U-M MLK Symposium Cross-Campus Planning Meeting (May 10, 2018 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/44869 44869-9992130@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 10, 2018 11:45am
Location: Trotter Multicultural Center
Organized By: Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI)

YOU’RE INVITED!

The University of Michigan Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium is proudly one of the largest commemoration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. across the country. The symposium consists of a keynote memorial lecture public event the morning of the MLK holiday (January 15) [open to the public, not ticketed]. The efforts to determine the symposium theme, the artwork for the event booklet, and speakers for the symposium are determined from a dedicated group of students, faculty, staff and administrators across campus.

We welcome any interested individuals who are passionate about social justice, civil and human rights, and UM’s role in creating a dynamic program that honors Dr. King to attend our monthly meetings. They are informal, please attend when you would like. Each meeting focuses on finalizing a piece of the symposium events, sharing department or org events, and always reflecting on current affairs, with an emphasis on mindfulness and community.

STUDENTS! (undergrad, grad, professional, etc) We need your voice at the table!

More information about putting your event in the booklet or online, the history of speakers, and other ways to get involved, please visit mlksymposium.umich.edu hosted and sponsored by the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI).

Please email mlksymposiuminfo@umich.edu if you plan on attending an upcoming meeting, so that we may have an accurate food count.

The theme for the 2018 Symposium is The Fierce Urgency of Now. This theme calls us to claim ownership of the challenges we face and not leave it for future generations to address. Amidst technological advancements and increased global connections, much work still needs to be done to heal the wounds of our past, and resolve the injustices of our present. The Fierce Urgency of Now compels us to not only act, but to also acknowledge that the absence of action and the continuation of silence, serves to bring us deeper into the shadows of division.

Human beings are political animals, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later, we are still political animals, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture.

This exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy, Olynthos in Greece, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today?

Lead Curator: Christopher Ratté
Co-Curators: Lisa Nevett, Nicola Terrenato, and Kathy Velikov

In this exhibit, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters, from both collage and found object assemblage, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures, who represent history, identity, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing, to jewelry, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

What is Semester in Detroit?
Twice each year, Semester in Detroit brings a new student cohort to live, learn, work and engage in the city. Fall semester runs from September through December, and spring/summer semester runs from May through July. Applications for the spring and fall semesters are accepted on a rolling basis, but final deadlines are detailed on the Applying to SID page.

Through an intensive urban studies curriculum that explores 20th century Detroit history, urban planning, the non-profit sector, creative writing, and more, students learn about the city in a comprehensive way that isn’t available through single course offerings. As an experiential program, the classes are not the only way students learn of the city - yet they provide vital tools and insight to take with students through their own experiences in Detroit.
