CGIS Winter Advising (May 19, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83938 83938-21619171@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Global and Intercultural Study

As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students, particularly for Winter 2022, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment, pre-health, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! First Step sessions will be offered each day of the event as well. Each info session will be interactive. Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. To get a general idea of participation, please RSVP below and select info sessions that you'd be interested in. We'll send you a Zoom link as we get closer to the event!

DISCLAIMER: With each passing term, a small yet increasing number of our programs seem to offer the possibility of receiving students, so CGIS proceeded with very cautious optimism that students will be able to study abroad in the coming academic year. CGIS and the University of Michigan continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation as it develops worldwide. Parents and other concerned parties who would like to receive this information should ask their students to share the updates with them. Students planning to participate in CGIS programs worldwide are advised to continue to closely monitor the latest developments and to adhere to any national and international public health directives issued by their host country or institution. CGIS will contact students who have opened or submitted an application to a CGIS program if and when updates are available.

Dr. Knute Nadelhoffer (University of Michigan Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Professor Emeritus) will present this year's Bennett Endowed Lecture in Plant & Fungal Ecology: Biological Controls on Forest Soil Organic Matter Accumulation:
Lessons from the DIRT Collaboration.

Globally, soils store more than twice as much carbon in organic forms as exists in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2). Because plant-soil systems, such as northern forests, exchange carbon with the atmosphere, small percentage changes in carbon contents of extensive ecosystems such as temperate forests can lead to significant changes in atmospheric CO2¬¬, a powerful heat-trapping gas that affects global temperatures. In addition to serving as a global carbon reservoir, soil organic matter (SOM) is a critical ecosystem component that affects soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. SOM serves to increase soil water retention, to store, recycle, and release nutrients for forest tree growth, and to protect stream and groundwater quality. Importantly, SOM enhances environmental conditions leading to high levels of biodiversity consisting of complex microbial and faunal communities that serve to maintain ecosystem and human health.

This talk will present results from a network of long-term experiments, referred to as “DIRT” (Detrital Input and Removal Treatments, including a 15-year experiment at the UM Biological Station), which is focused on understanding how forest leaf and root litter function to control SOM accumulations in forest soils.

Remember the days long ago when everyone hung their laundry out on the line to dry -- when folks went "online" without the internet? Instructor Anne Lawrence’s slide presentation will show why she (and so many others) love their clotheslines, will explain the lure of the line, and the lore that grew up around it.

There will be washday history, along with sociological issues, the role of feminism, industrialization, culture, and ecology involved. You may consider the clothesline in ways never before appreciated! The sharing of stories and memories will be encouraged. Let's hang out together -- Anne won't leave you hanging.

Anne has been a Clothesline Historian and Hobbyist for the past 40 years, collecting anything she can find that relates to laundry blowing in the wind on clotheslines, and since retiring, sharing her passion with those who remember.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

Abstract: Models of microbial interactions have been developed in recent years, drawing from taxonomic abundances via amplicon sequencing. Many of these models assume that dynamics through time are primarily driven by pairwise interactions between taxa, but with the drawback that how these interaction strengths may change with environmental context is less than clear. Here we model the consumption and exchange of resources explicitly, and show that these processes imply new results and principles for the stability of ecological communities. We go on to develop stochastic versions of these models, and demonstrate a transition between regimes that resemble neutral and niche-dominated dynamics and static patterns. Finally, I’ll show some recent work on more general stochastic models with individual variation, and their consequences for coexistence and stability.

Veronica Berrocal, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, University of California at Irvine.

Built environment features (BEFs) refer to aspects of the human constructed environment, which may in turn support or restrict health related behaviors and thus impact health. In this talk we are interested in understanding whether the spatial distribution and quantity of fast food restaurants (FFRs) influence the risk of obesity in schoolchildren. Our analysis on the influence of patterns of FFR occurrence on obesity among Californian schoolchildren has indicated that, in 2010, among schools that are consistently assigned to a cluster, there is a lower odds of obesity amongst 9th graders who attend schools with most distant FFR occurrences in a 1-mile radius as compared to others.

The goal of Environmental Statistics Week is to disseminate knowledge of advanced statistical methods most relevant to environmental health research with expert-led discussions on statistical concepts.

Lois Gibbs was raising her family in Love Canal, near Niagara Falls in upstate New York, in 1978 when she discovered that her home and those of her neighbors were sitting next to 20,000 tons of toxic chemicals. That shocking discovery spurred Lois to lead her community in a three-year struggle to protect their families from the hazardous waste buried in their backyards. By trial and error, Lois and her neighbors developed the strategies and methods to educate and organize the community, assess the impacts of toxic wastes on their health, and challenge corporate and government policies on the dumping of hazardous materials. Her leadership led to the relocation of 833 Love Canal households and the formation of the Federal Superfund Program, which is still active today.

Lois is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including The Goldman Environmental Prize and The Heinz Award, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. A frequent public speaker, Gibbs has appeared on 60 Minutes, 20/20, Oprah Winfrey, Good Morning America, and many other television and radio programs. Title: Life under ice: The rise and fall of Lake Erie’s winter algal bloom

Webinar Registration: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1935127688355002379

About the presentation: Ice cover presents a logistical obstacle to our full understanding of function of north temperate ecosystems. Reflecting this, ecosystem models frequently underestimate, or even neglect biological parameters associated with ice cover. Despite the perceived inhospitable environment imposed by cold temperatures and ice cover during winter in Lake Erie, work over the past decade has revealed numerous examples of high biological activity with abundant phytoplankton biomass dominated by psychrophilic, filamentous diatoms. The diatoms are physiologically robust and the diatom bloom persists through early spring, eventually contributing to carbon export in Lake Erie’s central basin. During mild winters, the bloom is reduced, likely due to light limitation coincident with deep wind-aided mixing. These surveys have demonstrated that diatom assemblages possess ice nucleating abilities, a characteristic promoting ice formation and which enables the winter diatoms to maintain a favorable position in the photic zone when the lake is ice covered. Our recent efforts have focused on mechanisms of bloom decline where chytrid parasites and other pathogens are implicated. Broadening the impact of this research has been a unique partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard promoting citizen science in support of winter data collection.

About the speaker: In 2019, Mike McKay joined the University of Windsor where he serves as the Executive Director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research and Professor in the School of the Environment. Mike received undergraduate- and graduate degrees in Biology from Queen’s University at Kingston and McGill University (Montréal), respectively. Upon completion of his doctoral work, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and with the University of Delaware where he served concurrently at the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY. It was during this period that Mike became active in research on aquatic nutrient cycling through his involvement with the ecosystem-scale ocean iron fertilization projects being conducted by scientific personnel from Brookhaven at that time. Mike’s research expanded to include large lakes on his arrival to Bowling Green State University where he served on the faculty for over 21 years studying the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, phytoplankton and bacterial community dynamics and more recently, winter limnology involving research coordination with icebreaking programs of Canadian- and U.S. Coast Guards.

Among Mike’s research honors, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship in 2005 where he was resident at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany) and in 2013, was named Visiting Scholar at the Large Lakes Observatory of the University of Minnesota. He is the author of over 95 peer-reviewed manuscripts, is a co-recipient of the 2019 John Martin award from ASLO and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

STS Speaker. Science-in-Vivo: Experimental Methods for the 'Bananapocalypse (December 6, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86398 86398-21634172@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 6, 2021 4:00pm

Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race Four is a deadly soil-borne fungal disease that has stumped the global banana industry. While pesticides are systematically employed to control the spread of disease on plantations, the failures to develop a chemical control for Fusarium Wilt has exposed the paradigm limits of conventional agricultural science. In this talk, I introduce the notion of ‘science-in-vivo’, a method of experimentation that has emerged in the context of Philippine banana plantations ravaged by the ‘incurable’ fungal disease. Literally ‘science within the living body’, the method combines secular and non-secular thought, and gathers human, nonhuman, and extrahuman forces in ways that break down some of the hegemonic antagonisms that define plantation life. I argue that renewed scientific sensibility offers a way to expand local strategies for transformative activist praxis in a sector where political horizons have only narrowed. The method was inspired, originally, by a series of God-given dreams about microbes in the forests of southern Mindanao.

Bio: Alyssa Paredes is LSA Collegiate Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she will be Assistant Professor in 2022. Her research concerns the human, environmental, and metabolic infrastructures of transnational trade between the Philippines and Japan. Her first book project, preliminarily titled Bananapocalypse: Plantation Commodities and the Conceit of Ecological Externality, identifies the conventions of crop science, agrochemical regulation, market segmentation techniques, and food standards as arenas where actors contend over the commodity chain’s production calculus. Her work appears in Ethnos: Journal of Anthropology, the Journal of Political Ecology, the Journal of Material Culture, as well as in edited collections such as Feral Atlas: The More-than-Human Anthropocene (Stanford, 2020), The Promise of Multispecies Justice (Duke, forthcoming 2022), and the Japanese-language volume 甘いバナナの苦い現実 [The Bitter Reality of Sweet Bananas] (Commons, 2020). She holds a PhD with distinction from Yale University.

Abstract:
Water connects and obligates people to one another and to their environments in this time of ecological reckoning. Water ties, in this presentation, is an analytical term for, first, the ways that people are tied to water and are obliged to care for it, and second, the consequential and patterned ways that people are tied to one another through their relationships to water. In the Florida Everglades, where the world’s largest wetlands restoration project is underway and where pitched battles are fought over the values of agricultural production (especially sugarcane) and ecosystem health, water ties are the underappreciated keys to achieving flourishing with contested waters. Water ties are also political methodology: methodology for ecosystem governance, for Seminole sovereignty, and for ethnography.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

Veins, plumes, and mantles: the slippery form of subterranean water movement in Costa Rica

Abstract:
Among Costa Rican hydrogeologists and water activists there is a longstanding struggle over the most appropriate metaphor to describe subterranean water. Veins (venas) have captured their imagination since at least colonial times when mining and other extractive projects dominated visual renderings of water. Plumes (plumas)have emerged more recently as hydrogeologists try to convey to the public the fragility and volatility of aquifers in danger of chemical contamination. Mantles (mantos) persist as figures that evoke the extended and enveloping character of water as a material substance. Measured against human bodies, human-made disasters, and human needs, these figurations that guide political decisions about harm and well-being. This paper examines the assumptions about collective life in Costa Rica that are written into these figures. I query how and where do these figures collide, and ask whose imagination is privileged in that process?

Managing Melt: Ice, Refrigeration, and Hawaiian Body Politics
Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart, UT Austin – Anthropology

Monday, Feb 21: Open Talks 12-1pm, Grad Workshops 1-3pm
Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95385019774?pwd=N0I1THZGYlQwZi9UT2Q5dFlXSEttdz09

Abstract:
Nearly everything Hawaiʻi residents eat is imported, despite its history of agricultural abundance, and real estate development has encroached on arable farmlands such that a mere 11.6% of food is locally grown. Not only is Hawaiʻi dependent upon imported food, but the added energy costs built-in for maintaining perishables makes its groceries the most expensive in the United States. In this way, cold chain logics offer one way to trace the role that temperature plays in organizing bodies in within the tropics. Examining how freezing and refrigeration technologies function as a critical node of Hawaiʻi’s food system as a structure of settler colonialism, this talk considers what the promises and limits of thermal management might be for decolonial struggles over land and sovereignty. In doing so, Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart asks: how does ‘artificial’ ice and refrigeration constrain the conditions of possibility within movements that call for de-occupation, demilitarization, and the dismantling of the settler state? In what ways does it support activist and movement spaces? And, lastly, what place does refrigeration have within Indigenous futures that aim to move beyond capitalism, settler colonialism, and imperialism, when coldness has played such an infrastructural role in these political systems of oppression?

Abstract
Parables about humans and fish (and water as a medium), abound as cultural markers of power, gender, and stories that encompass narratives of politics as well. Water is a medium that sustains both belief and life. One of its characteristics is as a symbol of power and destiny. In the Upper Nile it carries meaning as a place (point of origin, the spring at Gish), a conduit for travel, a source of food and a link to spirituality. In Orthodox Christian belief it is an allusion to magical revelation, and spirituality and those meanings about human identities are ubiquitous at its source and in its flow. Yet, this is both a fish story and one that reveals conflicting identities of the modern world. It includes the sequencing of that adaptation to geological movement, and the efforts of human engineers to move, store, and redistribute Nile waters in that modern world. The project here is ostensibly a story about a fish, but one that narrates a deeper regional history of environmental and political change in one of the world’s most storied watersheds. This presentation explores symbols of the beliefs and substance of history as a setting for more current issues.

Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities
Teresa Montoya, University of Chicago

Monday, Mar. 7, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm. All parts via Zoom.

Abstract:
On July 16, 1979, one of the uranium mill tailings disposal ponds at the United Nuclear Corporation facility near Church Rock, NM failed. The ruptured mill earth dam released approximately 1100 tons of radioactive solid mill waste and 95 million gallons of acidic mine water into the streams and watersheds of nearby Diné (Navajo) communities. This disaster remains the largest singular release of radioactive material in U.S. history. In the spill’s aftermath—decades later and several miles downstream—I have worked alongside Diné grassroots coalitions on the Navajo Nation in their efforts to confront various forms of water contamination from this toxic disaster. Drawing upon ethnographic and archival material, I explore the various regulatory frameworks through which radioactive exposure is legible and by extension, the legal and political avenues that are made possible or denied. Through these activities, I analyze discourses of risk management, regulatory jurisdiction, and chronic exposure by several state agencies and public officials in their response to community concerns of unsafe water. In doing so, I theorize the arbitrary thresholds of toxicity within larger racialized debates over tribal sovereignty, public health disparity, and environmental justice for Diné communities today.

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring a virtual event to discuss the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Toxic chemicals can harm our health as these substances are present in everyday products (e.g., cleaning products, cookware, housing and infrastructure materials, bedding, toys). Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. However, amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new authorities to require manufacturers provide the data needed for risk assessments. People expect the outcomes of implementing our environmental laws to be equitable health protection for the public from environmental harms. Yet, key components of risk evaluations seem complex and thus inaccessible to the public. Our goal is to demystify the process of assessing the science to move toward evidence-based safeguards communities want for public health.

Our virtual event will examine key issues from a series of recent scientific workshops. We will present a case study of applying the principles to treating cancer and non-cancer health effects in similar manners in the risk assessment for the chemical perchloroethylene (PCE). We will explore the use of probabilistic assessments in TSCA risk evaluations. The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Speakers and discussants include:
* Regina Strong (Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE));
* Wilma Subra (Technical Director, Louisiana Environmental Action Network);
* Wendy Heiger-Bernays, PhD (Clinical Professor, Department of Environmental Health, Boston University);

Sea Changes: Experimental Collaborations across the Indian Ocean
Vivian Choi, St. Olaf College

Monday, Mar. 21, Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
In-person in ISR-Thompson 6050
Presentations will also be available online via Zoom

Abstract:
Inspired by ethnographic accounts recounting the colors of the Indian Ocean in Eastern Sri Lanka, this talk explores the colors of the Indian Ocean, as social, political, and material reflections of life and death. While oceans are almost always described and associated with the color blue, these descriptions of past disasters — the black sludgy waters of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the red, blood-tinged sea from civil war violence — harken to the Indian Ocean’s significance as a reminder and a harbinger of danger. Scaling up, I then turn to ocean color science, which charts and models the presence or absence of phytoplankton as an indicator of the rapidly warming Indian Ocean basin, changing its hues to a deeper green and signaling broader concerns for and relations with biological life, weather, atmosphere and land. What might a broader spectrum of hues offer in contrast to dominant economic and security narratives of bluing? What might attention to Indian Ocean colors offer to examine the social and ecological impacts of planetary risk and danger?

Detroit River Story Lab: Community Narratives and Carbon Economies
Rebecca Hardin and David Porter, University of Michigan

Monday, Mar. 28, Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
This event will be held via Zoom.

Abstract:
U-M's Detroit River Story Lab is comprised of interdisciplinary faculty, partnering with a wide array of Michigan based organizations in efforts to reconnect residents with the Detroit River. The Story Lab uses the term “narrative infrastructure” to refer both to the fabric of shared stories that binds a given community together and the pipelines and platforms by which these stories are circulated and elevated. For decades, the needs of Detroit riverside communities’ have been framed in terms of physical infrastructure (transportation, utilities, etc). Today, community leaders and scholars alike have recognized how the arts, civic life, local journalism, and public history are also critical to social cohesion and vitality. Alongside Detroit's legacies of inequity due to pollution, the privatization of shorelands, the bulldozing of neighborhoods, and mass-incarceration, has come the loss of sustaining stories about the Detroit River--or resident’s stories for framing sustainability for the city's and region's future. Learning from local residents who do (or who seek to) engage with its waters, the Story Lab partnership seeks to strengthen the narrative infrastructure of the Detroit River corridor with respect to its indigenous sacred sites, roles in the Underground Railroad, and long histories of water activism, among other themes. We work together through independent media, software platforms, innovative secondary and higher education curricula, and interpretive programing in public spaces. We are also developing youth participatory research trainings in river heritage, ecosystem regeneration, carbon accounting and equitable landscape design, to encourage direct personal ties with the river as well as community identification and advocacy along the corridor. Drawing from pathbreaking recent scholarship on Detroit's history and collaborative sustainability science, we work toward possible narrative transformation from the one and only "Motor City” to a preeminent "River City" worthy of emulation as an international and intercultural confluence of innovations in climate change adaptation, active learning and environmental and social justice.
