As the 2020 election approaches, climate change will be top-of-mind for many voters. To capitalize on this opportunity, it’s imperative for climate and clean energy experts across disciplines to band together and center climate policies on people and communities beyond just the coasts — ensuring that our nation’s path forward on climate change will be effective, inclusive, equitable, and enduring.

Join the University of Michigan and Third Way, a public policy think tank based in Washington, DC, for the second annual Fastest Path to Zero Summit. This year, to protect the health of all those involved, the summit will be a virtual series. The summit will bring together leading climate advocates, philanthropists, labor leaders, elected officials, academics, and media from across the Midwest and the nation.

Vehicle to Pavement Sensing for Lateral Lane Position Research Review (September 29, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76507 76507-19719168@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 1:00pm

While autonomous vehicles (AVs) offer significant safety benefits for drivers, to gain widespread approval from the public and road agencies, redundant vehicle to infrastructure capabilities are necessary. This is especially true in areas with adverse weather conditions such as snow and ice.

Existing AV technology is able to send safety messages to roadside units (RSUs) and other vehicles (V2V), but communication with concrete and asphalt requires embedded sensors. This research proposes a passive sensing approach that detects local changes in the pavement’s electromagnetic signature so that vehicles can determine their lateral lane position. This free webinar will include a Q&A session. We hope that you can join us!

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

ABSTRACT: What sparks environmental policy leadership? Traditional explanations emphasize the importance of domestic interest groups and institutions but often overlook transnational actors that advocate for the adoption and spread of environmental policies. In this paper, I provide a new dataset on the adoption of environmental policies and develop a new definition of environmental policy leadership. I then show how transnational environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) use their advocacy to stimulate countries' policy innovation and amplify their influence. I find that countries adopt new environmental policies at a 46% higher rate when more transnational ENGOs are present and countries that share more transnational ENGOs are 24% more likely to form leader-follower policymaking relationships. Transnational ENGOs appear to play an important role in catalyzing increases in national environmental policy leadership.

The primary function of this workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Hands-on Workshop: Creating a Hybrid Simulation System Using the Simple Run Time Infrastructure Software (October 9, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76684 76684-19735053@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 9, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering

The goal of this hands-on workshop is to introduce the Simple Run-Time Infrastructure software toolkit (SRTI) to the participants, and provide a template project consisting of multiple simulators, each with a specialized purpose, relating to a natural-disaster scenario. It will take place after the feature talks.

The SRTI is a free, open-source solution developed at the University of Michigan, and enables researchers to connect computer programs and simulators written in different languages, to share data during execution, and to design hybrid systems using disparate simulator modules, with a primary goal of being user friendly. This hands-on workshop will explain what the SRTI is, and provide an example on how to use it.

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required to run the SRTI. Please install it prior to the workshop. Refer to icor.engin.umich.edu for more information on supported operating systems and languages. Participants will need to use their own computer systems at home to take part. Basic coding skills in any programming language are required.

Open to the general public. Please register if you wish to participate.

The Science, Technology, Medicine and Society (STeMS) Speaker Series features scholars doing research across the range of STS subject matter. This term:

Are we humans cooperative or warlike, rational or delusional, fixed or flexible? These questions have philosophical bite and political stakes. Indeed, they always have. But recent work in a range of disciplines asks us to go deeper. What if “we humans” are more fiction than fact? If we can’t assume the stability of the human across time and place, what happens to debates about human nature? Humanistic approaches, including actor-network theory, posthuman criticism, and multispecies ethnographies, challenge the idea of an autonomous human nature, while scientific studies of organ development, neuroendocrinology, and the microbiome are revealing how much nature there is inside of us. We explore these questions through a braided history of the human and environmental sciences.

It is impossible to ignore the evidence of the past decade - wildfires have made air on the west coast incredibly hazardous and children have been poisoned by drinking water at crucial ages of development. The environment we have created for ourselves is a serious threat to our health.

Eva Feldman, MD, PhD, Director of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies, will moderate the 30-minute mini symposium that discusses both global and local impacts that the environment has on our health. Along with Dr. Feldman, presentations will be made by Jonathan Overpeck, PhD, Dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability, who will address climate change and environmental justice; Stuart Batterman, PhD, a professor from the U-M School of Public Health, who will discuss how contaminants in the air affect your health; and Stephen Goutman, MD, MS, director of the Pranger ALS Clinic, who will talk about the association between environmental pollution and ALS.

ABSTRACT
This paper examines how colonial and post-colonial expropriation of Maasai lands for conservation represent a form of primitive accumulation. Unlike current theorizations of primitive accumulation that prioritize explicit expropriation for capitalist production, my account
centers on the role of temporality in the Maasai political struggle to illustrate how the material and symbolic dimensions of primitive accumulation interlock. I show how states and conservationist groups justify and naturalize colonial and capitalist organizations of space by
drawing temporal distinctions between nature and civilization and between non-capitalist and capitalist systems. This study locates temporality as a key dimension of analysis and political struggle. It analyzes how efforts to mitigate the harms of capitalism often reproduce its temporality to the detriment of colonized peoples, and it provokes engagement with Indigenous conceptions of time that generate critical approaches to human and environmental relations.

The Political Theory Workshop provides a venue for political theory-oriented scholarship broadly construed. Participants include theoretically-inclined members of social science and humanities departments across the University of Michigan, as well as institutions throughout southwest Michigan.

Webinar: Decision Support for Siting of Shellfish Aquaculture within a National Estuarine Research Reserve (October 20, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77390 77390-19846078@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 20, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

North Carolina’s shellfish aquaculture industry has been small but stable for over 30 years. The southern portion of the North Carolina coast has consistently provided more than 50 percent of the wild harvest in the state, which has been driving interest in creating new oyster farms throughout the region. Simultaneously, increased interest in shellfish aquaculture has placed pressure on resource managers making siting decisions. New farms provide an opportunity to assess conditions after farm installation, making North Carolina estuaries an ideal place to explore the ecosystem services of shellfish farming. This project aimed to link small-scale changes around oyster farms with larger-scale ecosystem-level alterations, and provide local assessment of ecosystem services to be considered by decision-makers.

In this webinar, project team members will describe how two years of intensive sampling in and adjacent to oyster farms and ongoing collaboration with oyster farms and the policy community has resulted in the production of visualization tools and models that will allow resource managers, shellfish growers, and other end users to make better decisions when determining the locations and scales of shellfish farming operations. The team found that environmental impacts of these farms were minimal, but that policy decisions were more complex. This finding led to an additional project examining the extent of shellfish aquaculture within the nationwide Reserve system.

Astrophysics has always been at the forefront of data analysis. It has led to advancements in image processing and numerical simulations. The coming decade is bringing qualitatively new and larger datasets than ever before. The next generation of observational facilities will produce an explosion in the quantity and quality of data for the most distant sources, such as the first galaxies and first quasars. Quasars are the most energetic objects in the universe, reaching luminosity up to 10^14 that of the Sun. Their emission is powered by giant black holes that convert matter into energy according to the famous Einstein’s equation E = mc^2. The largest progress will occur in quasar spectroscopy. Detailed measurements of spectrum of quasar light, as it is being emitted near the central black hole and partially absorbed by clouds of gas on the way to the observer on Earth, allows for a particularly powerful probe of quasar environment. Because spectra of different chemical elements are unique, spectroscopy allows to study not only the overall properties of matter such as density and temperature, but also the detailed chemical composition of the intervening matter. However, the interpretation of these spectra is made very challenging by the many sources contributing to the absorption of light. In order to take a full advantage of this new window into the nature of supermassive black holes we need detailed theoretical understanding of the origin of quasar spectral features. In a MIDAS PODS project we are applying machine learning to model and extract such features. We are training the models using data from the state-of-the-art numerical simulations of the early universe. This approach is fundamentally different from traditional astronomical data analysis. We have only started learning what information can be extracted and still looking for a new framework to interpret these data.

What would you do with an idea and $10,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join the BLI to learn more about Capstone Experience and meet like-minded students with ideas and skills to collaborate with. Teams, individuals, or those just interested in learning more are all welcome — you do not have to be a current BLI member to participate in this info session.

Whether your project is still an idea or an existing project that has approached a hurdle or is considering growth, the BLI Capstone Experience will provide teams with the funding — a minimum of $10,000 — and mentorship necessary to make your vision a reality.

Near Term to Net Zero: A New Approach to Setting Carbon Prices (December 2, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78892 78892-20139089@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Citizens Climate Lobby

Join Citizens' Climate Lobby for a presentation on a new method for determining the carbon price needed to achieve net zero CO2 emissions.

Economists widely agree that putting a price on fossil fuels is the most effective tool for reducing carbon emissions. But what level of carbon price is needed to reduce carbon emissions fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate change?

Prof. Alexander R. Barron will present a new method he and colleagues have developed to calculate the necessary carbon price. Their work was recently published in the paper "A near-term to net zero alternative to the social cost of carbon for setting carbon prices," N. Kaufman, A. Barron, W. Krawczyk, P. Marsters and H. McJeon, Nature Climate Change. As the authors have written,

"This approach enables policymakers to use both climate science and economics to chart an effective, efficient pathway to net-zero emissions."

Dr. Barron is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy at Smith College. Before joining Smith, he worked in Congress to design comprehensive climate legislation (including the American Clean Energy and Security Act), and covered international climate negotiations. He also worked in the Office of Policy at the EPA, where he advised senior EPA leadership and worked on standards to reduce carbon pollution (e.g., the Clean Power Plan), cross-state air pollution, and mercury and other toxics. He also helped guide EPA’s work on environmental economics and climate adaptation.

The presentation will be followed by time for discussion.

Please register using the Eventbrite Registration link. Zoom connection instructions will be sent via email prior to the event.

Sponsored by the Ann Arbor and University of Michigan chapters of Citizens' Climate Lobby.

You're invited to join our senior Social Theory & Practice (STP) majors as they present their thesis research on topics ranging from sustainable food in MDining to dialectical steps toward non-capitalism, Tuesday December 8 from 4:10 - 5:30pm at https://umich.zoom.us/j/97960464467.

The Residential College STP major supports students in developing the analytical and practical skills necessary for active engagement in the world and for building careers that promote equality and responsible citizenship. Students learn theories, methods, and strategies that enable them to understand and critique social structures and processes, and choose a focus of study that can encompass sociology, political science, history, anthropology, economics, education, environmental justice, sustainable agriculture, geography, and psychology to approach current issues in U.S. society and the global environment. Like our students, no two STP major plans are alike.

Learning objectives:

1. Discuss the conceptual distinction and clinical utility of self-reported race/ethnicity and genetic ancestry in childhood asthma.
2. Discuss the role of genetic ancestry and socio-environmental exposures in childhood asthma.
3. Discuss ancestry-specific polygenic risk scores, precision medicine and childhood asthma disparities.

Short bio: Dr. Mersha is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Asthma Research and leads the Population Genetics, Ancestry, and Bioinformatics (pGAB) Laboratory (https://research.cchmc.org/mershalab/Home.php).
Dr. Mersha’s research combines quantitative, ancestry and statistical genomics to unravel genetic and non-genetic contributions to complex diseases and racial disparities in human populations, particularly asthma and asthma-related allergic disorders. Much of his research is at the interface of genetic ancestry, statistics, bioinformatics, and functional genomics, and he is interested in cross-line disciplines to unravel the interplay between genome and envirome underlying asthma risk. His long-term research goal is to understand and dissect how biologic predisposition and environmental exposures interact to shape racial disparities in complex disorders.

UPDATE: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our meetings will take place virtually until further notice, using the Zoom platform. Contact annarbor@citizensclimatelobby.org for connection information.

Worried about climate change? Wondering how you can make a real difference? Come to the monthly meeting of the Ann Arbor chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL). CCL is a national, grassroots organization working to enact federal legislation to put a price on CO2. It is the most focused and influential organization working on national climate policy. We are working to build support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (energyinnovationact.org). This comprehensive, bipartisan legislation is projected to reduce our carbon emissions by at least 40% in 12 years. Our meetings consist of dialing in to a national conference call (featuring different guest speakers each month), followed by local discussion of actions. Newcomers are welcome to come at 12:30 for a brief overview.

Webinar: Putting 2020 in the Rear View: Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Collaborative Research (December 16, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79680 79680-20448276@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 16, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

What a year 2020 has been! COVID-19 has reshaped how we understand and practice collaborative research, not to mention nearly every other aspect of how we live and work. By year’s end, all of us are now on a similar journey to take stock of what we have learned through these challenges.

This webinar brings together the perspectives of five funders working across North America that sponsor collaborative research on environmental topics. Earlier this fall, each of them polled their grantees about how COVID-19 has affected their active projects and asked them to make sense of the benefits and constraints of doing collaborative research virtually. In this webinar, panelists representing the organizations involved in the study will share and discuss preliminary findings and their implications for future programs. Participating funders will include: California Strategic Growth Council, NERRS Science Collaborative, NOAA’s Regional Integrated Sciences & Assessment, Lenfest Ocean Program at the Pew Charitable Trust, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

We will discuss Chapter 3: "Clare's Commonable Plants." Kindly RSVP to Sarah Van Cleve (srvc@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.

Theresa Kelley's Clandestine Marriage delves into Romantic representations of botanizing culture, exploring in particular the role botany played in larger Romantic-era debates about life and the ability to know, categorize, and depict its various forms. The chapter we will read focuses on the unsettling perspective brought by John Clare's plant poetry; often considered a poet of place and of enclosure, Clare's refusal to use Linnaean plant names is characterized by Kelley as a small act of poetic and quasi-scientific rebellion. Kelley thus links what she calls "Clare's Commonable Plants" and his resistance toward what he saw as the authoritarian Linnaean system to a retroactive resistance to the similarly authoritarian system of enclosure and the damage it wrought on rural communities.

Stamps Gallery Director Srimoyee Mitra will moderate Perspectives on Water: Land Rights, Accessibility & Histories on January 21, 2021 at noon EST. This free, virtual panel discussion is part of the Alternate Assembly: Environmental Impact in the Era of Pandemic, organized by EXPO CHICAGO.

Panelists include Oscar Tuazon, Carolina Caycedo, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta.

This panel invites artists who have initiated further investigations into the histories of water in terms of land rights and clean water accessibility in lakes, rivers, and oceans, to explore the cultural ways in which water bridges communities both locally and globally. Highlighting the often-unseen political history that water and its major infrastructures has, this discussion will question how different sociopolitical backgrounds affect one’s relationship to sustainability. The conversation, moderated by past Curatorial Forum participant Srimoyee Mitra, will address the long lineage art has played within narratives surrounding environmental activism.

Collaborative science involves working closely with partners at every stage - from conceptualizing a new project, to conducting the research, to refining tools to best meet a management need. In May 2020, hoping to start a dialogue around virtual engagement for collaborative science, we held a webinar to reflect on the ways in which collaborative science practices have been impacted by COVID-19.

Now, as we look ahead to 2021, we’re pausing a moment to reflect on what we learned over the course of 2020 and how our practices have changed in response to the pandemic. This webinar will feature preliminary findings from a 2020 survey of collaborative research grantees, first-hand commentary on how collaborative practices have evolved, and speculation about what these lessons mean for the future of collaborative work. The discussion will build on panelists’ comments to further tease out the implications of these new practices for future collaborative science work, and how these lessons can be applied to coastal science within and beyond the NERRS.

Abstract: Massively parallel single-cell and single-nucleus RNA sequencing (sc/snRNA-seq) has opened the way to systematic tissue atlases in health and disease, but as the scale of data generation is growing, so is the need for computational pipelines for scaled analysis. We developed Cumulus, the first comprehensive cloud-based framework, to address the big data challenge arising from sc/snRNA-seq analysis. Cumulus combines the power of cloud computing with improvements in algorithm and implementation to achieve high scalability, low cost, user-friendliness and integrated support for a comprehensive set of features. We benchmark Cumulus on the Human Cell Atlas Census of Immune Cells dataset of bone marrow cells and show that it substantially improves efficiency over conventional frameworks, while maintaining or improving the quality of results, enabling large-scale studies.

In recent years, biologists have found that sc/snRNA-seq alone is not enough to reveal the full picture of how cells function and coordinate with each other in a complex tissue. They begin to couple sc/snRNA-seq with other common data modalities, such as single-cell ATAC-seq (scATAC-seq), single-cell Immune Repertoire sequencing (scIR-seq), spatial transcriptomics and mass cytometry. This data coupling is called single-cell multimodal omics. As it is becoming a new common practice, new analysis needs emerge along with two major computational challenges: big data challenge and integration challenge. The big data challenge requires us to develop scalable computational infrastructure and algorithms to deal with the ever-growing large datasets produced from the community. The integration challenge requires us to design new algorithms to enable holistic integration of heterogeneous data from different modalities. In the last part of my talk, I will discuss my team’s efforts and plans to develop Cumulus as an integrated data analysis framework for scaled single-cell multimodal omics.

Single-cell multimodal omics has the potential to provide a more comprehensive characterization of complex multicellular systems than the sum of its parts. As the datasets produced from the community keep growing substantially, the enhanced Cumulus will continue playing an important role in the effort to build atlases of complex tissues and organs at higher cellular resolution, and in leveraging them to understand the human body in health and disease.

Short bio: Dr. Bo Li is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, the director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Center for Immunology Inflammatory Diseases, Massachusetts General Hospital, and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His research focuses on large-scale single-cell and single-nucleus genomics data analysis. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from UW-Madison and completed two postdoctoral trainings with Dr. Lior Pachter at UC Berkeley and Dr. Aviv Regev at Broad Institute. He is best known for developing RSEM, an impactful RNA-seq transcript quantification software. RSEM is cited 9,384 times (Google Scholar) and adopted by several big consortia such as TCGA, ENCODE, GTEx and TOPMed.

This conversation will be moderated by Associate Professor from the Department of Theatre & Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance Dr. Antonio C. Cuyler (Kyler) (He). He will be joined by the following panelist (BSU Vice Speaker Cydney Gardner-Brown, Turn Turn Out President Josiah Walker, and Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer Office of the Provost Dr. Robert Sellers).

Ms. Brown is a 2020-2021 Hauser Leader at the Center for Public Leadership and a 2020-2021 American Democracy Fellow at Harvard’s Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. Throughout the 2020 U.S. election, Ms. Brown led the We Got the Power bus tour across the U.S. South to register people to vote and galvanize Black voter participation. In a recent interview, Ms. Brown said “We wanted people, we wanted Black voters in particular, to feel a sense of their power and their agency, and in spite of all odds, what we could do in pushing this country forward.

Ms. Brown is also an award-winning thought leader, social strategist, philanthropic consultant, jazz singer, and catalyst for change. As co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, Ms. Brown is dedicated to increasing the political power of Black people. She has more than twenty years of experience working in the non-profit and philanthropy sectors on issues related to political empowerment, social justice, economic development, leadership development, wealth creation and civil rights. A regular contributor to The New York Times and a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Ms. Brown is a recipient of the 2010 White House Champions of Change Award, 2006 Spirit of Democracy Award, and the Louis Burnham Award for Human Rights.

She will share thoughts on her lecture, “The Death of Democracy: Voter Suppression in the 21st Century,” and she will discuss how storytelling and strategic messaging can build political power. The role of women, young voters, and people of color in American politics will be a key area of discussion as it relates to civic engagement protests and student activism.

Abstract:
Understanding intra-tumour heterogeneity (ITH), in particular identifying the presence of subclonal populations of cancer cells that may respond differently to treatments, is key to support precision medicine approaches. Capturing ITH from genomic measures raises however a number of computational challenges. In this talk I will present CloneSig, a method to infer ITH from "bulk" genomic data, in particular whole-exome sequencing data, and capture changes in mutational processes active in different subclones. I will then discuss the promises of single-cell genomics and some challenges it raises, in particular to transform raw count data into useful representations, integrate heterogeneous modalities, and learn gene regulation.

Short bio: Jean-Philippe Vert has been a research scientist at Google Brain in Paris and adjunct researcher at PSL University Mines ParisTech since 2018. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique and holds a PhD in mathematics from Paris University. He was research professor and the founding director of the Centre for Computational Biology at Mines ParisTech from 2006 to 2018, team leader at the Curie Institute on computational biology of cancer (2008-2018), visiting scholar at UC Berkeley (2015-2016), and professor at the department of mathematics of Ecole normale supérieure in Paris (2016-2018).
His research interest concerns the development of statistical and machine learning methods, particularly to model complex, high-dimensional and structured data, with an application focus on computational biology, genomics and precision medicine. His recent contributions include new methods to embed structured data such as strings, graphs or permutations to vector spaces, regularization techniques to learn from limited amounts of data, and computationally efficient techniques for pattern detection and feature selection.
He is also working on several medical applications in cancer research, including quantifying and modeling cancer heterogeneity, predicting response to therapy, and modeling the genome and epigenome of cancer cells at the single-cell level.

ere.

The University of Virginia—designed by Thomas Jefferson and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—was built and maintained by 4,000 or more enslaved men, women, and children. UVA’s powerful new Memorial to Enslaved Laborers honors the lives, labors, and resistance of the enslaved people who lived and worked at UVA at some point between 1817 and 1865.

This interview with members of the memorial’s design team will explore the history, form, and process behind the creation of the memorial. Panelists: Mabel Wilson, Meejin Yoon, Eric Höweler, and Eto Otitigbe, with U-M's Kristin Hass as interviewer.

~   Eric Höweler, AIA, LEED AP,  is an associate professor in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he teaches lecture courses and design studios with a focus on building technologies/integration. He is a co-founding principal of  Höweler + Yoon Architecture LLP, a research-driven, multidisciplinary design studio working between architecture, art, and media. HYA has a reputation for work that is technologically and formally innovative, and deeply informed by human experience, and a sensitivity to tectonics.

Eto Otitigbe is a polymedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice investigates the intersections of race, power, and technology. With history as the foundation for exploration, Otitigbe sets alternative narratives into motion; creating spaces for people to experience a unique mixture of concepts. Otitigbe lives and works in Brooklyn, NY where is an Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture in the Art Department of Brooklyn College.

Mabel O. Wilson is the Nancy and George Rupp Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, a professor in African American and African diasporic studies, director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies, and co-director of the Global Africa Lab at Columbia University. She is trained in architecture and American studies, two fields that inform her work. Through her transdisciplinary practice Studio &, Wilson makes visible and legible the ways that anti-black racism shapes the built environment along with the ways that blackness creates spaces of imagination, refusal, and desire.

J. Meejin Yoon, AIA FAAR, is an architect, designer, and educator, whose projects and research investigate the intersections between architecture, technology, and the public realm. Prior to joining the faculty at AAP, Yoon was at MIT for 17 years and served as the head of the Department of Architecture from 2014–18. Yoon is cofounding principal of Höweler and Yoon Architecture.

Kristin Hass is associate professor of American culture and faculty coordinator for the Humanities Collaboratory at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Carried to the Wall: American Memory and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1998) and Sacrificing Soldiers on the National Mall (2013). Her fields of study include visual culture, material culture, museum studies, memory, and 20th-century cultural history.

This is the first in a series of annual Art and Activism lectures as part of High Stakes Art, a project designed to enhance exhibitions and programming at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. High Stakes Art and this lecture are made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the U-M Arts Initiative.

The Future of Art Series is hosted by the U-M Arts Initiative as part of a two-year startup phase.

Abstract: The increasing omics data and advanced AI technology present a great opportunity for novel biomarker-driven cancer therapies. My talk will cover two parts. First, I will introduce DrBioRight, a natural language-oriented and AI-driven analytic platform for omic data analysis. This platform allows users to perform analysis directly through human languages and it improves the performance through adaptive learning. Armed with NLP and AI technologies, this analytic will maximize the utility of omics data and lead to a new paradigm for biomedical research. Second, I will discuss our recent work on enhancer RNAs. We show that the eRNAs provide explanatory power for cancer phenotypes beyond that provided by mRNA expression through resolving intratumoral heterogeneity with enhancer cell-type specificity. Our study provides a high-resolution map of eRNA loci through which enhancer activities can be quantified by RNA-seq, enabling a broad range of biomedical investigations.

Bio: Dr. Liang is a Barnhart Family Distinguished Professor in Targeted Therapies and the Deputy Chair of Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is also a professor in the Department of Systems Biology. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Peking University (China) in 2001 and Ph.D. in quantitative and computational biology from Princeton University (NJ, USA) in 2006. Dr. Liang then finished his postdoctoral training in evolutionary and computational genomics at the University of Chicago. He joined MD Anderson Cancer Center as Assistant Professor and started his own group in 2009.
At MD Anderson, Dr. Liang’s group focuses on bioinformatics tool development, integrated cancer genomic analysis, regulatory RNA regulation/modification, and cancer systems biology. His systematic studies on enhancer regulation, RNA editing, functional proteomics, sex effects, and driver mutations in cancer have generated profound impacts on the biomedical research community and attracted wide attention such as The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. The bioinformatics tools his group developed (such as TCPA, TANRIC, FASMIC, DrBioRight) collectively have >110,000 active users worldwide. Since 2010, he has published >140 papers total citation >25,000 times), including 41 corresponding-author papers in top journals such as Cell, Cancer Cell, Nature Genetics, Nature Biotechnology, and Nature Methods.

Abstract: The human genome sequence folds in three dimensions (3D) into a rich variety of locus-specific contact patterns. Despite growing appreciation for the importance of 3D genome folding in evolution and disease, we lack models for relating mutations in genome sequences to changes in genome structure and function. Towards that goal, we discovered that the organization of gene regulatory domains within chromosomes and the specific sequences that sit at boundaries between domains are under strong negative selection in the human population and over primate evolution. Motivated by this signature of functional importance, we developed a deep convolutional neural network, called Akita, that accurately predicts genome folding from DNA sequence alone. Representations learned by Akita underscore the importance of the structural protein CTCF but also reveal a complex grammar beyond CTCF binding sites that underlies genome folding. Akita enabled rapid in silico predictions for effects of sequence mutagenesis on the 3D genome, including differences in genome folding across species and in disease cohorts, which we are validating with CRISPR-edited genomes. This prediction-first strategy exemplifies my vision for a more proactive, rather than reactive, role for data science in biomedical research.

In this presentation, we will introduce Planet Blue Student Leaders and the role of the off-campus team project in cultivating sustainable behaviors on campus. Our project is about transforming the way we think about clothing and its role in our society. We hope that by encouraging a commitment to shopping second-hand, we can curb some of the harmful effects the fast fashion industry has on the environment as well as human rights. Our aim, while it is ultimately in the hands of our participants, is to facilitate a long-term behavior change which will change the norms and culture around clothing. We want a world in which clothing signifies self-expression, but not at the cost of a pristine environment and human dignity.

Please join us for MUSE 2021's kick-off keynote speaker, Jeremy Orr, Esq.

Jeremy Orr is a Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council who focuses on drinking water and source water protection issues, working to ensure that everyone has access to safe, sufficient, and affordable drinking water. With a background in grassroots community organizing and public interest law, Orr most recently served as the national state program director for the Peoples Climate Movement and as an environmental justice coordinator for the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic. Orr holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and law degree from Michigan State University.

Keynote Presentation Abstract: At their core, sustainability, environmental protection, and conservation should all be rooted in policies that seek to advance environmental and public health. Yet, there are times when those policies not only fall short of those goals, but also result in disproportionate impacts on the most vulnerable populations —namely, Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. Since policies are man-made, it is critical that we as professionals in the field constantly take stock of our racial biases and how those biases manifest in our work. In my keynote, I will explore the presence of environmental injustice, racism, and implicit bias in our work and how we can prevent, remedy, and reconcile those harms moving forward.

For our keynote public event at this year's MUSE Conference, we are lucky to have Dr. Carolyn Finney in conversation with Samantha Adams. Finney will present work, followed by a discussion with Adams and audience Q&A. All are welcome to join in.

Dr. Carolyn Finney is a storyteller, author and a cultural geographer. She is deeply interested in issues related to identity, difference, creativity, and resilience. Carolyn is grounded in both artistic and intellectual ways of knowing - she pursued an acting career for eleven years, but five years of backpacking trips through Africa and Asia, and living in Nepal changed the course of her life. Motivated by these experiences, Carolyn returned to school after a 15-year absence to complete a B.A., M.A. (gender and environmental issues in Kenya and Nepal) and a Ph.D. (where she was a Fulbright and a Canon National Science Scholar Fellow). Along with public speaking, writing, media engagements, consulting & teaching, she served on the U.S. National Parks Advisory Board for eight years. Her first book, Black Faces, White Spaces: Reimagining the Relationship of African Americans to the Great Outdoors was released in 2014. Recent publications include Self-Evident: Reflections on the Invisibility of Black Bodies in Environmental Histories (BESIDE Magazine, Montreal Spring 2020), and The Perils of Being Black in Public: We are all Christian Cooper and George Floyd (The Guardian, June 3rd 2020). She is currently working on a performance piece about John Muir (The N Word: Nature Revisited) while doing a two-year residency in the Franklin Environmental Center at Middlebury College as the Environmental Studies Professor of Practice.

Samantha Adams is a Milwaukee native, freshwater enthusiast, and Doctoral Candidate in the English and Women & Gender Studies program at the University of Michigan. A budding scholar in African American Literature, Black feminisms, and Ecocriticism, she is particularly curious about relationships between Black people and bodies of water, and how those relationships are reflected in literature

We are grateful to the Department of English Language & Literature for their financial support of this event.

Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

As climate change and sea level rise alter salt marsh habitats, a less understood impact - with implications for human health - is how changes in marsh habitat affect the production and location of nuisance mosquito populations. Understanding how coastal ecosystems are being impacted by climate change, and how nuisance mosquito populations are changing, is critical to ensuring coastal managers make the most informed decisions going forward.

In this webinar, project team members will describe how data-collection, mapping, and modeling efforts have resulted in increased clarity about marsh habitat change to inform mosquito control and coastal restoration efforts in New Jersey. Future modeling and marsh‐upland edge mapping suggest that the marsh‐upland is and will be a hotspot for change, and field sampling confirmed that these “new” habitats can serve as breeding areas for mosquitoes. The team also developed environmental DNA (eDNA) assays for the most common salt marsh mosquitoes in the Middle Atlantic United States. Working closely with mosquito control agency personnel, the team has made major advancements in mosquito surveillance through the deployment of drone-based sampling of breeding pools paired with the eDNA analyses. The team also developed outreach materials to inform the public about health risks posed by mosquitoes, including how climate change might exacerbate those risks, and a module for middle/high school educators.

Please join us for MUSE 2021's mid-week keynote speaker, Dr. Mika Kennedy.

Mika Kennedy is a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Kalamazoo College. Her current academic book project examines narratives of Japanese American incarceration, and the ways these narratives are in conversation with questions about the environment, the seductions of the “frontier,” and Native sovereignty. She is also the co-curator of 'Exiled to Motown', a grassroots exhibit of Japanese American community in Detroit, which has an upcoming exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum in July 2021.

Keynote Presentation Abstract: (Title: Turn to Earth: Looking for a Man Named Komako in Bad Day at Black Rock)
We live in a universe of things: How do we continue to find new value in them, even after they lose their blockbuster luster, or their original provocations are no longer new? If the act of interpretation is an act of finding use in something, this talk is about finding re-use by turning to earth--by taking the landscape of a text as vital and actively meaning-making. In its examination of Bad Day at Black Rock, it asks what a 1955 Hollywood Western actually has to say about the Japanese American body it buried, sight unseen; what the black rocks of Black Rock have borne witness to; and what that it all means for the eco-imperial state.

Abstract: COVID Moonshot is an international consortium aiming to discover patent-free oral antiviral against SARS-CoV-2, targeting the main protease. Operating under an open science ethos, we make all data and structures publicly available, and crowdsource molecule designs from the community. In less than a year, we went from fragment hits to nanomolar leads in biochemical and antiviral assays. In my talk, I will discuss Moonshot’s journey towards orally bioavailable, non-covalent, and non-peptidomimetic Mpro inhibitors. I will discuss how machine learning technologies have accelerated our design-make-test cycle, and the learnings we gleaned from this large-scale prospective use of algorithms.

Bio: Dr. Alpha Lee is a Group Leader in the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. His research focuses on developing machine learning technologies that close the design-make-test cycle for small molecule drug discovery and materials discovery. He is interested in how physical and chemical insights can be integrated into the design of interpretable algorithms. Before joining Cambridge, Dr. Lee was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard and obtained his PhD from the University of Oxford.

The way we live, work, and play is very different today than it was just a few decades ago, thanks in large part to a network of connectivity that now encompasses most people on the planet. In a similar way, today we are at the beginning of a new technological revolution: the Internet is entering the physical space – the traditional domain of architecture and design – becoming an “Internet of Things” or IoT. As such, it is opening the door to a variety of applications that – in a similar way to what happened with the first wave of the Internet – can encompass many domains: from energy to mobility, from production to citizen participation. The contribution from Prof. Carlo Ratti will address these issues from a critical point of view through projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the design office Carlo Ratti Associati.

An architect and engineer by training, Professor Carlo Ratti teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he directs the Senseable City Lab, and is a founding partner of the international design and innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, and later earned his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK. A leading voice in the debate on new technologies’ impact on urban life and design, Carlo has co-authored over 500 publications, including “The City of Tomorrow” (Yale University Press, with Matthew Claudel), and holds several technical patents.

Panelists:

Kenichi Soga, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Berkeley

Geoffrey Thün, Professor of Architecture and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Creative Practice, A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
