-credit Maize Away program examines the issues in sustainable food production in Thailand. Perhaps one of the most challenging topics in sustainability studies, sustainable food systems are critical to creating a sustainable future.

This course will look at commercial chemical-intensive agriculture, study both lowland and upland agriculture as practiced in Thailand, and spend extended time in the fields and gardens of farmers and villagers. This course will examine comparisons between large scale agroindustry with smallholder agriculture, with special emphasis on organic farming and agroecology.
Students will spend extended time in the field learning about both the biology of sustainable agriculture as well as the social and political issues surrounding sustainable agriculture and current commercial food systems.

Students will travel to Don Jieng, in Northern Thailand to visit local farm groups, then to Ban Dang Nai to look at look at the impacts of agricultural extension efforts on village livelihood, culture, environment, and more!

EEB Thursday Seminar: The evolution of polymorphic hybrid male sterility in house mice (November 29, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49656 49656-11487541@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 29, 2018 4:00pm

Reproductive barriers are often thought of as fixed between species, yet recently diverged species often have polymorphic reproductive incompatibilities. This lecture will focus on the genetic basis of variable hybrid male sterility in house mice. I will focus on two mechanisms— transmission ratio distortion of hybrid incompatibilities and the regulatory disruption of the X chromosome during spermatogenesis. I will also discuss the implications of this variation on gene flow in the house mouse hybrid zone, and the maintenance of species boundaries.

Host: Matt Chapman
Abstract: The intersection between synthetic biology and materials science is an underexplored area with great potential to positively affect our daily lives, with applications ranging from manufacturing to medicine. My group is interested in harnessing the biosynthetic potential of microbes, not only as factories for the production of raw materials, but as fabrication plants that can orchestrate the assembly of complex functional materials. We call this approach “biologically fabricated materials”, a process whose goal is to genetically program microbes to assemble materials from protein-based building blocks without the need for time consuming and expensive purification protocols or specialized equipment. Accordingly, we have developed Biofilm Integrated Nanofiber Display (BIND), which relies on the biologically directed assembly of biofilm matrix proteins of the curli system in E. coli. We demonstrate that bacterial cells can be programmed to synthesize a range of functional materials with straightforward genetic engineering techniques. The resulting materials are highly customizable and easy to fabricate, and we are investigating their use for practical uses ranging from bioremediation to engineered therapeutic probiotics.

John Megahan is the senior scientific illustrator at the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan since 1996. He holds a Master in Biology and eventually discovered the profession of biological illustration. He committed to freelance biological illustration for several years before joining the Museum of Zoology. While John enjoys the challenge of doing illustrations for others, he finds that as he matures, expressing his own artistic vision is becoming important to him. He is now looking forward to creating art that reflects his own interpretations of nature, life and the environment.

This exhibit gives a peek at the kinds of topics he hopes to pursue. He painted species that are threatened, endangered or have disappeared from Michigan and also of the flying squirrel, species that is being carefully watched by biologists as its distribution is changing and they are not sure why. He invites the viewer to see the show and find out about some interesting theories.

Going, Going, Gone runs from November through January.
