"One Soviet Nation? Capturing Ethnic Diversity in Photography of the 1920s and 1930s"

In the early Soviet Union photography played a prominent role in shaping the new society. In the 1920s this new medium was supposed to allow everyone who was part of the Socialist project to participate in photographic expression, either as a photographer or as a subject. Photography captured daily life experience of different people was and made it known to people in distant regions. But how much room was there for self-portrayal of those who were not in the (European) centres of the USSR? By examining photographs of non-Russian ethnic groups, mainly in Central Asia, this presentation discusses choices of motifs and artistic devices, value attributions and ideological implications in shaping the Soviet Nation in photography.

In 1971 nearly 1300 prisoners began one of the 20th century's most important protests for better conditions and basic human rights. Their struggle was ended brutally by the state of NY with vast consequences for criminal justice policy in this country. Dr. Thompson spent more than a decade recovering this history for her book Blood in the Water. It is a story of hope, horror, heroism, and even a most shocking cover up. In this talk Thompson will share Attica's history as well as explain why this history matters today.

About the book:

Education, employment, and home ownership have long been considered stepping stones to the middle class. But in Abandoned Families, social policy expert Kristin Seefeldt shows how many working families have access only to a separate but unequal set of poor-quality jobs, low-performing schools, and declining housing markets which offer few chances for upward mobility. Through in-depth interviews over a six-year period with women in Detroit, Seefeldt charts the increasing social isolation of many low-income workers, particularly African Americans, and analyzes how economic and residential segregation keep them from achieving the American Dream of upward mobility.

About the author:

Kristin S. Seefeldt's primary research interests lie in exploring how low-income individuals understand their situations, particularly around issues related to work and economic well-being. She is the author of Working After Welfare (W.E. Upjohn Institute Press), which discusses employment advancement and work-family balance challenges as experienced by former welfare recipients. Currently, she is conducting research on families' financial coping strategies during an economic downturn and is a Principal Investigator of a survey examining the effects of the recession and recovery policies on individuals' well-being. Previously, Seefeldt was an Assistant Research Scientist at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the Assistant Director of the National Poverty Center, both at the University of Michigan, and an Assistant Professor at the School of Public and Environment Affairs, Indiana University. She holds a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan in Sociology and Public Policy.

How can we recreate and make meaning of the experiences of queer-identified University of Michigan students during the first half of the twentieth century? This panel addresses this question by exploring key moments and figures in U-M’s queer history during the years spanning 1900-1960. By unraveling the moments in which queer experiences became public and by tracing the networks and movements of key figures, such as U-M graduate Forman Brown (who published his 1933 gay coming-of-age novel Better Angel under the pseudonym Richard Meeker), this panel works towards determining the reach and scope of U-M’s early twentieth-century queer histories. Featuring Cassius Adair, Alex Chow, and David Hutchinson.

This LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester event is presented with support from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

Where are we and what do we aspire to for ourselves and our community? There will be multiple questions discussed in small groups that are intended as conversation starters. Participants will need only respond to the one or two of the questions that matter the most to them. There will be several rounds of talking points from core values and understanding more about race and ethnicity, to reflection, accomplishment and next steps. Come join us for this guided, civil discourse in the form of a Living Room Conversation, on race and ethnicity.

Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester

This roundtable explores the potential renaming of the C.C. Little Building at the University of Michigan. Little was University President from 1925 to 1929. He also was an avowed eugenicist who supported policies such as compulsory sterilization of the “unfit” and immigration restriction. Little was instrumental in organizing the Third Race Betterment Conference held in Battle Creek in 1928. Forty years later, the U-M regents voted to bestow his name on the East Medical Building as part of a broader effort to recognize previous university presidents. Given Little’s associations with ideas and practices that today are anathema to our values of diversity, inclusion, and non-discrimination, should this building be renamed? Panelists will explore this question in light of recent institutional guidelines for building renaming, and approaches of other universities facing similar struggles around renaming campus sites. We will consider the social justice rationales for renaming and attendant risks of sanitizing the uglier sides of institutional histories.

Featuring Matthew Countryman (University of Michigan), Kumea Shorter-Gooden (University of Maryland), Alexandra Minna Stern (University of Michigan), Martin S. Pernick (University of Michigan, chair), and Joshua Hasler (student representative).

This LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester event is presented with support from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

Located in the Lester P. Monts Gallery of the Detroit Center, the Selected Works from the 22nd Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners includes a guest reading on Saturday, May 20 from"Concertina MAZE: Michigan Review of Prisoner Creative Writing, Volume 9."

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The first Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners was held in the University of Michigan Rackham Galleries in February 1996. Seventy works by 50 artists from 16 Michigan prisons were exhibited that year. This year, the exhibition’s 22nd consecutive year, we displayed 550 works of art by 450 artists on the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan. We encourage you to have conversations with the artists by reading the artist statements

HOW THE SHOW COMES TOGETHER

Each year, the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) submits a formal request to the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) to hold the exhibition. Once the exhibit is approved, we send a call for submissions directly to artists and to staff at each of Michigan’s 28 prisons. Artists work independently, using supplies they have purchased themselves, to create their work. Art selection teams made up of Curators, Staff, Students, and Volunteers travel to each prison to meet with artists, select work and provide feedback and support to artists regardless of whether their work is selected. Our goal is to be inclusive while maintaining a high level of quality and diverse work.

Most work is for sale at our exhibition in Ann Arbor and artists receive the full amount, less any mandatory fees and taxes. PCAP does not take a percentage of sales. You can purchase artwork at the gallery desk. A red dot on the label indicates a work has been sold.

A team of judges has recognized several works with awards. These are the works you see at this exhibition here at the University of Michigan Detroit Center. A distinct set of awards are given to artists at the women’s prison. These pieces are not for sale at this exhibition.

After the exhibition, the unsold artwork is shipped to a contact person specified by the artist. Once artwork has left the facilities, it cannot return inside. PCAP sends each artist a packet of exhibit promotional materials, notification of any sales, a certificate, and a copy of the guest book. Each facility receives a DVD of the opening reception and a slideshow of each piece of artwork so that artists can see the exhibit.

High quality relationships are born and sustained in an environment of respect. Respect provides the safety needed to grow trust in relationships. Where there is trust, individuals are free to step into their higher capacities, create together what has not existed before and are more inclined to willingly and graciously tent to the needs of others; be it their students, families or co-workers.

This presentation will renew the concept of respect for individuals and provide tools as to how to practice this everyday. The LARA method of effective listening and communication in conversations will be introduced.

Give it. Get it. Expect Respect (August 8, 2017 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/41466 41466-9269830@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, August 8, 2017 2:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: LSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

High quality relationships are born and sustained in an environment of respect. Respect provides the safety needed to grow trust in relationships. Where there is trust, individuals are free to step into their higher capacities, create together what has not existed before and are more inclined to willingly and graciously tent to the needs of others; be it their students, families or co-workers.

This presentation will renew the concept of respect for individuals and provide tools as to how to practice this everyday. The LARA method of effective listening and communication in conversations will be introduced.

This is a FREE lunch time brown bag session, so please feel free to bring your lunch! Light refreshments will also be provided.

Susan Eisenberg, 2016 Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist, returns to Ann Arbor to share her virtual exhibit titled On Equal Terms: Gender and Solidarity.

Her multimedia work chronicles the experiences of women working in trade and union positions and how they navigate sexism and discrimination in male-dominated workplaces. Featured in her virtual exhibit will include a 6 minute video of Stella, a life-sized composite figure of women working on a ladder. Her (Stella) work uniform is decorated by actual statements from women's harassment while on the job site. Susan's virtual exhibit will fully launch April 8, 2018 during the 40th anniversary of the federal affirmative action guidelines that opened construction jobs to women.

In addition to her work On Equal Terms, Susan has published poetry including Stanley's Girl and the 20th anniversary edition of We'll Call You If We Need You: Experiences of Women Working Construction (published through Cornell University Press).
