Teach Out Series- Stand up for Science: Practical Approaches to Discussing Science that Matters (May 5, 2017 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/40647 40647-8660539@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 5, 2017 12:00am

Everyone - non-scientists and scientists alike - has some form of expertise, but communicating across a gap in knowledge or experience is challenging. In this Teach-Out, we address this challenge by helping participants to develop core communication skills and more effectively communicate with one another.

Participants will learn why science communication is both essential and fundamentally challenging. Experts in three broad areas of public engagement with science - Policy & Advocacy, Education & Outreach, and Science in the Media - will weigh in to share their knowledge. Anyone with a STEM story to tell will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of their audience, craft a clear message, weave a compelling story, and practice giving and receiving feedback on science communications. And all participants will be able to engage in a series of discussions addressing key issues in science communication.

Because the practice of science encourages dialogue, requires diverse perspectives, and has no political agenda, we hope this Teach-Out is a useful step in encouraging more science conversations between individuals and their local, national, and global communities.

A Teach Out is a free online course that takes place in a fixed, short period of time (1 week). Each Teach Out provides an opportunity to give and take ideas and information from people with just a 3-4 hour commitment over the span of a week.

William K. Merkel Ph.D., J.D. and Lynn L. Janulis Ph.D., J.D., patent attorneys from Marshall, Gerstein and Borun, LLP, will discuss options to effectively secure intellectual property associated with academic drug discovery and diagnostics projects. Topics such as what is currently patentable under US and international patent law with a focus on therapeutics (small molecules, biologicals, natural products, clinical diagnostics and research tools) will be discussed. Please come ready to learn and ask questions.

Hosted by U-M Center for the Discovery of New Medicines (CDNM) and U-M Office of Tech Transfer (OTT) and moderated by Ed Pagani, OTT Associate Director, University of Michigan.

Lynn Janulis, Ph.D., J.D.

Dr. Janulis concentrates her practice on securing patent rights in the life science technologies. She has extensive knowledge in the fields of biotechnology, including molecular biology, virology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, and pharmaceuticals. Among her specific areas of interest are reproductive biology, developmental and animal biology, cancer, vaccines, stem cell technologies, antibodies, pharmaceutical compositions, recombinant organisms and expression systems, recombinant proteins and methods of production and use, transgenic animals, assays and diagnostic methods, and methods of treatment of various diseases and disorders.

Dr. Janulis received her J.D. from The John Marshall Law School. She earned her Ph.D. in molecular and reproductive endocrinology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Urology at Northwestern University Medical School prior to joining the Firm.

William K Merkel, PhD., J.D.

Biotechnology clients benefiting from Dr. Merkel’s technical and legal experience have ranged from industry leaders to start-up enterprises. He has experience in medical diagnostics and therapeutics, agricultural and pharmaceutical products and methods, genomics, and medical and agricultural biotechnology. In addition to providing prosecution and litigation services in these areas, he develops intellectual property strategies and assists clients with validity, infringement and patentability opinions.

Dr. Merkel’s contributions to the field of biotechnology include graduate-level research that has contributed to our understanding of the molecular genetics of vitamin biosynthesis in prokaryotes. As a Research Fellow, he discovered the Pan Operon, revealing the organization of genes involved in pantothenate biosynthesis, as reported in the peer-reviewed literature. This research experience and advanced training equip him with the ability to thoroughly understand the complex scientific technologies of his clients.

Dr. Merkel received his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned a B.A. in economics and psychology from Knox College.

Givenness and the Said Construction - Alicia Stevers
Information within a discourse is introduced in a way that reflects the speaker’s assumptions about the knowledge of the hearer. Theories of discourse often label information that the hearer is expected to know at the time of utterance as “given” information. However, different discourse theories have argued that a wider or narrower range of phrases should be considered given, based on whether they contain information that has been explicitly mentioned, inferred by something previously stated or assumed to be in the hearer’s consciousness by common world knowledge (Chafe 1967, Haviland & Clark 1974, Chafe 1976, Kuno 1978, Prince 1981, 1992, inter alia). One construction that seems to interact with notions of givenness is the Said Construction (SC). SC is characterized by the use of said as a determiner, followed by a noun (N2) that seems to be given (in some sense) and licensed by an antecedent noun (N1): “I made a turkey sandwichN1 for lunch but I left said sandwichN2 on the kitchen counter.” A close examination of SC seems to show that said can only be used to refer to something that has already been stated or is linguistically entailed by the discourse. With this in mind, looking at information structure through the lens of this construction can provide a new perspective into some of the less solidified and conventionally agreed upon details of the notion of givenness.
I present the results of two studies on SC. The first is a corpus based analysis based on a collection of 261 tokens found across a variety of genres such as fiction, spoken language, written news, historical documents, blogs, and social media. The results of this analysis reveal a strong tendency for SC to refer to information that is given due to linguistic context. The second study tested the results of the first analysis by gathering native English speakers’ judgements of the grammaticality of SC in various informational contexts. Results show that participants are most likely to rate said as acceptable in an environment with a linguistically stated referent. The results of these experiments point towards the idea that in order to account for SC’s relationship with information in a discourse, a definition of givenness that is limited to linguistic context and excludes extralinguistic information (such as situational context and world knowledge) is necessary.

"People say, 'Omarosa is Black, Omarosa is a Woman,' I'm an American First." :
Omarosa and Hyperarticulated /t/ - Rachel Elizabeth Weissler
Multiple scholarly treatments have argued that released or hyperarticulated /t/ indexes intelligence, is used in more professional contexts, and indexes emphasis and strength in discourse (Bucholtz 1995, Podesva 2006, Eckert 2008b). Podesva et al’s (2015) study on released /t/ demonstrates that even in a subject pool balanced for gender, race, regional accent, and political affiliation, women politicians use final and medial released /t/ more than their male counterparts. Additionally, Podesva et al (2012) show that among many features that former Secretary of State Condoleezza “Condi” Rice uses to construct her identity, 72% of her final /t/’s are released.
The current study looks at the speech of conservative politician Omarosa Manigault and her use of hyperarticulated final /t/ in the construction of her identity. This study shows that variable proportions in how final /t/ is articulated function as an index that allows speakers significant performative flexibility. Though Condi and Omarosa are both black female conservatives, they are very different kinds of conservatives. While Condi has worked in academia and politics her entire career, Omarosa has no formal training in politics, worked briefly in the office of Al Gore during the Clinton Administration, and now works for President Donald Trump, who she forged a relationship with during her stint on The Apprentice. While Condi’s speech reflects “neutrality and standard language” (Podesva et al 2012), Omarosa’s speech indexes a different kind of conservative performance, one rooted in a more populist framework through which she can appeal particularly to African Americans, since working with disenfranchised groups is central to her current role, while also appealing to the American Public at large as a political figure.
The data consist of word-final /t/ realizations within a 15-minute interview of Omarosa on The View, in which she discusses a myriad of topics including her role as assistant to President Trump and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison, her upbringing, the African American community, and her marital engagement. Realizations of final hyperarticulated /t/ were auditorily coded, with a total number of 41 realizations of hyperarticulated /t/ relative to 40 /t/ unreleased realizations. Overall, Omarosa hyperarticulated 50.6% of the time in this interview.
I show that Omarosa’s use of both hyperarticulated /t/ and unreleased /t/ can be linked to specific factors such as particular socio-lexical items (buzzwords from the Trump administration), target audience (the African American community versus America at large), and spontaneous speech versus more prepared remarks. This variation endorses the conclusion that realizations of a feature can vary based on speaker’s opinions about the topics being discussed (Schilling-Estes 2004). Through the calibrated use of these variants of /t/, Omarosa indexes intelligence and professionalism, as has been found in previous research. However, her choice to use unreleased /t/ while discussing certain topics such as her upbringing in the projects, or her fiancé allows her to index a more populist stance, thereby constructing an identity designed to resonate with multiple
audiences.

Abstract:
Linguistic illusions have provided valuable insights into how we mentally navigate complex representations in memory during language comprehension. Two notable cases involve illusory licensing of agreement and negative polarity items (NPIs), where comprehenders fleetingly accept sentences with unlicensed agreement or an unlicensed NPI, but judge those same sentences as unacceptable after more reflection. Existing accounts have argued that illusions are a consequence of faulty memory access processes, and make the additional assumption that the encoding of the sentence remains fixed over time. This paper challenges the predictions made by these accounts, which assume that illusions should generalize to a broader set of structural environments and a wider range of syntactic and semantic phenomena. We show across seven reading-time and acceptability judgment experiments that NPI illusions can be reliably switched ‘‘on” and ‘‘off”, depending on the amount of time from when the potential licensor is processed until the NPI is encountered. But we also find that the same profile does not extend to agreement illusions. This contrast suggests that the mechanisms responsible for switching the NPI illusion on and off are not shared across all illusions. We argue that the contrast reflects changes over time in the encoding of the semantic/pragmatic representations that can license NPIs. Just as optical illusions have been informative about the visual system, selective linguistic illusions are informative not only about the nature of the access mechanisms, but also about the nature of the encoding mechanisms.

Space is limited, so we'll cap RSVP's at about 15!

Please join us next Wednesday, September 13th for lunch and discussion at the Ginsberg Center, as we welcome Scott Kurashige. Dr. Kurashige is professor of American & Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, and author of the recently released The Fifty Year Rebellion: How the U.S. Political Crisis Began in Detroit.

Join us as we discuss 50 Years after the Detroit Rebellion: Lessons from Grace Lee Boggs

What is the significance of the 1967 Detroit Rebellion in the age of Black Lives Matter, Trump, and Dan Gilbert's “Detroit 2.0”?

Scott Kurashige will present his new book The Fifty-Year Rebellion and share insights garnered from 17 years of collaboration with Detroit’s legendary philosopher/activist, Grace Lee Boggs. We will discuss how and why James and Grace Lee Boggs stressed the need to distinguish between a “riot” and a “rebellion” and between “rebellion” and “revolution.” This will set the stage for two critical points: 1) understanding how the “counter-revolution” in response to the civil rights and Black Power movements gave rise to white flight, right-wing populism, mass incarceration, and neoliberal austerity; 2) recognizing the ways radical activists in Detroit are not only at the forefront of the “resistance” but also creating models for a more just and sustainable political and economic system.

Bio: Scott Kurashige is professor of American & Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington Bothell, co-author with Grace Lee Boggs of The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century, and President of the James and Grace Lee Boggs Foundation. From 2000 to 2014, Kurashige was a professor of American Culture, History, Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies, and Afromerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. He also worked with Semester in Detroit, the Ginsberg Center, and Arts of Citizenship and received the U-M Regents' Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Note: Free copies of The Fifty-Year Rebellion: How the U.S. Political Crisis Began in Detroit will be provided to participants.

A sweeping saga told in the voice of an unforgettable heroine, "The Belle of Two Arbors" brings two places vividly to life: a growing “downstate” town driven by a public university striving for greatness, and a small “up north” community seeking prosperity while preserving its natural heritage. Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Belle’s remarkable story is interweaved with accounts of historical events as well as memorable appearances by some of our favorite poets, including Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden, and Robert Frost.

Paul Dimond will talk about his experience conducting research for his first novel at the Ann Arbor District Library, the Bentley Historical Library, and the Special Collections Library in the University of Michigan’s University Library. He will be accompanied by Martha (Marty) Buhr Grimes, who wrote the poems that are Belle’s in the novel.

Paul and Marty are lifelong Ann Arbor residents who share a passion for poetry, their hometown, and Lake Michigan.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia. How does an American academic culture of expression interact with the increasingly international body of authors on campus? And, can non-normative writing paradigms find footing in American academia? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Abstract:
Machine learning, the use of nuanced computer models to analyze and predict data, has a long history in speech recognition and natural language processing, but have largely been limited to more applied, engineering tasks. This talk will describe two more research-focused applications of machine learning in the study of speech perception and production.

For speech perception, we'll examine the difficult problem of identifying acoustic cues to a complex phonetic contrast, in this case, vowel nasality. Here, by training machine learning algorithms on acoustic measurements, we can more directly measure the informativeness of the various acoustic features to the contrast. This by-feature informativeness data was then used to create hypotheses about human cue usage, and then, to model the observed human patterns of perception, showing that these models were able to predict not only the utilized cue, but the subtle patterns of perception arising from less informative changes.

For speech production, we'll focus on data from Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA), which provides position data for the articulators with high temporal and spatial resolution, and discuss our ongoing efforts to identify and characterize pause postures (specific vocal tract configurations at prosodic boundaries; Katsika et al. 2014) in the speech of 7 speakers of American English. Here, the lip aperture trajectories of 800+ individual pauses were gold-standard annotated by a member of the research team, and then subjected to principal component analysis and discrete cosine transform. These analyses were then used to train a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, which achieved a 94% classification accuracy in cross-validation tests, with a Cohen's Kappa showing machine-to-annotator agreement of 0.978, suggesting the potential for improvements in speed, consistency, and objective characterization of gestures.

These methods of modeling feature importance and classifying curves using machine learning both demonstrate concrete methods which are potentially useful and applicable to a variety of questions in phonetics, and potentially, in linguistics in general.

Serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease, and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers. Drawing on the very latest research, Jo Marchant explores the vast potential of the mind’s ability to heal, lays out its limitations and explains how we can make use of the findings in our own lives.

“...Cure points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.” Amazon Review.
Let’s bring our open minds and our healthy skepticism to this book discussion for those 50 and above on the possible future of medicine.

Instructor Mike Murray, a Clinical Psychologist, will lead two hour sessions on Tuesdays from September 18 through October 23.

The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season has produced incredibly destructive storms, and has raised many questions. What drives a hurricane? How accurate are hurricane models? How do authorities prepare for hurricanes and, when destructive events like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma happen, how do we respond? Is this hurricane season a fluke, or should we start planning for more/similar storms? In this Teach-Out, we will explore the science of hurricanes, hurricane forecasting and monitoring, and with what confidence can we attribute these storms to a warming ocean.

Teach-Outs are short learning experiences, each focused on a specific current issue. Attendees will come together over a few days not only to learn about a subject or event but also to gain skills. Teach-Outs are open to the world and are designed to bring together individuals with wide-ranging perspectives in respectful and deep conversation. These events are an opportunity for diverse learners and a multitude of experts to come together to ask questions of one another and explore new solutions to the pressing concerns of our global community. This conference will consider the varying, and to some extent conflicting, international perspectives on privacy and its points of tension with freedom of expression. We will begin with foundational concerns of legal theory: How is privacy conceived of and defined in various legal systems? To what extent does (and should) privacy serve as a limiting principle on freedom of expression? We will then move to more pragmatic questions about how these issue play out on the ground. Do heads of state have privacy rights that limit what can be said about them by the media and citizens? How do individuals with privacy concerns navigate the varying protections offered by different legal regimes? What challenges are posed to media and online entities that must determine how to comply with differing standards?

Abstract

Contemporary literature suggests that listeners use auditory and visual gender cues during /s/-/ʃ/ categorization. This study builds upon previous research on sibilant categorization by investigating whether self-perceived power, “an individual’s relative capacity to modify others’ states by providing or withholding resources or administering punishments” (Keltner et al. 2003), can serve as a mediating factor in gender and linguistic perception. Social processing seems to show some sensitivity to one's degree of self-perceived power - high-power individuals tend to attend less to information in conflict with their expectation of another according to the other’s social category. (Goodwin et al. 2000). I report whether gender cue congruity and the participant's primed degree of self-perceived power shapes the outcome of /s/-/ʃ/ categorization.

Participants were primed for a high or low degree of self-perceived power and completed a forced-choice identification task. During each trial, participants saw an image of a face and heard one of a continuum of words ranging from "shy" to "sigh"; they indicated whether they heard "shy" or "sigh". A mixed logistic regression revealed that participants overall were significantly more likely to respond “sigh” for a male voice (p<0.001) and male face (p=0.01). Participants primed for low-power were also significantly more likely to respond “sigh” when a given voice was paired with a male face, relative to when it was paired with a female face (p<0.001) . Participants primed for high-power, however, were not significantly more likely to respond “sigh” for a given voice according to what face was paired with it (p=0.4). As hypothesized, the responses of high-power participants showed less sensitivity to gender cue congruity than did those of low-power participants.

Style in a second dialect: Topic- and stance-based variation among mobile speakers

People often change the way they speak after moving to and living in a new region. Mobile speakers do not simply "lose" an old accent or "gain" a new one, however; instead, they alter specific dialect features depending on a range of linguistic, social-attitudinal, and developmental factors (e.g. Payne 1980; Chambers 1992; Kerswill 1996; Evans & Iverson 2007; Nycz 2013). Studies that compare the overall “acquirability” of multiple features reveal how linguistic competence may evolve as a result of exposure to new input, and can help us develop better theories about the representations and processes underlying these changes (Nycz 2013, 2015; Walker 2014). But if we want to understand more broadly how communicative competence (Hymes 1972) can develop over the lifespan, we must look at how speakers use both old and new dialect forms in interaction. To this end, I examine topic-and stance-based stylistic variation in the speech of Canadians who have been living long-term in the New York City or Washington D.C. regions, focusing on how they use regionally varying vowel features to express views about their first home (Canada and/or their hometown) as well as their adopted one (The United States and/or their new city). I find that these speakers exhibit gradient shift towards U.S. norms for all vowels analyzed, as well as stylistic variation in regional stereotypes or markers associated with both their first region and their current one. Specifically, positive or alignment stances towards Canada are associated with raising in (aw) (as in about and house), while negative and distancing stances are associated with lower (aw) nuclei; no effect of style is found for (ay), a vowel which similarly differs across regions but does not carry similar social significance. Similarly, positive or alignment stances towards New York City are associated with higher (oh) (as in coffee), but only among new New Yorkers; no style effect is found for (o) (as in copy). These results suggest that mobile speakers continue to exploit the socio-indexical links in their native dialect while also learning and using new links in their adopted dialect – but only if those links are sufficiently socially salient.

Advances in prenatal screening and genetic manipulation have the potential to all but eliminate birth defects and genetic disorders. For example, prenatal genetic testing in Iceland has almost completely erased incidents of down’s syndrome in newborns. This has led to growing concerns over creating designer babies, hyperbole about the potential for a new era of eugenics, and broader questions about whether science is outstripping societal or ethical norms in regards to human genetic diversity.

Join Joselin Linder, author of “The Family Gene”, and Jodyn Platt, assistant professor in the U-M Medical School in a panel discussion about the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetics and newborn screening. Current mass media provides us with the picture of political adversaries living in alternate universes with different views of reality. From social media to cable TV, we find ourselves in information silos of our own construction, getting news and views from like-minded sources. This can make it hard for us to grapple with the complexities of the political world we live in today.

This study group is for those 50 and over and will meet for 90 minutes on Tuesdays from September 26 through November 7 (except for October 10). Participants will bring their values and beliefs to facilitate their understanding of alternative political realities and share each other’s critical insights, to help them become more informed citizen.

Instructor Tom Murray has a Ph.D. in Communications from U-M, is Emeritus Professor of Communication at EMU.

There can be little doubt that the democratizing impetus of the digital revolution has transformed the practices and publics of our scholarly work, perhaps no more so than in the shifting terrain of archival recovery. Innovations in digital media from portable high quality scanners to smartphones that can produce precision digital recordings have made it easier for scholars to collect, organize and share primary sources from their research in formats that disrupt top-down models of knowledge production. Indeed, “renegade” archives are popping up all over, challenging the control of traditional institutions over the valuation, curation, and access to primary sources. In this presentation, I will discuss how a critical practice of digital scholarship can embrace this moment of disruption to re-imagine knowledge-making as a collaborative effort; one that produces knowledge not only for scholarly communities but also for (and with) a broader public that until now has only rarely come into contact with our scholarly work. How does such collaborative knowledge making demand a shift, both conceptual and practical, in the ecosystem of our scholarship, from the question of what kind of scholarly products we produce (books, articles, exhibitions, collections) to the question of how these products are received (Who are our audiences, where does our work land, whom does it serve?). What role might the university play in either supporting or ultimately re-incorporating the liberatory impulses of these disruptive digital practices?

Maria Cotera, U-M associate professor of American Culture and Women’s Studies, discusses how the critical practice of digital scholarship can re-imagine knowledge-making as a collaborative effort; one that produces knowledge not only for scholarly communities but also for (and with) a broader public that until now has only rarely come into contact with our scholarly work.

Maria Cotera is a scholar of feminist of color genealogies who holds a joint appointment in the Departments of American Culture and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. She was the 2014-15 Helmut F. Stern Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities.

Over a billion people practice Hinduism and most of them live in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal, although modern communications have led to the migration of Hindus throughout the world. Hinduism has remained a puzzle to Westerners because the concepts of divinity and afterlife differ from Abrahamic religions.

This study group for those 50 and above will explore these differences in detail, as well as discuss various sects of Hinduism, the core beliefs common to them and the philosophies unique to each. We will also explore the historic evolution of Hinduism, its spread through Southeast Asia, its place in the contemporary political-social-economic environment in India and the global environment and its interaction with other faiths and belief systems.

Instructor Venkat Lakshminarayanan will lead these two hour sessions on Wednesdays from September 27 through November 8.

Come, join the conversation!

We’ve mastered the world, but two cognitive psychologists (S. Sloman and P. Fernbach) in this new book say we are increasingly ignorant as individuals and depend heavily
on collective information plus each other to solve problems. They argue that human inventions come less from individual ingenuity and much more from language-related abilities to learn from and work with others.

The book combines scientific evidence with dozens of intriguing examples of shared human creations, such as money, but has no complete solution for how to avoid manipulation and cope with today’s information explosion.

This study group for those 50 and above will be led by instructor Paul Wenger who retired in 1992 after 30 years as a communications professor.

This group will meet for two hours on Thursdays from September 28 through October 26.

Ann Arbor artist Jaye Schlesinger talks about her exhibition Possession, which evolved in response to her interest in mindfulness and minimalism and the role they play in personal well being. After disposing (selling, recycling, giving away) of everything that no longer served to enrich her life, Schlesinger decided to merge this exercise with her art practice and depicted all of her remaining possessions in small oil paintings, 380 in total. The paintings depict objects of functionality and ones of beauty, eliciting contemplation and conversation about the ‘stuff’ we choose to live with.

A complement to the Reverberations of Rebellion exhibit on display in the Hatcher North lobby, this event brings together veterans of the '60s era of civil rights activism in Ann Arbor to reflect on that period's struggle for racial justice, the relationship between Ann Arbor and Detroit, and what it might mean for us today.

In the 1960s as today, Detroit and Ann Arbor were very different cities. Yet they were alike in two respects: both were profoundly segregated by race, and both were centers of activism to dismantle racism and inequality. Despite Ann Arbor's distance from Detroit, the 1967 Detroit rebellion resonated here as well.

The discussion will be moderated by Matt Lassiter, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of History, and feature the following panelists:
* Shirley Beckley, Ann Arbor native and Ann Arbor Human Relations Commission staff member, 1967-8
* Trey Greene, U-M '71; negotiator in '68 black student sit-in and son of Walter Greene, deputy director, Michigan Civil Rights Commission
* Anna Holden, U-M Institute for Social Research 1960-63; former secretary, Ann Arbor Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
* Alma Wheeler Smith, U-M '63; former state representative and daughter of Albert Wheeler, first African American mayor of Ann Arbor and first tenured black U-M professor

Dagmar Kročanová: Repairing the World in Gejza Vámoš´s Writing

Dagmar Kročanová is associate professor of Slovak literature at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, where she also earned her PhD in theory and history of Slovak literature. She is currently working on an anthology of Slovak modernist and avant-garde drama. Professor Kročanová is currently a Weiser Professional Development Fellow at the University of Michigan working on her project, “Modernism in Slovak Literature between 1900 and 1948,” in cooperation with Benjamin Paloff, associate professor of Slavic languages and literatures and comparative literature.

Gejza Vámoš (1901, Hungary – 1956, Brazil), a Slovak writer of a Hungarian Jewish origin, was once described as an Enfant terrible of Slovak literature. A physician with a PhD in philosophy, Vámoš challenged traditional values of bourgeois society represented by religion, family, and nation. His fiction dealt with issues that were considered shocking and incompatible with the Slovak cultural tradition, such as sexuality, diseases, and women´s emancipation. Vámoš strove to find a unifying principle of universe that would heal the current broken state of mankind. But as his novel Broken Branch (1934) shows, the gap between his dream of repairing the world and the actual state Europe was too deep to be bridged.

The event will start at 6:30pm with a light supper followed by the presentation at 7pm. Please RSVP to slavic@umich.edu.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Slavic department (slavic@umich.edu or 734-764-5355) at least 4 days in advance. He is a past officer of the AIHA Ergonomics Committee.

Abstract: Traditionally, dependent stakeholders (i.e., Safety and Human Resources) appreciate the value of ergonomics. They understand that good ergonomics improves employee well-being. This includes reductions in causal absenteeism, first aid cases, modified duty cases, recordable injuries, lost-time cases, worker’s compensation claim costs, among others. However, dominant stakeholders (i.e., Plant Leadership, Quality, Operations, Manufacturing, Board of Directors, and Investors) generally have a limited awareness or understanding of the value of ergonomics. As a result, it is often overlooked and underexploited. During this presentation, participants will learn how to best convey the value of ergonomics to business stakeholders. This includes how to engage and communicate with business stakeholders, and how to educate them on the value of ergonomics on business performance.

Abstract

This presentation explores the outcomes of long-term cross-language transfer effects on different domains of bilingual phonological grammar. Our study focuses on a unique Afrikaans-Spanish bilingual community that has lived in Patagonia, Argentina since the early 1900’s. In this presentation, we will focus in particular on the production of voiced and voiceless plosives by the Afrikaans-Spanish bilingual speakers in comparison to productions by control L1 Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speaking L1 Afrikaans speakers. Our findings suggest that there are L1-to-L2 transfer effects in especially the production of voiced plosives in the speech of the Afrikaans-Spanish bilinguals (i.e., Afrikaans influences their Spanish). We contrast these findings with our previous research on the durational properties of vowels, which showed L2-to-L1 (but not L1-to-L2) transfer effects for the same group of speakers. Altogether, our findings speak to the malleability of pronunciation patterns in bilingual speech, especially in situations of close long-term contact where the L2 becomes the dominant language.

Abstract

Since the Bare Phrase Structure was proposed, ‘projection’, ‘endocentricity’ and ‘label’ have become just stipulation. In Chomsky (2013), based on the simplest Merge, he argues that ‘label’ must not be formed in narrow syntax and it must be captured by the third factor principle, i.e., labelling algorithm. This exocentric, search-based system gives rise a new problem: how to label the exocentric structures without any stipulation in narrow syntax? In this talk, I will present one possible solution in the case of infinitival clauses. Based on Epstein, Kitahara and Seely (2016), I argue that external pair-Merge of phase heads to non-phase heads derives de-phasing effect (a cancellation of phases). The consequences of this analysis are also discussed such as ‘grammatical’ derivations for some cases of improper movement, including tough-constructions in English, hyper-raising in Japanese, and Merge-over-Move principle in terms of labelling.

Title: Recent Advances in Theory of Multipactor Discharges

Abstract: Multipactor is an electron avalanche occurring when stray electrons are trapped and accelerated by radiofrequency (rf) waves in a vacuum, hitting walls and ejecting other electrons by secondary electron emission (SEE). The rapid multiplication in the number of electrons ultimately creates noise, heat and possibly damage in a wide range of environments from space communication systems to accelerators and microwave tubes. Modern design standards use “susceptibility diagrams” for multipactor based on theory developed in the 1950s by Hatch and Williams, which considers multipactor as a resonant discharge. Observed discrepancies with experiment are accounted for by the addition of arbitrary margins that have no theoretical basis. Modern theories acknowledge that multipactor does not necessarily have a single resonance, but can exhibit higher periodicity, or even non-resonant forms. These theories, however, rarely depart from the conventional paradigm of presuming a multipactor mode, then deriving the conditions for that mode, an exercise that can be exceedingly difficult for more complex trajectories. A novel approach based on the methodology of nonlinear dynamics and chaos is presented, in which all possible modes are recovered with no a priori assumptions. Thenewmethodologysystematicallyappliesiterativemapstoidentifymultipactingregion boundaries and stability more reliably and comprehensively than existing models. It does so by globally analyzing the structure of dynamical space, resulting in bifurcation diagrams that summarize all possible multipactor modes over a wide range of parameters. This information is combined with secondary electron emission properties of the surface material to predict multipactor growth rates and identify parameter regions that are multipactor free. Three-dimensional simulations with the WARP PIC code successfully validate the model under more realistic conditions of random emission velocities of secondaries and more realistic rf field profiles.

Come, join the conversation!
