Managing Sport Equipment Technological Advancements (February 16, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81759 81759-20951380@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 2:00pm

All sports depend, to some extent, on equipment, and advances in equipment have the potential to shift an athlete's performances independent of their training and skill. This technological tension has recently shaken the sport of running in the form of shoe advances, but many other sports have experienced and managed these same strains, including swimming, cycling, tennis, speed skating, and many more. This seminar will explore how technological developments within a sport, and the associated performance advantages they afford, impact that sport sociologically. This panel will bring perspectives related to product availability and athlete sponsorship ties, cultural perception and understanding of performance, and developmental implications across myriad levels of sport (e.g., youth, Olympic, masters). This discussion will aim to inform our understanding of what is to be gained, what might be lost, and what can be managed as sport evolves with technological developments. Toxic Equilibrium: Structural Racism and Population Health Inequities (February 24, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/81748 81748-20949404@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 24, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for Social Research

February 24, 2021
10:00am – 6:30pm
Eastern Time

The American social structure is composed of a resilient, symbiotic network of the formal and informal institutions that operate to maintain an equilibrium toward White privilege. Across time and place, changes in one institution can reverberate through other institutions, and importantly, when we attempt to intervene toward equity in one institution, other institutions can move to restore this toxic equilibrium. Cultural racism, which encompasses the socially accepted ideologies, values, and behavioral norms determined by the dominant power group, sets this equilibrium. Particularly insidious as it operates on the level of our shared social subconscious, the processes that comprise cultural racism are invisible to many because they are our “givens”, our assumptions, our defaults – but the result shapes our answers to the question: Whose life counts?

For our 6th annual University of Michigan RacismLab Symposium on the Study of Racism, we pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. James Jackson, whose mentorship guided our 1st annual symposium in 2015 and resulted in our guest edited Social Science and Medicine special issue on cultural and structural racism. In the introduction to this special issue, we called for all scholarship on race and health to be grounded in interdisciplinary frameworks of cultural and structural racism and critical race theory.

Our annual symposium continues to be sponsored by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research. For our virtual meeting in 2021, we partner with the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS) to move our discussions to a national stage. As we move to a national, interdisciplinary discussion, we are honored that a pioneer in the study of structural racism, Dr. Eduardo Bonilla Silva will serve as the keynote speaker this year.

Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

As society enters the era of Big Data, and intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems begins to embrace it, researchers will rely more on data to train controllers or validate them from repeated simulations.

This talk will describe autonomous and intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and how the availability of experimental testbeds has enabled discoveries applicable for societal-scale systems - one of which is the Cognitive and Autonomous Testbed Vehicle (CAT Vehicle). It has participated in several high-profile experiments regarding heterogeneous human-driven and semi-autonomous traffic flow. Dr. Sprinkle will detail ongoing efforts that explore how collaboration with researchers in application domain fields can dramatically expand available data sets. This also provides unique opportunities for exploring the security and privacy challenges that accompany societal-scale systems.

"You are what you eat" is a common phrase that researchers and scientists are proving remarkably true. Unhealthy diets not only lead to obesity, but that obesity can even lead to cognitive decline, or a decreased ability to think.

The third installment of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies Mini Symposium Series will explore what unhealthy foods do to the nervous system, a historical look at the downhill trend of eating habits, and how everyone can find an optimal nutritional balance. These presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.

“Nutrition & Brain Health” is made possible by the generous support of Robert and Katherine Jacobs, who believe that informing people about healthy food options is critically important to the health of their community.

Eva Feldman, MD, PhD, Director of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies, will moderate the 30-minute mini symposium and discuss diet and brain health. Debra Reid, PhD, MA, Curator of Agriculture and the Environment at The Henry Ford, will discuss the history of the American diet and how urban residents obtained fresh fruits and vegetables from urban markets, such as the Central Farmers Market that is under reconstruction at Greenfield Village. Michigan Medicine Lead Dietitian Danielle Karsies, MS, RDN, will provide direction for how people can apply the information from Drs. Feldman and Reid to help them make better food choices.

Using Artificial Intelligence for Optimal Truck Platooning under Uncertainties (March 31, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82674 82674-21155688@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 31, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Truck platooning is the process of using connected vehicle technology to join two or more trucks in a convoy. Platooning is associated with two, major societal benefits: environmental, through lowered fuel consumption, CO2 emission, and traffic efficiency, and safety improvement, through automated driving. Quantification of fuel consumption in platoons depends on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the system, specifically the resistance or drag force of trucks. While optimization of fuel consumption is pivotal in truck platooning, analysis of CFD is computationally expensive, especially when uncertainties are present, due to geometrical variability of trucks and platoons as well as in wind magnitude and direction.

This research proposes an artificial intelligence-based surrogate model which enables near real-time optimization of platoon configurations based on fuel consumption and impacts on pavement conditions. Attendees will learn how a deep neural network (DNN) model can be trained using data from CFD simulations that utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

The CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series returns this May with Professor Alexandre Bayen, the Liao-Cho Professor of Engineering at UC Berkeley! This talk investigates Lagrangian (mobile) control of traffic flow at local scale (vehicular level), and how self-driving vehicles will change traffic flow patterns. Professor Bayen describes approaches based on deep, reinforcement learning presented in the context of enabling mixed-autonomy mobility. This lecture also explores the gradual and complex integration of automated vehicles into the existing traffic system. Attendees will learn the potential impact of a small fraction of automated vehicles on low-level traffic flow dynamics, using novel techniques in model-free, deep reinforcement learning, in which the automated vehicles act as mobile (Lagrangian) controllers to traffic flow.

Illustrative examples will be presented in the context of a new, open-source computational platform called FLOW, which integrates state-of-the-art microsimulation tools with deep-RL libraries on AWS EC2. Interesting behavior of mixed autonomy traffic will be revealed in the context of emergent behavior of traffic: https://flow-project.github.io/

*State Expansion in Middle Horizon Peru: Re-Examining Wari Impact on the Local Communities of the Cusco Region*, by Veronique Belisle

In the Andes, the Middle Horizon (600-1000 CE) has traditionally been interpreted as a period during which a strong Wari imperial state conquered several provinces and tightly controlled local populations. In the Cusco region of southern Peru, research conducted at large Wari installations has long guided reconstructions of Wari power, leading scholars to argue that Wari presence resulted in the loss of local autonomy and the reorganization of economic activities. In this talk, I use regional surveys and excavation data from the local center of Ak’awillay to test this model and evaluate Wari military, economic, and religious impact in Cusco. Results do not support the hypothesis of a military conquest of the region and suggest strong continuity in agricultural production, exchange networks, and ritual activities. I conclude that Wari impact in Cusco was not as strong as originally proposed and that similar to other early states worldwide, Wari influence did not penetrate very deeply into local life.

*Colonial Legends and the Anthropological Reconstruction of Inca Origins*, by R. Alan Covey

Spaniards collected myths of Inca origins as part of political and religious discourse on colonization. Certain versions of the story eventually became part of Peruvian national history, a legend that John Rowe challenged in the 1940s with his own historical paradigm. Rowe's historicist approach influenced the work of lo andino scholarship in archaeology and ethnohistory as research proliferated from the late 1960s onward. In recent decades, a new body of archaeological data has demonstrated the need for a new anthropological paradigm for Inca origins. The completion of horizontal excavations and regional surveys, and the introduction of new analytical techniques (radiocarbon dates, bioarchaeology, geochemical analysis) have generated multiple lines of evidence for independently reconstructing important aspects of Inca state formation and early territorial expansion. Recent and emerging research encourages new approaches to the ethnohistoric record and better engagement with data from Inca provincial regions. This talk will review the intellectual history of the discourse on Inca origins, summarize current evidence, and identify areas for future interpretation, including issues that are difficult to resolve with archaeological evidence.

Cavnue was founded with the vision of bringing mobility to everyone. In order to do that, we must expand the autonomous driving capabilities of vehicles beyond where they are today. We believe that simplifying road designs and connecting vehicles to the infrastructure will be an important element in bringing autonomous technology to scale and making safer roads for everyone.

Billions have been invested to date, yet all we see are a few autonomous vehicle pilots running in cities across the country. How will fully driverless cars change mobility forever? What makes the technology so hard? How will connected vehicles and smart infrastructure play a part in bringing this technology to the world? This talk will create a conversation around these questions.

Speaker:
Philip R.O. Payne, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, FAIMBE, FIAHSI
Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and Director, Institute for Informatics (I2), Associate Dean for Health information and Data Science, Chief Data Scientist, at Washington University in St. Louis

This presentation will explore the ways in Biomedical Data Science and Informatics research are helping to realize the potential of EHR technologies in the context of creating an LHS, from the optimization of workflow and human factors, to the generation of reproducible and systematic clinical phenotypes, to the delivery of emergent knowledge to both providers and patients via advance clinical decision support systems.

Presentation 2
Techniques and Challenges for EHR Phenotyping

Speaker:
Lisa Bastarache, MS
Research Associate Professor Department of Biomedical Informatics,
Vanderbilt University

Electronic health records (EHR) contain a wealth of real world data that can be used for research purposes. However, extracting phenotype information from EHRs can be challenging. EHR phenotyping can be divided into two types: (1) Fast phenotyping which seeks to capture a broad swath of the medical phenome, and is often accomplished using coded EHR data (e.g. billing codes) and (2) slow phenotyping that seeks to achieve high precision and recall for a single phenotype, and often uses multiple EHR data types (e.g. medications, text, lab results). This talk will describe specific use-cases for both fast and slow phenotyping, and review challenges that are commonly encountered in creating research-grade EHR phenotypes.

Was Paul an Apocalyptic Jew? A Case in Jewish Diversity in the Second Temple Period (October 25, 2021 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/87463 87463-21642274@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 25, 2021 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Judaic Studies

Conference Chairs: Gabriele Boccaccini; Lisa Bowens; Emma Wasserman; Loren Stuckenbruck

Secretary: Joshua Scott

Paul of Tarsus was born, lived and died a Jew. Raised as a Pharisee, he then joined the early Jesus movement, a first-century Jewish apocalyptic and messianic group. Paul became one of the most vocal leaders of the new movement and promoted its expansion among the gentiles. The conference, organized by the Enoch Seminar and the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies, aims to move Pauline research to a further stage, beyond reclaiming Paul to Second Temple Judaism and proving that “he was not Lutheran.” By taking Paul’s Jewishness as a shared starting point, the conference explores the figure of Paul within Second Temple Judaism in a line of continuity with the Jewish apocalyptic tradition (and the Enochic tradition in particular), not as an apostate of Judaism but as part of the vibrant Jewish diversity of the time.

The conference will not be aimed at a general audience, but will instead bring together a group of selected specialists. It will be a workshop with discussion sessions introduced by oral presentations by specialists, more than a series of papers. The goal is to gather all major specialists working in the field and have plenty of time for discussion.

For more information, contact the conference secretary, Joshua Scott (scottjos@umich.edu).

The safety issues of cycling have become an increasing concern. This presentation, led by Drs. Shan Bao and Fred Feng, describes two unique studies related to cycling safety, from crash data analysis to a recent naturalistic cycling study in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Crash Report Sampling System data was used in this study to identify significant factors that impact cyclists’ crash injury levels. In the naturalistic cycling study, a fleet of four electric bikes was instrumented with cameras and GPS and was given to study participants as a substitute for their own bicycle. A total of over 5,000 miles of riding data from 77 subjects were collected over two years. The dataset could be used for studying the interactions between motorists and cyclists on real-world roadways.
