Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
What aspect of corporate culture is so deep that it affects our hearts, minds, and the organizational bottom line? In this session, O’Neill introduces the undiscovered domain she calls “emotional culture” and demonstrates how cultures comprised of positive emotions such as love, joviality, and awe have benefits not only for employees’ own individual well-being, but also for teams, clients, and the corporate bottom line. Building on her Harvard Business Review article, “Manage Your Emotional Culture,” O’Neill will highlight real-world case studies from across different industries and share practical tips for how managers, HR business partners, and individual change agents can diagnose, manage, and change their emotional cultures.

About O’Neill:
Olivia (Mandy) O'Neill, PhD, is a Visiting Scholar at the Haas School of Business, University of California (2018-2019). She is also Associate Professor of Management at the George Mason University School of Business and Senior Scientist at the university’s Center for the Advancement of Well-Being. Data Privacy and Portability in Financial Technology Symposium (February 23, 2019 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/58000 58000-14390313@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 23, 2019 8:30am
Location: South Hall
Organized By: Center on Finance, Law, and Policy

The Data Privacy and Portability in Financial Technology Symposium celebrates Michigan Technology Law Review’s 25th Anniversary by hosting an event dedicated to cutting edge scholarship at the intersection of technology and the law. Specifically, this symposium is designed to examine the inherent tensions between securing privacy rights and the ease at which transactions occur, facilitated by new innovative technologies.

Data portability is the idea that a consumer should own his or her own data and should be able to tell companies to use it, transfer it to another company, or destroy it. Every day, hundreds of millions of transactions occur between parties. Nearly everyone uses financial products that harvest data—credit cards, online shopping, stock market trends. New technologies allow people and organizations to record, analyze, and indefinitely store data points associated with these transactions more easily than ever before.

Many of those in the financial technology world assert that this aggregation of consumer data should be able to be sold to and owned by third parties. This would increase competition in the financial service sector and facilitate the development of more complex algorithms used to deliver financial services. Collecting information on consumer habits could lead to innovation in predicting market trends and could allow custom tailoring to individual consumer needs. Many banks, however, contend that opening up consumer information to third parties raises serious risks of fraud and abuse. Both sides of the debate advocate for the consumer’s interest: banks on the grounds of security and privacy, and the fintech sector on the grounds of access and innovation.

The symposium will address the legal issues implicated by the exciting and rapidly developing world of financial technology, such as: Who owns a customer’s financial data? How will the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) influence how companies handle customer data? How can U.S. policymakers construct a sensible policy framework suited to the particular regulatory and technical attributes of the U.S. consumer financial services sector? And how should we conceive of increased liability for companies and what does that mean for organizations’ relationships with consumers, stockholders, lenders and the like?

Food for Thought: How two local leaders cultivated mindful careers in the specialty food and food bank sector

Paul Saginaw, Partner, and Co-Founder of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses and Food Gatherers
Eileen Spring, President/CEO of Food Gatherers

In 1988 and a few days before Thanksgiving, Food Gatherers became Michigan’s first food rescue program and the first program of its kind to be founded by a small local business, Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Today, co-founder Paul Saginaw is a partner to the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses powered by nearly 600 people in ten different businesses with nearly $60M in annual sales. Eileen Spring, who has been in her role for 24 years, has worked to meet rising levels of food insecurity with a staff of 30 people, more than 7,000 volunteers who deliver 6.5 M pounds of food to people struggling with food insecurity in Washtenaw County. Join us to hear from these two respected local leaders from different sectors but with a singular purpose to provide food to people with excellent service, dignity, and purpose.

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
At some point in our careers, each of us will struggle with balancing competing demands on our time. Work life can be hectic in any organization, resulting in burnout, errors, stunted creativity, and poor performance. Incorporating mindfulness into our work lives might be one way to help restore equilibrium.

In this lively and engaging talk, Saint and Chopra will share research on how practices of mindfulness can be established within the oceans of chaos to fuel “heartfulness,” restoring kindness and compassion. Mindfulness-based interventions engender attitudes of curiosity and connection that allow us to listen attentively, recognize errors, refine skills, and focus on mission—ultimately leading to better performance. Saint and Chopra will offer various strategies and approaches—so-called “intersectional innovations” (or aha moments)—that can be used to improve personal and organizational performance.

About Saint:
Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH, is the Chief of Medicine at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the George Dock Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan.

His research focuses on patient safety, implementation science, and medical decision-making. Scalable Bayesian Inference with Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (March 22, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61942 61942-15241348@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 22, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Abstract: Despite the promise of big data, inferences are often limited not by sample size but rather by systematic effects. Only by carefully modeling these effects can we take full advantage of the data -- big data must be complemented with big models and the algorithms that can fit them. One such algorithm is Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, which exploits the inherent geometry of the posterior distribution to admit full Bayesian inference that scales to the complex models of practical interest. In this talk I will present a conceptual discussion of the challenges inherent to Bayesian computation and the foundations of why Hamiltonian Monte Carlo in uniquely suited to surmount them.

Bio: Michael Betancourt is the principal research scientist with Symplectomorphic, LLC where he develops theoretical and methodological tools to support practical Bayesian inference. He is also a core developer of Stan, where he implements and tests these tools. In addition to hosting tutorials and workshops on Bayesian inference with Stan he also collaborates on analyses in epidemiology, pharmacology, and physics, amongst others. Before moving into statistics, Michael earned a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in physics.

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Ceres and the Energy Institute at the University of Michigan are partnering to host a Public Presentation to discuss policies and partnerships for accelerating fleet electrification for public and private entities.

In an effort to unlock the benefits and accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles and fleets, these two events will focus on the major stakeholders who could (1) benefit from EVs or fleet electrification and (2) play a key role in accelerating the deployment of EVs. This includes: large fleet operators–companies, institutions and municipalities–along with auto manufacturers, regulators, utilities, and electric vehicle technology and policy experts.

Prior to this event, Ceres and the Energy Institute will interview these key stakeholders, in an effort to answer three primary questions:
-What factors motivate fleet operators to transition to electric vehicles?

-What are the biggest perceived barriers to fleet electrification or EV procurement?

-Which policies and/or partnerships can encourage widespread adoption of EVs?

Social Worth Affirmation (April 5, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61127 61127-15036281@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 5, 2019 1:30pm

Teams often fail to reach their potential because each member’s need to feel accepted prevents him or her from offering their unique perspective or information to the team. Drawing on self-affirmation theory, we propose that social worth affirmation – which we define as the process by which an individual’s unique contributions are affirmed by social relationships – can prepare individuals to contribute to team performance more effectively. We theorize that affirming team members’ social worth spills over to the new team context, thereby decreasing their social concerns about being accepted by other members. This, in turn, leads to better information exchange and performance in teams. In a first field experiment, we found that teams in which members experienced social worth affirmation prior to team formation performed better on a problem-solving task (compared to teams without social worth affirmation). In a second experiment, conducted using task-oriented teams in the U.S. military, we tested a full model that social worth affirmation influences information exchange and team performance by reducing members’ concerns about social acceptance. In the third experiment using virtual teams, we find that social worth affirmation improves teams’ ability to exchange information by sharing unique information cues.

Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Abstract: The Data Science group at The New York Times develops and deploys machine learning solutions to newsroom and business problems. Re-framing real-world questions as machine learning tasks requires not only adapting and extending models and algorithms to new or special cases but also sufficient breadth to know the right method for the right challenge. I’ll first outline how unsupervised, supervised, and reinforcement learning methods are increasingly used in human applications for description, prediction, and prescription, respectively. I’ll then focus on the ‘prescriptive’ cases, showing how methods from the reinforcement learning and causal inference literatures can be of direct impact in engineering, business, and decision-making more generally.

Bio: At Columbia, Chris is a founding member of the executive committee of the Data Science Institute, the Department of Systems Biology, and is affiliated faculty in Statistics. He is a co-founder and co-organizer of hackNY (http://hackNY.org), a nonprofit which since 2010 has organized once a semester student hackathons and the hackNY Fellows Program, a structured summer internship at NYC startups. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia he was a Courant Instructor at NYU (1998-2001) and earned his PhD at Princeton University (1993-1998) in theoretical physics. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and is a recipient of Columbia’s Avanessians Diversity Award.

For our final "Dinners with..." of the semester, BLI is thrilled to welcome Mary Schlitt, our very own BLI associate director!

As a LSA undergrad at the University of Michigan, Mary discovered both her capacity for leadership and love for the nonprofit sector during an internship at the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair. After advancing the missions of four respected nonprofit organizations, Mary has returned to the University of Michigan and the Barger Leadership Institute to seek collaborations that generate opportunity and resources for undergraduates. In her most recent role as chief development officer at Food Gatherers, she was responsible for both the financial success of the organization and, as part of a leadership team, managed the day-to-day operations of the entire organization. As the BLI Associate Director, Mary will have primary operational responsibility for all aspects of the institute’s day to day management. She will develop relationships with and serve as liaison to partners on and off campus, and work with potential donors and stewardship of existing alumni relationships in partnership with LSA Advancement. Mary will additionally aid the Director in the strategic development and funding of new programs and opportunities in the region and around the world.

Mary, a 2017 +Lab Fellow, through the Center for Positive Organizations, Ross School of Business, holds holds a Master of Public Administration and a bachelor's in psychology from the University of Michigan.

Attendees MUST RSVP at the sessions link (see web links).

Can we improve musicians’ opportunities to earn money from music?

The amount of revenue generated by the music and recording industries
is massive, and by most accounts, increasing. Musicians and composers
receive only a tiny fraction of that money, and many of them complain
that that share has been getting smaller.

Students will discuss how working musicians and composers can earn more money from their music.

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
We have little control over our environment and the challenges that come our way. But there is something we can do about our internal environment: the state of our mind, our ability to handle challenges, and bounce back. In this session, Seppälä will explore different empirically validated techniques to improve our emotional intelligence, our social connection, and our ability to endure and thrive no matter what comes our way.

About Seppälä:
Emma Seppälä, PhD is Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and the author of The Happiness Track (HarperOne, 2016). She is Co-Director of the Yale College Emotional Intelligence Project at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and Faculty Director of the Yale School of Management’s Women’s Leadership Program.

She consults with Fortune 500 leaders and employees on building a positive organization. She has spoken at TedX Sacramento, TEDx Hayward, and companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Bain & Co, Ernst & Young, and a United States Congressional Hearing. Her articles have been featured in Harvard Business Review, The Washington Post, Business Insider, Psychology Today, Fast Company, Forbes, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and NPR. She has also been a repeat guest on Good Morning America.

We will examine the numerous ways that technology, competition, globalization, and trade have affected American businesses and the nature of work. Some of the most iconic companies such as Eastman Kodak, Bethlehem Steel, and Westinghouse have gone bankrupt or disappeared, while newer types of companies such as Amazon and Uber are ascending. In their heyday, large corporations were integral to the growth of the middle class by offering lifetime employment and benefits. But today, many traditional and new-age companies treat employees as contractors and they need fewer workers to achieve economic values comparable to businesses of the past. We will read and discuss “The Vanishing American Corporation” by U of M professor Gerald Davis. (OLLI members may remember his lecture last fall on the future of work). The author tracks the rise of the large corporation and then describes the economic, social, and technological developments that have led to its decline. He shows how these trends are leading to income inequality and social instability. Dr. Davis goes on to describe the future of business and how workers can navigate changing conditions.

Instructor Gerry Lapidus contributed professionally to the emergence of the new tech world and has conducted over 50 OLLI book discussion classes. Please read through Section 2 for the first meeting.

This study group for those 50 and over will meet for two hours on Mondays from September 16 through October 21 (except on September 30)

Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Creativity is responsible for all human progress. Unfortunately, powerful forces in most classroom, workplace, and home environments can kill the motivation for creativity. In this interactive session, Harvard Professor Teresa Amabile will describe the science underlying these discoveries, as well as the science behind keeping creativity alive. The audience will leave with tips and tools for nurturing their own creativity and facilitating creative growth in their children, students, and work colleagues.

About Amabile:
Teresa Amabile has researched and written about creativity for over 40 years. Beginning with a series of papers in the 1970s and 1980s, she was instrumental in establishing the social psychology of creativity – the study of how the social environment can influence creative behavior, primarily by influencing motivational state.

Amabile’s research has examined individual creativity and productivity, team creativity, and organizational innovation. This program of research has yielded a comprehensive theory of creativity and innovation; methods for assessing creativity, motivation, and the work environment; and a set of prescriptions for maintaining and stimulating both individual creativity and organizational innovation.

Her more recent research investigated how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their performance by affecting inner work life, the confluence of motivation, emotion, and perceptions. She is currently studying retirement and post-employment life, including the impact of creative activities on attitudes toward aging and experiences in later life.

Amabile’s scholarly work has appeared in a variety of psychology and organizational behavior journals, as well as her 2011 book (with Steven Kramer), The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. She has presented her work to audiences in a variety of settings, including Pixar, Genentech, TEDx Atlanta, Apple, and The World Economic Forum in Davos.

In 2018, Amabile received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Israel Organizational Behavior Conference, and the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2011 and 2013, she was named to the global Thinkers50 list.

Amabile holds a BS in Chemistry from Canisius College and a PhD in psychology from Stanford University.

Since the 1980s, Japan’s foreign policy, including its trade policy, has been known to be “reactive.” Subsequent studies have modified this rather monotonic characterization, but to date, no one has found that Japan is willing and able to take a strong leadership role in a multilateral setting. By historical standards, however, Japan’s leadership in concluding TPP-11 negotiations was rather remarkable. Is Japan finally proactive? It will be demonstrated that Japan found itself in an unusual set of circumstances in TPP-11 and that one cannot generalize from this episode that Japan is now a proactive international player.

Keisuke Iida is a Professor in the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics at the University of Tokyo. Multinational corporations grow around the world by hiring the best local talent and transferring their best practices between different regions. But Ujjwal Kumar, who for the last 20 years has led global businesses and growth ventures at multiple multinationals, believes a more nuanced approach is needed to build profitable, sustainable and high-growth businesses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Kumar, who received his MBA from U-M's Ross School of Business in 2005, will discuss how achieving good, high-growth business models requires a clear understanding of local capabilities and the risks involved.

Project Management Certification (October 6, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126018@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 6, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://tauber.umich.edu/events-training/project-management-certification/2019-03-24/project-management-certification-2019

Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and a rising source globally. Technology advances and falling costs for energy storage and renewable energy are now poised to create a historic opportunity to transition the sector to electrified mobility. At this year's TE3 event, conference participants will explore this exciting transition through sessions addressing consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs), vehicle charging, the role of a cleaner electric grid, the economics of EVs and the interactions among different policies. The conference will close with a high-level panel discussion about the tensions that confront EV-related policy development in the world's leading vehicle markets.

TE3 2019 will be held on Friday, October 18 in Rackham Amphiteatre.

From a paper co-authored by Yongheng Deng (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Shang-Jin Wei (Columbia University, FISF, and NBER) and Jing Wu (Tsinghua University)

Professor Deng and his co-authors propose a method to estimate not only the relative size of unofficial incomes but also the pervasiveness of corruption based on large asset purchases. Additionally, they applied this idea to a unique Chinese data and provide a first estimate of the proportion of officials who take in unofficial incomes. They have found that an average official’s unofficial income is 83% of his/her official income, and 57% of the officials have an unofficial income and this proportion rises with the rank. They also tested and reject the notion that unofficial incomes are a compensation for below-the-market government salaries.

Yongheng Deng is a Professor and the John P. Morgridge Distinguished Chair in Business, in the Department of Real Estate and Urban Land Economics, Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining Wisconsin School of Business, Professor Deng has served as a Provost's Chair Professor of Real Estate and Finance, Director of the Institute of Real Estate Studies, and Head of the Department of Real Estate, at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He was also a Professor in the Department of Finance at NUS Business School, and Director of the Lifecycle Financing Research Program at NUS Global Asia Institute. Professor Deng was also a Professor at the University of Southern California (USC), School of Policy, Planning and Development, and the Marshall School of Business.

Professor Deng holds a Ph.D. in Economics from University of California at Berkeley, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Wharton Real Estate Center, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While Professor Deng’s recent research interest is in evaluating conditions in Asian and China’s real estate markets; his research pertains to a wide variety of issues in residential and commercial real estate finance and capital market worldwide. That includes real estate related financial capital market and asset-backed security pricing and risk analysis, econometric analysis of competing risks of mortgage prepayment and default with unobserved heterogeneity.

Professor Deng has published his research works in leading economics and finance journals. Some of those journals include “Econometrica,” “Journal of Financial Economics,” “Journal of Urban Economics,” “Review of Finance,” “China Economic Review,” “European Economic Review,” “Capitalism and Society,” and “Real Estate Economics,” among others. Major global media have frequently cited his research works, for example, “Wall Street Journal,” “New York Times,” “Economist Magazine,” “Telegraph,” “Forbes,” “People’s Daily” (China), and more.

Location: Center for the Education of Women
Organized By: CEW+

The workshop is from 2-3:30, followed by a networking reception until 4:00.

There are several psychological and professional considerations that solo persons can use to survive in organizations and create change. The objectives of this workshop are (a) to focus on one professional consideration, namely, coalition building across social identity lines, and (b) to reflect on how three psychological considerations based on the social psychologist Serge Moscovici’s work can be utilized to create change. Part 1 will be to create a better understanding of the differences, but also the similarities we have with others and how our own social identity and cultural background could potentially limit us in building successful coalitions. Part 2 will introduce Moscovici’s work concerning how solo persons need to be persistent and consistent and have the self-confidence to bring about change. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss how these principles can be applied to their own situation and share strategies that might result in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their own organizational environment

Leader Emotional Unpredictability Tears Teams Apart: Effects on Power Struggles and Team Performance (November 15, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65123 65123-16517537@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 15, 2019 1:30pm

Emotional displays of leaders convey social information to followers that can help bolster their motivation and understanding of the situation, thereby facilitating team performance. An implicit assumption in previous theorizing and research using this social-functional approach to leader emotions has been that leaders’ emotional expressions logically follow from the situation for followers and thus help followers who observe these expressions to better understand the situation. However, leader's emotional expressions are not always predictable to followers. We extend the social-functional approach by investigating what happens when leader emotional displays are perceived as unpredictable by followers. We propose that leader emotional unpredictability sparks uncertainty among followers about how the leader allocates ranks and resources within the team, which triggers intra-team power struggles. Such power struggles—intra-team conflicts over resources among followers—in turn undermine team performance. Using a multi-method approach, we find support for our model in three studies, including two laboratory experiments and a field study of 246 retail teams. The findings inform our understanding of how leaders’ emotional displays influence team performance, extending the social-functional approach to emotion by illuminating how the perceived unpredictability of leaders’ emotional expressions can be dysfunctional for teams.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Diversity initiatives are prevalent, but not necessarily effective. These initiatives at times not only fail to result in the intended consequence of increased diversity and inclusion, but also produce unintended consequences that undermine their effectiveness. In this presentation, Leslie will describe the unintended consequences diversity initiatives can produce and provide examples of how even well-intentioned efforts to foster diversity and inclusion can go astray. She will also discuss strategies for making diversity initiatives more effective and thus better leveraging the positive consequences of diversity for individuals, organizations, and societies.

About Leslie:
Lisa M. Leslie is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Stern School of Business, New York University. She received her AB in Social Psychology from Princeton University and her MA and PhD in Organizational Psychology from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining Stern in 2013, she spent six years as an Assistant Professor at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Leslie’s research focuses on diversity in organizations, and specifically understanding why organizational diversity initiatives often produce unintended consequences and what can be done to make them more effective. She also has secondary research interests in cross-cultural organizational behavior and conflict management. Leslie has received many awards for her research, which has appeared in journals spanning a number of different disciplines, and has served as an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal.

Host:
Lindred Greer, Associate Professor of Management and Organizations

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks University of Michigan Organizational Learning, Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, Lisa and David (MBA ‘87) Drews, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2019-20 Positive Links Speaker Series.

Subtle Social Peril: Incivility and Gender Harassment as Impediments to Diversity and Well-being at Work (November 22, 2019 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68308 68308-17045987@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 22, 2019 1:30pm

The social landscape at work can prove treacherous, especially for employees who have to navigate experiences of incivility and gender harassment. In this talk, I will present a collection of findings from my research program that suggest not only are deviant behaviors costly, but they are also a way in which covert varieties of sexism and racism persist in today’s organizations. Grounded in theories of modern discrimination, I will display data that illuminates a dark side of organizational life: low-level forms of rudeness and mistreatment that are often disregarded as trivial. I suggest that to truly equal the playing field, organizations must root out interpersonal experiences that undermine women’s (and men’s) success and satisfaction. Further, I will present findings on how the process of incivility harm unfolds as a function of individual differences. However, I will also complicate this picture with my recent research that finds an unexpected potential bright-side to uncivil interactions. The goal of my work is to inform academic theory and to encourage workplace interventions that both minimize incivility and gender harassment and help those experiencing these types of stressors.

Today there are more Chinese restaurants in the United States than the combined total of McDonald’s, Burger King’s, Wendy’s, and KFC chains. This talk tells the history of Chinese restaurants against the backdrop of intense racial discrimination and civic exclusion. Chinese immigrants held the unfortunate distinction of being the first—and for many years only—population of voluntary migrants restricted from entering the country and denied a pathway to citizenship. Between the end of Radical Reconstruction and World War II, Chinese immigrants seized political power and shifted their economic, legal, and cultural positions through food. The talks centers on a handful of Chinese immigrants who strategically and purposefully built bridges of understanding with the wider U.S. population, and leveraged this acceptance to negotiate an immense legal apparatus. This is a story of the resilience of racialized immigrants who managed to become tastemakers, despite the weight of state-sanctioned oppression.

Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP for food: https://forms.gle/jMh25aUFXCLbjUyc9

Heather Ruth Lee is an Assistant Professor of History at NYU Shanghai. As a scholar and educator, she wrestles with the importance of legal immigration status—the bright line separating citizens from both documented and undocumented migrants—to the history of race and ethnicity in the United States. Her first book, The Business of Becoming Citizens: Chinese Immigrants, Cuisine, and Restaurants from Exclusion to Inclusion in the United States, 1870-1943 tells the history of Chinese restaurants against the backdrop of intense racial discrimination and civic exclusion. Alongside the book, Professor Lee has been working on the “Chinese Restaurant Database Project” (www.eatingglobally.com), an original data source on historical Chinese business operations, migration strategies and demographic information. Her research has been featured in NPR’s All Things Considered, The Salt, The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, and Gastropod, a podcast on food science and history. Professor Lee has advised and curated exhibitions at the New York Historical Society, the National Museum of American History, the Museum of Chinese in America, and elsewhere.

Financing Technology Commercialization Pitch Competition (December 11, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69961 69961-17489224@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 11, 2019 6:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Ross Faculty Support/ACT

University of Michigan students are putting the final touches on their venture capital investment proposals in anticipation of the upcoming 2019 Financing Technology Commercialization Pitch Competition on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

This year, 20 competitive teams of graduate and undergraduate students in Professor David J. Brophy’s Financing Technology Commercialization practicum will go before a panel of venture capital judges to present their strongest, most-strategic fund-raising pitches for venture capital financing.

The event will take place in the Ross School’s Blau Auditorium. Members and friends of the U-M student, faculty and alumni community are welcome to attend at 6 p.m.

Each student team has been working closely with the founder(s) of a Michigan-based, early-stage startup for the entire semester to help jump-start the company’s growth. A number of the participating startups are University spinouts that are commercializing new technologies and research discoveries.

Over the course of the practicum, the students have assisted these emerging companies in refining business plans and market-entry strategies, accelerating the commercialization of research discoveries and disruptive technologies, and raising venture capital to fund expansion.

To move the needle on startup development, the teams needed to conduct due diligence, calculate valuation, develop financial plans and make key strategic decisions. Seasoned mentors helped the students put their textbook theory into practice.

The high-stakes 2019 Financing Technology Commercialization Pitch Competition represents the culmination of months of hard work and collaboration. Each team stands ready to take on the capstone challenge in hopes of emerging as the top-ranked contestant in the pitch competition.

The practicum’s goal, according to Professor Brophy, is to give emerging, fast-growth companies a fresh set of eyes, minds and hands that can help them progress “the next mile” to raise external equity capital. Students, in turn, benefit from their action-based learning experience, which prepares them to become successful leaders of their own entrepreneurial enterprises in the future.
“In an action-learning setting, this unique course succeeds in teaching students and entrepreneurs, as working partners, how to prepare and position high-potential, emerging growth companies to raise their first (Series A) venture capital, a critical milestone in the company’s growth,” Professor Brophy explains. “Our objective is to help local market companies directly and to prepare U-M students to be fundable founders and venture investors in their own right.”

This year’s panel of seasoned VCs will assess and rank the students’ investor pitches and offer helpful feedback. Judging panelists are drawn from a wide range of Michigan venture capital investors: corporations such as Stryker and DowDuPont, investment partnerships from the Michigan Venture Capital Association, and an array of angel investment groups and high net worth individuals.

Since its inception in 2004, Professor Brophy’s course has provided student-led business-development and capital-raising assistance to 225 early-stage companies, including 75 ventures that have procured their targeted funding. More than 1,300 U-M students have gone through the practicum and become part of the Michigan Ross Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance “Next Mile to Funding” venture capital network.

The exhortation to be true to oneself is often intended to empower, but it can actually promote apprehension because instructions are rarely provided. Thus, many shy away from what is true to self, take on inauthentic behaviors to fit into their work environments, or at worst, turn to harsh transparency, alienating those around them. In this session, Hewlin will share how people can be authentic “on their own terms” by identifying their thresholds of authenticity as well as personal values that can be integrated into the workplace to: increase work engagement, foster positive relationships, and enhance overall personal well-being.

About Hewlin:
Patricia Faison Hewlin is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs, and Associate Professor in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. She is also a visiting professor at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China. Prior to joining academia, she was a Vice President for Citi, where she managed financial centers in New York City.

Hewlin conducts research on how organization members and leaders engage in authentic expression, as well as factors that impede authenticity in the workplace. Her research has primarily centered on employee silence, and the degree to which members suppress personal values and pretend to embrace organizational values, a behavior she terms as “creating facades of conformity.” Her most recent research explores authenticity from a cross-cultural perspective, and how organizations, particularly leaders can leverage diverse and divergent authentic self-expressions among followers, while promoting positive work interactions and productivity.

Hewlin is published in several academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and Journal of Chinese Management. She has also contributed to the Globe and Mail, Huffington Post, Getting Smart, and Harvard Business Review.

On a personal note, Hewlin enjoys traveling, solving puzzles, and quiet moments with her family.

Private Equity "Bake-Off" Competition (December 12, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69963 69963-17489228@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 12, 2019 6:00pm

Nine University of Michigan student teams will square off against each other on Thursday, December 12, during the annual private equity “battle of the pitches,” held by the Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance, or CVP, at the Ross School of Business.
Only two teams will advance to the “Bake-off” semifinals, where they will have a shot at winning this year’s Brophy-Gelband Merit Scholarship and $10,000 in prize money.

The event will be held in the Ross School’s Blau Auditorium, and is open to members and friends of the U-M student, faculty and alumni community at 6 p.m.

The 12th annual Private Equity “Bake-off” competition serves as the capstone event for MBA and U-M graduate students enrolled in Professor David J. Brophy’s Private Equity Finance course.

For this highly anticipated interclass challenge, each student team will present a detailed proposal for a private-equity takeover of an existing public company. A judge’s panel composed of private equity investors and investment practitioners will rank the teams by the quality, comprehensiveness and attractiveness (in terms of projected return on investment) of their public-to-private buyout pitches. Then the judges will narrow the competitive field to two semi-finalists.

During the “Bake-off,” the Blau Colloquium audience of students, alumni and sponsors will cast popular votes for the semifinalist team with the best buyout pitch. The winner will receive the Brophy-Gelband Merit Scholarship and take home $7,500 in prize money. The runner-up will receive $2,500.

“Alan Gelband, an alum and great friend of U-M Ross, joins us in facilitating student access to opportunities in the private equity and alternative investment field,” Professor Brophy says. “Graduates of this and other Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance (CVP) courses and competitions are now private equity fund leaders globally and providing continued support for our programs and conferences.”

At the beginning of the fall term, Professor Brophy assigned the student teams to select and evaluate a middle-market public company for a possible “model” private-equity acquisition. The students used publicly available financial records to assess the company’s management, revenue, profits and market position, and subsequently to project the estimated return on investment for private equity investors. Based on this extensive information gathering and financial analysis, each team formulated a buyout pitch for the target company it had chosen.

Alan Gelband, BBA ’65, MBA ’67, the benefactor for the annual Bake-off award, says the public-to-private buyout competition serves both as a learning tool for students and a talent pipeline for the PE industry.
“This is an important exercise for anyone who wants to get into private equity, which is a leader of business evolution today,” says Gelband, the founder and managing director at Gelband & Co. investment banking.

Other Ross and CVP alumni and regional private equity investors who volunteer as judges also play a formative role during the annual Bake-off competition by providing constructive feedback on the teams’ buyout pitches and suggesting ways to strengthen their written and oral presentations. This year’s roster of judges includes investors from regional and national private equity firms.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
The field of Positive Organizational Scholarship asks what people, groups, and organizations are like when at their very best. Researchers in the field scientifically examine the best of the human condition. This means researchers use science to learn from excellence. For 18 years, Quinn has been teaching executives how to understand and apply these accumulating scientific findings. In the process, he has become increasingly aware that in the world of practice, like the world of science, most people do not attend to or learn from excellence. They learn from failure while seeking to reproduce order. In this participative session, Quinn will explore three questions:
1. What does it mean to learn from excellence?
2. How does learning from excellence alter leadership and culture?
3. What can we do to learn from and create social excellence?

About Quinn:
Robert E. Quinn is the Margaret Elliot Tracy Collegiate Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. His research and writing focus on purpose, leadership, culture, and change. He is one of the co-founders of the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship and a co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations.

In terms of research, he is in the top 1% of professors cited in organizational behavior textbooks. He has published 18 books. As a teacher, Quinn is the recipient of multiple awards. In a recent global survey, he was named one of the top speakers in the world on the topic of organizational culture and related issues. Last year, his talk on personal purpose went viral on Facebook and has been viewed over 16 million times.

Despite the historical tension between social and economic goals, contemporary US firms routinely depict such aims as synergistic. Analyzing 300 annual reports from a sample of 80 large US public firms between 1960 and 2010, we examine the rise of “win-win” conceptions of social and economic value, which include both the social benefits of economic activities and economic gains from social responsibility. Our findings support arguments that win-win

ideology is a culturally contingent rhetoric tied to the emergence of a neoliberal socio-economic context. Macro-level indicators of firms’ changing institutional context including financialization of the economy, rationalization of the social sphere, and the rise of voluntary regulation schemes such as ratings and rankings, are associated with the rise of win-win rhetoric. The general socioeconomic influence is mediated by firm-level attention to its environment, which is reflected in mentions of external evaluations in annual reports. The study contributes to institutional theories of the historical development of corporate responsibility and to understanding heterogeneous organizational responses to macro-level institutional change

How are Ross faculty members advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals through business research? Each month, Business+Impact hosts an interactive design micro-charette themed around one of these goals. During the month of January, we will address Goal 3: Good Health & Well-Being.  Several award-winning Ross faculty members (to be announced) will share their research in an informal setting, and students will have the opportunity to brainstorm possible next steps for how the research can be applied to real-world applications that make a positive impact.

This limited-size two-hour workshop will feature:

Faculty presentations on key research insights.
Discussion
Design micro-charrette using specific design tools for problem identification

Due to high interest in these workshops, we must cap attendance at 25. We aim to keep the numbers of participants at a size that can accommodate the space capacity of the +Impact Studio and provide meaningful group discussion.

The cost of doing business in China today is a high one, and it is paid by any and every company that comes looking to tap into its markets or leverage its workforce. Quite simply, you don’t get to do business in China today without doing exactly what the Chinese government wants you to do. Period. No one is immune. No one. As someone who has lived and worked in China, advised companies about investing there, and quite happily been described as a China bull, I have struggled to accept this fateful conclusion in the era of Xi Jinping. Like some other China Bulls, I had believed the early promises of Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Zhu Rongji about China’s fair and open future, open markets, the emergence of a rule of law system. To be clear, I am still very bullish on the strength and trajectory of the Chinese economy – China *will* continue to grow and it *will* surpass the US as the largest economy in the world. However, the current era is just a much darker period for everyone, including Multinational Corporations (MNCs). There is no free lunch for doing business in Xi's China – especially for technology companies. China *will* get its pound of flesh as the cost of operating there: you get to operate here and gain access to the the most innovative supply chain in the world and world's largest marketplace; and China gets what it wants in terms of benefits to Chinese economy and society (as defined by the Chinese Government). Based on three decades of China research — including thousands of interviews — and, most recently, my time as an executive for Apple in China (2014-19), this talk attempts to lay out what my views on how China has co-opted the business community in the era of Xi Jinping.

Chinese Co - optation: Doing Business in the Era of Xi Jinping (February 14, 2020 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70712 70712-17619588@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 14, 2020 1:30pm
