Emily Atkinson, Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the Weinberg Institute of Cognitive Science, will speak on "Learning to process sentences: Insights from filler-gap dependencies & syntactic priming."

Abstract

The development of the sentence processing mechanisms has largely been ignored because a major assumption of many in the field is that basic sentence processing mechanisms are innate. Seminal work on children’s processing of garden path sentences supported this claim by demonstrating that children – like adults – incrementally interpret sentences, but struggle with reanalysis. However, more recent research has begun to provide counter evidence to this claim by examining new structures. If these mechanisms are not innate, how do children learn to process sentences like adults? I will address these issues by providing evidence that these long held beliefs about children’s sentence processing do not hold in all cases, using the processing of filler-gap dependencies as the main example, and to discuss the possibility that syntactic priming may serve as a possible learning mechanism for adult-like processing behaviors.

Jonathan Morrow, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, will present "Measurement of Individual Differences in Cue-Motivated Behavior" at this week's Cognitive Science Seminar Series.

ABSTRACT

Sign-tracking is a form of Pavlovian conditioned approach to reward-associated cues. Sign-tracking is often contrasted with goal-tracking, which is cue-triggered approach directed toward the location of reward delivery. Interest in sign-tracking has increased in recent years because individual variation in sign-tracking has been shown to predict addiction-like behaviors in animals. Though sign-tracking has been observed in a wide variety of species, including rodents, primates, fish, cephalopods, and insects, there have been very few attempts to document sign-tracking in humans. We directly translated a rat task for human subjects, using a retractable lever as a conditioned stimulus that predicts reward delivery into a different physical location (reward magazine). Physical contacts as well as eye-gaze directed toward the lever or magazine were recorded as outcome measures. Subjects also completed questionnaire-based measurements of trait impulsivity. We hope to demonstrate that sign- and goal-tracking behavior can be measured in humans. Furthermore, we will test whether inter-individual variation in sign- and goal-tracking behavior correlates with motor impulsivity, which is a known risk factor for addiction.

Dr. Mara Bollard, Assistant Director of the Weinberg Institute, will present "In defense of distinctively moral anger."

ABSTRACT

Anger is thought by many philosophers to be central to morality. Anger often occurs as a response to wrongdoing and seems to play an important role in the blaming and punishing of wrongdoers. As such, it’s neither uncommon nor surprising for anger to be referred to as a moral emotion, though what precisely is meant by the term “moral anger” is not always clear: does generic, garden variety anger, which is likely familiar to us from computer malfunctions or heavy traffic, also show up in the moral domain, perhaps as a morally appropriate, fitting, or epistemically reliable response to (certain features of) wrongdoing? Or is there a distinctive psychological state of moral anger that is differentiable from generic anger, and from other emotion types? I defend the claim that there is a distinctively moral kind of anger. I argue that moral anger counts as distinctively moral primarily in virtue of its action tendencies, which are typically triggered by perceived injustice against oneself or others and aim to satisfy two moral goals: a communicative goal, and a retributive goal.

Graduate student Stella Hao (Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience) will give a talk on "Bounded Rationality of Moral Cognition."

ABSTRACT

My work investigates moral cognition (i.e., moral decisions, moral judgments, and moral inferences, Yu, Siegel, \& Crockett, 2011) in the framework of bounded rationality. Moral cognition is not only a reflection of personal values and a gateway for explaining human behaviors, but also a field of work that provides insights relevant to the dynamics of human society and the development of artificial intelligence. Thus, it is extremely important to bridge the gap between morality and human rationality while taking into account the ecology of the environment and the agent. Bounded rationality provides a way to approach decision making research by taking into account how rationality is constrained by the characteristics of the environment and the cognitive limitation of the mind. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the current research on bounded moral cognition and present some empirical results of finding context effects in ethical decision making. Finally, I will present some research goals of my dissertation work.

ABSTRACT

Meaning and Metaphor

Words typically convey a rich and varied array of related meanings. A common way that word meaning is extended is via conceptual metaphors. For instance, we can talk about experiences as if they were food (a bitter pill; a treat). Such metaphorically extended words and phrases are regularly used even when literal paraphrases exist, which raises the question as to why metaphorical language is so common. fMRI work has found that literal meanings remain active even when words are used metaphorically, which may imply that metaphorical uses of words have richer semantic representations. Moreover, recent work has found that metaphorical statements and short stories activate the amygdala more than carefully matched literal paraphrases, indicating that conceptual metaphors are more engaging than their literal counterparts.

*The work to be presented was done in collaboration with Francesca Citron of Lancaster University.

Psychology PhD student Lauren Grant will present "Task sets serve as boundaries for the congruency sequence effect."

ABSTRACT

Cognitive control processes that enable purposeful behavior are often context-specific. A teenager, for example, may inhibit the tendency to daydream at work but not in the classroom. However, the nature of contextual boundaries for cognitive control processes remains unclear. We therefore revisited an ongoing controversy over whether such boundaries reflect (1) an attentional reset that occurs whenever a context-defining (e.g., sensory) feature changes or (2) a disruption of episodic memory retrieval that occurs only when the updated context-defining feature is linked to a different task set. To distinguish between these hypotheses, we employed a cross-modal distractor-interference task to determine precisely when changing a salient context-defining feature – the sensory modality in which task stimuli appear – bounds control processes underlying the congruency sequence effect (CSE). Consistent with the task set hypothesis, but not with the attentional reset hypothesis, Experiments 1 and 2 revealed that changing the sensory modality in which task stimuli appear eliminates the CSE only when the task structure enables participants to form modality-specific task sets. Experiment 3 further revealed that such “modality-specific” CSEs are associated with orienting attention to the sensory modality in which task stimuli appear, which may facilitate the formation of a modality-specific task set. These findings support the view that task sets serve as boundaries for the CSE.

Professor Alexandra Rosati will be giving a talk on "Evolving the Human Mind: What Our Primate Cousins Reveal about Human Cognition."

Why do humans exhibit flexible, intelligent behavior? Comparative studies of primates, our closest relatives, can help us understand the evolutionary origins of complex human cognition. I will present research examining how other primates like chimpanzees think about the world to address three main questions: how do other animals solve ecological problems like finding food, how do they solve social problems like finding friends, and how do their abilities change and develop over their lifetime? By integrating cognitive science with evolutionary theory, we can understand humans in the context of the natural world.

This talk explores distinctions and relationships between consciousness and cognition through the lens of an emergent worldview called Integral Theory (IT), with insights from artistic creativity guiding the inquiry. Drawing widely from disciplines across the sciences and humanities as well as age-old spiritual wisdom, IT posits a remarkably expansive vision of human nature and developmental potential—at the core of which is consciousness development. From an IT vantage point, cognition has to do with the activity of the mind, Put another way, cognition is to consciousness as the wave is to the ocean. Artistic creativity, particularly as it manifests in improvised music, can be seen as a bridge between the two realms and helps illuminate them as part of an overarching wholeness of subjective experience. The arts-consciousness relationship also helps us move past conventional boundaries and labels when it comes to academic disciplines, with longstanding tensions between science and spirituality/mysticism a common, and unnecessary, casualty of such boundaries.

Attitudes of family members, for example, tend to be more similar than those of a random sample of the same size. In the fields of social psychology and political science, the historically standard explanation for these attitude distribution patterns was that social and political attitudes are (at least partially) a function of environmental factors like parental socialization and prevailing social norms. This received view is, however, complicated by more recent work in behavioral genetics, which consistently and repeatedly demonstrates that certain ethical and political attitudes dealing with issues like censorship, abortion, capital punishment, and immigration policy have a significant heritability coefficient, to wit, a substantial percentage of attitude variance in a population can be attributed to genetic variance, independent of environmental factors. In this paper, I argue that the genetic influence on our ethical and political attitudes is mediated by what we can agree—without relying on any first-order ethical or political claims—to be irrelevant and distorting factors that can lead moral reasoning astray. Further, I argue that we should significantly lower our credences in ethical and political attitudes that fall within the domains of belief that involve significant genetic influence.

Organized By: Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science

Students and faculty are invited to attend the 10th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, 2020, at the U-M Michigan League.

Hosted by the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science, the Weinberg Symposium features presentations, posters, and discussion centered on the theme: “The Cognitive Science of Concepts: Contrasting Perspectives Across the Disciplines.” Concepts--mental representations that underpin thought and reasoning--are understood and investigated in different ways across cognitive science's sub-disciplines, for example in developmental psychology, the study of animal cognition, and the study of artificial minds / artificial intelligence (AI).

A keynote lecture, “Do Apes Believe? The Concept of 'Belief' in Great Apes and Human Children,” by Michael Tomasello (Duke University) kicks off the two-day symposium on Friday, April 10. The lecture will be followed by a poster session and reception.

The second day of the symposium, Saturday, April 11, will feature a range of contrasting and potentially complementary perspectives on concepts by leading scholars in several disciplines. Guest speakers include Marjorie Rhodes (New York University), Sandra Waxman (Northwestern University), Surya Ganguli (Stanford University), and Michael Strevens (New York University).

Saturday’s activities will also feature a panel discussion with U-M faculty, and ample time for participant and student interaction.

Please visit the 2020 Weinberg Symposium webpage to see the full agenda including speakers, presentation titles, and registration details.
