Join us in the Science Forum for 15-20 minute engaging science demonstrations that will help you see the world around you in a whole new way. Demonstrations are appropriate for visitors ages 5 and above.

The human body is made of more than 37 trillion cells. Most of them need to be replaced every couple of months, weeks, or sometimes in the course of only a few days. Our cells grow and divide constantly to get this massive job done. But how do cells replicate themselves? How do things move in, out, and around the cell, and into new cells? Join us as we explore how our bodies carry out this massive process. We will learn about cell structure and division and observe cells up-close and in action! Funded by the National Science Foundation.

Family Art Studio: Prints in Action (November 9, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/65667 65667-16629876@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, November 9, 2019 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Families with children ages six and up are invited to look, learn, and create together in this hands-on workshop inspired by Meleko Mokgosi's new commission at UMMA, Pan-African Pulp. Mokgosi’s work, inspired by African photo novels of the 1960s and 70s, transforms images of people and their surroundings into larger-than-life panels. Guided by local artist Sajeev Vadakoottu, participants will transfer, compose, and transform their own images (please bring your phones!) to create a relief print, acting as characters in scenes of their own making.    This workshop will give a basic introduction to the block printing (a relief printmaking technique). Block printing refers to a technique where images are transferred from paper to the raised portion of a carved or etched block. In this technique, drawings are made on a foam sheet or soft kut block and the negative space is carved out from the desired areas. In the next stage, ink is applied on the surface using a roller. Finally, prints are taken using a manual spooning technique, which applies pressure to the ink and paper transfers the image to paper.

Parents must accompany children.

Please note:

Relief printmaking requires sharp tools to carve the cut block. In traditional relief printmaking, sharp tools are used to carve the cut block. This technique requires close parental supervision and is best suited for children ages 8 and above.

For families that prefer to avoid the use of sharp tools, alternate materials will be available. We cannot guarantee your spot if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.   Parents must accompany children. We cannot guarantee your spot if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.

Family Art Studio is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.

“In the ancient city of Neba there stood a temple, and in the temple lived a cat. But the cat did not just live there. The cat was the lord of the temple.”

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Egyptian exhibits at the Kelsey Museum! We begin by reading aloud "Temple Cat," by Andrew Clements. Then we explore the galleries to find artifacts pictured in the book like hieroglyphs, jewelry, clothes, and our cat mummy. During the tour, replica artifacts will be available for kids to touch and learn from. Take home a scavenger hunt of other animals in the Kelsey Museum! This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

It's that time of year again to register for Aerospace Day! For those of you who haven't heard about it:

The November biannual Aerospace Day will be held at the University of Michigan in the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building (1320 Beal Ave., Ann Arbor, MI) and will take place on Saturday, November 23rd from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Also, this event is free!

The U-M Student Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the U-M Department of Aerospace Engineering will be sponsoring:
● An exciting display of Michigan aerospace engineering students' class projects, featuring remote-controlled blimp and hovercraft races
● Fun STEM activities for K-12 students coordinated by our student project teams
● A separate blimp-building activity for high school students
● Tours of the Michigan aerospace engineering department labs and Wilson Student Team Project Center
● Mini rockets
● Opportunity to learn more about STEM and aerospace engineering
● Breakfast and lunch for all parents and participants (at no cost!)

There are multiple activities that cater to different age groups from K-12 so all students are welcome to sign up! Younger students (elementary/middle school) can participate in various fun STEM activities designed by our project teams. For high school students, we are pleased to offer a separate activity for the day: a mini-project on blimp-building and design. Students will also have the option of touring the aerospace engineering department instead of participating in the activities.

Registration is currently closed.

Please contact us if you have any questions, and we hope to see you at Aerospace Day in November! Once you have signed up additional information will follow.

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Egyptian exhibits at the Kelsey Museum! We begin by reading aloud "In Egyptian Times," by Kate Davies and Alfredo Belli. Then we explore the galleries to find artifacts pictured in the book, like a miniature boat, desk and pens, sandals, painted hieroglyphs, real ancient food, and Egyptian jewelry. During the tour, replica artifacts will be available for kids to touch and learn from. Take home a scavenger hunt, Egyptian hieroglyphs ID sheet, and senet game board for further discovery! This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–7. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

“A Winter Dweller’s Celebration” is reminiscent of the French fur-trading days of Old Michigan, when the hardy voyageurs wintered in settlements telling stories, singing songs, and dancing. Bring a smile, hoot and holler, or just clap along. There’s something for everyone … and don’t forget yer dancin’ shoes!

Genot “Winter Elk” Picor has performed throughout Michigan from Bedford to Ironwood and from Niles to Sault Ste. Marie as a storyteller, musician, and folklorist. He is a listed performer in the Touring Directory of the Michigan Arts and Humanities Council.

This event is free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please call the Kelsey at 734-647-4167 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Families with children ages six and up are invited to look, learn, and create together in this hands-on workshop inspired by UMMA's second exhibition of Inuit Art, Reflections: An Ordinary Day. Guided by local artist Sajeev Vadakoottu, participants will make a drawing of an image from their own imagination directly on a screen, essentially creating a stencil, and use that stencil to make prints on paper, bags or t-shirts. (Please bring your own canvas bags or t-shirts!)

Please note: Adults must accompany children. We cannot guarantee your spot if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.

Please also note: there will be video recording at this event. If you do not wish to participate, talk with an UMMA staff member on-site.

This exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

Family Art Studio is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.

Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Egyptian exhibits at the Kelsey Museum! We begin by reading aloud "Tickle Tut's Toes," by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo.

As one of America’s most performed composers, David Lang has “solidified his standing as an American master,” as The New Yorker puts it. His catalog of work is extensive, and his opera, orchestra, chamber, and solo works are by turns ominous, ethereal, urgent, hypnotic, unsettling, and emotionally direct. In 2008, the New York-based composer was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion, a score for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers, based on the children’s story by Hans Christian Andersen. Additionally, Lang’s score for Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, among others. Other recent work includes man made, a concerto co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony; the loser, an opera based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard, which opened the 2016 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; and prisoner of the state, an opera co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, De Doelen concert hall in the Netherlands, the Barbican Centre in London, l’Auditori concert hall in Barcelona, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Germany, the Concertgebouw in Belgium, and Malmö Opera in Sweden. Lang is co-founder and co-artistic director of Bang on a Can, a New York-based organization dedicated to the support of experimental music.

David Lang’s appearance is courtesy of the William Bolcom Guest Residency at the U-M School of Music, Theater, and Dance, with additional support from the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

Family Art Studio: Community Creations (March 7, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70544 70544-17604937@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, March 7, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Families with children ages six and up are invited to look, learn, and create together in this hands-on workshop inspired by the UMMA exhibition Cullen Washington, Jr.: The Public Square.  Visit the exhibition—the compositions are soaring monumental collages exploring the idea of the public square as the heart of the artistic, spiritual, and political life of the city —and create an original art work. Led by local artist and long-time UMMA docent Susan Clinthorne.

Parents must accompany children. We cannot guarantee your spot if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, Candy and Michael Barasch, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of History of Art, School of Education, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, School of Social Work, and Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

Family Art Studio is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.
