Etcetera is a lively ensemble that sings and swings the standards. The group’s four-part vocals and stylized choreography of favorite American numbers are delivered with a dash of humor and a lot of pizzazz. Etcetera brings close harmonies, a mix of original and classic songs, and a unique blend of song and dance to the program for this concert, “Memories Are Made of This.” The singers in the group are Anne Bauman, Dick Bauman, Bob Collins, Pam Gibb, Martha Guest, Steve Mandell, Mary Ellen Weakley, Bill Weakley, and Linda Young. Joyce Reese is the accompanist. Look for live stream video on Gifts of Art Facebook.

Sponsored by: LAMBDA THETA ALPHA LATIN SORORITY, INC., BETA OMICRON CHAPTER

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico that commemorates the lives of those who have passed. It involves family and friends gathering together to pray for and celebrate the lives of their friends and family members. Traditionally, entire communities gather together to celebrate and create “altares” dedicated to their loved ones. These altars have decorations such as colorful paper, marigolds, candy, and the favorite food or beverages of the person who the altar is dedicated to.

History of Lambda Theta Alpha
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. (LTA) was founded in December of 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey as the first Latina sorority ever created to cater towards the needs of Latinas in higher education. As the Latino migration to the United States increased, so did the emergence of independent Latina women. With this growth, the need for support groups and outreach programs were at an all-time high; this was true for all women and especially for the low percentage of Latina women in higher education. The sorority’s focus is not only to support all women on a college campus but to integrate the organization into the social, political, and community service arena that other members of the Ann Arbor community are involved with. On January 23, 2000, eight Lovely Ladies promoted these values on the University of Michigan campus with the founding of Beta Omicron chapter. This allowed not only independent Latina women, but all Universal Women on campus to feel a sense of belonging and with that, achieve their highest potential. It would define a new role for the Universal woman—one with education, goals and vision in hopes of great success. Through educational and charitable activities, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. strives to accomplish these aspirations.

The phenomenon of Cuba’s ballet goes beyond the anomaly of a European, historically elitist dance form thriving in the communist state. Its provocative story lies in the first two decades of the 1959 Revolution when cultural production was linked to the moral and economic development of the new state. The state-funded Ballet Nacional de Cuba has supported the socialist ethos of the Revolution through boycotts, producing patriotic ballets, and initiating a Cuban style of ballet choreography and pedagogy taught throughout the island. As part of Andy’s current book project titled Bodies in Revolution, this talk is both a celebration and exploration of the capacities of performance both as tradition and intervention. Further incorporating his experiences as a researcher of theater in prisons in Brazil, Uruguay, and South Africa, Andy will reflect on his approaches to field-based research as well as the application of the arts in the classroom.

In Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement (published May 4, 2018), Naomi André draws on the experiences of performers and audiences to explore this music's resonance with today's listeners. Interacting with creators and performers, as well as with the works themselves, André reveals how black opera unearths suppressed truths. These truths provoke complex, if uncomfortable, reconsideration of racial, gender, sexual, and other oppressive ideologies. Opera, in turn, operates as a cultural and political force that employs an immense, transformative power to represent or even liberate.

In Dance Me a Song: Astaire, Balanchine, Kelly, and the American Film Musical (published June 27, 2018), Beth Genné traces Astaire's, Balanchine's, and Kelly's collaborations with composers and film-makers, crossing stylistic and class boundaries to develop a truly modern dance style and genres for the film musical. She contextualizes their work within the history of dance, music, and film and its roots in the diverse dance and music cultures of jazz age America's nation of immigrants. She demonstrates how concepts and visual-musical devices derived from dance-making would give entire films, both musical and non-musical, the rhythmic flow and feeling of dance.

Naomi André is Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s Studies, and the Associate Director for Faculty at the Residential College at the University of Michigan. Her earlier books, Voicing Gender: Castrati, Travesti, and the Second Woman in Early Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera (2006) and Blackness in Opera (2012, co-edited collection) focus on opera from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries and explore constructions of gender, race and identity.

Beth Genné is Professor of Dance History and Art History in the Dance Department and the Arts and Ideas concentration of the Residential College. She has written numerous book chapters on British ballet and dance in film (including Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli) and articles in such journals as Dance Research, Dance Chronicle, and Art Journal. Her first book, The Making of a Choreographer, was on the early training and choreographic development of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet.

Patricia Lorena Solórzano is a NYC-based dance artist originally from Michoacán, México. Her work is guided by improvisation, environmental psychology, walking, identity/memory, and connection to place; all enriched through drawing, film, and poetry. She received her BFA from Texas Christian University and MFA from the University of Michigan.

Efrén Cruz is an engineer doing research in artificial intelligence and its relationship to intelligent systems. Cruz’s recent work focuses on how automating decision-making in human communities reproduces previous biases of society, and how to enforce the creation and implementation of fair algorithms. Cruz’s research on systems that exhibit intelligence and information diffusion can be translated to a dance and improvisation setting, in which each dancer is an agent acting according to local rules and limited knowledge, and from where a bigger pattern emerges. Cruz started, together with Solórzano, the “Imprudent Cartography of Thought” project, in which borders are analyzed in terms of their abstract definition and corporeal/choreographic representation. Hence, economic inequalities, geopolitical boundaries, cultural biases, and psychological separation are brought together under topological terms, and analyzed according to the maps (ideological, epistemological, etc.) built on top of these landscapes. Cruz obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2017.

Since 2013, Joy McEwen has been Director of Auxiliaries and Golduster Dance Team with the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band. In this capacity, she is the director of the Golduster Dance Team and oversees the Golden Girl, Girl-In-Black, Silver Twins, the “All-American” Twirling Team and the Golden Silks Color Guard. She began her professional career in New York City at the Erick Hawkins School of Dance. Shortly after, she was invited to join the Hawkins Company, becoming the last member personally selected by Erick Hawkins before his death. Hawkins, a modern dance pioneer, was known as the “poet of modern dance” and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton. During her years with the company, she was able to tour venues such as the American Dance Festival in North Carolina and the Jacob’s Pillow Festival in Massachusetts, in addition to an annual season in New York City at the Joyce Theater.

Each Modern Lab session features a different guest artist teaching a master class and sections from their repertory. This panorama of the contemporary dance field is presented to broaden the students’ awareness of potential career possibilities. Each guest artist conducts a 30-minute technique class/warm-up and then teaches repertory that is performed by the class. In the final 15 minutes, faculty coordinator Bill De Young conducts a Q & A with each artist, discussing their career; their recommendations for transitioning from student to professional, and what they look for when they audition dancers for their projects.

This event supported in part by the EXCEL Lab.

Department of Dance
Choreography by guests Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Jennifer Harge, and faculty Bill DeYoung and Robin Wilson.

The Department of Dance’s annual concert, Complex Rhythms, features the re-staging of a noted twentieth-century masterpiece and three new creations. Shelter, created in 1988 by Urban Bush Women founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is an unsentimental commentary about homelessness and disenfranchisement. The New York Times wrote, “[Shelter] is so filled with compassion and anger that it becomes a powerful incantation against the evils of obliviousness and neglect.” Alumna Jennifer Harge, artistic director of Detroit’s Harge Dance Stories, is a performer who uses the body to tell stories. She was recently honored as a Visual Arts Fellow by Kresge Arts in Detroit. Harge’s work lies at the intersection of movement, performance art, African-American culture, and choreographies of protest. In celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centenary, faculty member Bill DeYoung sets a new work to Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs (1955). Robin Wilson will create a new work inspired by her upcoming trip to Cuba in May.

University of Michigan undergraduate students will have artwork on view expressing a scientific principle, concept, idea, process, or structure. The artwork ranges in media, including visual, literary, musical, video and performance-based art. A juried panel using criteria based on both scientific and artistic considerations will choose winning submissions. This is our fourth year of the exhibition, and we received a record number of submissions, so we hope you'll join us to view the work and give out the awards!

Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

The University of Michigan Department of Dance and Center For World Performance Studies, in collaboration with EXCEL and Arts In Color, is proud to present an evening with DanceWorks Chicago and the Anishinaabe Theatre Exchange. These two guest-residencies are overlapping in a night of movement and music improvisation, a DanceWorks Chicago performance, and a panel discussion regarding the topic of creating inclusive spaces in the arts.

DanceWorks Chicago is committed to building a foundation for the individual artistic growth of dancers and choreographers, providing a laboratory from which early career artists propel themselves and the art form to a new level through training, collaboration, mentorship, and performance. Led with integrity by Julie Nakagawa and Brendan P. Behan, DanceWorks Chicago fills a niche in the dance ecosystem investing in and shining a spotlight on the individual artists. Welcoming the public to engage with the DanceWorks family to build context around the work of art is both our pleasure and our duty as a good dance citizen.

The Anishnaabe Theatre Exchange is a collaborative project using theatre to activate networks with Native communities in the Great Lakes region, and involves University of Michigan students, faculty and staff with the Cultural Department of the Chippewa Sault Ste. Marie Tribe, Lake Superior State University and Bay Mills community members.

This event will be live-streamed here: https://smtd.umich.edu/performances-events/live-stream-hankinson/

Distinct from a policy body or counseling effort, FASAN works collaboratively with the SMTD community to deepen our collective understanding of issues surrounding sexual misconduct, especially the power dynamics that can lead to abuse and a culture of silence. It strives to create a climate of open communication, awareness, and responsiveness through community education events. FASAN volunteers commit to attending additional training, particularly about U-M policies and support resources, so that they can serve as informed consultants to their faculty and staff peers. Network members seek to create an ever more positive learning atmosphere at SMTD and to improve the professional climate of the performing arts field as a whole.

Living Poetry / Braving Joy: Naomi Long Madgett + Gabrielle Civil (March 19, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59388 59388-14737056@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Hopwood Awards Program

Naomi Long Madgett and Gabrielle Civil will join us in the Hopwood Room for a public conversation about living a literary life: What does it mean to be a black woman / poet today? How has the role or impact of poetry changed? What’s most vital in a poet’s education? How can we rethink and reclaim publishing? How we can bridge the divides between different schools of poetry? How can we reconcile the ivory tower and the community center? What can poetry do in our communities? What good books are we reading (songs are we singing, art are we seeing)? What do we love? How can we brave joy?

About the presenters:

Mentored by poet Langston Hughes, Naomi Long Madgett moved to Detroit in 1946. In the 1960s, she joined a group of African American writers who met regularly at Boone House, including Margaret Danner, Dudley Randall and Oliver LaGrone. Madgett was named Detroit poet laureate in 2001. In her poetry, influenced by the work of Emily Dickinson, John Keats, and Langston Hughes, Madgett often engages themes of civil rights and African American spirituality. She is the author of numerous collections of poetry, including One and the Many (1956), Exits and Entrances (1978), and Octavia and Other Poems (1988, reissued and expanded in 2002). In 1972, Madgett founded Lotus Press. She edited the anthology Adam of Ifé: Black Women in Praise of Black Men (1992), and her own work was included in the anthologies The Poetry of the Negro, 1746–1949 (1949, edited by Langston Hughes) and Ten: Anthology of Detroit Poets (1968, edited by Oliver LaGrone). A selection of her papers, documenting her poetry career and the history of Lotus Press, is held by the University of Michigan’s Special Collections Library.

Gabrielle Civil is a black feminist performance artist, originally from Detroit, MI. She has premiered fifty original solo and collaborative performance works around the world. Signature themes included race, body, art, politics, grief, and desire. Since 2014, she has been performing “Say My Name” (an action for 270 abducted Nigerian girls)” as an act of embodied remembering. She is the author of Swallow the Fish and Tourist Art (with Vladimir Cybil Charlier). She currently teaches Creative Writing and Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts. The aim of her work is to open up space.Experiments in Joy is forthcoming from CCM Press.

"Art as a way of change. Art as a way to motivate people and to move people to action." In the words of Marcus Ellsworth, from Uncle Sam and his 'We want you' campaign mobilizing young men to join the army to the Rosie the Riveter encouraging young women to get out and work, art has inspired action throughout our nation's history.

Join us at our Salon to discuss arts as a way of activism and to engage in rich discussion and an interactive talk by our guest speaker Deekah Rox, program director of Girls Rock Detroit and founder of The Cosmic Slop Music Festival.

Rox stumbled into rock at a young age and has since been creating music in a variety of genres. As a woman of color in Detroit, she still sees women facing issues in the progress of rock music and wants to create spaces to allow black female musicians to gather and feel the liberating power of rock.

TEDxUofM Salons are intimate, discussion-based explorations into specific ideas. They feature a speaker, a few TED talks, and animated discussions and activities to get you thinking about the world around us.

Queer Spiritual Drifting: Site-Specific Performance and Writing

Tuesday, April 2, 2019
6:00pm
Walgreen Drama Center, Room B207

How can drifting find space on the page? Let’s think together about connections between performance practice and writing, about embodiment and the page, and about widening audiencing procedures for performance. In 2017, Petra Kuppers travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands as part of an Olimpias disability performance exploration of queer spiritual asylum spaces. In this talk, Petra will discuss these performance actions and the resulting publication, a travelogue essay in Performance Research, ‘Queer Spiritual Drifting: Not at home in The Beguinage.’

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

This project  includes a Student Fellowship program to support U-M students with interests in dance and social justice.

This group engages in a cultural sharing between the African Diaspora and the African Continent, connecting those who were removed from their ancestral movement lineage to its longstanding history. South Asian Awareness Network, a U of M student organization, who will share excerpts of their new work, Bloom, which uses bharatnatyam, spoken word, and music to create an interdisciplinary performance on sexual assault awareness and self-empowerment of survivors in the South Asian community. (Adjacent space available for self-care for survivors during the performance.) “Regained,” a performance exploring dance as a form of healing, by U-M Dance majors Shannon Nulf and Victoria Briones.

The purpose of this town hall will be to discuss the findings and recommendations from the consensus report, The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches from the Same Tree, released Spring 2018 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The even will also facilitate discussions about strategies for the creation, evaluation, and sustainability of courses and programs that integrate across disciplines. The report represents a culmination of a two-year study conducted by a committee of National Academies members including scientists, engineers, health professionals, humanists, artists, and industry leaders. The report argues that integrating the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine results in positive learning outcomes that will help students successfully enter the workforce, enrich their lives, and help them become active and informed citizens. Importantly, a range of positive educational outcomes resulted from these methods, including improved written and oral communication skills, teamwork skills, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Community members from Detroit, along with U-M faculty and students, are joining forces to create Belle Isle and Beyond, an innovative site dance performance that celebrates the synergies between Detroit’s natural and built environments. The family-friendly 30-minute outdoor performance will begin at the Belle Isle Nature Center and environs, rain or shine.

The Belle Isle and Beyond performance grows out of a series of workshops in dance, visual art, and music for Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences middle school students. Held at the Belle Isle Nature Center and at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences in February-April, the workshops cultivated a sensory engagement with Belle Isle in order to deepen understandings of Detroit’s ecosystems and the ongoing restoration efforts taking place in the Detroit River watershed.

Inspired by the creative investigations of the young students, Belle Isle and Beyond features choreographers and dancers from Detroit’s Big Red Wall Dance Company, whose artistic director is Erika Stowall, and Ann Arbor Dance Works, the resident dance company of the University of Michigan Department of Dance. The artistic director for Ann Arbor Dance Works and for Belle Isle and Beyond is Jessica Fogel, a professor of Dance at U-M.

Music for the performance is composed by Michael Gurevich, associate professor of Performing Arts Technology at U-M, and by Tessa Fornari, a U-M Performing Arts Technology student majoring in sound engineering. Their ambient electronic score incorporates sounds of Belle Isle, including sounds recorded by the DAAS middle school students and underwater recordings of the Detroit River.

The event also features an exhibit of art collages created by the DAAS middle school students in a workshop led by U-M School for Environment and Sustainability aquatic ecologist and visual artist Dr. Sara Adlerstein, and Belle Isle Nature Center education specialist David Anthony.

Sponsored by Michigan MCubed 3.0; University of Michigan Edward Ginsberg Center; University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Detroit Zoological Society and Belle Isle Nature Center.

Warren & Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and standards from many genres they have arranged in a personal style, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass, while Grant Flick plays violin, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS), a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.

After discovering their shared musical interests, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including The Leafless and Westbound Situation, both comprised of former AMS participants. Jacob and Grant attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, where they spend much of their time arranging, composing and performing together. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give them a unique and compelling musical narrative. Find them on Facebook.

Arts at Michigan is for enthusiastic and friendly students who have an interest in the arts that they want to share! Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve as the bridge between the arts and the U-M student body. As an Arts Ambassador you'll help promote arts events and activities, learn about local arts organizations, meet local artists, and have a small programming budget to organize things like film screenings, craft nights, gallery walks, etc. Learn more about what it means to be an Arts Ambassador at http://artsatmichigan.umich.edu/programs/ambassadors/
