The Residential College 2020-2021 Robertson Memorial Lecture

Award-Winning Writer, Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor and RC Alumna, Laura Kasischke

"The News from Poetry: In an Era of False Facts and True Fallacies, What's to be Found in Art?”

March 3, 2021 via Zoom
4 - 5:30pm, with an online reception to follow
Register at https://myumi.ch/yKA8b

This talk will explore the ways in which art crosses borders and boundaries, both personal and global, erases political divisions to unite generations and cultures, to speak to all genders and races, to erase religious and economic divisions, while traveling eternally and generously (and for free!) from continent to continent, century to century, enduring through crises and chaos, disease and despair, to bring us the truths without which we will die.

Laura Kasischke is a graduate of the Residential College and is now proud to be an instructor of creative writing in it as well as in the English Department, where she is the Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor. She has published eleven collections of poetry, nine novels, a novella, and a collection of short stories. Her work has been translated into over a dozen languages, and three of her novels have been made into feature length films. The recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rilke Award for Poetry, and numerous teaching awards, Kasischke’s twelfth collection of poetry, Lightning Falls in Love, will be published in September.

Presented by the Residential College, celebrating 50 years of the Creative Writing & Literature Program

The Robertson Memorial Lecture is an annual Residential College event made possible by a gift honoring Professor James H. Robertson and Jean B. Robertson, the first Dean of the Residential College and his wife.

This event is free and open to the public.

DEI in Engineering Pedagogy - Find Your Students (March 5, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82451 82451-21100197@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 5, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Civil and Environmental Engineering

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are central and defining components of pedagogy. When we don’t explicitly consider DEI in our courses (syllabi, assignments, exams, grades) we end up actively contributing to an oppressive, inequitable monoculture. One of most helpful and inclusive practices we can cultivate as teachers is to listen deeply and compassionately. Drawing from research on cognition, learning and epistemology as well as my own experience as a researcher and teacher, I have a few suggestions for how to use listening as a teaching tool. All teaching requires a contract between the teachers and the taught, and the default (historical and tacit) contract puts undue and inequitable burdens on our students. It is our responsibility as educators to change our practices to address these inequities.

Motivation and Identity as Signals of Systemic Problems in Engineering Education (March 10, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82513 82513-21114065@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 10, 2021 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

There is a well-documented history of systemic engineering education problems ranging from a persistently chilly climate to a burgeoning mental health crisis. Outcomes of these problems include but are not limited to increased attrition, decreased learning, and reduced engineering innovation resulting from a homogenous engineering population. While these measures provide concrete evidence of systemic problems, they do not provide clear targets for change or an early warning system of how systemic problems influence students before crucial decision points.

To address the limitations of existing engineering education outcome measures, measures of how students internalize engineering experiences are needed. Students' motivations for engineering tasks and identifications as engineers can fill this gap as they are contextually responsive and connected to educational outcomes such as deep learning, student retention, and task persistence. Additionally, students' educational experiences directly influence their motivations and identities.

Informed by specific theories of motivation and identity (future time perspective and engineering role identity, respectively), this presentation describes how students' motivations and identities are shaped by their engineering education experiences and shape engineering education cultures. Specifically, I will discuss the homogenization of undergraduates' motivations and identities; the connections between motivation and identity and experiences of discrimination and bias; and the identity and motivationally undermining experiences of engineering graduate students. I will conclude by discussing actionable steps to shift engineering education defaults to foster students' motivations and identities.

Biographical Sketch: Dr. Adam Kirn is an Associate Professor of Engineering Education in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. His research focuses on the ways students' motivations and identities shape and are shaped by their engineering education experiences. The results of this work seek to implement evidence-based practices to create educational defaults that foster student success and thriving. Adam has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, an M.S. in Bioengineer, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education from Clemson University.

Embracing Our Artistic Selves: Navigating Times of Crisis and Addressing Inequity (March 16, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80488 80488-20728307@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 16, 2021 3:30pm

As a scholar focused on addressing equity within arts education, Dr. Fitzpatrick draws upon her formative experiences as a white teacher of students of color to examine systemic injustice within educational spaces. Within this workshop, she will encourage attendees to first connect with their own artistic selves, considering the ways that the arts are woven within their own life’s story. Following a journey to reconsider their positionality with regard to the arts, attendees will examine the ways that human beings use the arts to address injustice, particularly at moments of crisis such as those we are experiencing today. Equity in arts education will be examined from this broader perspective, with each participant reflecting on their own journey within educational spaces as it relates to identity and marginalization.

An integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy, social change, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of wellbeing and focus. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.

Kate Fitzpatrick-Harnish, PhD is Associate Professor of Music Education for the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan. Before coming to U-M in the fall of 2008, Fitzpatrick served as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Louisville. Fitzpatrick is an active and prolific researcher, focusing on the experiences of those who have been historically marginalized in music education. Her research has been published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Southwestern Musician, the Music Educators Journal, and the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, in addition to numerous book chapters. Her book, Urban Music Education: A Practical Guide for Teachers, was published in 2015 by Oxford University Press. Fitzpatrick has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and is a member of the Music Education Advisory Board for the Save the Music Foundation. She is the past national elected chair of the Social Sciences Special Research Interest Group for the National Association of Music Education, and also serves as a frequent clinician and guest conductor with bands across the United States. An avid supporter of public school music programs, she is the former director of instrumental music at Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio, where she directed the district’s largest band and orchestra program and was awarded the Brass Band of Columbus’ 2003 God and Country Award, recognizing her “outstanding, sensitive leadership of young people.”

From the speaker's bio:

Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom is an award-winning author, researcher, educator, and cultural critic whose work has been recognized nationally and internationally for the urgency and depth of her incisive critical analysis of technology, higher education, class, race, and gender.

The foundation for Tressie’s first book, Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy, was formed by dissertation research for her doctorate from Emory University’s Laney Graduate School. In Lower Ed, Tressie questions the fundamental narrative of American education policy. In 2019, Tressie released Thick: and Other Essays. The collection has been described as “essential,” and the Chicago Tribune calls Tressie, “the author you need to read now.” Dorothy Roberts compares reading it to “holding a mirror to your soul and to that of America.” Thick was the winner of the Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize and was a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award.

Tressie serves on dozens of academic and philanthropic boards and publishes widely on issues of inequality, work, higher education and technology. She is an associate professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (UNC). She was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 2020.

Tressie also co-hosts Hear to Slay with Roxane Gay, a podcast with an intersectional perspective on celebrity, culture, politics, art, life, love, and more.

What: The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) student chapter invites you to our virtual event on March 23, 2-3 pm. If you are interested in pursuing a career in education, please join us! We have invited several panelists who used their STEM graduate degrees to pursue teaching, in both community and university settings. Each panelist will discuss their role, how they chose their career path, how they spend their time, and their favorite and least favorite aspects of their job. We will then create breakout rooms, so graduate students can network with panelists more personally and informally. We hope this event will help inform students about the roles and responsibilities of different education-centered careers and discover what they might be interested in. Panelists include:
Susan Ipri Brown, Director of ExploreHope (works with college students as they gain pre-professional experience working with younger K–12 students) and lecturing professor at Hope College
Joanna Thielen, Engineering Librarian at University of Michigan

As a sociologist who has been working in STEM and Engineering Education for 18 years, and who isn’t on the tenure track, Liz will share a little bit about a few different areas (Research, Evaluation, and Service) that she has focused on in her career.  Assets-based frameworks for understanding student experience are receiving more and more visibility these days and Liz’s work has used critical race theory Community Cultural Wealth (Samuelson & Litzler, JEE 2016) to understand the ways minoritized engineering undergraduates deployed their cultural assets to persist in engineering. She is also now working on further Community Cultural Wealth research with her colleagues on the PNW-LSAMP project.  She will also talk about using her social science research skills to conduct high quality program evaluation of projects focused on improving DEI in STEM.  Finally, she’ll share about the work of the ASEE Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, of which she is the current chair. CDEI is a great resource for the community and also a wonderful opportunity to develop new connections with colleagues while providing important service to the engineering education field.

This workshop will be interactive and will focus on teaching for equity and inclusion.

How can instructors deliberately cultivate learning environments where all students feel valued, respected, and supported in their learning? This interactive synchronous session will provide structured opportunities for instructors to reflect on their goals and practices related to inclusion and equity, consider how to apply key research-based inclusive teaching principles to their f2f and remote teaching, and exchange ideas with colleagues to support the deliberate cultivation of inclusive learning environments.

We highly encourage anyone who is in or plans to be in a teaching role to participate in the workshop. Alongside faculty members, this includes postdocs and graduate students.

A Zoom link for the workshop will be added closer to the event date.

Centering People and DEI in Engineering Research (March 26, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83189 83189-21290776@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 26, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Civil and Environmental Engineering

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential for a modern workforce and indicators of the development and sustainability of an industry. Construction is yet to be considered a fully diverse, equitable, and inclusive industry sector (Sang and Powell 2012) due to pervasive structural prejudices and unconscious biases. The construction workforce is dominated by men; in the US, women make up only 1/10 of the overall construction workforce (CPWR 2018) even though 50.8% of the US population are females and 21.9% of civil engineering bachelor’s degrees in the US were earned by females over the last two decades (Hickey and Cui 2020). These statistics demonstrate the lack of gender equality within the construction industry (Navarro-Astor et al. 2017).

Furthermore, challenges related to masculinity, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, language, age, and other stereotypes have negatively impacted the experience of underrepresented groups working within the construction industry. With the high turnover rate and increased labor shortage across different work classifications, construction organizations must overcome the aforementioned challenges and to achieve and sustain a safe, productive, and inclusive work environment. Inclusion is essential at work and results in everyone having the opportunity to fully apply themselves, contribute to the success of the company, and be valued for their specific skills, experience, and vision.

During the presentation, Dr. Simmons will discuss her funded interdisciplinary construction engineering and management research which centers people across three themes: DEI, interactions between humans and technology, and competency development via education and training. She will also describe her motivation for this work from her perspective as an African-American woman with decades of experience in the construction industry.

Denise R. Simmons, Ph.D., PE, PMP, LEED-AP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida. She has over ten years of construction and civil engineering experience working for energy companies and as a project management consultant; nearly 15 years of experience in academia; and extensive experience leading and conducting multi-institutional, workforce-related research and outreach. She is a leader in research investigating professional formation of civil engineers, with an increasing focus on project managers and the practical strategies that transform and sustain inclusive and productive organizations. While overseeing the Simmons Research Lab, her current research focuses on three areas: diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); interactions between humans and technology; and competency development via education and training.

Big Business and Political Power: The Benefits of Fragmentation (March 26, 2021 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83125 83125-21274903@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 26, 2021 1:30pm

Abstract:

It is broadly accepted among political scientists, political sociologists, and social movement theorists that a unified group will have a higher probability of success than a group that experiences internal divisions or fragmentation. Similarly, it has been assumed that in a society with a relatively unified elite, the elite will experience disproportionately high benefits relative to the larger population. I take issue with this claim. In the mid-twentieth century, large American corporations exhibited a relatively high level of unity but the relative economic benefits accruing to the elite were at historic lows. In more recent years, American big business has become increasingly fragmented, yet the economic benefits that these elites have received have reached historic highs, and the average American’s standard of living has stagnated. Drawing on Padgett and Ansell, I introduce the concept of inadvertent robust action to explain how a relatively fragmented, disorganized elite can reap benefits that exceed those that its more unified counterparts experienced in an earlier era.

Using Artificial Intelligence for Optimal Truck Platooning under Uncertainties (March 31, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82674 82674-21155688@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 31, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Truck platooning is the process of using connected vehicle technology to join two or more trucks in a convoy. Platooning is associated with two, major societal benefits: environmental, through lowered fuel consumption, CO2 emission, and traffic efficiency, and safety improvement, through automated driving. Quantification of fuel consumption in platoons depends on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the system, specifically the resistance or drag force of trucks. While optimization of fuel consumption is pivotal in truck platooning, analysis of CFD is computationally expensive, especially when uncertainties are present, due to geometrical variability of trucks and platoons as well as in wind magnitude and direction.

This research proposes an artificial intelligence-based surrogate model which enables near real-time optimization of platoon configurations based on fuel consumption and impacts on pavement conditions. Attendees will learn how a deep neural network (DNN) model can be trained using data from CFD simulations that utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy Book Talk with Editors (April 12, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83151 83151-21282830@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 12, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies

Join us for a conversation with Asian American Studies Professors, Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis (San Francisco State University) and Dr. Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde (University of California, Davis), about their book Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy (Rutgers University Press, 2019). Moderated by Prof. Emily P. Lawsin (University of Michigan)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Asian American women scholars experience shockingly low rates of tenure and promotion because of the particular ways they are marginalized by the intersectionalities of race and gender in academia. Although Asian American studies critics have long since debunked the model minority myth that constructs Asian Americans as the ideal academic subject, university administrators still treat Asian American women in academia as though they will simply show up and shut up. Consequently, because silent complicity is expected, power-holders will punish and oppress Asian American women severely when they question or critique the system. However, change is in the air. Fight the Tower is a continuation of the Fight the Tower movement, which supports women standing up for their rights to claim their earned place in academia and to work for positive change for all within academic institutions. The essays provide powerful portraits, reflections, and analyses of a population often rendered invisible by the lies that sustain intersectional injustices in order to operate an oppressive system. https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/fight-the-tower/9781978806368

Bios:
Dr. Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde is an associate professor of Asian American Studies and the founding director of the New Viet Nam Studies Initiative at the University of California, Davis. She is the author of Transnationalizing Viet Nam: Community, Culture, and Politics in the Diaspora, co-founder of the social justice movement, Fight the Tower, and co-editor of Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy.

Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis is a professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. She is co-editor of War Baby/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art and Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy, and co-author of the definition of critical mixed race studies.

Assessing the Progress of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives in the College of Engineering: Student Perceptions of the Climate at the University of Michigan (April 14, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83292 83292-21367800@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

The University of Michigan College of Engineering is nearing the end of its five-year strategic plan to improve the climate on campus with regards to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). As part of that plan, focus groups were held with students across every department and program in the College of Engineering, to gather qualitative data that can serve as metrics to consider how the DEI strategic plan is progressing. Over thirty focus groups were held with more than 220 undergraduate and graduate students across the College in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Students were asked about various elements of their perception of DEI, including factors that impacted their sense of inclusion, if they had been treated differently based on their identity, and their perceptions of the College and their department with regards to diversity. The data collected in these focus groups illuminates the nuance and complexity of the engineering student experience, and how that experience, and their perceptions of DEI in the College, can vary based on their identities and home department.

This presentation will examine the roots of deep learning by exploring early learning in indigenous forager communities in Cameroon and in the Americas. We will redefine “education” away from “schooling” and towards developing independence. We will explore play-based learning, adult roles in facilitating it, and individual versus collective orientations of education through a cross-cultural lens. Participants will gain understanding of diverse learning pathways in early childhood and strategies to support deep learning at home. This study group led by Sarah Strader will meet Wednesday April 21. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

In this webinar, Michael Weiss and John Diamond will discuss MDRC’s The Higher Education Randomized Controlled Trial (THE-RCT) restricted-access dataset, recently released at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). THE-RCT is the largest individual-participant dataset from higher education randomized controlled trials to date, containing de-identified data from more than 25 MDRC random assignment evaluations encompassing 50 higher education institutions and 65,000 students! MDRC researchers are currently using this database to explore research questions such as:

• What happens to program effects after the program ends?
• Which program components (for example, enhanced advising, financial support, or tutoring) are associated with larger improvements in student success?
• What sized improvements in student success can various programs reasonably expect to achieve?

MDRC and ICPSR hope this dataset will inspire new scholarship that will help improve outcomes for low-income, underrepresented, and underprepared students, who have long been a focus of MDRC’s higher education studies. The dataset will continue to grow as MDRC and other organizations conduct additional higher education RCT studies, making it a more useful resource over time. We hope that you can attend this webinar to learn more about this exciting new resource!

This webinar is free and open to the public. This webinar will be recorded. The recording will be available on the ICPSR YouTube page.

PROTEST: Justice for Daunté Wright (April 23, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83789 83789-21524504@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 23, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Diag - Central Campus
Organized By: Association of Black Social Work Students

The University of Michigan has ignored police brutality and systemic racism for too long! Join the protest to hold them accountable. We will be creating shirts on-site, please bring a shirt to participate. We will be meeting in the Diag then the march will continue throughout campus.

Purpose

The unjust and unnecessary death of Daunté Wright is one of the most recent examples of how systemic racism has claimed the life of yet another Black person. We, the School of Social Work Community, are responding to this national, pervasive problem by saying “enough is enough,” and we need to make system-level change in our own sphere of influence. The University of Michigan must urgently move towards system-level changes by promoting more anti-racist practices and policies in our community. The University of Michigan, with its abundance of resources, should also be taking concrete actions to support the family and loved ones of Daunté Wright and the countless others who have lost someone to police brutality.

Justice for Daunté Wright looks like supporting his family as they deal with this traumatic loss; it looks like respecting his life enough to call his death a murder, not an accident. Justice for Daunté Wright looks like holding the police officer who murdered him fully accountable, and, more broadly, it looks like working to dismantle the systemic problems that lead to police brutality. While it is easy to point to implicit bias or a lack of training, the root cause of police terrorism and other systems that disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations is hatred in the form of racism. Unfortunately, higher education is a system steeped in racism as well. Many BIPOC students are harmed while pursuing their education, and many White students move through their educational experience without learning how they are perpetuating oppression. These problems impact students, faculty, and staff.

As students in the School of Social Work, we have identified many ways that our school harms our BIPOC community members, and we know similar problems exist throughout the University. Similarly, we have identified many missed opportunities to prepare students to exit the University with the skills and knowledge to be anti-racist and disrupt cycles of harm. These are the ways systemic racism continues, and this is part of the reason we fail to make meaningful progress on complex issues like police brutality.

We demand that the University of Michigan uses its power as a leading university to take immediate action to support Daunté Wright’s family. We demand that the School of Social Work take direct action to dismantle systemic racism in our community. We demand the University broadly considers how the issues that exist in the microcosm of the School of Social Work exist University-wide. We demand that the University of Michigan and School of Social Work adopt intentional practices to counteract the harm imposed on the BIPOC Community. Enough is enough!

Beyond the Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Changes in Education
Wednesday, May 12 at 1pm EDT
https://umich.zoom.us/j/96351558688

At the end of the school year in 2020 parents, educators, and researchers, wondered how to deal with the “COVID slide” related to achievement and gains in learning due to schools shifting to virtual learning across the country. What we did not know at the time is that many schools would struggle to open at all in the Fall of 2020 and online and remote learning would continue to be one of the primary ways that children were educated for the rest of the 2020-21 school year. Today, the question remains: What will parents, educators, and researchers need to consider regarding achievement and learning gains as children are likely to return to in-person schooling in Fall 2021? Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean will discuss her research on how homeschooling was discussed on social media, the issues related to “holding back” or repeating a grade in primary school, and how new proposed policies for free community college may be important for helping those in secondary education get extra time to develop skills for entry into a four-year college.

The CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series returns this May with Professor Alexandre Bayen, the Liao-Cho Professor of Engineering at UC Berkeley! This talk investigates Lagrangian (mobile) control of traffic flow at local scale (vehicular level), and how self-driving vehicles will change traffic flow patterns. Professor Bayen describes approaches based on deep, reinforcement learning presented in the context of enabling mixed-autonomy mobility. This lecture also explores the gradual and complex integration of automated vehicles into the existing traffic system. Attendees will learn the potential impact of a small fraction of automated vehicles on low-level traffic flow dynamics, using novel techniques in model-free, deep reinforcement learning, in which the automated vehicles act as mobile (Lagrangian) controllers to traffic flow.

Illustrative examples will be presented in the context of a new, open-source computational platform called FLOW, which integrates state-of-the-art microsimulation tools with deep-RL libraries on AWS EC2. Interesting behavior of mixed autonomy traffic will be revealed in the context of emergent behavior of traffic: https://flow-project.github.io/

From Rescue to Rebuild: Developing a National ECE System That Works (June 3, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83910 83910-21611029@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 3, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Education Policy Initiative

Between historic bipartisan investments to stabilize and expand access to child care in 2020 and new proposals from Congress and the Biden Administration, the nation is poised to significantly increase access to quality early childhood education (ECE). These investments are acutely needed to ensure that all children—particularly children from families with low incomes—have access to high-quality ECE; working and middle class families have access to affordable care; and early educators are supported and adequately compensated.

As Congress and the Administration consider their next major investments in ECE, however, they need a vision for a new and better system. How do we ensure that our many early childhood programs—including child care subsidies, Head Start, state preschool, and special education programs—can be a system of coherent support from birth through early elementary? Experts will address this question in an upcoming webinar, “From Rescue to Rebuild: Developing a National ECE System That Works.” The webinar will focus on long-term federal policy solutions to build a comprehensive, equitable, and integrated early learning system, drawing from the work of the Learning Policy Institute and New America, as well as the authors of Cradle to Kindergarten: A New Plan to Combat Inequality. It will also address concrete actions that policymakers can take in the near term with federal stimulus funds.

Please register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pKpDoK9bSZiiSidYPJdFSw

Speakers:

Laura Bornfreund, Director, Early and Elementary Education, New America

Ajay Chaudry, Professor, New York University and former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Services Policy at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Linda Darling-Hammond, President and CEO, Learning Policy Institute

U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)

Hanna Melnick, Senior Policy Advisor, Learning Policy Institute

Safety Assessment of Autonomous Vehicles with a Naturalistic and Adversarial Driving Environment (June 9, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84039 84039-21619637@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, June 9, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Safety performance testing is critical to the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The prevailing approach life-like simulations of our driving environment. However, due to its high dimensionality and the rareness of safety-critical events, hundreds of millions of miles would be required to demonstrate an AV's safety performance.

The research in this presentation proposes a naturalistic and adversarial driving environment that can significantly reduce the required number of miles driven while simultaneously maintaining unbiasedness. Drs. Henry Liu and Shuo Feng will demonstrate the effectiveness of this in a highway-driving simulation.

Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Fugitive Planning and Potentials for Study: Lessons from the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy Project (JSAP) (June 17, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84246 84246-21620804@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 17, 2021 12:00pm

Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required: https://tinyurl.com/en9thcc6

Part of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/webinars/

What should an antiracist practice entail within the context of Japanese studies? What conceptual, political, and interpersonal tools might hinder or support such a project? And what pitfalls and possibilities should be avoided or embraced in pursuing better ways of learning and living? Given the racist origins and supremacist legacies of Japanese studies, approaching this field through an antiracist lens can seem fraught, if not doomed. Nevertheless, our Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy Project (JSAP) represents an experiment that attempted to do just this. As part of this project, we taught a mixed undergraduate/graduate course in the Winter semester of 2021, “Antiracism and Japanese Culture,” which entailed teaching and learning a number of lessons about “Japan,” analytical tools, politics, and the various intellectual and institutional constraints that shape our understanding. This webinar features presentations and reflections on the JSAP enterprise by the project’s co-organizers, Sophie Hasuo, Reginald Jackson, and Rachel Willis. In addition to explaining the course’s specific pedagogical underpinnings, goals, and organization, we will also discuss various philosophical and pragmatic aspects of developing such a collaborative project. Influenced by Moten and Harney’s notion of fugitive planning in The Undercommons, we outline lessons learned from working together to imagine how best to study and thrive within and beyond the ivory tower.

Reginald Jackson is an Associate Professor of Pre-modern Japanese Literature at the University of Michigan. His research is at the intersection of literature, art history, and performance studies.

The Clements Bookworm: African American Children in the Antebellum North (June 18, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/84098 84098-21620232@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, June 18, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

In her new book “Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood: African American Children in the Antebellum North,” Dr. Crystal Webster argues that young African Americans were frequently left outside the 19th century's emerging constructions of both race and childhood. They were marginalized in the development of schooling, ignored in debates over child labor, and presumed to lack the inherent innocence ascribed to white children. Drawing evidence from the urban centers of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, Webster's innovative research yields a powerful new history of African American childhood before the Civil War, showing that Black children nevertheless carved out physical and social space for play, for learning, and for their own aspirations.

Dr. Webster joins us in conversation with Clements Library Director Paul Erickson. This episode coincides with the celebration of Juneteenth and a growing national recognition of understudied histories and experiences of African Americans in the past.
