Healthcare delivery in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is influenced by many factors, such as provider expertise, patient trust, access, financing, policies and evolving technology. This virtual public session will also serve as the opening discussion of a course with the same name (BA620) offered in the second half of the Fall semester.

For questions about the roundtable discussion or the course, please contact Ekta Jhaveri at ekta@umich.edu

Panelists include:

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

Globalization isn’t dead, but it increasingly has to do more with trading ideas and services than with moving metal containers stuffed with manufactured goods. This talk will discuss how globalization is changing and why.
Marc Levinson is an independent historian, economist, and journalist whose career has centered on making complex economic issues understandable to the general public. Marc spent many years as an economic journalist, including a turn as finance and economics editor of The Economist in London. Returning to New York, he worked as an economist for J.P. Morgan Chase, developing a unique industry economics function and then initiating the bank’s environmental research for stock and bond investors. He later served as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. His books include the business classic The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger; The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America, which won wide praise from across the political spectrum for exploring the tension between capitalism and competition in the U.S. economy; and An Extraordinary Time, showing how the sudden end of the postwar boom in the early 1970s led voters in many countries to turn away from activist government in favor of free-market ideas. He will be speaking about his latest book, Outside the Box, a lively history of globalization and its consequences.

LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: "Designing Online Platforms for Offline Services in China: A Market-Frictions Based Perspective" (December 1, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76169 76169-19671600@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, December 1, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar.

Using market-frictions based logic, Dr. Wu and his co-author/researcher on this project, develop an analytical model that examines how online platforms can govern opportunistic behavior of offline service providers in China, thus allowing market forces to promote the general welfare. Their work sheds new light on how platform design can help reduce market frictions in economic exchanges and potentially shape the evolution of industries.

Xun (Brian) Wu is an Associate Professor of Strategy (with tenure), Michael R. and Mary Kay Hallman Fellow, and faculty director of China Initiatives at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He received his BS from Tsinghua University in China, MSc from National University of Singapore, and PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

His research examines the dynamics of corporate scope and the evolution of industries. His research has been published or is forthcoming in top scholarly journals including "Management Science," "Organization Science," and "Strategic Management Journal." He serves as an Associate Editor for "Strategic Management Journal."

Organized By: Michigan Ross Center for Positive Organizations

Wednesday, December 2, 2020
5:00-6:30 p.m. ET
Via Zoom (login information will be sent upon registration)
Limited to 150 undergrad/graduate students, U-M students only

The Tools for Thriving Workshop Series, created from the research excellence of Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, will help students build thriving lives, teams, and organizations. Students will engage with Ross thought leaders and with world-renowned tools, created by Ross faculty, to deepen their self-awareness and ability to resource others.

How do you unleash generosity and get the resources you need in any team or organization? In this workshop, Wayne Baker will provide proven tools that will help you and your teams accelerate the flow of resources and build a culture of generosity.

Drawing on his new book, All You Have To Do Is Ask, Baker will show you how to find what you need, and ask for it in ways that work. The workshop will give you access to real-time tools that support a culture of generosity, including a digital assessment, learning map, and access to a generosity community knowledge and resource sharing platform called Givitas. You will leave with a new appreciation of the power of how to ask for what you need in ways that transform what’s available for your success.

Tools for Futurist Thinking in the Social Sector with Deloitte’s Monitor Institute (February 3, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81412 81412-20893776@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 3:30pm

Organized By: Business+Impact at Michigan Ross

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment of hyper-uncertainty for social sector organizations, as the economic crisis has weakened funders and nonprofits even as the demand for their assistance is skyrocketing. Many funders and non-profits have completed their initial round of emergency response to the crisis, but they are struggling to contemplate what they should do next.
To help social sector leaders confront this challenge, the Monitor Institute by Deloitte is using the tools of scenario planning—the well-tested methodology for thinking about the future pioneered by Deloitte’s Global Business Network group—to help both funders and operating nonprofits get on their front foot in preparing for the landscape on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, this session will provide funders and operating non-profits with an understanding of the tools that can help them think about the critical uncertainties of the moment, reckon with the new “certainties” emerging from the pandemic, and think about how their strategies might (or might not) fit the different possible futures that may emerge in the coming months and years ahead.

The LSA Student Honor Council would like to invite you to a speaker event on February 15th: “The Moral Maze of Business” presented by Professor Lloyd Sandelands of the Ross School of Business!

He will speak on “how two manifestations of our human brokenness--our susceptibility to dominance and our tendency to narcissism--are set loose in business and wreak havoc in business life." Professor Sandelands will discuss how these two dynamics appear not only in business but in all human interactions. For any accommodation requests or questions, please email lsahcexec@umich.edu.

We hope to see you there!

How did China’s mass manufacturing and “copycat” production become transformed, in the global tech imagination, from something holding the nation back to one of its key assets? This talk, based on Professor Lindtner’s most recent publication "Prototype Nation" (Princeton University Press, 2020), offers a rich transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. With historical precision and ethnographic detail, Professor Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–08, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation.

Silvia Lindtner is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information. She researches, writes and teaches about DIY (do-it-yourself) maker culture, with a particular focus on its intersections with manufacturing and industry development in China. Drawing on her background in interaction design and media studies, she merges ethnographic methods with approaches in design and making. This allows her to provide deep insights into emerging cultures of technology production and use, from a sociological and technological perspective.

Together with Anna Greenspan (NYU SH) and David Li (XinCheJian), Silvia Lindtner is also the co-founder of the Research Initiative Hacked Matter. Hacked Matter. It has, since its inception in 2011, organized a series of workshops, lectures, public panel discussions as well as hands-on engagements with questions of DIY making, manufacturing, and innovation ecosystems.

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students:
$500 for U-M alumni or public
$400 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$200 for Tauber Institute students

Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for May 12, 2021 (11:00 am) virtually. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Since 2013, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

$400 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$200 for Tauber Institute students

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

STS Speaker. A Conversation on Prototype Nation (March 22, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81191 81191-20871997@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 22, 2021 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Science, Technology & Society

How did China’s mass manufacturing and “copycat” production transform, in the global tech imagination, from something holding the nation back to a key asset? Prototype Nation offers a rich transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. With historical precision and ethnographic detail, Silvia Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–08, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation. Lindtner’s investigations draw on more than a decade of research in experimental work spaces—makerspaces, coworking spaces, innovation hubs, hackathons, and startup weekends—in China, the United States, Africa, Europe, Taiwan, and Singapore, as well as in key sites of technology investment and industrial production—tech incubators, corporate offices, and factories. She examines how the ideals of the maker movement, to intervene in social and economic structures, served the technopolitical project of prototyping a “new” optimistic, assertive, and global China. In doing so, Lindtner demonstrates that entrepreneurial living influences governance, education, policy, investment, and urban redesign in ways that normalize the endurance of sexism, racism, colonialism, and labor exploitation. Prototype Nation shows that by attending to the bodies and sites that nurture entrepreneurial life, technology can be extricated from the seemingly endless cycle of promise and violence.

Over the past five years, less than 3% of venture capital funding went to Black and Latinx founders. What are the barriers to entrepreneurship for minorities and how can venture capital become more inclusive to entrepreneurs? What steps should be taken by operators and financiers to ensure that sufficient funding is accessible to businesses in these communities? Big Business and Political Power: The Benefits of Fragmentation (March 26, 2021 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83125 83125-21274903@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 26, 2021 1:30pm

Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Abstract:

It is broadly accepted among political scientists, political sociologists, and social movement theorists that a unified group will have a higher probability of success than a group that experiences internal divisions or fragmentation. Similarly, it has been assumed that in a society with a relatively unified elite, the elite will experience disproportionately high benefits relative to the larger population. I take issue with this claim. In the mid-twentieth century, large American corporations exhibited a relatively high level of unity but the relative economic benefits accruing to the elite were at historic lows. In more recent years, American big business has become increasingly fragmented, yet the economic benefits that these elites have received have reached historic highs, and the average American’s standard of living has stagnated. Drawing on Padgett and Ansell, I introduce the concept of inadvertent robust action to explain how a relatively fragmented, disorganized elite can reap benefits that exceed those that its more unified counterparts experienced in an earlier era.

How has this unprecedented time of disruption affected leaders and employees? How are they engaging in their work, and with each other? Although the current climate has posed many challenges, it also leaves room to reengage and reimagine organizational strategies. Companies have the opportunity to adopt creative and more agile work methods; renew discussions surrounding DEI; implement a stronger commitment to racial justice; and improve employee engagement. Leaders have the potential to create supportive structures, practices, and cultures that foster connection, while employees have the potential to self-discover and drive a mindful and meaningful connection to their work. All can act in harmony to connect with an organization’s purpose-driven mission.

Join us for the virtual Michigan Ross Positive Business Conference, May 13-14, 2021, where we’ll share new practices, tools, and real-world examples for how to build stronger, more connected teams and companies. Leading faculty and industry experts from Cisco, IDEO, Masco, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and more, will explore this year’s theme of “Meaningful Engagement in a Fragmented Time: Connecting with Self, Others, and Society.”
