UPDATE: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our meetings will take place virtually until further notice, using the Zoom platform. Contact annarbor@citizensclimatelobby.org for connection information.

Worried about climate change? Wondering how you can make a real difference? Come to the monthly meeting of the Ann Arbor chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL). CCL is a national, grassroots organization working to enact federal legislation to put a price on CO2. It is the most focused and influential organization working on national climate policy. We are working to build support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (energyinnovationact.org). This comprehensive, bipartisan legislation is projected to reduce our carbon emissions by at least 40% in 12 years. Our meetings consist of dialing in to a national conference call (featuring different guest speakers each month), followed by local discussion of actions. Newcomers are welcome to come at 12:30 for a brief overview.

This Study Group is free and available to the public. OLLI membership is not required.

Once we reach a certain age, most of us have stories we want to tell, and reasons we believe people should listen. After working for 20 years with young children and their stories and play (using the books of Vivian Paley as a jumping-off point), I began to notice the ways in which children used short stories to “practice mental health” and engage with friends. This led me to develop characters (an alter ego, an imaginary friend, and a chicken); some storytelling strategies, and a map.

In this three-week study group, we’ll use the map to field test my findings, with the goal of developing a more collaborative approach to storytelling, one that could improve the ability of humans of all ages to communicate through story. Each session will last approximately 90 minutes.

Alison Climes graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in International Studies and Spanish in 2015. Her post-graduation journey took her from Santiago to Tucson to Monterey and now back to Ann Arbor, where she works as a Student Engagement Coordinator at the University of Michigan Ginsberg Center.

After graduation, Alison spent a semester teaching English through the English Opens Doors Program in Puente Alto, Chile which gave her the opportunity to practice her Spanish and gain further exposure to the world of education. She then returned to Michigan and taught a semester of high-school Spanish before moving to Tucson, Arizona, to work with a refugee education program for middle- and high-school youth. Her interest in comparative and international education, and education diplomacy programs inspired her to pursue a master's program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, in International Education Management (IEM). During her Master's program, she led youth international exchange programs and completed her Master's degree in 2019.

In her current role at the University of Michigan Ginsberg Center, Alison aims to help students identify their own strengths and develop a strong sense of self while also working to become active citizens engaged in their communities and working towards social justice.

In advance of the Presidential election, UMMA and U-M's Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning created the “Dialogue Deck for Personal and Political Reflection." The Dialogue Deck pairs twelve images from UMMA’s permanent collection with provocative discussion prompts designed to encourage conversation and reflection about US culture and politics. The Dialogue Deck activity is meant to encourage meaningful dialogue and connection with your family, friends, colleagues, and maybe even yourself.

During the month of October, UMMA will host three "Democracy Conversations" via Zoom that feature the Dialogue Deck activity. Participants will be sorted into small breakout groups of 4-5 people and paired with a host who will gently guide the activity and conversation.  Conversations will last one hour, and offer the opportunity for individuals to learn more about the Dialogue Deck activity and engage in conversation with others outside their immediate social circles.

The Dialogue Deck can be used by anyone as a self-guided discussion tool, and the print version of the deck is available for free at the UMMA Shop.

UMMA's Vote2020 initiative is presented in connection with the U-M Democracy & Debate theme semester. Location:
Organized By: Students of Michigan (CSG)

Event Sponsors: ACLU, UM Flint, Latinx Technology Center

A day of action is a city-wide literature drop campaign to inform Flint residents on their voting rights for the 2020 general election. Organized volunteers will be spread throughout the community to address historic voter suppression and intimidation tactics. Due to Flint’s historically low voter turnout rate, it is important that we are active in encouraging ALL people to exercise their constitutional responsibility and vote.

Saturday, October 17th
10 am to 2 pm

We have four sites volunteers will be assigned to:
Latinx Technology and Community Center - *2101 Lewis St. Flint, MI 48506*
Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint - *3701 N Averill Ave, Flint, MI 48506*
Flint Development Center - *4121 Martin Luther King Ave, Flint, MI 48505*
Sylvester Broom Empowerment Village - *4119 N. Saginaw Flint, MI 48505*

The Flint First Initiative was created to extend a strong student leadership presence in the community beyond The University of Michigan-Flint campus. The goal of the Initiative is to register and inform a historically disenfranchised community affected by voter suppression and systemic racism.

For our second phase of the initiative, we are mobilizing 300 volunteers to participate in a door-to-door literature drop campaign to inform residents of their voting rights, on Saturday, October 17, 2020. The target goal for this day is 21,000 households. There will be guest speakers who are elected officials from local, state and federal governments.

Organized By: Department of Learning Health Sciences

Healthcare and health remain unconscionably inequitable. This year, the disproportionate toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on those historically least well-served by our health system, has highlighted the pressing societal challenge of health disparities.

Beyond simply striving to do no harm, Learning Health Systems (LHSs) have the potential to serve as forces for justice in healthcare and health; indeed, they can be powerful drivers of diversity, equity, and inclusion. LHSs are anchored in multi-stakeholder consensus Core Values that explicitly incorporate principles such as inclusiveness, transparency, and accessibility. Their proximal goal is "to efficiently and equitably serve the learning needs of all participants, as well as the overall public good."

The October 2020 LHS Collaboratory will share lessons from health advocates working on the front lines to make healthcare and health more equitable. These thought leaders and do-ers will illuminate the transformative power of LHSs - and the diverse and inclusive communities of interest that are collaborating to realize them.

The 2020 Building Power Against White Supremacy Conference: Beyond Voting is this Saturday, October 24, 2020, from 12 PM to 4:30 PM ET!

Register today at https://buildingpower20.wixsite.com/bpaws2020.

With the U.S. general election days away, we’ll have rich conversations all afternoon about how we might reimagine our current democracy. While the theme speaks to a crucial election year where our votes are an explicit argument against white supremacy and anti-blackness, we also know that voting is not the only tool we wield to transform the injustices we are immersed in.

Come! Join in community to learn about what other tools we have. Build relationships, care for ourselves and one another, and dig into how we abolish the systems that bind us to the settler colonial project of white supremacy.

We invite you to visit our website to browse the conference schedule, explore this year’s Beyond Voting theme, and register for the conference at https://buildingpower20.wixsite.com/bpaws2020.

“The Weight of Honor” is the first comprehensive documentary to chronicle the lives of families caring for their
catastrophically wounded returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the course of five years, the film follows the arc of what
happens when some of America's best and strongest volunteer to protect our nation, but return home physically and emotionally
broken and disillusioned. What happens when they return is not only a personal journey but also that of their family caregivers who
have no training other than the love for their wounded. Our military does not prepare families for the return of a wounded warrior.
“The Weight of Honor” tells their stories of strength, exhaustion, conflict, and even humor as they chart a course through the
unknown

For more than 120 years, the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) has been serving the community, saving animals and helping people. HSHV is still the only animal shelter in Washtenaw County, taking in all types of unwanted, injured, lost, stray, abandoned, and abused animals.

Today, they help over 14,000 animals and their people every year. HSHV is governed by a board of directors and is supported by generous individual and corporate donors.

This presentation will explore how the HSHV engages within our community, and share their vital work in areas of Adoption, Cruelty & Rescue, and Humane Education. We’ll learn how the Humane Society has gone virtual during COVID-19, and will be introduced to some of their adoptable animals.

Our speaker, Jessie Hitt, is the Humane Education Manager at HSHV. She has a master’s degree in Humane Education from Valparaiso University and has worked at HSHV for the past seven years.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

Impact of COVID-19 on Service Workers: Work Experiences & Concerns of food retail, food services, and hospitality workers (November 24, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79384 79384-20288598@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 24, 2020 12:00pm

ABSTRACT
Objectives: COVID-19 presents a unique burden specifically for workers in service industries not only because they are disproportionately at risk for contracting the virus but also because of their work-related burdens. We aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on these workers.
Methods: This was a mixed-method study with a congruent triangulation design. Participants were recruited through social media. Each interview lasted up to 20 minutes. The survey data included demographic questions along with items from the CAGE and PC-PTSD questionnaires.
Results: Twenty-seven individuals completed audio-recorded phone interviews and 28 completed the survey. Participants were mostly women with an age range between 19 and 65. Participants worked in food retail (n=23), restaurant (n=25), and hospitality (n=7) industries. Length of time on the job ranged from two months to 25 years and 60% of the participants worked full time. Participants reported experiencing symptoms of depression and maladaptive coping. Job insecurity, change of job tasks, and work hours were the most common ways that COVID-19 affected the workers. Themes that emerged about participant’s concerns included being infected and/or unknowingly infecting others, the unknown, isolation, and work and customer demands. Constant changes relating to communication and protection measures were a major source of stress. There was discordance in the perceived level of threat of COVID-19. Most participants reported that their workplace complied with their state’s mandates for protection measures. While others reported lacking basic supplies such as soap, hand sanitizer, and masks.
Conclusions: In addition to their work experiences, COVID-19 has affected service workers at the financial, physical and mental levels. This study has implications of employers, occupational health and safety professionals and policy stakeholders.

Season of Giving: Food Drive for Food Gatherers (December 14, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79856 79856-20509614@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 14, 2020 8:00am
Location: North Campus Research Complex Building 18
Organized By: Michigan Medicine

The season of giving has once again arrived in Michigan. But this one comes amid a surging pandemic, an economic downturn, and a looming deadline for continuation of federal financial relief.

All of these have created intense need in communities surrounding Michigan Medicine. In response, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center will launch a third effort to encourage its own team, and the local community, to give food and funds to support Food Gatherers.

Starting December 14, and continuing through the 22nd, this will include a convenient drive-up drop-off location for food and toiletries, open to U-M faculty, staff and students, and members of the community in a position to give. It's located at Dock 90 of the North Campus Research Complex, just off Huron Parkway.

Donors may give online via credit card, or get information about giving by mail or phone, at http://www.foodgatherers.org/UM.

Already this year, donors to Michigan Medicine’s previous two drives have contributed the equivalent of 128,000 meals for Food Gatherers to distribute to more than 170 agencies that serve people throughout Washtenaw County and beyond. Generous individuals have also given thousands of pounds of personal care items, from diapers to toothbrushes.

The donation drive started in March, as part of Michigan Medicine’s effort to gather much-needed personal protective equipment during the early days of the pandemic when normal supply chains were disrupted.

Since that time, Food Gatherers’ partners have experienced a consistent surge in demand from people affected by the economic effects of the pandemic. Uncertainty over the future of federal and state relief efforts is making planning difficult.

In a recent interview, Ms. Brown said “We wanted people, we wanted Black voters in particular, to feel a sense of their power and their agency, and in spite of all odds, what we could do in pushing this country forward.

Ms. Brown is also an award-winning thought leader, social strategist, philanthropic consultant, jazz singer, and catalyst for change. As co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, Ms. Brown is dedicated to increasing the political power of Black people. Pivoting During a Pandemic: How Nonprofit Organizations Are Innovating and Adapting Through a Time of Crisis (February 23, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82018 82018-21006754@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 23, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Business+Impact at Michigan Ross

Each year, the University of Michigan Board Fellowship Program hosts a public forum in the form of a panel discussion with representatives from local nonprofit organizations. This year, the theme of the forum is “Pivoting During a Pandemic: How Nonprofit Organizations Have Innovated and Adapted During a Time of Crisis.” The COVID-19 pandemic has created new realities and challenges while deepening and exposing existing inequities. Within the nonprofit sector these impacts have been felt widely and profoundly. Join us as our panelists discuss questions such as: How has the pandemic impacted their organizations, and how has the board of directors pivoted to adapt to this crisis? What challenges and opportunities have organizations encountered and how did they approach them? How has the organization’s funding model and operational model transformed? How have staff and board members' duties and responsibilities changed since the onset of the pandemic? What has been their most successful pivot? How have funders pivoted to meet community needs and develop new models of collaboration?

The following panelists will participate in the discussion:

Pam Smith, President & CEO of the United Way of Washtenaw County
Darryl L. Johnson, Executive Director of Mentor2Youth
Ebon Wilkins, Board Member for North Star Reach
Tim Carter, Board Member for Ten Thousand Villages of Huron Valley

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring an event to mark the 5-year anniversary of the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Public understanding is limited regarding how exposures to toxic chemicals affect health and how they might be regulated. Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. The 1976 TSCA has been widely acknowledged to be a weak and ineffective law, and widespread exposures and harms continue. In the U.S., everyone is exposed to industrial and toxic chemicals, dozens and probably hundreds – well before birth. The amount of chemicals manufactured and imported continues to grow – it is trillions of pounds – and these chemicals remain largely unregulated. At the same time, we have seen an increase in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, autism, and infertility. Not everyone is equally at risk, and a higher burden of disease falls on low wealth communities and communities of color. These health disparities in exposures and health effects are illustrated and exacerbated by COVID.

The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Speakers Stefan Boes, PhD and Sarah Mantwill, PhD from the university of Lucerne will discuss the Swiss Learning Health System.

Promoting and supporting uptake of evidence and evidence-informed decision-making in health-systems related policy and practice is a challenge. In Switzerland, the need to address this matter has been increasingly emphasized by different actors in the health system. In particular, the lack of comprehensive coordination efforts in the field of health services research, and subsequent knowledge translation activities, has been stressed. In response, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) was established as a nationwide project in 2017, currently involving 10 academic partner institutions. One of the overarching objectives of the SLHS is to bridge research, policy, and practice by providing an infrastructure that supports learning cycles by: continuously identifying issues relevant to the Swiss health system, systemizing relevant evidence, presenting potential courses of action, and revising and reshaping responses. Key features of learning cycles in the SLHS include the development of policy/evidence briefs that serve as a basis for stakeholder dialogues with actors from research, policy and practice. Issues that are identified to be further pursued are monitored for potential implementation and eventually evaluated to inform new learning cycles and to support continuous learning within the system.

Dr. Boes and Dr. Mantwill will provide an overview of the SLHS and its key features, as well as its capacity building efforts to train young researchers in the field of learning health systems, and the development of a centralized metadata repository in support of creating a sufficient large evidence basis to support learning cycles in the Swiss health system. Further, they will discuss lessons learned from the past and the newest developments of the SLHS in light of a second funding phase supported by the Swiss government.
