Digital Scholarship 101: Conceptualizing your project

Conceptualizing a digital project so that the research goals guide the technology and project, instead of the other way around can sometimes be difficult. In this workshop we will cover conceptualizing a research project with specific scholastic outcomes, objectives, and deliverables. Then, high-level tasks will be conceptualized and mapped to releases, versions, or editions of the project. Discussed approaches will include how to demonstrate the scholarly rigor of your digital project, accurately credit the labor required of the project at every stage, and provide evidence and metrics for promotion and job dossiers.

*Digital Scholarship 101: Workshop Series*

This series of workshops helps scholars avoid outdated projects, unpreserved knowledge, uncredited labor, and privacy or consent issues by emphasizing process in the project life cycle. Workshop participants learn how to conceptualize the life cycle of a project using human-centered design and backwards modelling when planning their projects to better understand how to version, archive, and preserve their research projects. Throughout the series, thematic questions around sustainability, preservation, accessibility, privacy, consent, grant requirements, and teaching with research will be examined. We encourage you to come with a project in mind and bring materials if available, but is not required to attend.

Intended audience: This workshop was developed for humanities graduate students and faculty members who are new to digital scholarship, but is open to everyone to attend.

Please join us on November 2nd and November 16th for our themed office hours about our Anti-racist Digital Research Initiative. If you are not sure if your project is the right fit or have questions about your proposal drop into our office hours! You can take this opportunity to discuss your project proposal with members of the University of Michigan Library Digital Scholarship Service Team and receive some light feedback. We will also provide details and guidance on what we are looking for in a proposal.

If you are unable to make either open office hour sessions, please email library-ds@umich.edu to set up a consultation.

Digital Scholarship 101: Workshop Series

Digital Scholarship 101: Planning your project
Are you planning a digital project but don’t know where to start? In this workshop, participants will learn the steps needed to plan a project for success. From identifying the team members and support you will need to formalize relationships and credit labor in ethical and fair ways. Instructors will lead participants through the process of writing a flexible project charter including documenting decisions and choices from team member responsibilities to technical needs such as platform choices, project phasing and versioning. Practical and critical considerations will be discussed and covered when writing a project charter, and how a project plan can ease the creation of documentation as well as the grant application process. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a project template and a better understanding of the requirements needed for digital scholarship.

Digital Scholarship 101: Workshop Series

Digital Scholarship 101: Managing and Planning for Your Data
Data, what is it, how and why is it managed, and why do granting agencies care? In this workshop we will talk about what counts as “data” from various definitions, including the National Endowment for the Humanities. Participants will go over the ethical concerns and considerations covered and answered by a data management plan, as well as the practical skills needed in developing and writing a data management plan. This workshop will cover topics such as collection and storage, consent agreements, and contingencies for sensitive information and data. At the end of the workshop, participants will understand how data management plans can help protect and archive their research, help with the IRB process, and contribute significantly to the sustainability of their project.

Did you know that WordPress powers nearly 40% of the internet? Would you like to learn more about WordPress and the available services available to you?WordPress is an open-source content management system commonly used for hosting websites. Our WordPress hosting services support faculty websites, lab and research sites, graduate student sites, conferences, course and class sites and various other special projects and digital humanities research. This introductory WordPress course will cover an overview of the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com and the basics of this software. We’ll take a look at the service offerings for WordPress websites and explore published sites in LSA to provide examples of content patterns, functionality, use cases and your options.

A Zoom link for participation will be shared after registration.

Digital Scholarship 101: You’ve heard about “accessibility,” but do you know what it means for your project? This workshop will teach you how to make your project — both its products and processes — accessible to all. You will learn principles, standards, and techniques for developing digital projects that are equitably accessible to people with a range of abilities/disabilities, technologies, and backgrounds. For grants that require projects to meet accessibility guidelines, you will learn to develop an accessibility plan for applications. As a result of this workshop, participants will understand how and why accessibility matters in digital projects, and will have resources to use and refer back to as projects progress.

Please join us for the final workshop in the DS 101 series, which brings it all together. You’ve got a great plan for your research project. It’s conceptualized, and you know how you’ll manage the labor, materials, and information. How do you describe the value of your project in your CV or when you are up for review? And how will people know about it and find it once it exists? Building upon the themes in the DS 101 workshop series, this workshop will discuss how to communicate the successes and impact of your digital project to make it legible to fellow researchers and university administration. This session will provide guidance on how to best communicate and highlight to external and internal stakeholders the deliverables and anticipated outcomes of your project.
