UROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers from across all U-M's 19 Schools and Colleges who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

Since the pandemic emerged in early 2020, the global economy and the way we do business has fundamentally changed. We have seen huge disruptions to supply chains around the world, vast disparities in health outcomes among different populations, work and education models shifted to remote and hybrid environments, and the highest levels of inflation in recent times. As we enter the third year of the pandemic, join University of Michigan experts Gabe Ehrlich, Samantha Keppler, Sarah Miller, and Nirupama Rao to hear about what we can expect from business and the economy in 2022. They will dive into topics related to education, healthcare, supply chain, and employment and inflation issues.

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

Visit www.tedxuofm.com to get tickets to our Conference!

Spirals, dendrites, fractals. Take a deep dive through art into the micro and macro worlds of nature along with UMMA Curator for University Learning and Programs David Choberka and U-M faculty and artist Cathy Barry (Stamps School of Art and Design; Program in the Environment). Along the way we’ll make some art together, and we’ll consider just how freaked out 17th-century French philosopher Blaise Pascal was about the infinite bigness and smallness of the universe.

Participants will be asked to do a teensie-weensie little assignment before the session. Don’t worry. It’ll be fun!

Subject Matters is offered in collaboration with the U-M faculty who worked with UMMA to curate installations in Curriculum / Collection for use by their university classes. Together, we are bringing the UMMA classroom experience to you. You’ll learn about the subject matter, about art, and you’ll have loads of fun doing it. We hope to see you there.

This is an in-person event, held at UMMA. Free. Registration Required. Register Here.

We’d love to see you at all the Subject Matters sessions! Upcoming events are: March 8 - 6:00pm Subject Matter: Seeing Empires How Pictures of Animals Helped Build Empires  Guest faculty: Benedicte Boisseron (Department of Afroamerican and African Studies)

Recent years have seen astounding growth in the deployment of AI systems in critical domains such as autonomous vehicles, criminal justice, healthcare, hiring, housing, human resource management, law enforcement, and public safety, where decisions taken by AI agents directly impact human lives. Consequently, there is an increasing concern if these decisions can be trusted to be correct, reliable, fair, and safe, especially under adversarial attacks. How then can we deliver on the promise of the benefits of AI but address these scenarios that have life-critical consequences for people and society? In short, how can we achieve trustworthy AI?

Under the umbrella of trustworthy computing, there is a long-established framework employing formal methods and verification techniques for ensuring trust properties like reliability, security, and privacy of traditional software and hardware systems. Just as for trustworthy computing, formal verification could be an effective approach for building trust in AI-based systems. However, the set of properties needs to be extended beyond reliability, security, and privacy to include fairness, robustness, probabilistic accuracy under uncertainty, and other properties yet to be identified and defined. Further, there is a need for new property specifications and verification techniques to handle new kinds of artifacts, e.g., data distributions, probabilistic programs, and machine learning-based models that may learn and adapt automatically over time. This talk will pose a new research agenda, from a formal methods perspective, for us to increase trust in AI systems.

Physiological Sensing to Indicate Driver Takeover Abilities — CCAT Research Review (March 9, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/92203 92203-21688056@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 9, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

The emerging level 3 autonomous vehicle (L3AV) can perform all aspects of the driving task and allow for complete disengagement of drivers (e.g., sit back and relax) under certain driving scenarios including immediate response (e.g., emergency braking). However, this still requires the driver to be prepared for takeover within a few seconds of warning. Being able to measure and predict the takeover performance (TOP) ahead of time and issue adequate warnings is critical to ensure driver comfort, trust, and safety in the system and acceptance of the technology.

A necessary undertaking in this process is to develop a robust approach to understand the drivers’ capabilities to take over the vehicle safely and promptly in L3 AV under different driving and disengagement scenarios. In this project, we propose an integrated treatment of the drivers’ TOP measured through multimodal physiological features and driving environment data in L3 AVs. We will present the results of data collected from 20 drivers. The drivers were presented with different secondary tasks and driving scenarios in a simulator and their physiological responses were collected using different sensing devices such as electroencephalogram (EEG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and heart rate (HR). The presentation will highlight the relationship between the driver's physiological state such as level of engagement with the secondary task and their TOP.

Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students, alumni, and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students:
$550 for U-M alumni or public
$425 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$325 for U-M Ross School of Business or U-M College of Engineering staff
$225 for Tauber Institute students
$145 for previous students to retake the exam

Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 13 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)
Sunday, March 27 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)
Sunday, April 10 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for May 1, 2022 (11:00 am) virtually. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:

NOTE: The non-refundable fees

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Dima Khalidi, founder and director of Palestine Legal, will deliver the 31st Annual Davis, Markert, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom.

Abstract

Amid a nationwide push to curtail the teaching of institutional racism and the dark sides of US history, we can learn important lessons from another subject on which campus communities have long experienced attacks on free speech and academic freedom: Palestine. In what can only be characterized as a “Palestine Exception to free speech,” academics, students, and others who speak out for Palestinian rights are routinely falsely accused, investigated, surveilled, harassed, and sometimes suffer severe consequences to their reputations and careers. Right-wing efforts to dictate what academics can and can’t say, teach, or write are proliferating. Is this a “new McCarthyism”? What is at stake? What can we learn from Palestinians and their allies whose histories, narratives, and experiences are constantly denied, erased, and criminalized, even in academia? How can we ensure that universities can be bastions of academic freedom, and not enforcers of corporate, lobbyist, and governmental litmus tests?

Positive Links:

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:

One of the best things you can say about someone is that they continued to grow, develop, change, improve, and evolve throughout their life. Indeed, personal growth is crucial if you want to become like that role model you most admire, have more influence as a leader, create better relationships with those joining you on a task, and ultimately, to bring positive change into our troubled world.

In September, I achieved a lifelong goal of publishing a book, The Power of Flexing, that summarizes decades of research and teaching on this very topic. This talk brings that book alive by sharing some of the stories of people who have put growth prominently on their agenda, suggesting key practices that facilitate growth for anyone anywhere, and highlighting what companies can do to enable the growth journeys of their employees.

About Ashford:

Susan (Sue) Ashford is the Michael and Susan Jandernoa Professor in the Management and Organizations group at Michigan Ross. She served previously on the faculty of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and received her MS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University.

Sue’s passion is using her teaching and research work to help people to be maximally effective in their work lives, with an emphasis on self-leadership, proactivity, change from below, and leadership and its development. She teaches across several programs at Ross, in the Leading Women Executives program of the Corporate Leadership Center, and for various companies. Sue recently published a book that lives out her passion entitled The Power of Flexing: How to Use Small Daily Experiments to Create Big Life-Changing Growth (Harper Collins Business, 2021).

Sue is an award-winning scholar, having published papers in the fields’ best journals in the areas of leadership development and leader effectiveness, middle management voice and issue selling, job insecurity, and individual proactivity (e.g., self-management and feedback seeking). Her research has been summarized as advice for managers in the Harvard Business Review, the Harvard Business Review blog, New York Magazine, and The Conversation. Sue is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and was awarded the prestigious Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management by that Association in 2017.

Host:

Dave M. Mayer, Center for Positive Organizations Research Director; John H. Mitchell Professor of Business Ethics; Chair of Management and Organizations Area

Series Sponsors:

The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2021-22 Positive Links Speaker Series.

How do crystal structures at the microscopic level lead to macro effects in art objects? Just what is a polymer? Is smell a material? Consider these questions and more at the intersection of materials, making, and meaning along with UMMA Curator for University Learning and Programs and U-M faculty Tim Chambers (Materials Science and Engineering).

Subject Matters is offered in collaboration with the UM faculty who worked with UMMA to curate installations in Curriculum / Collection for use by their university classes. Together, we are bringing the UMMA classroom experience to you. You’ll learn about the subject matter, about art, and you’ll have loads of fun doing it. We hope to see you there.

* Participants will be asked to do a teensie-weensie little assignment before the session. Don’t worry. It’ll be fun!

This free event meets in-person event at UMMA. Registration Required. Register Here.

We’d love to see you at all the Subject Matters sessions! Keep your eyes open for new Subject Matters sessions in upcoming semesters.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund.

Project Management Certification (March 27, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91083 91083-21677007@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 27, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://www.bus.umich.edu/Conferences/Project-Management-Certification-2022/Default.aspx

Location:
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.

April is National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem, write a poem, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said, "Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better."

How to Get Involved

Noon Poems
Take a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv.

Prompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge
Creative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.

Pop-Up Poems
Stroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows, on the diag, on buses, and more.

Data science and AI are having a significant impact on society in uncountable ways, leading to huge benefits in many cases. Yet, increasingly complex analytical pipelines working with poorly understood heterogeneous data sets can give rise to harms in many ways. Furthermore, there could be deleterious systemic effects such as the magnification of disinformation or surveillance capitalism. There has been tremendous recent interest in understanding and managing these concerns.
The Mini-Symposium is a part of the Future Leaders Summit two day event and is open to the public. Below is the event schedule:
1:15 PM - Opening Remarks, Jing Liu (Managing Director, MIDAS, University of Michigan)
1:20 PM - Why Data Scientists Should Care About Data Equity, H.V. Jagadish (Director, MIDAS, University of Michigan)

2022 Ford Distinguished Lecture in Physics | The Magic of Moiré Quantum Matter (April 6, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84834 84834-21635102@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 6, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Department Colloquia

Featuring an in-person lecture: 4th Floor Rackham Amphitheatre
or
Youtube remote link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcLKoAgfHNs

Abstract:
The understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter has challenged physicists for decades. The discovery three years ago of correlated phases and superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene led to the emergence of a new materials platform to investigate strongly correlated physics, namely moiré quantum matter. These systems exhibit a plethora of quantum phases, such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, magnetism, Chern insulators, and more. In this talk, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will review some of the recent advances in the field, focusing on the newest generation of moiré quantum systems, where correlated physics, superconductivity, and other fascinating phases can be studied with unprecedented tunability. He will end the talk with an outlook of some exciting directions in this emerging field.

Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from MIT studies novel condensed-matter systems and is especially well-known for his pioneering work with twisted bilayer graphene.

He has received the 2020 Wolf Prize in Physics and the 2020 Buckley Prize in Condensed Matter Physics, among many other honors.

The usual pandemic-related caveats apply, but we are currently anticipating an in-person lecture and a remote feed as well.

ISR Insights Speaker Series:
"Native Americans of the Upper Great Lakes: Sociological and Historical Perspectives on Land and Schooling Among the Anishinaabek"
Thursday, April 7, noon ET via Zoom

Presenters:
-Arland Thornton, Department of Sociology, Institute for Social Research, and Native American Studies, the University of Michigan
-Eric Hemenway, Anishanaabe/Odawa. Director of Archives and Records, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Harbor Springs, Michigan.
-Linda Young-DeMarco, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan
-Alphonse Pitawanakwat, Odawa member of Wiikemkoong First Nation Unceded Territory, Ontario, Canada. Lecturer in American Culture and Native American Studies at the University of Michigan.
-Lindsey Willow Smith, Citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, University of Michigan Class of 2022, History and Museum Studies B.A.

Abstract:
In this presentation a team of researchers from the University of Michigan and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Archive and Records Department discuss the land and schooling of the Anishinaabek—the Three Fires of the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. Of particular focus is the spread of Euro-American schooling among the Anishinaabek from the early 1800s through 1950. We trace the establishment of schools in the early 1800s and the growth of literacy and school attainment from the 1850s through 1940. In addition to considering schooling levels and trends of the Anishinaabek at the national level, we examine state differences, and focus on one particular group, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, who today live in Waganakising—the Land of the Crooked Tree—located in the northwest portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Project Management Certification (April 10, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91083 91083-21677008@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 10, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://www.bus.umich.edu/Conferences/Project-Management-Certification-2022/Default.aspx

This presentation will explore:
-what search firms do and do not do;
-the expertise and blindspots that search firms bring to the process;
-their costs and requirements of confidentiality;
-their impact on the diversity of presidential hires and on presidential tenure;
-salaries of presidents across the last 10 years.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chandra Bhat, University Distinguished Teaching Professor and Joe J. King Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, to the Distinguished Lecture Series! For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be offering hybrid attendance options.

This presentation undertakes a deep-dive into the kinds of activities that individuals are likely to pursue when freed from the task of driving in the future transportation landscape of fully automated vehicles (AVs). Dr. Bhat's study indicates that “productive use of time” is not necessarily always tied with activities, such as work and study; rather, being able to partake in relatively “chill” activities (such as sleeping, relaxing, and gazing out the window) is also considered as good use of time. This suggests caution in the interpretation of what are traditionally referred to as “productive” activities, and also, a need for scholarly restraint in the use of the label “multi-tasking” to exclusively refer to non-passive activities.

Property and Being Under Colonial Conditions in Asia and Africa (May 13, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/94706 94706-21761599@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 13, 2022 9:00am
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Department of History

This conference will be hybrid. Join the Zoom meeting here: https://myumi.ch/1nMed

Historians have long proposed that property is as much about relationships between people as it is about the ownership of “things.” It is about both belonging, and belongings. Property offers a window onto contestations over power, social relations, resources, identity and political imagination. Histories of property in Asia and Africa, in particular, are intertwined with histories of colonial expansion, the emergence of new forms of state power, the creation of new categories/taxonomies of governance, the appropriation of indigenous lands, the reordering of social relations, and new or reworked imaginaries of property

The purpose of this interdisciplinary conference, “Property and Being under Colonial Conditions in Asia and Africa,” is to explore how comparing intellectual, cultural, social, political-economic, and legal histories of property from African and Asian colonial contexts may help us rethink ideas about land, ownership, dispossession, rights, credit, subjectivities, and political imaginations. Participants will engage with the historically sedimented entanglements of colonial policy and indigenous practices, developmentalist desires, and cultural and climatic change. Conversations across these regions may thus enable new understandings of property histories.

When you’re on a mental “hamster wheel,” running faster doesn’t help. Slowing down, stepping to the side, and seeing from another perspective does.

In our work as faculty, practitioners, and researchers, we may find ourselves getting stuck in the same places, finding that our familiar approaches fail to move us forward. How do we refresh and jumpstart inspiration? To get “unstuck,” we need to try new perspectives and approaches. In this workshop, we use arts-based activities to open up new neural pathways. We refresh our thinking and jumpstart inspiration with poetry, visual art, and movement. This class calls upon a range of intelligences and skills inherent in us all – no formal arts training required.

Experimenting with new materials can provoke new insight.

What to expect:

*immersive, artistic exploration
*guided critical reflection
*one-on-one discussion with peers
*two hours that fly by

What you’ll get:

*a refreshed perspective on an area or question that’s important to you
*a dedicated time and space for exploring that area in new ways

BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!

Every day at the University of Michigan, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.

The goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.

Throughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

Certifiable Autonomous Systems Through Online Verification — CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series (July 21, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/95889 95889-21791378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 21, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Engineers and computer scientists are currently developing autonomous systems whose entire set of behaviors in future, untested situations is unknown. For instance, how can a designer foresee all situations that an autonomous vehicle will face? Keeping in mind that many autonomous systems are safety-critical or operation-critical, it is irresponsible to deploy such systems without testing all possible situations---this, however, seems impossible since even the most important possible situations are often unmanageably many. This presentation proposes a paradigm shift that will make it possible to guarantee safety in unforeseeable situations (under mild model assumptions): Instead of verifying the correctness of a system before deployment, we propose online verification, a new verification paradigm where a system continuously checks the correctness of its next action by itself in its current environment (and only in it) in a just-in-time manner. The usefulness of this method will be demonstrated primarily for autonomous driving and robotics.

Traffic Signal Control via Decentralized Decomposition Approaches (August 24, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96271 96271-21792217@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, August 24, 2022 1:00pm
Location:
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Traffic congestion is a global pressing issue that can be mitigated via effective traffic signal control schemes. In this presentation, based on a cell transmission model, the team from the University of Michigan coordinated the control of traffic signals at multiple intersections to maximize vehicle throughput on corridors or road networks under uncertain traffic demand and vehicle turning. They formulated a two-stage, stochastic mixed-integer linear program using finite samples of the uncertain parameter, and combined Benders decomposition with the alternating direction method of multipliers to develop spatially-temporally distributed algorithms for optimizing the problem. They then tested instances of traffic signal control on corridors and grid networks, based on synthetic and real-world traffic data. The results show that

1. considering traffic uncertainty can significantly improve the signal control quality and
2. decentralized decomposition approaches can quickly find high-quality signal plans for multiple intersections in complex road networks, and fully utilize the computation and communication technologies in smart-transportation infrastructures.

We developed optical probes which enabled the tracking of individual molecular cargos by dynein motors in live neurons for 900 µm. Analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the motion showed that the cargo switched stochastically from one to five pairs during the transport over this distance. Clearly resolved single-molecular steps revealed that the dwell times between individual steps requires the hydrolysis of 2 ATPs. The new proposed model is consistent with extensive structural, single-molecule and biochemical measurements. The motion is described by a steady-state “effective temperature” 6-fold higher than 310 K. The application of the fluctuation theorem, first proved in 1993, is used to give a minimum “uncertainty principle” limit, ΔQ ε² ≥ 2kB T𝚎𝚏𝚏, where ΔQ = T𝚎𝚏𝚏ΔS is the heat entropy and ε² ≡ 〈x²〉 ─ 〈x²〉/〈x〉² is the displacement normalize dispersion of motion.

About the Positive Links Speaker Series:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the Event:
As workplaces have become increasingly disconnected, individuals have a stronger need for a sense of connection and community. They want to work in environments in which they can be their authentic selves and are valued for their contributions. Leaders are expected to build these types of environments, but to do so in a moment when their plates are already full.

This talk will explore the how of inclusive leadership. Based on her body of research and advisory work with organizations, Quinetta will offer strategies for developing an inclusive mindset and practicing leadership behaviors for creating more inclusive work environments. By incorporating inclusive leadership into daily activities and interactions, we can foster workplaces in which everyone feels enabled to be their best selves.

About Roberson:
Quinetta M. Roberson, PhD is the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Management and Psychology at Michigan State University. Prior to her current position, she was an Endowed Chair at Villanova University and a tenured professor at Cornell University. Natural Language Processing Workshop Series (September 19, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97509 97509-21794662@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 19, 2022 3:00pm
Location: West Hall
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Written text contains a wealth of information that can be turned into research data to study almost every aspect of human behavior, human health and our society. However, converting text to usable data requires an understanding of standard techniques from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). MIDAS and the AI Lab are jointly organizing a monthly series of NLP workshops during the Fall 2022 semester. The first installment is on Sept. 19, and the second installment is on Oct. 10. Each session does not directly depend upon information from previous sessions.

In the first workshop of the series, we will provide a broad overview of NLP and introduce basic concepts used in NLP, including keyword counting, sentiment classification, and topic modeling. Additional topics include how NLP can be used, what the data look like, what (social science) questions could be answered using NLP, and more.

The second session, on Oct 10, is titled "What's in Text Data?"
Written text contains rich information about human knowledge, opinions, and communication styles, but how do we extract insight about all this from the data? In this second workshop in the series, we will first introduce Jupyter notebooks, a popular platform for performing data science research. Then we will discuss how to choose a dataset for your research question, extract your own dataset from social media sites like Reddit and Twitter, and convert the raw text data to a usable format. We will then explore several methods to extract information and gain insight from text data, including named entity recognition and sentiment analysis.

The CEW+ Advocacy Symposium returns in person this fall to bring together staff, faculty, students, and community members to create change through introspection, dialogue, and action.

This year’s symposium will feature:

Opening Session: Financial Empowerment roundtable discussions and lunch hosted by Laurita Thomas, Executive in Residence, Center for Positive Organizations, President, American Research Universities Human Resources Institute;  with opening remarks from Anne Ollen, MA, CEBS, Managing Director, TIAA Institute; and Tiffany Marra, PhD, CEW+ Director.

A capstone presentation by outgoing CEW+ Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist, Theresa Anderson, Senior Researcher, Urban Institute. Dr. Anderson’s work explores the networks that Michigan student parents navigate, providing insights on policy and practice changes that would make it easier for parenting students in the state, and specifically in the U-M system, to meet their educational goals. CEW+ will also announce the incoming 2023 CEW+ Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist.

Workshops hosted by CEW+, the Ginsberg Center, the Program on Intergroup Relations, and SAPAC are designed to showcase a variety of approaches to advocacy. Workshops provide attendees the opportunity to engage in self-reflection, group discussion, and action-planning to advance their advocacy efforts on behalf of causes that are central to their personal and professional goals.

The awarding of the 2022 Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change. Awardees include faculty, staff, and students whose sustained efforts have resulted in greater equity with regard to gender, race, class, age disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Awardees will present lightning talks and participate in a panel discussion.

The Christobel Kotelawela Weerasinghe Lecture, “From Protests to Policy Reforms: Advancing Gender Equality in a Complex, Multi-ethnic and Multi-Religious Nigeria,” presented by Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, founding Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center and executive board member of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding and the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund. Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi is a professor, lawyer, and civil rights activist whose work is focused on maternal and reproductive health advocacy, gender-based violence, social justice, and the underrepresentation of women in governance.

Location: Undergraduate Science Building
Organized By: Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program

Once a month, WISE hosts a journal club for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff to discuss recent research on STEM equity. This month's article is "Outperforming yet undervalued: Undergraduate women in STEM." Feel free to bring your lunch!

Does achievement in STEM courses correlate with perceived expertise in STEM by student peers? In this session we will discuss findings in a recent study that women are outperforming men in both physical and life science undergraduate courses, while simultaneously continuing to be perceived as less-able students. Bring your ideas or just your curiosity - all are welcome to join in the discussion.
