While autonomous vehicles (AVs) offer significant safety benefits for drivers, to gain widespread approval from the public and road agencies, redundant vehicle to infrastructure capabilities are necessary. This is especially true in areas with adverse weather conditions such as snow and ice.

Existing AV technology is able to send safety messages to roadside units (RSUs) and other vehicles (V2V), but communication with concrete and asphalt requires embedded sensors. This research proposes a passive sensing approach that detects local changes in the pavement’s electromagnetic signature so that vehicles can determine their lateral lane position. After a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series returns virtually this October with Trevor Pawl!

On July 2nd, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer formally announced the launch of the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) with Trevor Pawl named as Chief Mobility Officer. Trevor will provide insight into the creation of OFME, its vision, and its use as a tool for all key mobility stakeholders in Michigan. This webinar will include a Q&A session.

About the speaker: Trevor Pawl is the Chief Mobility Officer for the State of Michigan, and leads Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification. In this position, Pawl is responsible for working across state government, academia and private industry to grow Michigan’s mobility ecosystem through strategic policy recommendations and new support services for companies focused on the future of transportation. Prior to this position, Pawl served as the Senior Vice President of Business Innovation at the MEDC, where he led the official state programs for mobility (PlanetM), supply chain assistance (Pure Michigan Business Connect), export assistance (Michigan International Trade program) and entrepreneurial assistance (Michigan Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program). Before joining the MEDC, Pawl brought with him experience in supply chain matchmaking, having led the creation of the economic development program, Connection Point, at the Detroit Regional Chamber, which later became Pure Michigan Business Connect. Trevor has been named Crain’s Detroit Business’s “40 Under 40” and “50 Names to Know in Government”. He’s also been named Development Counsellors International’s “40 Under 40 Rising Stars of Economic Development” and the Great Lakes Women’s Business Council’s “Government Advocate of the Year”. Pawl holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Marketing from Grand Valley State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Increasingly, engineering graduate programs have emphasized the need to train individuals who are capable of working in diverse teams so they are better able to address complex problems in a global society. Yet, discourse related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in engineering is often focused on recruiting and retaining students who are racially minoritized and/or women in the field. Less attention is given to what students learn about DEI during their graduate training. Drawing from findings across multiple research projects, this talk will explore what graduate students learn about the role of DEI in engineering and the implications these lessons have for racially minoritized students’ retention, success, and career pathways.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dr. Rosemary (Rosie) Perez is an Associate Professor in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan. She earned her B.S. in biological sciences and psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, her M.Ed. in higher education and student affairs at The University of Vermont, and her Ph.D. in higher education from University of Michigan. Dr. Perez’s scholarship has three interrelated lines of inquiry and explores: (a) how people make meaning of collegiate experiences; (b) diverse learning environments and intercultural development; and (c) the professional socialization of graduate students and new practitioners. Across projects, Dr. Perez explores the tensions between structure and agency, and how power, privilege, and oppression affect individuals and groups within higher education. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Spencer Foundation, Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and ACPA-College Student Educators International.

The final CCAT Research Review of 2020 will feature Associate Professor, Gabor Orosz, of the University of Michigan.

The focus of this research is the deployment of connected smart infrastructure on highway I-275 in SE Michigan. Researchers will collect and aggregate traffic information that can be used by connected vehicles traveling the corridor to improve their efficiency. The system consists of a set of road side units (RSU) which collect traffic data via vehicle-to-everything (CV2X) communication. Vehicles of different levels of automation may utilize the collected data when selecting their lane and controlling their longitudinal motion in order to maximize their fuel economy and minimize their travel time. The impact of these vehicles on the rest of the traffic flow is also being evaluated.

About the speaker: Gabor Orosz received the MSc degree in Engineering Physics from the Budapest University of Technology, Hungary, in 2002 and the PhD degree in Engineering Mathematics from the University of Bristol, UK, in 2006. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Exeter, UK and at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2010, he joined the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he is currently an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering and in Civil and Environmental Engineering. During 2017-2018 he was a Visiting Professor in Control and Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology. His research interests include nonlinear dynamics and control, time delay systems, and reinforcement learning with applications to connected and automated vehicles, traffic flow, and biological networks. He served as the Program Chair of the 2015 IFAC Workshop on Time Delay Systems and served as the General Chair of the 2019 IAVSD Workshop on Dynamics of Road Vehicles: Connected and Automated Vehicles. Since 2018 he has been serving as an editor for the journal Transportation Research Part C.

As society enters the era of Big Data, and intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems begins to embrace it, researchers will rely more on data to train controllers or validate them from repeated simulations.

This talk will describe autonomous and intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and how the availability of experimental testbeds has enabled discoveries applicable for societal-scale systems - one of which is the Cognitive and Autonomous Testbed Vehicle (CAT Vehicle). It has participated in several high-profile experiments regarding heterogeneous human-driven and semi-autonomous traffic flow. Dr. Sprinkle will detail ongoing efforts that explore how collaboration with researchers in application domain fields can dramatically expand available data sets. This also provides unique opportunities for exploring the security and privacy challenges that accompany societal-scale systems.

About the speaker: Dr. Jonathan Sprinkle is the Litton Industries John M. Leonis Distinguished Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona and the Interim Director of the Transportation Research Institute. In 2020 he was named a Distinguished Scholar of the University of Arizona. From 2017-2019 he served as a Program Director in Cyber-Physical Systems and Smart & Connected Communities at the National Science Foundation in the CISE Directorate. In 2013 he received the NSF CAREER award, and in 2009, he received the UA's Ed and Joan Biggers Faculty Support Grant for work in autonomous systems. His work has an emphasis on industry impact, and he was recognized with the UA "Catapult Award" by Tech Launch Arizona in 2014, and in 2012 his team won the NSF I-Corps Best Team award. His research interests and experience are in model-based approaches to cyber-physical systems, and he teaches courses ranging from software modeling to mobile application development and software engineering.

Truck platooning is the process of using connected vehicle technology to join two or more trucks in a convoy. Platooning is associated with two, major societal benefits: environmental, through lowered fuel consumption, CO2 emission, and traffic efficiency, and safety improvement, through automated driving. Quantification of fuel consumption in platoons depends on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the system, specifically the resistance or drag force of trucks. While optimization of fuel consumption is pivotal in truck platooning, analysis of CFD is computationally expensive, especially when uncertainties are present, due to geometrical variability of trucks and platoons as well as in wind magnitude and direction.

This research proposes an artificial intelligence-based surrogate model which enables near real-time optimization of platoon configurations based on fuel consumption and impacts on pavement conditions. Attendees will learn how a deep neural network (DNN) model can be trained using data from CFD simulations that utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

Safety performance testing is critical to the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The prevailing approach life-like simulations of our driving environment. However, due to its high dimensionality and the rareness of safety-critical events, hundreds of millions of miles would be required to demonstrate an AV's safety performance.

The research in this presentation proposes a naturalistic and adversarial driving environment that can significantly reduce the required number of miles driven while simultaneously maintaining unbiasedness. Drs. Henry Liu and Shuo Feng will demonstrate the effectiveness of this in a highway-driving simulation.

About the speakers:
Dr. Henry Liu is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and the Director for the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT). Professor Liu conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of transportation engineering, automotive engineering, and artificial intelligence. Specifically, his scholarly interests concern traffic flow monitoring, modeling, and control, as well as testing and evaluation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). He has published more than 120 refereed journal papers on these topics and his work has been widely recognized in the public media for promoting smart transportation innovations. He has appeared on media outlets including CNBC, Forbes, Technode, and more. In 2019, Professor Liu was invited to testify on the nation's transportation research agenda in front of the US House Subcommittee on Research and Technology. Professor Liu has nurtured a new generation of scholars, and some of his Ph.D. students and postdocs have joined first-class universities such as Columbia, Purdue, and RPI. Professor Liu is also the managing editor of the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Dr. Shuo Feng is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received his bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University, China, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan from 2017 to 2019. His research interests lie in the testing and evaluation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), cooperative automation, and traffic environment modeling. Dr. Feng has published around 20 articles in refereed journals including Nature Communications, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies. He has served as a member in the SAE ORAD V&V committee and workshop organizer of the IEEE 2021 Intelligent Vehicles Symposium. He received the “Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award” from the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) in 2020.

With a greater focus on emerging technologies, ISTDM 2021 rebrands the two long-standing transportation symposia: International Symposium of Transport Simulation (ISTS), and the International Workshop on Traffic Data Collection and its Standardization (IWTDCS).

Currently, urban mobility is facing several challenges: some are the result of long-term urbanization trends and others are the outcome of more recent changes to population behaviors. Addressing these challenges requires systems thinking and a broadening of collaboration between automakers, mobility services companies, and cities. These constituencies must transform, which will determine their new roles in the new, urban mobility. New value chains will emerge along with novel forms of value that will be realized through innovative business models. This presentation, brought to us by Evangelos Simoudis, Ph.D., will highlight the decisions automakers, mobility service companies, and cities must make, and the transformations they will undergo with regards to technology and business models. Dr. Simoudis will also discuss the risks arising from the use of data and artificial intelligence in new, urban mobility.

Cavnue was founded with the vision of bringing mobility to everyone. In order to do that, we must expand the autonomous driving capabilities of vehicles beyond where they are today. We believe that simplifying road designs and connecting vehicles to the infrastructure will be an important element in bringing autonomous technology to scale and making safer roads for everyone.

Billions have been invested to date, yet all we see are a few autonomous vehicle pilots running in cities across the country. How will fully driverless cars change mobility forever? What makes the technology so hard? How will connected vehicles and smart infrastructure play a part in bringing this technology to the world? This talk will create a conversation around these questions.

Abstract (by Mohsen Taheri)

Complex applications in modern technology urgently call for advanced structural materials that are high-strength and lightweight, and yet tolerant to damage from extreme temperature, particle radiation, or environmental exposure. To swiftly fulfill these emerging demanding material requirements, we must develop a multi-scale understanding of the relationship between processing, microstructure, and properties of metallic materials. Toward these goals, I present two examples of my recent findings on (i) how functional behavior of shape memory alloys made by additive manufacturing correlates with the manufacturing history and (ii) how the macroscopic strength of magnesium alloys is governed by local microstructure (grain boundary parameters). I will conclude my talk by discussing how such understandings can be captured in multi-scale modeling tools to predict the deformation of the material and accelerate the development of next-generation structural materials.
