EVERYONE’S INVITED.

Culture. Music. Festivities. Tea. Food. Dance.

Grab your cultural clothes, grab your friends, and join cultural Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Pakistani, Persian, Syrian, and Yemeni student organizations for a night of cultural celebration and empowerment. A chance for our diverse cultures - Desi, Non-Desi, Middle-Eastern, Non-Middle Eastern - to unite over a common struggle.

What all ten of these countries share are serious sanitation issues. Many have suffered as a result of these unsafe conditions, and unfortunately, media has portrayed them as victims from political warfare rather than human beings with rich, deep cultural ties and appreciation for their country. As a way to honor and showcase this love for the countries, Paani is bringing together everyone together to rediscover their cultural roots!

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Writing in her own genre, Karissa Bone introduces music with the bop-factor of Pop, the soul of R&B, and the unexpected element of pinpointed introspective lyrics. Hailing from Saginaw, MI, her style is influenced by Motown, Classic Rock, and everything in life that goes sideways. Her airy, yet powerful voice melts together with her soul-twisting lyrics to make every song a memorable journey. Whether she’s with a full band, string section, at a grand piano, or playing solo with her electric guitar, Bone’s live shows are full of energy and belonging. With short comedic breaks, she seamlessly covers topics from heartbreak to nostalgia, to the modern age of technology. Her artistry truly shows through– when she sings, you stop and listen.

In 2019, while studying at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Bone paid her dues in Ann Arbor, where she's performed at the famed Blind Pig, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and the Canterbury House. She currently studies songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Performances featuring new work by the 2019-20 Daring Dances Student Fellows: Ambiance Dance, Arabesque Dance Troupe, Iraqi Student Association, and the Queer Arts Collective. Centered in the southeastern region of Michigan, Daring Dances embraces how dance, through art-making and spectatorship, invites us into difficult conversations—conversations among those with whom we share identities and values and conversations across differences. As racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia proliferate in public space and public policy in our current moment, Daring Dances supports emerging new work by choreographers based in the Midwest, encouraging students at the University of Michigan making dance related to social justice, and conducting “Experiments in Coalition,” community engagement work that brings together communities around dance performance making and viewing.

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Meleko Mokgosi's monumental installation Pan-African Pulp presents a complex and multi-layered reflection on histories of Pan-Africanism, Black Consciousness, and Southern African resistance movements. Made up of five parts, it engages with its audience in various ways, encouraging visitors to access this rich history through the medium of history painting, through popular posters, through comic books, academic literature or stories written in Mokgosi's mother tongue - Setswana. Multiple interpretations and readings are not only possible but are explicitly encouraged by the artist, whose work is saturated with archival research, theory and deep thinking about the history of artmaking and the powerful role artworks have (and continue to have) as sites of resistance and activism.

Taking Pan-African Pulp as their starting point, five different speakers from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University will bring their unique points of view to the table, offering up new and perhaps unexpected interpretations, exploring how one artwork may act as a prism for diverse readings.

The program will take place in the Mokgosi installation on the first floor between the UMMA Shop and Cafe.  Speakers include:

Bénédicte Boisseron, from the U-M Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), will respond to the mural examining the complexity of blackness;

Julian Chambliss, Professor of English, Val Berryman Curator of History, MSU Museum, on the historical posters from internationalist and Pan-African movements from around the world;

Anita Gonzalez, from the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance, the stories from Setswana oral tradition.

Annette Joseph-Gabriel, from the U-M Department for Romance Languages and Literatures, the 1969 Algiers Pan-African manifesto annotated by the artist;

Randall Scott, from the MSU Comic Art Collection, the large-scale panels inspired by African photo novels of the 1960s and ’70s.

The discussion will be moderated by Laura De Becker, UMMA’s Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art.

This program is organized in partnership with the U-M African Studies Center.

Lead support is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan African Studies Center and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.

Jury Duty is a jazz quartet consisting of U-M School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD) sophomores Eric Banitt, Mitchell Dangler, Reuben Stump, and Ian Thompson. The group began playing together in preparation for their annual performance examinations in the jazz department. These examinations are called "juries," birthing the group's name. After adequately preparing for their freshman year jury, Jury Duty began writing and performing their original compositions in dorm rooms, houses, and other venues around Ann Arbor.

A yooper hailing from Marquette, Michigan, Eric Banitt is a jazz piano major. With his roots in classical music, Eric also plays the trumpet and violin. Mitch Dangler is a sophomore from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mitch plays the drum-set, and if you’re lucky he’ll whip out a couple of spoons. Reuben Stump is from Lansing, Michigan, and has been playing the bass for over 4 years. Reuben grew up performing and listening to the Great American Songbook. Ian Thompson is from Troy, Michigan and has been playing guitar for 5 years. Ian's roots are in classical and rock music, having studied the piano and trumpet before switching to guitar.

[CANCELLED]. CSEAS Lecture Series. Islamizing a Sacred Hindu-Javanese Text: The Story of Jimat Kalimasada in Javanese Wayang Puppet Play (April 3, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70971 70971-17760244@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 3, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Sumarsam, Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music, Wesleyan University

Before the arrival of Islam, Javanese people had lived in Hindu–Javanese hybrid culture. The Islamization of Java has given rise to not only the expansion of different groups of people with diverse syncretistic religion and culture, but also rich variations in the content and context of Java-Islamic cultural performance genres and ideologies. Believing in the performing arts as one of the major venues for the blending of beliefs and practices, my presentation discusses a particular wayang story, Jimat Kalimasada, to show the complex processes of religious and cultural transformation from Hindu-Javanese to Islam-Javanese world of view.

Sumarsam has played Javanese gamelan since childhood. He is also a keen amateur dhalang (puppeteer) of wayang puppet play. He holds a BA degree from Akademi Seni Karawitan Indonesia, MA from Wesleyan, and PhD from Cornell. Currently holding the status of Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music, he has taught at Wesleyan since 1972. His research on the history, theory, and performance practice of gamelan and wayang, and on Indonesia-Western encounter theme has resulted the publication of numerous articles and two books: Gamelan: Cultural Interaction and Musical Development in Central Java (1995) and Javanese Gamelan and the West (2013).

Sumarsam's recent research focuses on the intersections between religion and performing arts, examining discourses of transculturalism, the performing arts, and Islam among the Javanese. He is the recipient of a number of fellowship grants and awards, including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies fellowship (2016-17), Indonesian Bintang Satyalencana Cultural Award (2017), the International Gamelan Festival Literacy Award (2018), and Yale Institute of Sacred Music Fellowship (2019-20). He was recently named the 2018 honorary membership of the Society for Ethnomusicology.

Referred to as part of ‘Hallyu’ (한류), or the ‘Korean Wave,’ K-pop captivated audiences of Asia and traveled the world into the United States, including our community in Ann Arbor.

The Moradokmai Theatre Community of Thailand

A dramatization of the story of Nonthok, one of the most beloved episodes from the Thai epic, the Ramakien. Nonthok serves as foot-washer to the celestial angels, who tease him about his duties. He gets a magic finger from the higher God to protect himself, but ends up misusing it. The moral of the story: if everyone does their duty, the world will be safe and sound.

The Moradokmai Theatre Community is affiliated with a home school by the same name; the group is touring the U.S. to raise awareness of the needs of the elderly and disabled in its community.

Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies; cosponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Culture.

In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between their passions and their life choices. Participants will receive a video to be viewed prior to the workshop, which will serve as the initial prompt for the work. Using writing and movement, participants are invited to develop their own strategies for responding to the New Now.

Omi Osun Joni L. Jones’ work is committed to exploring strategies for promoting healthy communities through personal Joy. She is an artist/scholar/facilitator who employs Black Feminist aesthetics in her performance work, her pedagogy, and her consulting. She has performed at The New Black Fest (NYC), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), and Links Hall (Chicago), and has served as a workplace facilitator with Thousand Currents (Oakland), NoVo Foundation (NYC), and Soladaire (Bay Area). Her dramaturgical work includes August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean and Shay Youngblood’s Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery—both under the direction of Daniel Alexander Jones, as well as Sharon Bridgforth’s conflama under the direction of Laurie Carlos. Her scholarship has appeared in The Drama Review, Obsidian, and Theatre Journal as well as solo/black/woman and Blacktino Queer Performance. Her most recent book is Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Àṣẹ, and the Power for the Present Moment (Ohio State University Press). She is Professor Emerita from the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

In this new virtual series, performers and scholars reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face in this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

When Ken Fischer retired after 30 years as president of the University Musical Society in 2017, many of his friends and colleagues repeatedly told him, “Ken, you should write a book! You have so many great stories.”

Ken took that advice, and we’re delighted to announce that Everybody In, Nobody Out: Inspiring Community at Michigan’s University Musical Society is now available from University of Michigan Press, with a wonderful foreword by Wynton Marsalis.

During this virtual book launch, John U. Bacon, Ann Arbor author, speaker, tv and radio commentator, and longtime friend of Ken’s, will interview Ken about his book, highlighting some of the wonderful stories Ken shares from his three decades at UMS and a lifetime in the arts.

This book launch is co-presented by Literati Bookstore and University of Michigan Press Great Lakes.

In November 2018, the Contemporary Directions Ensemble, directed by Oriol Sans, performed a foxtrot called “The Most Beautiful Time of Life” (Die schönste Zeit des Lebens) to a sold- out audience at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Audience-goers were treated to a rare glimpse of this piece as it had last been performed – more than 75 years ago in a far different setting. Based on a manuscript Patricia Hall researched at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, this piece was arranged and copied by concentration camp prisoners and had not been performed since 1942 or 1943.

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance created a video highlighting the project and its significance, garnering U-M a Michigan Emmy in 2019. Patricia gave interviews on National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the BBC, and an Associated Press story highlighting this project appeared in Detroit Free Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and more than 1100 other news outlets in 22 countries.

During her talk, Instructor Patricia Hall will be describing the process of preparing this concert—from manuscript to performance. She will also talk about her most recent work in the Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

This study group will he held on September 25.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: "Cold War Counterpublics and the Ghosts of Pan-Asianism: The Japanese Matsuyama Ballet’s 1958 White-Haired Girl Tour in China" (September 29, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76122 76122-19663558@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar.

In 1958, the Matsuyama Ballet of Japan toured the first ever ballet adaptation of the classic Chinese land reform opera "The White-Haired Girl" in China. Examining Chinese-language sources such as newspaper and magazine reviews and rare original programs held in the University of Michigan Asia Library's Chinese Dance Collection, Professor Wilcox reconstructs the circulation and reception of this work in China, arguing that the production represented an attempt to create a leftist Sino-Japanese counter-public at a time of Cold War tensions between the two countries. She suggests that the Japanese ballet dancers' cross-ethnic performances of Chinese characters critically reconfigured pre-1945 Japanese imperialist discourses of pan-Asianism, leading them to be interpreted as acts of inter-ethnic solidarity in the context of 1950s Asian internationalism.

Emily Wilcox is Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She is the author of "Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy" (University of California Press, 2019, winner of the de la Torre Bueno Prize from the Dance Studies Association) and co-editor of "Corporeal Politics: Dancing East Asia" (University of Michigan Press, 2020). Her articles, in English and Chinese, have appeared in "China Perspectives," "Inter-Asia Cultural Studies," "The Journal of Asian Studies," positions: asia critique, "TDR: The Drama Review," "Asian Theatre Journal," "The Journal of the Beijing Dance Academy," "Dance Review," and other venues.

"In times of turmoil and transformation—a locked-down present and an uncertain future—how do artists share wisdom and experience? How do they foster growth? As a vocalist singing in multiples languages, as a composer straddling genres and styles, as a musician playing instruments whose histories span continents and centuries, and as a dancer and writer of compelling grace and power, Jen Shyu transforms wisdom from masters and stories gathered from communities around the world into fresh and original expressions. Her work off the bandstand focuses on fighting inequity and helping create new mentorship networks" (Larry Blumenfeld). During this session, Shyu will also perform new works composed during the lockdown period that are centered around quarantine as well as the Black Lives Matter movement.

Jen Shyu ("Shyu" pronounced "Shoe" in English, Chinese name: 徐秋雁, Pinyin: Xúqiūyàn) is a groundbreaking, multilingual vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, 2019 United States Artists Fellow, 2016 Doris Duke Artist, and was voted 2017 Downbeat Critics Poll Rising Star Female Vocalist. Born in Peoria, Illinois, to Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrant parents, Shyu is widely regarded for her virtuosic singing and riveting stage presence, carving out her own beyond-category space in the art world. She has performed with or sung the music of such musical innovators as Nicole Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, Bobby Previte, Chris Potter, Michael Formanek and David Binney. Shyu has performed her own music on prestigious world stages such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rubin Museum of Art, Ojai Festival, Ringling International Arts Festival, Asia Society, Roulette, Blue Note, Bimhuis, Salihara Theater, National Gugak Center, National Theater of Korea and at festivals worldwide.

A Stanford University graduate in opera with classical violin and ballet training, Shyu had already won many piano competitions and performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto (3rd mvmt.) with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra by the age of 13. She speaks 10 languages and has studied traditional music and dance in Cuba, Taiwan, Brazil, China, South Korea, East Timor and Indonesia, conducting extensive research which culminated in her 2014 stage production Solo Rites: Seven Breaths, directed by renowned Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho.

Shyu has won commissions and support from NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, MAP Fund, US-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship from Japan-US Friendship Commission and National Endowment for the Arts, Jerome Foundation, Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works, Exploring the Metropolis, New Music USA, Jazz Gallery, and Roulette, as well as fellowships from the Fulbright Scholar Program, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Asian Cultural Council, Hermitage Artist Retreat, Yaddo, MacDowell Colony, Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Korean Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Tourism.

Shyu has produced seven albums as a leader, including the first female-led and vocalist-led album Pi Recordings has released, Synastry (Pi 2011), with co-bandleader and bassist Mark Dresser. Her critically acclaimed Sounds and Cries of the World (Pi 2015) landed on many best-of-2015 lists, including those of The New York Times, The Nation, and NPR. Her latest album Song of Silver Geese (Pi 2017) is receiving rave reviews and was also included on The New York Times’ Best Albums of 2017.

In the new virtual series, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT, PERFORMING THE MOMENT, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists, register for these events, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.

In this session, Cardona Otero will depart from his most recent performance art piece, Taxonomía of a Spicy Espécimen, to engage in a conversation about his work in the arts and in education. In Cardona’s words: “I’m a work in progress. As well, more and more I am understanding my performative art and pedagogy as works in progress. I am affected by this pandemic racism, this antiblackness, this sexism, and this state of white supremacy; and this infection affects what and how I craft and enact.”

Javier Cardona Otero is a performing artist, critical educator, and facilitator of art experiences as education. His artistic scholarship, which has been presented throughout the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States, seeks to critically investigate sociocultural capitals particularly regarded to issues of race, gender, and the environment. His work is interdisciplinary and intersectional, focusing on art-making as research and embodied artwork as pedagogy. Currently, Javier is a Curriculum and Instruction PhD student in the Arts Education Program at Indiana University-Bloomington.

In this new virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.
