Ginsberg Graduate Academic Liaisons serve as connectors to their home departments, while deepening their knowledge and application of community engaged scholarship and practice. Graduate Academic Liaisons make a one-year commitment, renewable upon mutual agreement.

Liaisons help broaden the Ginsberg Center’s capacity to support faculty in preparing students for community engagement through leading curricular and co-curricular workshops, developing curriculum, and integrating current research into Ginsberg Center materials and resources. In return, they are part of a community of practice centered around equitable community engagement. Liaisons learn and apply best practices, cultivate their leadership skills, form relationships with other students, faculty and community partners, and contribute to the Center's mission to support equitable campus-community partnerships in service to the public good.

WHO:
Doctoral students interested in applying and expanding their knowledge and experience with community engagement.

TIME COMMITMENT & PAY:
Each liaison commits to 5 hours a week for both the Fall and Winter semesters, including regular meetings with Ginsberg Center staff and cohort meetings. Depending on availability and project needs, there is also the possibility of working with us over the summer. Liaisons are typically paid $15/hour.

HOW TO APPLY:
The online application is due Friday, May 1, 2020. We will contact applicants to set up a virtual interview.

Please contact us at ginsberg.engage@umich.edu with any questions.

Building Student Dispositions for Community Engaged Learning (May 7, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73987 73987-18454155@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 7, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

This webinar introduces dispositions as a framework for students’ community-engaged learning. Dispositions are filters made up of values, beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and prior experiences that shape how we take in information and make sense of it. Too often, student orientation to community-engaged learning is a checklist of signing waiver forms, logging volunteer hours, and meeting minimum requirements. While logistics matter, the heart of preparation for engaging with community is bringing and developing a set of dispositions that foster positive cognitive and affective growth. While many dispositions can contribute to such growth, focusing on a small set of strategic dispositions provides a robust frame for making sense of community-engaged learning experiences. The webinar is structured around six dispositions: open-mindedness, humility, appreciation of community cultural wealth, intellectual curiosity, empathy, and commitment. These dispositions are particularly vital for community engaged learning designed to promote critical thinking and social justice.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Detroit has emerged as an epicenter of the crisis. To date, more than 1300 Detroiters have died from a coronavirus infection and 43 percent of city residents have lost their jobs. In this ISR Insights talk, Jeffrey Morenoff (Professor, Sociology and Public Policy; Director, Population Studies Center) and Lydia Wileden (PhD Candidate, Sociology and Public Policy; Population Studies Center trainee) will discuss efforts by the Detroit Metro Area Communities Study -- a panel study of more than 1100 Detroiters -- to capture the real-time experiences of Detroiters and share insights from two survey waves on the dramatic financial precarity facing many Detroit households and the behavioral and economic changes residents are making to get by.

2020 Dewey Lecture: Building a Civic Temper (September 18, 2020 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73527 73527-18252294@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 18, 2020 8:30am
Location:
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

The Edward Ginsberg Center, in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art, warmly invite UM faculty, staff, students and community partners to join us for our biannual event.

The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s, and later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us, and, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.

This year's theme is inspired by William James' 1906 Essay, 'The Moral Equivalent of War.' While some of James' assertions are cause for critique, his primary observation that we need to focus on building our shared public life remains more important than ever.

Acknowledging that the events unfolding--locally and nationally--are on our minds, and after careful reflection, we have modified the agenda for this year’s Dewey Lecture. We’re breaking the event into two parts, with this Friday’s part focused on building community and engaging with one another through a facilitated discussion activity. Our planned panel will be part 2, convened later this year.

Register today!
