The idea of a unanimous Burmese identity is flawed and presents a rocky foundation for the nation-state of Myanmar. By exploring broader patterns in Asia and connecting them back to Myanmar, we can understand how the rise of nationalism in the country, especially extremist Buddhist movements, obscures its diversity and attempts to rewrite history.

This event is a part of Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) Heritage Month which is celebrated mid-March to mid-April at the University of Michigan. For a full list of events, please visit MESA's website.

The in-person piece of this event has been cancelled and online options are being considered. This page will be updated as soon as decisions are made.

This Trans Day of Visibility, come celebrate the varied ways transgender and nonbinary people show up! In this workshop, we'll be talking about things like makeup, clothes, and accessories and how those can affirm one's identity, while acknowledging the barriers that prevent some in the community from presenting their most authentic self.

If you can, wear an article of clothing, accessory, or outfit that validates your identity and get a chance to tell its story! This will be an affirming and celebratory space for however you present, no matter your identity. We, CAPS, and QAC are all eager to see you!

This event is free and open to all. There will be an intentional focus on the experiences of transfemminine, AMAB nonbinary, and People of Color and those who identify as such are strongly encouraged to come and to speak if desired.

Join us for Jenn's lecture on "Speaking Up and Speaking Out: Why the AAPI Community Must Be Politically Engaged." Jenn is a proud Asian American feminist, scientist and nerd who currently blogs at Reappropriate.co, one of the web’s oldest AAPI feminist and race activist blogs.

For more information and to RSVP, please click here: https://bit.ly/jennfang

Lecture Description:
Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are popularly typecast as apolitical and disengaged, but these stereotypes ignore over 150 years of AAPI movement history marked by intense grassroots political organizing around issues of social justice. In the face of profound, and often state-sanctioned, racial violence, AAPIs have repeatedly come together to demand justice and liberation, often in partnership with other oppressed peoples. The current political climate makes that history even more relevant as Islamophobia and the forcible detention of migrants along the US-Mexico border stir memories of Chinese Exclusion and Japanese American incarceration. In this lecture, Dr. Fang will draw from watershed moments throughout AAPI organizing history – including the landmark Justice for Vincent Chin case that took place in Detroit in the 1980’s – to contextualize contemporary racial politics, and will argue forcefully for why today’s generation of AAPIs must continue that tradition of political engagement in the ongoing fight for racial and social justice.

This event is a part of Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) Heritage Month which is celebrated mid-March to mid-April at the University of Michigan. For a full list of events, please visit MESA's website.

Please visit this website for programming details and to sign up for the Ramadan 2020 listserv: http://bit.ly/ramadan-umich

The International Institute's Islamophobia Working Group and the Muslim Students' Association have transformed our planned in-person Ramadan iftars into completely remote events and resources! Our website (http://bit.ly/ramadan-umich) contains information, activities, and programming, including “Zoom Into Ramadan” gatherings every Monday and Thursday from 7-7:30pm during the month of Ramadan (approximately April 23 to May 23, 2020). As with our in-person iftars, the programming is open to all, both Muslims and non-Muslims. We hope that our iftars and allyship initiatives will establish an enduring tradition of community and inclusion, creating a model for other universities and inspiring similar community educational initiatives during the holidays of other U-M religious minorities.

Please contact Jumanah Saadeh (jumanahs@umich.edu) with any event questions or to share accommodation needs.

Location: Trotter Multicultural Center
Organized By: Spectrum Center

The Spectrum Center is eager to announce that we have found a way to celebrate all LGBTQ+ graduates in a new format!

The Annual Lavender Graduation, also referred to as LavGrad, is a celebration to honor LGBTQ graduates of the University of Michigan. Established by Ronni Sanlo in 1995, the University of Michigan was the first commemorative event of its kind celebrated at an institution of higher learning. This commencement ceremony acknowledges the contributions of any graduates from any school/college at the University and of any academic level. Due to COVID-19 and the University of Michigan’s suspension of all in-person commencements, the day-of ceremony itself has been canceled. However, the Spectrum Center still has opportunities to highlight this year’s graduating class.

All LGBTQ+ students who graduated in Fall 2019 or are set to graduate Winter or Summer 2020 are invited to register as a graduate. Those who register before the EXTENDED deadline of Sunday, April 12th at 11:59 pm will receive a free rainbow 2020 tassel, a lavender cord, and an optional Lavender Degree and optional printed program. Additionally, students will be able to select the ways they would like to be recognized or opt-out of public recognition. The celebratory page will be posted April 30th to coincide with the intended celebration date.

The Spectrum Center is pleased to announce that Ronni Sanlo, Founder of Lavender Graduation in 1995, will be the Keynote Speaker for the Lavender Graduation ceremony and be the recipient of an Honorary Lavender Degree. Playwright, author and LGBT historian Dr. Ronni Sanlo is a well-known keynote speaker at colleges and universities around the country. Ronni speaks not only from her perspective as a higher education/student affairs professor, LGBT center director, dean of students, and faculty in residence but also from her personal life experiences. In lieu of a public speech, Ronni will be providing a pre-recorded video and her remarks in text to be posted along with the 2020 graduating class.

Liaisons help broaden the Ginsberg Center’s capacity to support faculty in preparing students for community engagement through leading curricular and co-curricular workshops, developing curriculum, and integrating current research into Ginsberg Center materials and resources. In return, they are part of a community of practice centered around equitable community engagement. Liaisons learn and apply best practices, cultivate their leadership skills, form relationships with other students, faculty and community partners, and contribute to the Center's mission to support equitable campus-community partnerships in service to the public good.

WHO:
Doctoral students interested in applying and expanding their knowledge and experience with community engagement.

TIME COMMITMENT & PAY:
Each liaison commits to 5 hours a week for both the Fall and Winter semesters, including regular meetings with Ginsberg Center staff and cohort meetings. Depending on availability and project needs, there is also the possibility of working with us over the summer. Liaisons are typically paid $15/hour.

HOW TO APPLY:
The online application is due Friday, May 1, 2020. We will contact applicants to set up a virtual interview.

Review key terminology related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Reflect on the origin of identities, their intersectionality, and their meanings
Use our own identities as a window to understanding the identities of others to build more authentic, empathic relationships

How We Became the “Other”: My Family’s Incarceration Story (June 24, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/74967 74967-19112547@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, June 24, 2020 10:00am

This event is free and available to the public. OLLI membership is not required.

What precipitates the scapegoating and “othering” that has occurred throughout US history? What role does it play in galvanizing the nationwide protests in the current moment? Lori Watanabe Saginaw shares the story of the unconstitutional, forced imprisonment of her parents and grandparents during WWII, along with 120,000 others of Japanese descent, and draws a connection to her own anti-racism activism. George Floyd’s murder underscores the impact of white supremacy in American systems and the urgency and to take action. Watanabe Saginaw offers tools for personal action.

An active Ann Arbor community member since 1974, Lori Watanabe Saginaw is a third generation Japanese American, and practitioner and promoter of race dialogue. She served as co-chair of the Task Force that developed recommendations to the Ann Arbor City Council, resulting in the launching in April 2019, of the Independent Community Police Oversight Commission. Lori is inspired by her 98-year-old mother, May Watanabe, an Ann Arbor resident who has given numerous public talks about her own incarceration experience to offer insight, provoke thought, and encourage the challenging of similar injustices.

VIRTUAL EVENT | Addressing Healthcare Disparities for Individuals with Disabilities – Identifying what you can do (June 25, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74467 74467-18738467@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 25, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

This workshop will be held via Zoom (link to follow via email prior to the event). For safety and privacy, you must be registered to receive the link.

Presenter:
Michelle A. Meade, PhD, Associate Professor, U-M Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, CEW+ 2019 Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity & Social Change Award Winner

Individuals with disabilities comprise about 20% of the population of the United States. This group experiences poorer health outcomes, enhanced rates of hospitalizations, and less satisfaction with healthcare services. Despite their overrepresentation among patients receiving care at Michigan Medicine and other healthcare systems, most healthcare systems take only limited steps to recognize and address their needs through centralized, integrated approaches. This workshop will describe the work that I and my colleagues at the Center for Disability Health and Wellness and the Michigan Medicine Disability Council are doing to enhance outcomes for this underserved group. Participants will learn about the impact of environmental factors on the outcomes and be challenged to identify modifiable factors in their own environments that can be enhanced to improve outcomes for individuals with disabilities as patients, providers, leaders, and learners.

Michelle A. Meade, PhD is an Associate Professor in the U-M Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As a rehabilitation psychologist, she conducts research with, provides clinical services to, and advocates for individuals with physical disabilities. Dr. Meade is currently the Principal Investigator and Director of two federally funded interdisciplinary Centers focusing on disability issues – the U-M Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) and Technology Increasing Knowledge: Technology Optimizing Choice (TIKTOC) which is focused on developing and evaluating mobile technologies to enhance health management and independence among adolescents and young adults with disabilities; and the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Investigating Disability factors and promoting Environmental Access for Healthy Living (IDEAL RRTC), which is focused on promoting healthy aging for individuals with long-term physical disabilities. Dr. Meade also serves as co-chair of the Michigan Medicine Disability Council and the Co-director for the U -M Collaboratory for Disability Health.

In order to have meaningful, productive conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, we must start with a common language. This session will provide an introduction to key terminology as well as the categories and labels we use to describe others and ourselves. We will also examine how our identities shape the way we enter the world and our interactions with each other. Emphasis will be placed on using our identities to help us understand the identities and experiences of others.

In this session, participants will:
Identify the benefits of inclusive environments
Review key terminology related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Reflect on the origin of identities, their intersectionality, and their meanings
Use our own identities as a window to understanding the identities of others to build more authentic, empathic relationships

Audience:
This session is open to all LSA Staff.

PCAP is exploring rescheduling options for the 25th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, originally scheduled for March 18-April 1, 2020. We invite you to participate in our online preview at http://myumi.ch/MEllE.

----------------------------------------
The Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners is one of the largest exhibitions of art by incarcerated artists in the country. Each year, faculty, staff and students from the University of Michigan travel to correctional facilities across Michigan and select work for the exhibition while providing feedback and critique that strengthens artist’s work and builds community around art making inside prisons.

The Blalock Lecture Series and the Getting To Know ISR series are pleased to co-present Dr. Robert Taylor and David Thomas in a talk on ISR's Program for Research on Black Americans and the associated data archived at ICPSR.

Robert Joseph Taylor, MSW, Ph.D., is the Sheila Feld Collegiate Professor and the Harold Johnson Endowed Professor of Social Work at the University of Michigan. He is the Director of the Program for Research on Black Americans at the Institute for Social Research. He is currently on the editorial board of Society and Mental Health and Race and Social Problems and has served on the editorial boards of Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences, the Journal of Marriage and Family, and Family Relations. Professor Taylor has published 3 books and over 175 journal articles in two major areas—African American family social support networks and African American religious participation. He has been Principal Investigator of several grants from the National Institute on Aging which examine the role of religion in the lives of Black and White elderly adults. He has been Co-Principal Investigator with James Jackson on several grants from the National Institute of Mental Health on the correlates of mental health and mental illness among Black Americans including the only major national probability surveys of Black Americans (The National Survey of Black Americans and the National Survey of American Life). He has been selected as one of the 250 Highly Cited researchers in the General Social Science Category by ISIHighlyCited.com (Creators of the Citation Index and Current Contents). The selection of a researcher is based on the total number of citations received by that individual as recorded in the ISI database between 1981-1999.

David Thomas supervises staff in both the General Archive and Resource Center for Minority Data (RCMD). He began his ICPSR career by processing ABC News/Washington Post and CBS News/New York Times polls. Now, his team is responsible for processing public opinion polls for ICPSR. In addition to polling data, his team processes the National Election Pool data, the American National Election Survey data, American Community Survey, and the Latino National Survey for ICPSR.
