Joan Belgrave is Detroit’s most noted jazz singer. Her musical career began at age 3 when her parents would take her to house parties and put her up on a soapbox to sing with adult singers. Belgrave has performed at historic venues like Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Jazz Cafe at The Music Hall, Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, Fillmore Theatre, Orchestra Hall and Detroit Opera House. She has produced seven albums – five with her late husband, legendary Jazz trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave. She has also recorded tributes to Billie Holliday, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. She will be joined for this concert by her trio.

U-M MLK Symposium Cross-Campus Planning Meeting (March 8, 2018 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/44869 44869-9992128@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 8, 2018 11:45am
Location: Trotter Multicultural Center
Organized By: Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI)

YOU’RE INVITED!

The University of Michigan Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium is proudly one of the largest commemoration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. across the country. The symposium consists of a keynote memorial lecture public event the morning of the MLK holiday (January 15) [open to the public, not ticketed]. The efforts to determine the symposium theme, the artwork for the event booklet, and speakers for the symposium are determined from a dedicated group of students, faculty, staff and administrators across campus.

We welcome any interested individuals who are passionate about social justice, civil and human rights, and UM’s role in creating a dynamic program that honors Dr. King to attend our monthly meetings. They are informal, please attend when you would like. Each meeting focuses on finalizing a piece of the symposium events, sharing department or org events, and always reflecting on current affairs, with an emphasis on mindfulness and community.

STUDENTS! (undergrad, grad, professional, etc) We need your voice at the table!

More information about putting your event in the booklet or online, the history of speakers, and other ways to get involved, please visit mlksymposium.umich.edu hosted and sponsored by the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI).

Please email mlksymposiuminfo@umich.edu if you plan on attending an upcoming meeting, so that we may have an accurate food count.

The theme for the 2018 Symposium is The Fierce Urgency of Now. This theme calls us to claim ownership of the challenges we face and not leave it for future generations to address. Amidst technological advancements and increased global connections, much work still needs to be done to heal the wounds of our past, and resolve the injustices of our present. The Fierce Urgency of Now compels us to not only act, but to also acknowledge that the absence of action and the continuation of silence, serves to bring us deeper into the shadows of division.

John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories, religious spaces, government facilities, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together, all at once, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. LEGACIES OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: LOOKING BACK AND MOVING FORWARD (March 22, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51161 51161-12007295@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 22, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

In a collaboration with the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University and Louise Seamster at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, this Detroit panel discussion will consider some of the recent history of Emergency Management in Michigan.

Since the 1980s, Michigan has been the national epicenter of “emergency management”—a project that allows state governors to declare “financial emergencies” in cities and thereby replace democratically elected officials with appointed emergency financial managers. In the three decades that emergency management has unfolded in Michigan, its cities have seen the privatization of public institutions, disinvestment in public infrastructures, and other acts of violence against the public sphere. Extending long histories of the extraction of labor, land, and wealth from communities of color in the United States, emergency management has been focused on black majority cities; in the last 10 years, around 52% of Michigan’s African-American residents have been disenfranchised by emergency management as compared to 3% of white Michiganders.

On December 14, 2017, Governor Rick Snyder announced that there were, at the moment, no emergency managers governing any of Michigan’s cities. That announcement prompts questions about the ongoing consequences and legacies of emergency management—a project that has become dormant rather than invalidated. What has the impact of emergency management been on Michigan’s cities? What lessons should be learned from these experiences? How can these lessons inform resistance in other spaces of threatened or ongoing dedemocratization?

Reception: 5:00pm

Panel Discussion: 6:00pm
Mark Fancher, Racial Justice Project, ACLU of Michigan
Catherine Coleman Flowers: Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise
Shea Howell, The James and Grace Lee Boggs Center
Helen Moore, Keep the Vote
Louise Seamster, The University of Tennessee Knoxville
Moderated by: Andrew Herscher, The University of Michigan

On Friday, March 23rd, a related workshop will be convened in Ann Arbor. This conversation will take up some of the issues presented on Thursday, considering Emergency Management as not only a local but also a national project, which engages with systems of infrastructure, government, and culture at multiple scales.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) of 1968. The FHA prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, families with children and national origin, when an individual or family tries to buy, rent, lease, sell or finance a home.

Join us for a conversation with Margaret Brown, Executive Director at the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit, Shannon Ackenhausen, Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan and Roshanak Mehdipanah, Assistant Professor at the School of Public Health. They will share the historical events leadings up to the passing of the FHA, an overview of the FHA and the different enforcement strategies used to address housing discrimination cases today both in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Dewey Lecture Series: “Detroit Collaborative Design Center: Amplifying the Diminished Voice of Detroit's Urban Landscape” (April 6, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/50340 50340-11713022@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 6, 2018 9:00am
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

The Ginsberg Dewey Lecture highlights the work of a scholar-activist whose research and civic engagement are intertwined and recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s, and later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us, and, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.

Keynote will be given by Charles Cross, ASLA, the Senior Landscape Designer at the Detroit Collaborative Design Center; as well as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. He maintains a firm belief that underserved communities deserve good design, and therefore should be the patrons of the process -not just the consumers of the end product.

There will also be highlights from University of Michigan community engaged research projects.

U-M MLK Symposium Cross-Campus Planning Meeting (May 10, 2018 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/44869 44869-9992130@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 10, 2018 11:45am

In this exhibit, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters, from both collage and found object assemblage, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures, who represent history, identity, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing, to jewelry, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Human beings are political animals, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later, we are still political animals, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture.

This exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy, Olynthos in Greece, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today?
