Research shows that when students worry about fulfilling a negative stereotype related to certain social identities, it can hurt their learning (a phenomenon known as stereotype threat). Research also shows that an instructor’s beliefs about their own and their students’ intelligence and ability impact the classroom environment. In this interactive session, participants will reflect on instructor and student social identities and learn about strategies for mitigating stereotype threat, impostor syndrome, and encouraging a growth mindset for students in their classes.

Freedom Writings: Black Abolitionists and the Struggle Against "Race Hatred" in Brazil - 1870-1890 (March 9, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72781 72781-18077119@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 9, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Department of History

How do you think about the experiences of freedom among black people in Brazil before the end of slavery in 1888? Interested in this question, this lecture presents a reflection on the experiences of free and literate black men, who were active in the press, as well as in the political-cultural landscape of the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ferreira de Menezes, Luiz Gama, Machado de Assis, José do Patrocinio, Ignacio de Araújo Lima, Arthur Carlos and Theophilo Dias de Castro are the central subjects in this narrative, along with so many other “free men of color” who sought in different ways to conquer and maintain their spaces in the public debate about the Brazil’s paths, while relying on the sustainability of their own individual projects. Against the grain of “ race hatred” daily practices, they not only contributed to debates on daily, abolitionist, black and literary newspapers, but also led the creation of resistance, confrontation and dialogue tools and mechanisms.

Ana Flávia Magalhães Pinto is an adjunct professor in the Department of History at the University of Brasília. She received her PhD in History from the State University of Campinas, her MA in History from the University of Brasília, and her BA in Journalism from The University Center of Brasília. Pinto has developed research articulating knowledge in the areas of History, Communication, Literature and Education, with an emphasis on political-cultural performance of black thinkers, black press, abolitionism and experiences of black freedom and citizenship in the slavery period and post-abolition in Brazil and elsewhere in the African Diaspora.

This lecture will take place on Monday, March 9, at 4:00pm in 1014 Tisch Hall.

Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Engineering design is complex, where each phase is dependent on the others and iteration occurs with and across these phases. Further, a successful design outcome hinges on foundational work done during the "front-end” of design processes, which includes problem definition, deep needs and stakeholder assessments using design ethnography, requirements development, and idea generation. Research has shown that experts develop both conscious and subconscious design strategies that impact success, and that novices often lack strategies and the ability to successfully implement them. This seminar will discuss investigations of strategies in front-end design, ways these strategies can be translated to design and education tools, and the role of front-end design in broadening recognition of skills that engineering includes.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dr. Shanna Daly is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering. She has a B.E. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering Education from Purdue University. Her research characterizes front-end design practices across the student to practitioner continuum, uses these findings to develop tools to support design best practices, and studies the impact of front-end design tools on design success. She focuses on divergent and convergent thinking processes, including concept generation and development and problem space exploration, how to foster creativity in engineering work, and processes to understand social and cultural elements of the contexts in which engineering work occurs and integrate them into decision making. Her studies often involve both professional and educational contexts and collaborations across disciplines with scholars in engineering, education, industrial design, and psychology.

Project Management Certification (March 15, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73563 73563-18261071@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 15, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 15 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, March 29 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)
Sunday, April 5 (noon - 4:30 pm, Ross R-0420)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for April 26, 2020 (11:00 am) at the Ross School of Business, R-0320. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skillset to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
http://myumi.ch/dO5Nl

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B, and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: ICPSR at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research

In this webinar, co-organized by the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), we will take a look at ICPSR’s data archive from a “geospatial” perspective. This webinar is free and open to anyone interested in accessing data or services related to social science research and/or wants to learn more about geospatial aspects of these data.

The webinar will consist of an overview of AAG and ICPSR, followed by a demo on different ways of searching for geography-related data in ICPSR’s archive and a few examples of data containing geospatial identifiers. Finally, a short overview of other scholarly services at ICPSR will be provided, such as the development of ICPSR’s geospatial virtual data enclave (GVDE) infrastructure, leadership and training for the social science research community in data access, curation, methods of research data analysis, and guidance to members about managing their data responsibly and ethically to support research.

Presenters: Bing She (ICPSR), Coline Dony (AAG), and Stuart Hutchings (ICPSR) will take any questions from attendees related to searching and accessing ICPSR data as well as questions on how to harness the geospatial component in these research data. If you are interested to read more details about the AAG or ICPSR’s, and their data archive, we recommend this recent AAG Newsletter article: http://news.aag.org/2019/12/icpsr-provides-access-to-carefully-curated-geography-related-data/

This virtual workshop will also be offered at the Annual Meeting of the AAG in Denver, more info at this link: http://myumi.ch/518WB

Postponed - Why I Fight (March 26, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71813 71813-17888049@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 26, 2020 7:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

This event has been postponed. Details TBA.

Why I Fight, a theatrical adaptation of the 2019 Michigan Quarterly Review novelette by James Munro Leaf, dramatizes the perils of being defined by a mental illness and being caught in the psychiatric system. It probes the presumption of labels and the complex dynamics of power, dehumanization, and abuse in clinical settings. Creative director Gillian Eaton and actor Malcolm Tulip, faculty of the U-M School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, engage several of their students in this production at the Residential College’s Keene Theater (dates TBA).

Based on collaboration with the staff at the U-M Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program and other University colleagues, a series of panels on mental illness and the arts follow each theatrical performance. Panelists will expand on themes in Why I Fight and invite conversation with audience members. Individuals and family members who live with mental illness; U-M faculty conducting psycho-social, public health, and biomedical research; mental health practitioners and community advocates, including the arts community, will explore the roles of creativity and nature for healing. The panels will be moderated by Dr. Melvin McInnis, Director of the Prechter Program, and other U-M mental health experts. A catered reception and information tables for resources in the arts and mental wellness organizations accompany each performance. (Please see the full list of panelists for more information).

A series of associated events and workshops, free and open to the public, are scheduled for the weekend.

Project Management Certification (March 29, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73563 73563-18261072@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 29, 2020 12:00pm

This webinar applies to all researchers, including grads and postdocs who are currently or planning to collect data for research on drug use, alcohol, addiction, HIV, tobacco, and other related topics. This presentation offers a nice overview of how NAHDAP and ICPSR can help to support research and maximize the impact that researchers' data can have on their community. Also, this webinar will give an overview of how you can share your data with the archive, using ICPSR’s deposit system.

The National Addiction & HIV Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) has over 500 studies on its website that cover topics related to drug use, alcohol, addiction, HIV, tobacco, and more.

We will discuss why it is important to archive and share research, describe how to prepare data for deposit, and walk through how to submit your data and documentation with NAHDAP. The webinar will also cover the benefits of depositing data with ICPSR, including long-term preservation, curation, worldwide dissemination, bibliographic citations, and usage information.

Presenter: Amy Mehraban Pienta is a Research Scientist at ICPSR. She is also a research affiliate of the University of Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging and the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan. At ICPSR, she oversees collection development and directs several large data archiving projects. Pienta has studied women's retirement behavior, the joint retirement behavior of married couples, and the relationship between various social statuses and health. She directs the National Addiction and HIV Data Archive Program funded by NIDA and the Archive of Disability Data to Enable Policy research funded by NIH.

A Data Scientist Plays Games (April 3, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74087 74087-18518836@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 3, 2020 3:00pm
Location:
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

This event will be hosted online via Zoom

A Data Scientist Plays Games:  This is a presentation broken down into two parts.  The first is how to use mathematical techniques to analyze classic card and board games, and the second part is how data science techniques were applied in real life to support games on the Facebook platform.  This presentation is about 1.5 hours, with a target audience probably suited to CS/software engineering.  It’s light-hearted and fun.

Nick Berry, a native of the UK, has lived in Seattle for the last 25 years. He was educated as a rocket scientist and aircraft designer, graduating with a Masters Degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

Upon graduation, he joined a group of friends to form a software company, specializing in electronic mapping and route planning. This company was grown organically, and earned an unprecedented number of awards and accolades, including the British Design Award and The Queen’s Award for Technology, presented by Her Majesty in 1991. In 1994 Nick was recognized by the Sunday Times Magazine as “One of the top 50 entrepreneurs of the decade”. In 1994, after the company had grown to 50 people worldwide, it was sold to Microsoft.

Nick moved to America with the sale and spent 14 years working for Microsoft, the last ten of which were in the Microsoft Casual Game team. During his tenure, he filed a variety of patents for Microsoft, and represented Microsoft at various conferences and speaking engagements.

After leaving Microsoft, he joined RealNetworks to work as the GM of customer analytics for their games division, GameHouse.

After GameHouse, Nick spent five years as a Data Scientist, working for Facebook in their Seattle office.

In addition to his engineering expertise, Nick is passionate about data privacy and holds a CIPP qualification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He is an active member of the privacy community and speaks at various events about the legal and ethical aspects of data collection, use, and destruction.

In July 2013, Nick gave a TEDx talk about Passwords and the Internet, and in 2015 was nominated by GeekWire as Geek-of-the-week. In 2019 he was recognized as one of the 50 over 50 in the video games industry.

Project Management Certification (April 5, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73563 73563-18261073@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 5, 2020 12:00pm

Project Management Certification (April 26, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73563 73563-18261074@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 26, 2020 11:00am

In the rapidly changing world of education today, it is comforting to look back on the ‘good old days’ of the one-room school. Michigan has more one-room schools than nearly any other state. Some of them are still functioning. We will look at the architecture, curricula, rules for students and teachers, and the role school played in the life of the community. We will focus especially on the Geddes Townhall School. In 1987, the Townhall School was moved from its original site on Morgan Road in Pittsfield Township to the campus of Eastern Michigan University. Our Instructor, Rochelle Balkam, will guide us on the school’s journey as it made its way, foot by foot, to its present site. Attendees will be encouraged to share personal stories and memories of one-room schools. Rochelle Balkam taught U.S. state and local history and college prep government at Ypsilanti High School for 36 years.

ISR Insights Speaker Series:
The Kids are Not All Right: Educational Inequalities in the Time of COVID-19

Presenter: Pamela Davis-Kean, Professor of Psychology and Research Professor at ISR

Wednesday, May 20
11am
https://umich.zoom.us/j/97584475822

With schools closed due to the COVID19 virus, the teaching and learning environments for children have now merged into one place--the home. With schools being the "great equalizer" for education opportunities, what does it mean for families to provide assistance and much of the teaching during the quarantine and what challenges will schools face if they are able to open in the fall? Dr. Davis-Kean will discuss her research on the inequalities in educational opportunities and what that means for families, schools, and children as this unprecedented crisis is potentially increasing achievement gaps across the country.

This webinar is the first in a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu.
