Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series and the Institute for the Humanities present: Legendary Drag Queens: Gigi’s Meets Aunt Charlie’s: A Tale of Drag Scenes & Queens (January 13, 2022 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89929 89929-21666524@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 13, 2022 5:30pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

.

This program presents a rare coming together of six legendary Drag Queens from two notoriously fabulous nightclubs in the gritty epicenters of Detroit and San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.

Inspired by artist James Hosking’s project Beautiful by Night, on view at Institute for the Humanities Gallery, following three San Francisco Drag Artists over the course of one night at Aunt Charlie’s, the last gay bar in the famed San Francisco Tenderloin district, an area in the process of being completely re-defined by gentrification and the dot-com takeover.

This series event brings the San Francisco Aunt Charlie’s Queens together with Detroit’s own reigning Queens from Gigi’s Cabaret, home of the longest running drag pageant in the United States. Appearing from Detroit are Maxi Chanel (House of Chanel), Nickki Stevens, and Lady T Tempest. Hailing from San Francisco are Olivia Hart and Donna Personna. The six artists come together to discuss the history of their legacies and artform, the role of lineage and queer community building, and how drag has changed the world through activism, glamour, and celebratory inclusion.

The evening will be hosted by Ben Johnson, currently the Director of Performing Arts for the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, whose position tasks him with developing programs of cultural exchange among other things. Previously he was the Director of Education and Audience Development at the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan (1996−2008). While in Michigan, he was steeped in Detroit’s history and lore, and it is through this lens which he centers drag heritage and history as an important and unique cultural contribution to the vitality of Michigan performing arts history, aligning it with the equally important and vital history of Aunt Charlies, the last remaining stronghold of queer and trans-centered cultural space in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.

Co-presented by the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, this program celebrates the exhibition opening of photographer and filmmaker James Hosking’s multimedia project, Beautiful by Night, an examination of class, labor, and identity among aging drag performers in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, featuring the three San Francisco Queens presented here.

James Hosking supports his subjects by sharing their stories and hopes to work towards ironclad non-discrimination laws protecting employment and housing, and the more truthful representation of this community in both news and entertainment.

Directly following the program, join us for an opening reception at Institute for the Humanities Gallery and meet the artists.

This event is in-person at the Michigan Theater. Learn more about COVID-19 protocols for Penny Stamps Speaker Series events.

This program is organized and presented by The Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series and the Institute for Humanities, with support from UMMA in conjunction with the exhibition Oh honey...A queer reading of UMMA's collection (on view through February 20, 2022).

Lead support for the exhibition Oh honey... is provided by Alan Hergott and Curt Shepard and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

Reparations is a topic that stirs up a lot of opinions on what the United States owes the descendants of enslaved Africans. Does it owe land? Money? Free college? Does it owe anything at all? Join us for a panel discussion as we explore the varying concepts of what is owed and what reparations might look like as we discuss the Crafting Democratic Futures project. Housed in the U-M Center for Social Solutions, Crafting Democratic Futures aims to tackle the complex histories surrounding race by working with colleges and universities around the country to develop suggestions for research-informed, community-engaged racial reparations solutions.

Detroit Financial Well-Being Innovation Challenge Launch (February 2, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91243 91243-21677515@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 2, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Poverty Solutions

The Detroit Financial Well-being Innovation Challenge is a multi-year, $2M+ initiative supported by United Way for Southeastern Michigan to provide funding and support to cross-sector organizations to think big, collaborate, plan, pilot, and scale new ideas to improve Detroiters’ financial lives.

During the virtual launch event, you'll learn more about how to participate in the Challenge, and have the opportunity to engage in interactive idea-sharing activities. The event is open to potential applicant organizations, stakeholders, and members of the public.

The Challenge builds off University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions’ research report, The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?. Report findings showed that Detroit residents face deep and persistent financial disadvantages even as compared to residents of peer cities – and that these disadvantages are the result of systemic inequities.

For more information about this research and the Innovation Challenge made possible with support from JPMorganChase, General Motors, and Comerica, visit https://unitedwaysem.org/fwb

Common Chords is a 501c3 educational organization dedicated to using music and the arts to tear down the walls that divide us.
Co-founders Rev. Robert Jones and Matt Watroba are award winning performers and creative collaborators. They are musical partners, educators and have been friends for thirty-five years. Robert and Matt use traditional and original music and stories to emphasize the importance of understanding and valuing the perspective of every person. Their programs center around learning to question the answers that each of us hold as truth.
Matt Watroba is a singer/songwriter, native Detroiter, song leader with many connections to Ann Arbor, including numerous shows at The Ark and as a song leader at Ann Arbor Senior Center. He is known as the voice of folk music in Michigan through his former work at WDET and the syndicated Folk Alley radio program. He is currently producer and host of WKAR’s Folks Like Us radio program on Sunday evenings. He was inducted into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame in 2019.
Rev. Robert Jones, Sr. is a native Detroiter and an inspirational storyteller and musician celebrating the history, humor and power of American Roots music. His deep love for traditional African American and American traditional music is shared in live performances that interweave timeless stories with original and traditional songs.
For more than thirty years Robert has entertained and educated audiences of all ages. At the heart of his message is the belief that our cultural diversity tells a story that should celebrate, not just tolerate.

We consider new buildings and developments that are revolutionizing Detroit and its neighborhoods, from Bedrock’s ultra-contemporary City Modern residential complex north of Comerica Park to a rash of new projects in Corktown in anticipation of Ford’s arrival at the train station, to The Belt, an uber-hip, revitalized alleyway crowded with art, restaurants, and bars – a nice example of innovative urbanism.

Our speaker, Michael H. Hodges, longtime Detroit News fine-arts writer, just retired after 30 years with the paper. He is the author of two books – “Building the Modern World: Albert Kahn in Detroit” and “Michigan’s Historic Railroad Stations”, both from Wayne State University Press. His work has also appeared in Salon, the New York Times, Village Voice, Spy, and The Nation. Hodges grew up on a dairy farm in Rochester Hills and lives in Ann Arbor.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Detroit River Story Lab: Community Narratives and Carbon Economies
Rebecca Hardin and David Porter, University of Michigan

Monday, Mar. 28, Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
This event will be held via Zoom.

Abstract:
U-M's Detroit River Story Lab is comprised of interdisciplinary faculty, partnering with a wide array of Michigan based organizations in efforts to reconnect residents with the Detroit River. The Story Lab uses the term “narrative infrastructure” to refer both to the fabric of shared stories that binds a given community together and the pipelines and platforms by which these stories are circulated and elevated. For decades, the needs of Detroit riverside communities’ have been framed in terms of physical infrastructure (transportation, utilities, etc). Today, community leaders and scholars alike have recognized how the arts, civic life, local journalism, and public history are also critical to social cohesion and vitality. Alongside Detroit's legacies of inequity due to pollution, the privatization of shorelands, the bulldozing of neighborhoods, and mass-incarceration, has come the loss of sustaining stories about the Detroit River--or resident’s stories for framing sustainability for the city's and region's future. Learning from local residents who do (or who seek to) engage with its waters, the Story Lab partnership seeks to strengthen the narrative infrastructure of the Detroit River corridor with respect to its indigenous sacred sites, roles in the Underground Railroad, and long histories of water activism, among other themes. We work together through independent media, software platforms, innovative secondary and higher education curricula, and interpretive programing in public spaces. We are also developing youth participatory research trainings in river heritage, ecosystem regeneration, carbon accounting and equitable landscape design, to encourage direct personal ties with the river as well as community identification and advocacy along the corridor. Drawing from pathbreaking recent scholarship on Detroit's history and collaborative sustainability science, we work toward possible narrative transformation from the one and only "Motor City” to a preeminent "River City" worthy of emulation as an international and intercultural confluence of innovations in climate change adaptation, active learning and environmental and social justice.

Women in Tech: Closing the Gap

Wednesday March 30, 4:00-5:30pm via Zoom.

Women are obtaining degrees in STEM but struggle joining and staying in the tech industry. Women make up 20% of engineering graduates, yet only 11% of practicing engineers are women. Nearly 40% of women who earn engineering degrees quit or never enter the profession. The primary reasons women are underrepresented in technology are lack of mentors; lack of female role models in the field; gender bias in the workplace; unequal growth opportunities compared to men; and unequal pay for the same positions. In 2018, 53% of women quit their STEM jobs because of these scenarios. Despite the obvious obstacles that women in technology face, their contributions have been exemplary. Join our panel of innovative Women in Technology as they discuss the importance of closing the gender gap in STEM; and the importance of increasing the female population in the field

More than half a century ago, the Motown sound had its roots in Detroit, the “Motor City.” How did Motown music start and why? What defines Motown music? What are the major characteristics of Motown? What is its relationship to soul music? Professor Clague will discuss the rich history of Motown music and the impact it had on other music genres. Join Professor Clague for a trip down memory lane to hear What’s Going On?

Mark Clague is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs; Director, U-M Gershwin Initiative; Co-Editor-In-Chief, MUSA; Associate Professor of Musicology and Entrepreneurship and Leadership at the University of Michigan. He researches music-making in the United States, with recent projects focusing on the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the music of George and Ira Gershwin. His interests center on questions of how music forges and shapes social relationships in such subjects as American orchestras as institutions, critical editing, the art of sound as simultaneously a transcendent emotional expression and an everyday tool for living.

Detroit has made significant contributions to jazz music since the early years of the 20th Century, including the contemporary era. However, Detroit is best known for contributing to the development of the bebop style and nurturing a large number of jazz performers who emerged in the 1950s and 1960s to national and international prominence. In this presentation the primary focus will be on some of those performers and the nature of their contributions.

Vincent Chandler is a native Detroiter. He earned two degrees at the University of Michigan: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music and a Master of Music in Improvisation. He was a 2020 Kresge Artist Fellow. He is now an Assistant Professor in Jazz Studies and Jazz Trombone at Wayne State University. He has studied and/or performed with such Detroit jazz artists as Marcus Belgrave, James Carter, Geri Allen and Rodney Whitaker, as well as here and abroad with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove and Ravi Coltrane. He is a notable sideman, composer/arranger, scat singer and bandleader.

This is the last lecture of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Music in Detroit and Michigan: The Legend Continues. A new lecture series will start April 14, 2022. Masimba Hwati works across sculpture, sound, performance, video, and text. His recent sound sculpture, Ngoromera, is featured in the new installation of UMMA’s African Art collection, We Write to You About Africa. In this talk, Hwati will reflect on the ways in which the socio-political conditions he encounters shape his creative process with stories from Harare, Detroit, South Carolina, Florida, Weimar, and Vienna. He will also explore the connections that intersect sculpture, sound, performance and ritual in his work and how these connections develop and inform each other.

Masimba Hwati is interested in the places where sculpture, sound, and performance meet. His interdisciplinary artistic practice explores various forms and rituals of cultural resistance. Born in Harare, a restless place of precarity and constant flux, Hwati describes his practice as an exploration of the nature of sound and its connection to power negotiation and resistance narratives in post-colonial contexts.

Following his talk, please join Hwati in the gallery for a performance of Ngoromera during Feel Good Friday at UMMA.

Masimba Hwati holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is a Ph.D. in Art practice, candidate at the Academy of Fine Art Vienna. He is a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture alumn class of 2019. He studied and taught sculpture at Harare Polytechnic Art school. Pan-African Pulp: A Commission by Meleko Mokgosi (May 1, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64426 64426-16348358@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, May 1, 2022 9:00am

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

In Pan-African Pulp, Botswana-born artist Meleko Mokgosi explores the history of Pan-Africanism, the global movement to unite ethnic groups of sub-Saharan African descent. His Vertical Gallery installation, which inaugurates a new biennial commission program at UMMA, features large-scale panels inspired by African photo novels of the 1960s and ’70s, a mural examining the complexity of blackness, posters from Pan-African movements from around the world, including those founded in Detroit and Africa in the 1960s, and stories from Setswana literature. Pan-African Pulp vividly connects to Detroit’s deep history of activism, where organizations such as Black Nation of Islam, The Republic of New Afrika, Shrine of the Black Madonna (Black Christian Nationalism), Pan-African Congress, and United Negro Improvement Association were founded. The renewed urgency for diversity and civil rights in Detroit, and the country as a whole, heightens the relevance of Mokgosi’s project and reveals the deep connections between these historical movements and those developing today.

Lead support is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan African Studies Center and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.
