“Earthly Airs and Hearty Beats” will be performed at the Mendelssohn Theater on Friday, September 29, 2018. The performers are Zhou family Band, a group of family musicians that play music of weddings, funerals, and other life cycle rituals. Zhou Family Band attracted international attention through their first Europe tour in 2017, which brought them to five countries and prestigious festivals such as World of Music, Arts and Dance festival (WOMAD). Hailed for its “tremendous energy” by BBC, regarded as “China’s avant-garde” by The Guardian, and selected by SOAS Radio as one of its five favorite acts from the 2017 WOMAD, Zhou Family Band presents an authentic Chinese tradition.

Zhou Family Band (周家班) plays traditional wind and percussion music that have accompanied birth and death celebrations of people in Central-Eastern China for more than 600 years. Coming from Lingbi, Anhui Province, part of the Central Plain area which formed the cradle of Chinese civilization, the Zhou family has been musicians for seven generations, and are bearers of a tradition that represents the cream of Chinese folk music – Bolin Laba, a national intangible cultural heritage of China as declared by UNESCO.

Sexual Harassment in Engineering (October 1, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51305 51305-12044086@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 1, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently published a report on the impact of sexual harassment on the career advancement of women in academic scientific, technical, and medical fields. The report identifies key findings on the causes and impacts of sexual harassment in academia and makes recommendations to address and prevent it.

This event will include a summary of the report, discussion from the report’s co-authors, commentary from disciplinary experts, and Q&A with the audience. A reception will follow.

Welcome by Alec D. Gallimore, Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering, U-M

PANELISTS :
- Gilda A. Barabino,* Daniel and Frances Berg Professor and Dean, Grove School of Engineering, City College of New York
- Alec D. Gallimore, Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering, U-M
- Allison Steiner, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering, and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, U-M

REPORT OVERVIEW & PANEL MODERATION:
- Lilia Cortina,* Associate Director of ADVANCE for the College of LSA; Professor of Psychology, Women’s Studies, and Management and Organizations, U-M
- Anna Kirkland,* Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Women’s Studies, U-M

Preventing and effectively addressing sexual harassment of women in colleges and universities has remained a challenge for decades. More than half of women faculty and staff report having been harassed. Student surveys of university systems show disturbingly similar rates, with 20–50% of women students experiencing sexually harassing behavior perpetrated by faculty or staff.

Persistent sexual harassment in STEM fields, and its adverse impacts on women’s careers, jeopardizes progress in closing the gender gap, damages research integrity, and results in a costly loss of talent. Academic sciences, engineering, and medicine share characteristics that create conditions for harassment, but many findings of the report are not limited to STEM field settings. Other fields within academia can be similarly male-dominated, hierarchical work and learning settings in which abusive cultures may form. Such environments can silence and limit the career opportunities for both the targets of the sexual harassment and bystanders, causing both men and women to leave their fields.

This panel discussion will offer broad discussion of use to any member of the university community or the public interested in sexual harassment in academia

Sexual Harassment in the Academy Panel Discussion Series is presented by IRWG and the Office of Research, with co-sponsorship from: ADVANCE, The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, the College of Literature Sciences, and the Arts, and the College of Engineering

Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

This event is organized by GRIN with generous support from Rackham and in partnership with Taubman College DEI.

Jennifer Brea's Sundance award-winning documentary, Unrest, is a personal journey from patient to advocate to storyteller. Jennifer is 28, working on her PhD at Harvard, and months away from marrying the love of her life when a mysterious fever leaves her bedridden. When doctors tell her it's "all in her head," she picks up her camera as an act of defiance and brings us into a hidden world of millions that medicine abandoned.

This two-part event will convene the campus community to explore alignments between two Presidential initiatives, build recognition for DEI-focused public engagement, and mobilize our communities for future action.

Leaders who are actively engaged with the broader public will discuss how they are working to address today’s critical social justice issues and will share perspectives on how students, staff and faculty can most effectively build partnership outside of the university to drive social change. The panel will be introduced by President Mark Schlissel and moderated by Earl Lewis.

Panelists include Mary Jo Callan (director of the Ginsberg Center); Abdul El-Sayed (former Democratic candidate for Michigan governor and former executive director of the Detroit Health Department and health officer for the City of Detroit); Jim Leija (director of education and community engagement at the University Musical Society); Angela Reyes (executive director and founder of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation); and Luis Trelles (producer of Radio Ambulante at NPR and 2018 Knight-Wallace Fellow)

Following the panel, please join a series of working discussions on critical issues on DEI-focused engagement and formulate action plans to support future efforts.

Sponsored by the National Center for Institutional Diversity; the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; the Office of Academic Innovation; and the Alumni Association.

This film will premiere on Indigenous People’s Day - Monday October 8th - on Free Speech TV and in communities across Turtle Island, the U.S., Canada and Europe. At U-M, the free screening will take place in the Forum Hall (Palmer Commons).

Film Description:
From 2016 – 2017 Standing Rock water protection camps located at the heart of Turtle Island became the largest assembly of Indigenous peoples in recent history. Gathered nations confronted big energy’s extreme extraction through the strength of their ceremonies, histories, and connections. Despite being met with violence, many who brought their best intentions to this historic fight continue to expand their love and sovereignty - while they shift our world away from the trauma and isolation of modern days.

The film is based around prophecy of the Eagle and Condor that originates with nations from the South and features ceremony held at the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) site on Indigenous People’s Day, October 10th, 2016. The ancient prophecy predicted the epic Standing Rock water protection actions – and continues to challenge all to identify and unite our gifts and power.

Annika Pattenaude
About me:
I am 4th year PhD in L&L. I'm a California native, and I love to swim. I study medieval literature, and my dissertation examines (or will examine) the intersection of aesthetics and affect in late medieval poetry.

About my project:
This summer, under the mentorship of Hadji Bakara, I designed a literature course on human rights in the premodern world. To conduct this project, I compiled a bibliography of sources about rights in the classical, medieval, and early modern periods, and then organized select texts by theme: e.g., "Destabilizing the Human" and "Refugees, Exiles, and Aliens." Overall, a main goal of this course is to map a long history of human rights in order to discover how people made claims to or were restricted from rights in the premodern world.

Elinam Agbo
About me:
I am a second year MFA candidate (fiction) in the Helen Zell Writers' Program. I was born in Ghana and moved to the U.S. when I was ten. I grew up in Kansas, and I love Chicago (where I went to college).

About my project:
This summer, I wrote the first draft of a Young Adult novel, exploring black girlhood with a focus on my protagonist's relationship with her mother and her hair. The story was set in a surreal world where bureaucracy meets fairy tale characters, a world adjacent to ours but not quite ours. I shifted between two perspectives, one in prose and the other in verse, and I worked with my faculty mentor, Laura Kasischke, who is well versed in fiction and poetry.

Akosua Afiriyie-Hwedie (presentation via hand-out)
About me:
I'm a 2nd year MFA in poetry. I’m Zambian-Ghanaian and was raised in Botswana. My work is a journey in navigating home as a multitude of places and as more than just a physical space. Home can be many things, a mother, a language, a word etc.

About my project:
My mentor for the summer was Professor Ruth Behar (a cultural anthropologist who specializes in concepts of home, diaspora, displacement, immigration, travel, ethnographic research and methods specific to native anthropological research). With the help of Professor Behar and the Diversity Committee grant, I visited historic sites and interviewed people in both Ghana and Botswana. Thereafter, I produced a collection of poems which expound upon meanings of home (as physical space and beyond), particular to people indigenous to those spaces.

David Wade
About me:
I am a second-year MFA candidate in Fiction from the small rustbelt city of Washington, PA. My interests include hip hop, theology, mixed martial arts, and speculative fiction. My thesis is a collection of short stories about my hometown and the people who’ve never left.

About my project:
This summer, under the mentorship if Van Jordan, I worked on a poetry collection that examined the idea of “the wake” a as perpetual state of melancholy and subjugation unique to the African-American and global black experience found in Christina Sharpe’s monograph, In the Wake, among similar claims by other poets and scholars. The project seeks to challenge the narrative that the black experience is evenly transmuted across generation in perpetuity with no foreseeable expiration date.

Rackham Diversity Allies Program Spring/Summer Mentorship Grants
The Spring/Summer Mentorship Grants are for second, third, and fourth-year PhD L&L, JPEE, and E&WS students and first-year MFA students, and applications are due late in the Winter Semester.

Join the North Campus DEI Collaborative impactXchange–College of Engineering, Stamps School of Art & Design, Duderstadt Center, School of Music, Theater and Dance, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Rackham Student Government in celebration of Diversity Week 2018.

The all day celebration aims to put students in the driver’s seat of decision making. We will explore the topic of VOTING and how voting and not voting impacts students and their peers (students will be able to register to vote too!). Students will learn what they can do in their communities to create change (regardless if they can vote or not). Live performances, exhibition posters on voting, workshops, food, and entertainment will make this event one that must not be missed.

When: Tuesday, October 9, 2018
Where: The Grove and Duderstadt Center
Time: 11:30am-1:00pm
Special Guest: Ruby Sales–Building a Vibrant Youth Culture at 6:30pm in the new Taubman College Commons.
Light refreshments will be served.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales has made the struggle for racial justice one of the centerpieces of her work through the SpiritHouse Project. Recognizing a need to nurture the hope that still resides in young people as well as to revive an intergenerational community and human compassion, in 2016 the SpiritHouse Project introduced Hope Zones.™ They are alternative learning spaces designed to strengthen the hope, courage, reason, and will of young people to individually and collectively stand up for themselves with dignity, clarity and nonviolent persistence. According to the Harvard Gazette, Ruby spoke about the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and shared, “Even in the face of challenges, there are reasons for hope. Freedom must be seen as a constant struggle. We don’t have to give in to despair.”

This presentation is an exploration of the intersections of video game building, meaningful learning, Indigenous and Western cultures through relation-oriented ontologies - rather than aspect- or object- oriented ones. From the tech that is used to the land and waters the event is hosted on - these connections matter, weaving networks of relations across digital and physical heterotopic borders.

For three weeks in the Summer of 2017 and 2018, a group of primarily Indigenous students from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience came together to create a video game based on Hawaiian mo’olelo or storytelling. The Skins 5.0 and 6.0 workshops resulted from the collaboration of multiple organizations including The Initiative for Indigenous Futures (IIF), Kanaeokana, and Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace. These groups contributed funding, curriculum, educators and enthusiasm to provide the physical and mental space necessary for the creation of these relationship networks.

Comics allow us to explain feelings and events in ways that bridge time and space and identity in unexpected ways. Comics can give us a way to tell stories we might not tell in other ways, or which might not be heard if we did. In this two part workshop, we’ll first hear from people about why and how comics worked for their stories, followed by a workshop activity for artists and storytellers to collaborate on telling stories about life with disabilities.

Despite the fact that ADHD is one of the most researched of psychiatric disorders, and neuroimaging studies show that it is a neurobiological disorder, ADHD myths continue to pervade our national discussion, fueled by sensationalized media and the opinions of mental health professionals. For this event, five ADHD experts will come together for a panel discussion to not only set the record straight, but also to share how they work as a team to provide their clients a scaffolding of support. Using a strengths-based, multi-dimensional approach, this team of experts helps students and adults living with ADHD find their paths to healing and personal fulfillment.

Sexual Harassment in Medicine (November 12, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51308 51308-12044090@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 12, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently published a report on the impact of sexual harassment on the career advancement of women in academic scientific, technical, and medical fields. The report identifies key findings on the causes and impacts of sexual harassment in academia and makes recommendations to address and prevent it.

This event will include a summary of the report, discussion from the report’s co-authors, commentary from disciplinary experts, and Q&A with the audience. A reception will follow.

Welcome by Mark Schlissel, President of the University of Michigan

PANELISTS :
- Reshma Jagsi, Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Michigan Medicine; Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine, University of Michigan

- Paula A. Johnson, President of Wellesley College; member of the National Academy of Medicine; National Academies committee co-chair and report co-author

- Timothy R.B. Johnson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Studies, University of Michigan; member of the National Academy of Medicine; National Academies committee member and report co-author

REPORT OVERVIEW & PANEL MODERATION:
- Lilia Cortina, Associate Director of ADVANCE; Professor of Psychology, Women’s Studies, and Management, U-M; National Academies committee member and report co-author

- Anna Kirkland, Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Women’s Studies, U-M; National Academies committee member and report co-author

The panel will offer broad discussion of use to any member of the university community or the public interested in sexual harassment in academia.

Sexual Harassment in the Academy Panel Discussion Series is presented by IRWG and the Office of Research, with co-sponsorship from: ADVANCE, The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, the College of Literature Sciences, and the Arts, and the College of Engineering

We know that mental health concerns are only increasing amongst college students around the country, with many students at UM experiencing anxiety, depression or other mental health challenges on a daily basis. Yet, mental health is so often an unspoken part of the study abroad experience. CGIS, Active Minds, and IPE are partnering for this presentation / panel discussion event in hopes to increase pre-departure awareness of this important topic.

This panel is geared toward our students going abroad and the educators supporting their travels. We will both provide resources and advice, as well as have study abroad alumni share their personal experiences.

This year's MLK Symposium theme, “unravel”, reflects the challenge of disentangling or revealing both personal and institutional –isms (racism, classism, sexism, ableism…). Our individual stories of how we choose to respond to others' biases, and reflect on our own, are an important parts of the solution.

We invite members of the University community to share their brief (2-4 minute) stories through written or spoken word, performance pieces, poems, art, music, or song.

We encourage you to connect your story to the theme of “unravel” and respond to one of the following two prompts...

* Share a moment where you have confronted or become aware of your own internal bias. What process did you use? What made you willing to be vulnerable in exposing a personal bias?

* Tell us of an instance where self-awareness of your own bias equipped you to respond to institutional bias. How did you respond?

This is an opportunity to tell your story, among supportive listeners, because your stories matter!

Please join us for the last DEI speaker of the Fall semester. Deeohn Ferris, JD, is Vice President for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the National Audubon Society. Deeohn is an environmental lawyer whose career connects many fields of study and spans government, industry, the public interest and the civil rights sectors. She has extraordinary experience leading expert teams working on community regeneration and land revitalization with federal agencies, as well as governments, foundations, community coalitions, tribal organizations and indigenous peoples in the US and countries on five continents.

Combining local impact and countrywide reach, Deeohn is a nationally recognized provider of specialized know-how that tackles equity, sustainability, resiliency, and engagement of under-represented, often, racially stratified populations. She has overseen litigation and managed projects involving hundreds of community activists, faith-based leaders and elected officials, organizing working relationships, evaluating science and technical debates, and overcoming obstacles to collaboration and public participation. Deeohn is also an environmental justice pioneer. Her environmental and civil rights knowledge and policy expertise were instrumental to introducing and establishing the field of environmental justice, nationally and globally, to convening the first-ever Congressional hearings, and providing expert legal representation for communities before Congress, federal agencies, the United Nations, the media and the public.
Please join us in Dana 1040 on December 4 at 5pm.

CoE Multicultural Potluck (December 12, 2018 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58228 58228-14444068@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 12, 2018 1:00pm
Location: GG Brown Laboratory
Organized By: Mechanical Engineering Graduate Council

We will be hosting the first-ever CoE Multicultural Potluck. Within Michigan's CoE we're fortunate to have great diversity, but there are seldom opportunities for us students to share our cultures with each other. With this event, we invite students to share a very important aspect of their culture...

FOOD!

Students are encouraged to prepare and bring in dishes from any culture they want and share those dishes potluck-style by giving out samples. Here, we're taking a flexible view of what culture means. It could mean food from a certain region or nation, or just food that you're excited about and want to share with others.

If you are interested in the prospect of bringing or preparing a taste of your culture (or a culture you're fond of!) then please check out the following Google Sheet and consider booking a spot. You bring the food, and we'll take care of the rest!

https://docs.google.com/a/umich.edu/spreadsheets/d/10T_L9A5RUNHyHVa6_xW9_8VERHnQjhgXrdI0Q7bWqD4/edit?usp=drive_web

Of course, you don't need to bring food to participate. If you still want to attend but don't want to bring any food, please RSVP at the following link. RSVP will be required to attend so we can plan resources accordingly.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email us!

Thanks,
