CEW+ Inspire Workshop - Inclusion of Individuals with Disabilities: Using Your Skills and Gifts to Create Access in Your Community (February 14, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59079 59079-14677956@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 14, 2019 1:00pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: CEW+

This workshop encourages attendees to consider how they can work to be deliberately more inclusive of individuals with disabilities in their local and world communities. While exploring the unique journey of Dr. Jacqueline Kaufman as she shifted from hard sciences to clinical psychology, attendees will examine how to pull from their full range of experiences to forge their own path. After discussing the complexity of defining disability, attendees will consider the experiences of individuals living with disabilities and the debates and conversations about disability that are taking place in our communities. To wrap up the session, a hands-on activity will promote problem-solving, encourage the generation of realistic strategies for optimizing access for individuals with disabilities, and encourage participants to take first steps in their lives to create a more universally accessible community.

The discussion will be followed by a networking reception.

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit (February 27, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61069 61069-15027198@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 27, 2019 9:00am
Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Institute for Social Research

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit is a traveling exhibit designed to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions, and awareness of disability issues. Using a multi-media approach to demonstrate respect, comfort and awareness, the
exhibit offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators.

It has been twenty years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and almost forty years since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both of these laws protect against discrimination of people with disabilities by requiring equal access to employment, education, goods and services.

Americans have progressed in their attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities; however, there remain questions and concerns about appropriate communication, comfort level, and inclusive practices.

When it comes to interacting with individuals with disabilities, people ask:
"What should I do?", "How should I respond?", "Is it okay to say that?", "How can I become an ally?"; Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit will attempt to answer some of these questions.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to experience The Ability Exhibit when it visits the Institute for Social Research (426 Thompson St.)

February 27, 9am-4pm
February 28, 8:30am-4pm

On April 8, 2019, the University of Michigan will take part in The Rebound’s campaign to create more inclusion in society. The acclaimed film The Rebound (76 mins) offers an insider’s perspective to adapted sports and the world of disability as it follows the underdog journey of the Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball team in their quest for their first NWBA National Championship. The cameras don’t stop when the players leave the court: the film follows the athletes through daily life with a disability as they reach for new heights.

The film has been an official selection at more than twenty film festivals and fifty special screenings, received numerous awards, and has been piloted successfully in schools and university research studies. Critics say, “Here is a rare breed of documentary that often uses images instead of words to tell its story.” – Miami Herald and “you’ll never think about disabilities the same way again.” – No Film School.

The purpose of this event is to foster meaningful discussion around inclusion, celebrate the power of the thriving human spirit, and introduce the growing adaptive sports programming occurring at The University of Michigan, because #itsallabouthowyourebound.

Featuring a Q&A session with Ryan Martin, moderated by Dr. Feranmi Okanlami following the film.

Starting from the two activist campsites set up in Seoul, one by the coalition of disability organizations and the other by the Supporters for the Health and Rights of People in the Semiconductor Industry, Kim explores a history of occupational health movements and their intersections with disability rights movements in South Korea. Against the bureaucratic technology of rating the degree of disability and harm, necro-activism emerges in the form of persistent involvements of dead bodies, mourning, and other-than-human presence, making claims for justice as an ongoing practice of everyday life and afterlife.

Presenting from her book, Kim will examine a direct link between cure and violence that appears in the representations of disability and Cold War imperialism in South Korea. She explores the notion of “folded time” in which the present disappears through the imperative of cure in the case of Hansen’s disease care. By thinking about the imperative of cure as a time machine that seeks to take us to the past and to the future by universalizing disability experiences and denying coevalness, Kim explores the possibility of inhabiting in the present with disability and illness. While calling attention to the transnational construction of disability under militarism and imperialism, Kim argues that the possibility of life with disability that is free from violence depends on the creation of a space and time where cure is understood as a negotiation rather than a necessity.

Her book, Curative Violence (Duke University Press) received Alison Piepmeier Award from the National Women's Studies Association and the James B. Mari Katayama: My Body as Material (October 10, 2019 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65258 65258-16559488@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 10, 2019 5:10pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Japanese artist Mari Katayama features her own body in a provocative series of works combining photography, sculpture, and textiles. Born with a developmental condition, she has only two fingers on one hand and had both her legs amputated at the age of nine; she has worn prosthetics ever since. In order to fill a deep gap between her own understanding of self and physicality and contemporary society’s simplistic categorizations, Katayama began to explore her identity by objectifying her body in her art. Katayama treats her entire body, body parts, and prosthetics as “materials” to be arranged in photographs, read as soft sculptures, and decorated with lace, shells, and shiny objects. Katayama’s work exposes anxieties that haunt many of us — disabled or nondisabled — living in an age obsessed with body image. One of the most exciting new artists emerging from contemporary Japan, Katayama’s work is featured in this year’s Venice Biennale in Italy. Her exhibition at UMMA, Mari Katayama (on view October 12, 2019 – January 26, 2020), will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the US. The talk will be moderated by Natsu Oyobe, curator of Asian art at UMMA and the exhibition curator.

Presented in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Lead support for the UMMA exhibition Mari Katayama is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Center for Japanese Studies, the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation, and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund and the University of Michigan CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.

"Disability is not a great struggle or 'courage in the face of adversity.' Disability is an art. It's an ingenious way to live." -Neil Marcus

In this panel event, scholars and practitioners discuss opportunities for ingenuity as a growing number of higher education institutions shift toward an intersectional cultural model of disability.

Panelists:

Dr. Stephanie Kerschbaum (she/hers), a U-M National Center for Institutional Diversity scholar in residence and associate professor of English at the University of Delaware whose work includes understanding experiences of disability and difference within academic and institutional culture.

Lloyd Shelton (he/him), U-M School of Social Work alumnus who founded Students with Disabilities and our Allies Group (SDAG) and received the 2014 Neubacher Award for his contributions to advancing disability inclusion on U-M’s campus.

Piotr Pasik (he/him), Director of Adaptive Recreation at Michigan State University who teaches courses on integrated wheelchair sports, uses adaptive sports to cultivate disability inclusion, and has helped propel MSU's adaptive sports facilities to the top of the Big Ten.

liz thomson (they/them), University of Minnesota-Morris's Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Director of Equity, Diversity, and Intercultural Programs with 20+ years of higher education experience, including teaching women's studies and Asian American studies, whose current research focuses on the new phenomenon of disability cultural centers in US higher education.

Moderated by Ashley Wiseman, Co-Chair of Disability Culture at U-M, with welcoming remarks from Dr. Robert Adams, Director of U-M Initiative on Disability Studies.

This event is co-presented by Disability Culture at U-M and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our generous cosponsors include the UM Initiative on Disability Studies, Voices of the Staff, and the Council for Disability Concerns.

About Disability Culture at U-M
In the University of Michigan's 2016 campus climate survey, 48% of disabled students, nearly a third of disabled staff, and a quarter of disabled faculty reported experiencing at least one incident of discrimination based on their disability identity. Our cross-disability group is dedicated to bringing disabled students, staff, and faculty together in order to build a prideful community that centers disability culture, as it intersects with our other identities. We foster friendships, coordinate events (e.g., our recent panel on disability inclusion that drew 500 attendees), and work toward the establishment of a Disability Cultural Center at the University of Michigan.

In this talk, award-winning poet and memoirist George Estreich will draw from his new book, Fables and Futures: Biotechnology, Disability, and the Stories We Tell Ourselves (MIT Press, 2019).

From Francis Galton's “Essays in Eugenics” to the announcement of the first gene-edited babies, the dream of human improvement has been entwined with persuasion. Looking at contemporary and historical examples, from the famous allegorical drawing of the “Eugenics Tree” to Chinese scientist He Jiankui's YouTube announcement of gene-edited twins, Estreich will explore the literary aspects of persuasion, with particular attention to metaphor. What values do these persuasive acts embody? Whose purposes do they serve? And whom do they obscure, dehumanize or erase? The literary content of these persuasive acts suggests a necessary role for writers, literary critics and scholars of disability studies, as we seek to guide the use of new and powerful biotechnologies in human beings.

Interdependent Pedagogies: Rethinking Access and Disability in Graduate Education

This talk draws from a small qualitative study of graduate students, exploring their experiences in coursework and how these experiences shape their teaching. Graduate students participating in the study grapple with ableist norms and offer insight into how disability studies as both content and approach influences their personal pedagogies.

Lauren Obermark is an assistant professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she teaches courses about rhetoric, writing, disability studies, and public memory to undergraduate and graduate students. At the heart of all her work is an ongoing investigation of how rhetoric informs 21st-century practices of civic engagement, social justice, and pedagogy. She has recently published articles on writing program administration, disability studies, and public rhetoric in/about Ferguson, Missouri.

Organized By: Nineteenth Century Forum

We will be workshopping Jean Franzino's article draft, entitled "Tales Told by Empty Sleeves: Disability, Mendicancy, and Civil War Life Writing." This paper considers how texts written or sold by disabled Civil War veterans for their economic support intervened in representational struggles over disability in the postbellum United States. Mendicant texts draw upon but revise the treatment of disability in other popular culture representations of “empty sleeves” and in U.S. pension law. As they challenge both the assumption of the sentimental reintegration of the wounded veteran into the individual and national family and the conception of disability as a neatly administrable category, they offer instead a different vision: that of disability as a dynamic phenomenon whose full meaning is only determined by interpersonal relationships. At the same time, the fact that a number of narrators chose to stretch or evade the truth in their narratives points to what David Serlin has termed “hierarchies of disability,” wherein the cultural inclusion of some forms of disability merely tightens the criteria of “worthiness” for all disabled people. An understudied but fraught genre of disability life writing before the twentieth century, Civil War mendicant texts raise questions about the relationship between disability and narrative, the character of Civil War writing, and the stakes of truthfulness in life writing by marginalized subjects.

To RSVP and receive a copy of the pre-circulated paper, please email Ani Bezirdzhyan (abezirdz@umich.edu).
