Location: Trotter Multicultural Center
Organized By: Spectrum Center

QTIPOC Dinners are a series of events MESA and Spectrum Center have created together to center the experiences of queer and trans indigenous students & students of color in a relaxed environment. Each dinner is hosted by a local individual we believe can bring a lot to the metaphorical (and actual) table and free food is provided to all who attend. This dinner will feature food from Baba Dari Mediterranean Grill including Chicken Shawarma bowls, Falafel bowls, and Fattoush Salad

This month's host is Dominique Canning. Here's a little more about her:
Dominique is a Ph.D. candidate in Linguistics (with a focus on sociolinguistics and phonetics) and in her 4th year at the University of Michigan. She graduated in 2016 from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) where she was part of the McNair Scholars Program.

Dominique’s research is partially motivated by her own identity as a queer woman of color. She identifies as aromantic asexual and is frequently conscious of how she uses language to navigate through both academic and non-academic spaces. At EMU, she researched the discussion around asexual inclusion in queer spaces online. Though she is not currently looking at asexuality specifically, she looks at queerness and language in her current research. Most recently, she examined the way language was used to construct Titus Andromedon's identity as a Black gay man in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In her future research, she plans to look at how queer people of color use language to construct their own identities in various spaces.

All dinners are hosted 5:30 to 7pm at 1443 Washtenaw. Reserve your spot at this dinner or any of the upcoming dinners at: http://bit.ly/QTIPOCfall2019

She finds inspiration from nightlife, body horror, Islamic architecture, and whatever’s popping on the Instagram explore page. Her latest piece In the Margins: Illuminating Islamic Queerness is an experimental documentary animation which investigates the intersection of faith, sexuality, and gender by following people who identify as queer and/or trans and Muslim. She graduated with her BFA at the University of Michigan’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

Dia De La Muertos (November 1, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68327 68327-17046007@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 1, 2019 5:30pm
Location: School of Public Health Bldg I and Crossroads and Tower
Organized By: MENA ( Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Barger Leadership Institute

The BLI Dinner with... series offers a valuable opportunity for Leadership Fellows to enjoy a dinner with a BLI stakeholder and get a behind the curtain view of their leadership journey. Dinner attendees build community, share leadership interests, and cultivate meaningful connections in an informal setting.

BLI is excited to host Sen. Stephanie Chang for our next Dinner With!

Sen. Stephanie Chang, the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature, worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.

She served as state director for NextGen Climate Michigan, alumni engagement and evaluation coordinator for the Center for Progressive Leadership in Michigan, deputy director for the Campaign for Justice and as an organizer for Michigan United/One United Michigan. She also worked as a community engagement coordinator for the James and Grace Lee Boggs School and assistant to Grace Lee Boggs, an activist, writer, and speaker.

The senator also is a co-founder and past president of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote-Michigan, and she served as a mentor with the Detroit Asian Youth Project.

In the state House, Sen. Chang led the way on air quality protection, education, criminal justice reforms, improving economic opportunities, and affordable, safe drinking water. She passed bipartisan legislation on a range of issues including female genital mutilation, nitrous oxide “whip-its”, reentry services for wrongfully convicted individuals who were exonerated, and more. She quickly earned her colleagues’ respect and was named chair of the Progressive Women’s Caucus in her second term. She also served on the leadership team for the House Democratic Caucus both terms and was a co-founder of the Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus.

This event intends to have different black cultural organizations across campus come and showcase their cultural pride through art, performance, or any form of creative expression. The event will also include a buffet of food from different aspects of the African diaspora, such as soul food, different African dishes, and even dishes from Afro-Latino/Caribbean backgrounds.

At this event, participants and student groups will have an opportunity to celebrate and showcase their artistic talents in many ways, including spoken word, dance, singing, etc. We'll also have local Black vendors at the event.

We are also looking for black art, photographs, and creative pieces to showcase in an art gallery during this event that will take place at the very beginning. There will be an entire section of the union ballroom dedicated to displaying all sorts of black art, Afrocentric collective pieces for anyone who chooses to have art displayed.
