Directed by MiMi Scardulla
Music Direction by Jason DeBord

The setting is the roaring 1920s. Lovers Queenie and Burrs decide to throw the party-to-end-all-parties in their Manhattan apartment. After the arrival of a slew of colorful guests living life on the edge, Queenie's wandering eye lands on a striking man named Mr. Black. As the decadence is reaching a climax, so is Burrs' jealousy, which erupts and sends him into a violent rage. Gun in hand and inhibitions abandoned, Burrs turns on Queenie and Black. The gun gets fired, but who's been shot?

A steamy prohibition tale, steamrolling and roaring its way across the stage, The Wild Party was an Off-Broadway gem that garnered an array of industry accolades, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards. Based on Joseph Moncure March's 1928 narrative poem of the same name, this darkly brilliant show features one of the most exciting, pulse-racing scores ever written, courtesy of SMTD alumnus Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, Big Fish).

Nora Helmer has been a feminist icon since her first appearance in 1879 as the lead character in Henrik Ibsen’s then-controversial A Doll’s House. 140 years later, Olivier Award-winning playwright Stef Smith has reshaped Nora’s singular struggle for financial and emotional independence into three characters, setting three Noras on parallel paths in different time periods. As their stories unfold, shifting cultural expectations exert their pressure on each Nora as what it means to be a feminist changes.

Nora: A Doll’s House received its premiere at Citizen’s Theatre in Glasgow in 2019 before moving to the Young Vic in early 2020.

The Size of Darkness aka The Light We Cannot See - VIM VIGOR DANCE
and an excerpt from the work to be performed by students at the Power Center in 2022.

VIM VIGOR, founded and directed by U-M Department of Dance associate professor Shannon Gillen, presents a work-in-progress showing of their latest research, THE SIZE OF DARKNESS.

As audiences and performers re-enter the intimacy of theater spaces, a place where our expectations and opinions are exposed to new and freshly realized experience, we are again cohabitating the unknown. THE SIZE OF DARKNESS dives headlong into states of unknowing, catapulting performers through wild physicality and heroic abandon. Audiences will ride with three performers on a journey of becoming, as the ephemeral nature of dance swallows the past and flows into the future. This work will be set to an original electronic score by Marshall Chadbourne, where sounds of lightness and darkness, density and nothingness, effort and release converge.

With daredevil physicality, VIM VIGOR communicates the complexity of human relationships through their signature dance-theater aesthetic, bodies will flare, emotions will flood, and the sharp urgency of our deepest feelings will rocket through space.

Choreography: Shannon Gillen and Jason Cianciulli

Steve Swell is one of the finest composers/improvisers on the New York downtown scene and is internationally acclaimed for his trombone playing. He has performed regularly in Europe, often in Poland, where he has established important connections with local musicians. On one of his many trips to Kraków he decided to visit Auschwitz, and wrote, “The first time I tried to visit Auschwitz in 2007, there was no train. They had changed the track of the train that regularly departed for there. They announced the track change in Polish but not in English. There were about two very angry people yelling and screaming at the ticket sellers and railroad staff as to this oversight. Can you imagine, people yelling that they missed the train to Auschwitz and that it had ruined their day?”

Later he wrote, "*If Trains Could Speak* is inspired by that ninety-minute train ride from Kraków to Auschwitz concentration camp. The ride itself is through some very beautiful, peaceful countryside and farmland in southeast Poland. The incongruity of my ride and the ride of those whose trip seventy years before was one of uncertainty and hopelessness prompted a multitude of thoughts and feelings as the train progressed to its destination. The journey and visit to the camp itself sparked a deeper understanding of the horrors that humans are capable of and its juxtaposition to our ability to be brilliant, creative, and tolerant. Delving into the choice we have in either surrendering to our baser instincts or transcending them, feeds my own lifelong curiosity of what it means to be alive, and to know that life is fragile, dangerous, and magnificent all at the same time."

In addition to the composer on trombone, the performance will feature Deanna Relyea, mezzo-soprano; Jason Kao Hwang, violin and viola; Piotr Michalowski, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone; Steve Rush, piano; Ken Filiano, bass; and Michael TA Thompson, percussion.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

Music by Jules Massenet

After the fairy tale by Charles Perrault
Stage Direction by Abbigail Coté
Music Direction by Kirk Severtson

The King is throwing a ball in Prince Charming’s honor, and all will be in attendance—except for Lucette, known as “Cinderella” to her stepmother & stepsisters—until Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother steps in. The fairy’s spell lasts only until midnight. That’s long enough for Cinderella and Prince Charming to meet and fall in love.

This witty French opera premiered in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on May 24, 1899. It is based on the classic fairy tale as told by Charles Perrault. This operatic version is closer to Perrault’s story than the version used in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Its music is full of melodic charm with recognizable arias.

This production will be sung in French with projected English translations.

VENUE CORRECTION - This masterclass will be in the Earl V. Moore Hankinson Rehearsal Hall (2005 Baits Drive)

Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it [is] luxurious,” Carol Jantsch has been principal tuba of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006. She won the position during her senior year at the University of Michigan, becoming the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra.

In addition to her duties in the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Jantsch is a renowned tuba soloist. She gives solo recitals regularly, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with various ensembles, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony, the St. Petersburg Symphony in Russia, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the United States Marine Band. She has performed in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall with the Musical Olympus Festival, and has appeared on the radio on NPR’s series From the Top and Interlochen Public Radio’s Live From Studio A. In 2009 she was honored with a “Best of Philly” award from Philadelphia magazine. She has also won prizes in several international solo tuba competitions, and alumni awards from both Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan.

Ms. Jantsch is in increasing demand as a teacher worldwide, having given master classes in Europe, Asia, and North America. She enjoys working with young musicians, and has been a featured artist at various brass festivals in Finland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. She is on the faculty at the Yale University School of Music and Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.

Ms. Jantsch is an advocate for music education in her community. In 2018, she founded Tubas For Good, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides instruments for students in the Philadelphia School District. Ms. Jantsch coaches music students from the district both through Tubas For Good and through the Philadelphia Orchestra’s All-City program. Since 2017, she has hosted an annual Tuba/Euphonium PlayIN, a free community event where players of all ages and skill levels are invited to perform as a mass tuba ensemble on the Verizon Hall stage.

Ms. Jantsch enjoys interacting with audiences in a very different way than her orchestra role as a member of Tubular, a tuba cover band that performs at bars and events. Comprised of tubas, euphoniums, drums, and vocals, Tubular is committed to presenting pop and rock music in a fun and engaging way, while guilefully stretching people’s notions of the capabilities of low brass instruments. As the chief arranger of Tubular, Ms. Jantsch revels in the challenge of adapting music from ABBA to Zeppelin for this unique setting.

Raised in a musical family, Ms. Jantsch began piano lessons at age six and began studying euphonium at Interlochen Arts Camp at age nine. After switching to tuba, she attended the prestigious arts boarding high school Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating as salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Fritz Kaenzig. After winning her position with The Philadelphia Orchestra in February of 2006, she returned to Michigan to complete her Bachelor of Music degree, graduating with highest honors.

Ms. Jantsch can be heard on numerous Philadelphia Orchestra recordings, including the 2010 release of Ewald Quintets no. 1 and 3 with fellow Philadelphia Orchestra principal brass. She released her first solo recording, Cascades, in 2009. In 2013 she premiered Reflections on the Mississippi, a tuba concerto written for her and the Temple University Symphony Orchestra by Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty. She performed the concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2015, and recorded it with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan Symphony Band.

Ms. Jantsch is a Yamaha Performing Artist. She plays a Yamaha YFB-822 F tuba, a YFB-826 “Yamayork” CC tuba, and a PT-6 CC tuba.

Written by Jaclyn Backhaus
Directed by Emily Lyon (BFA ‵13, directing)

In 1869, a team of 10 men led by naturalist John Wesley Powell set out on an expedition to catalogue the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon—the first white settlers to do so. In 2015, playwright Jaclyn Backhaus set out to satirize the expedition and its bold yet arrogant explorers in a comedic tour-de-force that Time Out New York called a “thrilling, gender-flipped slice of manifest destiny.”

With a cast made up entirely of women, Men on Boats pokes fun at what New York Magazine calls the explorers’ “cockiness and cluelessness” in their attempts to exert their control on an unfamiliar (and already populated) environment. “The tone is comic, but never cute or camp,” says the New York Times. “And ultimately, you feel, the play respects its bold if fallible pioneers, in all their natural bravery and fearfulness.”

There is much mischief to be had in Shakespeare's most popular comedy when lovers defy authority and flee the court, only to find themselves caught in a zany web of illusion, romance, and magic in the Athenian woods. Featuring fairies, love potions, mixed-up lovers, magic spells, and a pompous rustic sporting a donkey's head, A Midsummer Night's Dream promises to bring laughter and a healthy dose of enchantment.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar takes on the origin story of America’s financial crisis in this fast-paced thriller the Los Angeles Times called “Part Shakespearean history play, part ‘The Big Short.’”

It’s 1985, and prominent financier Robert Merkin is taking the world by storm with his willingness to take on higher-risk, higher-yield bonds—what he calls “junk bonds.” As he sets out to take over a massive steel conglomerate by using its own debts as an asset, Merkin sets off a financial civil war that threatens to change the world as we know it.

Written by Ayad Akhtar
Directed by Geoff Packard

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Vince Cardinal

There is much mischief to be had in Shakespeare's most popular comedy when lovers defy authority and flee the court, only to find themselves caught in a zany web of illusion, romance, and magic in the Athenian woods. Featuring fairies, love potions, mixed-up lovers, magic spells, and a pompous rustic sporting a donkey's head, A Midsummer Night's Dream promises to bring laughter and a healthy dose of enchantment.

A concert of original collaborative intermedia performances for acoustic instruments and electronics by students from across SMTD on the theme of PROCESSING.

A bewildering succession and accretion of unusual, complex, traumatic, global phenomena prompt the individual and collective need to process what has happened and is happening. In spite of their recent and concurrent intensification, these phenomena aren’t events with well-defined horizons. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had its ebbs and flows; the struggle for racial justice long preceded the murder of George Floyd; the climate catastrophe has been unfolding for the better part of a century. These and other turmoils are unfolding processes, as are our grief, trauma, and efforts to cope.

At 7:15 join a pre-concert lecture and the 8:00PM performance by Concert Band and special guests, “Let Woman Choose Her Sphere.” This concert utilizes the centenary of the ratification of the 19th amendment as an opportunity to showcase the broader fight for equality throughout this country’s history to the present day. It is well known that only white women gained the right to vote in 1920, and the fight for truly universal suffrage continued in earnest for decades. But suffrage alone is not enough, and the fight for equality in all areas of public and private life continues. We celebrate the voices of those who have stood up and spoken out for rights in America. From Jane Adams to Janet Mock, this event is for ALL.

pre-concert lecture 7:15pm

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor

The University Symphony Orchestra presents the world premiere of Tales: A Folklore Symphony by Carlos Simon, U-M alumnus, now Resident Composer of the Kennedy Center. The 25-minute, four-movement work is the second piece of the project conceived and launched by Music Director Kenneth Kiesler in spring of 2020 which aims to commission a new orchestral work by a Black composer annually for a minimum of ten years.

The concert opens with Voices Shouting Out, an affirmative and optimistic work by Nkeiru Okoye. Okoye recalls sitting down to write music in the wake of 9/11, "I originally attempted to write Voices Crying Out, I could not…In the end, rather than “crying out,” my official response was Voices Shouting Out in freedom as it were, through the music. It was a march to acknowledge those fighting on behalf of our safety, and yet a sparkling celebration of life for those of us who continue living;."

When William Dawson earned his master’s degree at the American Conservatory, he and other Black students were not allowed to come to the stage to receive their degrees. When his Negro Folk Symphony was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1934, an outburst of applause followed the second movement, and thunderous applause called him back to the stage for multiple bows, and it received rave reviews from critics; a rare event for new music of the day. Dawson revised the Symphony in 1952 after a trip to West Africa.

Ana María Otamendi, piano - 2021 Emerging Artist in Music
Simón Gollo, violin
Horacio Contreras, cello

PROGRAM
Trio Romántico - Manuel Ponce
La Hamaca (The Hammock) - Ricardo Lorenz
Trio No. 1, op. 35 - Joaquín Turina

The Reverón Piano Trio’s main goal is to introduce audiences to underrepresented music from Latin America alongside contemporary and standard repertoire. These seasoned artists are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloguing, performance, and recording of this rich repertoire. In addition, the trio continues to commission new works, and is in the process of creating the Sphinx Catalog of Latin American Piano Trios. Ana María, Simón, and Horacio are all Venezuelan artists that have made their home in the United States.

The Reverón Trio is named after Venezuelan artist Armando Reverón, one of the earliest American modernists. Despite the fact that Reverón is now regarded as a highly influential figure in Latin America, his work is not celebrated outside the borders of Venezuela. Similarly, the music of Latin America is virtually unknown, especially the piano trio literature. It is the trio’s wish to enhance multicultural understanding and increase the visibility of Reverón’s work and of Latin American music.

The trio has been in residency at the University of Wisconsin, Dickinson College, Lawrence University, Louisiana State University, the Latin American Music Initiative's first conference, Aruba Symphony Festival, the Beethoven Festival Park City, the Collaborative Piano Institute, and has given many recitals, lectures, and masterclasses in the United States and Aruba. Upcoming projects include the release of their first audio recording produced and distributed globally by IBS Classical, the Latin American Chamber Music Series at the Music Institute of Chicago, and residencies at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and various other universities in the U.S. and abroad.

At the performance, Ana María Otamendi will be recognized as the 2021 Emerging Artist in Music. The Emerging Artist Awards recognize SMTD graduates from within the past fifteen years who have made a significant contribution to their artistic field. Winners from each of three categories (music, theatre, and dance) are awarded annually by the SMTD Alumni Board and are chosen from nominations made by alumni and faculty.
