2020 Dewey Lecture: Building a Civic Temper (September 18, 2020 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73527 73527-18252294@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 18, 2020 8:30am
Location:
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

The Edward Ginsberg Center, in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art, warmly invite UM faculty, staff, students and community partners to join us for our biannual event.

The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s, and later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us, and, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.

This year's theme is inspired by William James' 1906 Essay, 'The Moral Equivalent of War.' While some of James' assertions are cause for critique, his primary observation that we need to focus on building our shared public life remains more important than ever.

Acknowledging that the events unfolding--locally and nationally--are on our minds, and after careful reflection, we have modified the agenda for this year’s Dewey Lecture. We’re breaking the event into two parts, with this Friday’s part focused on building community and engaging with one another through a facilitated discussion activity. Our planned panel will be part 2, convened later this year.

Register today!

This interactive virtual workshop will interrogate the role white supremacy often plays in university community engagement experiences and will explore anti-racist approaches to our work in and with communities. The workshop is designed for students with prior knowledge or experience with community engagement who are interested in learning more about how to practice anti-racism in their engaged course, service, project, or research.

Workshop content will build on basic concepts of race, racism, social identity, power, and privilege. If you're newer to those concepts and how they connect to community engagement, we encourage you to complete modules 1 and 2 of the *Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change MOOC* and/or attend our Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities workshop (see upcoming sessions on *our homepage*) before signing up for this offering. You may also want to read Tania Mitchell's (2008) “*Traditional vs. Critical Service-Learning*” before attending. All these links as well as the registration link are available below under "*Related Links*."

The So Cool So Just (SCSJ) Organization Fair is hosted by the Community Action and Social Change (CASC) Undergraduate Minor and the Ginsberg Center. Since 2012, the fair has created space for organizations to connect with students seeking opportunities to get involved on campus, build community with other social justice organizations, and share activities and programs related to social change.

This year, we are planning a virtual fair, where registered organizations will host a drop-in informational. Details on how to participate will be provided during the month of August. If you have questions, email scsjplanningteam@umich.edu for information.

If you are interested in tabling or attending this program, visit the RSVP linked in this announcement.

The virtual zoom link will be provided in September, prior to the event.

This interactive virtual workshop will interrogate the role white supremacy often plays in university-community engagement experiences and will explore anti-racist approaches to our work in and with communities. The workshop is designed for faculty and staff with prior knowledge or experience with community engagement who are interested in learning more about how to practice anti-racism in their engaged course, research, or program.

Workshop content will build on basic concepts of race, racism, social identity, power, and privilege. If you're newer to these concepts and how they connect to community engagement, you may want to read Tania Mitchell's (2008) “Traditional vs. Critical Service-Learning” before attending.

Community engagement professionals from UW-Madison will facilitate a session with EU practitioners to increase cross-country connections for knowledge exchange. With so much output around engagement within our own borders, it can be difficult knowing where to access new knowledge coming out globally, and there is much to share between countries about different ways to organize community-based research in all its forms (CBR, CBPR, PAR). In our experience, graduate students and new faculty have said they want to learn more about different models to create equitable research and class projects. The International Living Knowledge Network of “Science Shops” has a 40-year history using principles of knowledge co-creation in a ‘brokerage’ type fashion. Forging positive links with researchers in the EU and beyond would also yield mutually beneficial exchanges of information and resources in both directions, helping increase the reach of CBR and innovation projects globally. While current U.S. political polarization creates heavy headwinds for science and research, many U.S. individuals and institutions are working hard to encourage knowledge co-production, including some robust activities in CBR and Citizen Science we can share and compare.

Broader Impacts: Resources for Planning Successful Proposals & Projects (November 20, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78296 78296-20004841@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 20, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: OVPR Office of Research Development

Broader Impacts refers to the potential for a research project to benefit society or advance desired societal outcomes. Having a strong Broader Impacts plan is pivotal to your chances of getting NSF funding, especially for assistant professors pursuing CAREER grants. Moreover, many foundations and private funders prioritize public engagement and impact in their grantmaking.

Whether pursuing federal or private funding, one thing is consistent--it's critical to plan ahead. Much time is needed to establish partnerships, get stakeholder buy-in, negotiate project terms and expectations, and get appropriate approvals and letters of support.

Several U-M units support these efforts and can serve as your "front door" to community engagement, including facilitating projects with K-12 schools, local non-profits, museums and an array of external partners around the state.

Join us to learn how researchers can leverage campus experts and resources to develop compelling, dynamic and successful Broader Impacts or public engagement project plans. Panelists include colleagues from the Ginsberg Center, Center for Educational Outreach, Center for Academic Innovation, Center for Education Design, Evaluation & Research (CEDER), Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) and the U-M Natural History Museum.

We will discuss COVID-19 as the global pandemic impacts the lives and livelihood of people across the world. Our discussion will focus on policy, both implemented and proposed, at the federal and state level and small-group time will be dedicated to a deep dive into the day-to-day implications of COVID-19.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Advancing Public Safety at the University of Michigan Task Force community forum (February 2, 2021 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/81617 81617-20933525@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 2, 2021 11:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The Advancing Public Safety at the University of Michigan Task Force — one of several anti-racism initiatives the university announced last fall — will host its first community forum from 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

The event, which will take place virtually, will allow Ann Arbor campus faculty, staff, students, parents and Ann Arbor community members to share their experiences with campus policing and public safety, or join and listen.

Input from the forum will help identify what is going well and areas for improvement as it relates to fostering public safety and securing a campus environment that encourages academic excellence.

Those interested in speaking to their experience with overall public safety on campus, or with DPSS specifically, can do so by registering online. Community members can also share their input through a survey, which will be available until Feb. 15.

The survey results and the session input will be used to inform the task force’s preliminary findings, and a final report will be publicly presented at the end of April.

Advancing Public Safety at the University of Michigan Task Force community forum (February 9, 2021 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81617 81617-20935503@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 9, 2021 7:00pm
Location:

This interactive virtual workshop will interrogate the role white supremacy often plays in university-community engagement experiences and will explore anti-racist approaches to our work in and with communities. The workshop is designed for academic partners with prior knowledge or experience with community engagement who are interested in learning more about how to practice anti-racism in their engaged course, research, or program.

Workshop content will build on basic concepts of race, racism, social identity, power, and privilege. If you're newer to these concepts and how they connect to community engagement, you may want to read Tania Mitchell's (2008) “Traditional vs. Critical Service-Learning” before attending.

As both consumers and purveyors of information, how we interact with data is ever evolving. Now, more than ever, data for good represents a diverse and interdisciplinary effort to engage, educate, and empower the world around us. Statistics in the Community (STATCOM), the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research (CEDER), and the Community Technical Assistance Collaborative (CTAC) invite you to attend the 4th annual Data for Public Good Symposium hosted by the Michigan Institute for Data Science. The symposium will launch virtually on Thursday, February 25, 2021 and will showcase the many research efforts and university/community partnerships that focus on improving humanity by using data for the public good.

Data for Good in Changing Times

This year’s symposium will focus on how data can help us best predict, catalyze, or respond to large-scale societal and environmental change. As we currently navigate these changes in several key areas, this symposium offers an opportunity to learn about the data-driven work that is being done to address the following challenges and develop skills to implement your own data-driven work in these spaces:

Public health and medicine
Social justice and equity
Politics and civic engagement
K-12 and higher education
Climate change and sustainability

Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN (March 1, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82365 82365-21070618@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 1, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

MESA is proud to present Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN. Join us for a thrilling event where Janaya Khan will discuss “The Future within the Black Lives Matter Movement and The Intersections of being a Black, Queer, and Gender-Nonconforming Activist" This event is sponsored by The Spectrum Center and Central Student Government, and will be co-moderated by students Adrian King (they/them), PhD candidate in American Culture, and Jolyna Chiangong, who will be joined by Vice President Of Student Life Dr. Martino Harmon.

With a timely message about the transformational power of protest, Janaya Khan is a leading activist who engages their community in a profound discussion about social justice and equality. Known as ‘Future’ within the Black Lives Matter movement, Janaya is a black, queer, gender-nonconforming activist (pronouns: they, them, theirs), staunch Afrofuturist and social-justice educator who presents an enlightening point of view on police brutality and systemic racism.

“Throughout the political tumult of 2020, one of the most prominent voices to become a source of healing and hope was Janaya Future Khan, whose rapidly-growing audience across social media now numbers in the hundreds of thousands. But while the activist’s weekly Sunday Sermons on Instagram provided a necessary forum for those looking to reflect and regroup during the pandemic and the instances of police brutality that sparked a renewal of energy behind the Black Lives Matter movement, Khan’s activism extends much further back—all the way to their childhood, spent between Toronto and Florida, and their subsequent years as a competitive boxer.

Galvanized by the 2014 killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson and Jermaine Carby in Toronto at the hands of police officers, Khan has had a longstanding involvement in Black Lives Matter—even launching its first international chapter in Canada—and became a necessary and informed voice for those seeking direction last summer. And like many around the world, Khan found themselves dismayed and angered by the scenes that unfolded on Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol building, where riots led by Trump supporters sieged the building to disrupt the final counting of the Electoral College ballots in favor of Joe Biden’s Presidential win, resulting in five deaths.” BY LIAM HESS January 10, 2021

MESA and the Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize.
