U-M doctoral students Amanda Healy, Jallicia Jolly, and Megan Berkobien will talk about their experiences at the HWW pre-doctoral summer workshop and answer questions from prospective applicants.

About the Predoctoral Summer Workshop: A three-week intensive, residential summer workshop for individuals who are working towards but have not yet received a PhD in a humanities discipline, and who plan to continue their degree programs while also considering careers outside the academy and/or the tenure-track university system. The summer workshop will instruct students in the various ways they can leverage their pre-existing and developing skill sets towards the pursuit of careers in the public humanities and the private sector. Familiarity with the vital connections between academic and public worlds can also enrich traditional scholarly endeavors. Guest speakers will make daily presentations to workshop fellows. Field trips to relevant sites will supplement the instruction that takes place in the workshop.

Humanities Without Walls is a consortium of humanities centers and institutes at 15 major research universities throughout the Midwest and beyond. Based at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the consortium is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This workshop is organized by, and presented in partnership with, the Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF). Guided by one of the leading public humanities organizations in the nation, it encourages humanities doctoral students to think of themselves as agents of the public humanities and showcase opportunities beyond the walls of the academy in an uncertain academic job climate.

DRW On-Campus Information Session, in collaboration with GEECS (September 18, 2017 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44720 44720-9969000@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 18, 2017 6:00pm
Location: Herbert H. Dow Building
Organized By: Michigan Engineering

DRW, a leading trading and technology company in Chicago, in collaboration with GEECS, will be co-hosting an on-campus information session featuring Kelley Fernandez, a financial application support engineer at DRW. Kelley’s session will discuss a woman’s ability to both lead and contribute in vital programming, trading, and quantitative roles.

Kelley’s path to the trading world is unconventional and can serve as motivation to young women who are interested in such a career but don’t know where they’d fit in. Graduating from college with a political science degree, Kelley was introduced to the industry when she met someone from Toji Trading Group and had the opportunity to start out as a liaison between traders and developers. She began developing programs complementary to the trading systems, and eventually started leading the support of all the firm’s trading systems. Today, she carries on this very same role at DRW — one she never thought she’d have.

There is a common misconception that you have to be a quant developer working directly on a trading system to survive in trading. However, there are many other roles that build incredible and complex technology, both within trading systems — like Kelley’s role, which involves working within different parts of the systems — and outside them, in risk, infrastructure, etc.

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Department of Defense are the principal agencies responsible for the country’s stockpile, and lead various efforts in high-energy-density (HED), plasma, and predictive sciences. Stockpile modernization is critical to the NNSA/DOD joint mission and involves diverse members, including the Nuclear Weapons Council (NNSA, Policy, Joint Staff, US STRATCOM) the Navy and Air Force, the national laboratories, intelligence agencies, and Congress. These organizations make significant efforts to recruit and develop early-career professionals across the country and prepare tomorrow’s leaders in areas encompassing HED and plasma sciences, nonproliferation, and policy. More, these organizations partner with various academic institutes supporting NNSA and DOD programs to prepare the next generation of leaders in nuclear security. NNSA fellowships are great opportunities for early-career and mid-level professionals interested in such fields. These and related topics will be discussed.

Have you ever wondered how companies make strategic decisions, get the inside scoop on their competitors, and figure out exactly what their customers want? Have you ever wondered about all that, but been especially curious about how aerospace & defense companies do it?

Answer those questions - and a few others, too - with CREES MA '15 alum and current Avascent Senior Analyst Eoin Power. Using real examples from work Avascent has done in the world of VIP aircraft interiors (think custom-molded toilets, missile defense systems, in-flight access to new Hollywood blockbusters), you'll walk through the typical stages of a strategy consulting project, and see how a project team structures problems, builds models, and develops recommendations.

Avascent is the leading strategy and management consulting firm serving clients operating in aerospace, defense, and other government-driven markets. Working with corporate leaders, financial investors, and government agencies, Avascent delivers solutions in the areas of strategic growth, value capture, mergers and acquisition support, and defense-industrial policy.

We'll also provide tips for making the most of your experience, whatever you decide to pursue! Learn to fully engage in your experience and practice career readiness skills (communication, teamwork, problem solving, etc.) that employers value most when evaluating candidates. College of Engineering students!

Are you interested in Science, Technology, and Engineering internships in Washington, DC? Want to expand your personal and professional network, build additional skills and strengths, and learn about how industry and government influence one another? Apply for the Michigan in Washington semester program!

Michigan in Washington and Public Service Internship Program information session
College of Engineering
Monday, January 29th, 5-6pm
265 Chrysler Center
RSVP here: https://goo.gl/forms/CALrkIOkM6HHr3Gu2

MiW has scholarships available! Come learn about this excellent opportunity. Open to domestic and international students, of all class years. See the attached document for potential internship opportunities.

This information session will also include representatives from the Public Service Internship Program. The University of Michigan Career Center's Public Service Intern Program (PSIP) prepares undergraduate students to obtain summer internships in Washington DC, educates them to build career development skills, and supports participants while living in our nation's capitol. This is the oldest and largest intern program in the country and just had a successful 48th summer in Washington, DC.

Quotes from former College of Engineering participants in the MiW program:
"A lot of the progress in additive manufacturing has been the result of joint efforts between government, industry, and education. I identified this area as my top interest in my application for the White House Internship Program; however, I actually ended up being placed in an area more aligned with other interests I had also listed, e.g., advocacy for women’s empowerment and STEM."
"I think MIW is very relevant – every career somehow either interacts with or is impacted by government... The breadth of topics that can be studied through the MIW program is very large – there really is something for everyone! The program can be personalized through one’s choice of internship, classes, and research project. And it’s worth noting that the classes frequently are taught by people who are experts in their respective fields."
I hope to see you at the information session!

Sincerely,
Rachel Armstrong

In career services, there is a saying: the resume gets you the interview, and the interview gets you the job. Developing excellent interview skills is essential to conducting a successful job search. This workshop will provide an overview of several different types of interviews and how to best prepare for each, including behavioral, technical, case, and phone/Skype interviews. We will review strategies for answering interview questions, such as the STAR format, and discuss what to emphasize when answering interview questions. Preparing for common interview questions is only one part of the process - learn what to wear and bring to an interview and how to follow up with an employer after the interview. Come learn how to ace the interview!

This is a College of Engineering event.

Visa Inc. Company Day (January 31, 2018 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48284 48284-11194142@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, January 31, 2018 10:00am
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Engineering Career Resource Center

The ECRC is hosting a Company Day for Visa Inc. on Wednesday, January 31, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the Duderstadt Connector.

Imagine working for one of the pioneers in the payment technology space. The kind of company that's been setting the bar for the way people pay and get paid for more than 50 years, and continues to innovate on a global scale. Now imagine that company is less than 10,000 employees worldwide, small enough that you'll actually have an impact and do some amazing things. Sounds pretty awesome. Well, that company exists and it's Visa.

Yep, Visa.

Imagine, in a single day, the diversity of transactions that Visa manages – from gaming enthusiasts who buy virtual goods to advance a level, to a small business merchant launching their first ecommerce business to a large consumer brand hitting their largest single-day sale. Now multiply transactions and interactions like that by millions on a global scale – that's Visa. It is a multi-billion dollar market that has experienced year over year growth!

Behind the next generation of digital payment innovation and global financial inclusion are the future leaders developed in the Visa Internship Program. Your intensive 10-12 week summer will challenge and inspire you through meaningful work, executive exposure, out of the box problem solving, social events and community service.

While our social and professional identities often intersect, it's important to create appropriate boundaries between them, and to maintain a professional presence that helps bring attention to your work, connect you to new collaborators, and craft a reputation in your field. This hands-on workshop will teach the basics about maintaining one's professional presence online, including social media use, options for portfolio sites, privacy implications, and more.

This workshop can assist students with exploring and maintaining an ePortfolio platform toward Requirement ‘J’ of the Graduate Teacher Plus Certificate in Digital Media (GTC+) program.

The event format includes a student panel and small group discussions to allow you to gain insight into a variety of options (summer jobs, internships, research, volunteering, etc.) and see that it’s not really so much about what you choose to do, but what you make of the experience.

All undergrad engineering students welcome, but the event is focused toward students with limited prior experience.

The 2018 U-M Management Conference provides a forum for the university’s managers, at all levels, to learn best practices, hone managerial skills and increase self-knowledge. It includes a keynote, breakouts and a panel session.

Keynote Speaker:
Jacob Morgan

Keynote:
The Future of Work is all About Employee Experience

We invest a great deal of time and money to improve employee engagement, yet our efforts often seem to miss the mark. How can that be? Jacob Morgan, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the future of work and employee engagement, uses his ongoing research of 252 organizations to show how short term “adrenaline shot” programs such as job sharing or working from home, aren’t necessarily the answer. He will demonstrate how the world’s top organizations are redesigning work around their people by focusing on three environments: culture, technology, and the physical workspace. He will share why employee experience is the next big area of investment, what the top organizations are doing, and how you can go about creating an Experiential Organization.
