Presented by Emily A. Carter, Princeton University
Lecture Title: "Mechanisms for Sustainable Fuel and Chemical Production from First Principles"

Abstract

Someday the world’s liquid fuels needed for ships and airplanes will come from sustainable sources and low-energy processing. We are far from that day. While that fact is unfortunate, it opens up exciting opportunities for researchers from many different fields to work together to realize that vision. I will report on some of my research group’s contributions toward this goal, as we develop and apply quantum mechanics-based simulation methods to unravel mechanisms associated with (photo) electrochemical water oxidation and carbon dioxide reduction at semiconductor electrodes and plasmon-catalyzed bond breaking over metal nanoparticles. The talk will focus primarily on CO2 photoelectroreduction to fuel precursors but will also outline the potential for plasmonic catalysis to replace, e.g., the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. This latter work illustrates the potential to develop a non-thermal, low-pressure, visible-light-based approach to ammonia synthesis and hence to sustainable fertilizer production.

Short Biography

Emily A. Carter is the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Gerhard R. Andlinger Professor in Energy and the Environment, as well as Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Applied and Computational Mathematics at Princeton University. "OWNING EXPERTISE"
Presented by Michigan News in the Office of the Vice President for Communications, this interactive talk by Katie Orenstein, founder and CEO of The OpEd Project, addresses core questions of thought leadership: What do we know, why does it matter, and how can we maximize our impact? The goal is for attendees to leave with bold ideas, a deeper sense of what they know and stand for, and actionable steps for public engagement—a U-M presidential initiative.

All faculty at the University of Michigan are invited and encouraged to attend.

ABOUT THE OPED PROJECT
The OpEd Project is a think tank and leadership organization founded to change who writes history. They are a community of journalists and thought leaders who actively share knowledge, resources and connections across color, creed, class, sexuality, gender, orientation and more. Through their nationally acclaimed curriculum, and through a portfolio of programs in partnership with leading institutions across the nation and the globe, their goal is to accelerate the ideas and impact of underrepresented voices. For more information, visit theopedproject.org.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Katie Orenstein, founder and CEO of The OpEd Project, writes and speaks frequently about the intersection of media and mythology—that is, what we think is fact or fiction and how that shapes our ideas about politics, culture and history. She has contributed to the op-ed pages of The New York Times, The Washington Post and Miami Herald. Her commentaries on women, politics, popular culture, mythology and human rights have been nationally syndicated and appear in anthologies. Orenstein, a graduate of Harvard (BA) and Columbia (MA), has lectured at Harvard and Stanford universities, and appeared on ABC TV World News, Good Morning America, MSNBC, CNN, and NPR All Things Considered.

"Nanocrystallinity, Supracrystals: Unexpected Behavior"

ABSTRACT: The nanocrystals with low size distribution self assemble in 3D superlattices called supracrystals. The crystalline structure of nanocrystals called nanocrystallinity plays a key role on these self-assemblies Heterogeneous and homogeneous growth processes of supracrystals take place inducing marked changes in their physical properties.

We describe some physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials differing by the crystalline structures called nanocrystallinity: It is demonstrated that nanocrystallinity plays a major role in the final structure when nanocrystals are subjected to oxidation processes (Kinkendall effect). Concerning the optical properties, some processes are markedly affected by the crystalline structure whereas others are negligeable.

“Clustered” and “eggs” structures are hydrophobic supracrystals are dispersed in aqueous solution with a very high stability (almost two years). Solubilization of hydrophobic supracrystal in aqueous solution is obtained with Co and Au supracrystals with appearance of tunable plasmonic metamaterials. With Au supracrystals, the optical properties revealed that the fingerprint of nanocrystal is preserved even for large crystalline aggregates demonstrating that the nanocrystal could be used as a probe for investigating the optical properties of such assemblies.

Toby Millman is a multidisciplinary artist living in Hamtramck, working with printmaking, photography, collage, narrative and book arts. She earned her BA from Hampshire College and her MFA from Stamps School of Art and Design and is currently teaching printmaking and drawing at the Residential College. The prints works in this exhibition are based on extracted imagery from photographs taken around various locales within the past few years, using inanimate forms to allude to issues of safety, comfort and population control. These images include objects designed to modify the ways we navigate or control our environment and include barriers, traffic cones, highway signage all in states of disrepair, disuse, or dysfunction.

Towards geotechnical site characterization, seismic piezocone penetration testing (SCPTu) offers up to five separate measurements with depths from a single sounding: cone tip resistance (qt), sleeve friction (fs), porewater pressure (u2), time rate dissipation (t50), and shear wave velocity (Vs). Thus it is an expedient and economical means for obtaining stratification of the ground and the determination of a variety of soil engineering parameters for analysis and design, including nonlinear stress-strain-strength curves for clays and sands. Calibration and documentation of selected geoparameters are presented with statistical datasets. Moreover, direct CPT methodologies have been developed for application to shallow footings, piling foundations, and seismic liquefaction evaluation. Case studies are presented to show the utilization of SCPTu in geotechnics.

Leakage is a major safety issue that, if left unchecked, may result in dam failure by various mechanisms. However, a lack of appropriate leakage investigation and monitoring can result in repairs that are unsuccessful in controlling or reducing leakage. A series of techniques have been developed to help in the assessment of leakage and seepage in dams. These techniques allow for identification of recharge zones, preferential paths, and transit times, which aid in monitoring and mitigating the dam leakage. The presentation describes various techniques and reviews several projects in the United States and abroad involving detection and prevention of dam and reservoir leakage, including leakage evaluation, analysis, design, construction, and post-construction verification of repairs.

The dynamics of a nearly-AdS2 spacetime with boundaries can be reduced to that of two particles in the anti-de Sitter space. We determine the class of physically meaningful wavefunctions, and prescribe the statistical mechanics of a black hole. We demonstrate how wavefunctions for a two-sided black hole and a regularized notion of trace can be used to construct thermal partition functions, and more generally, arbitrary density matrices. We also obtain correlation functions of external operators. The talk is based on work with A. Kitaev in the preprint arXiv:1808.07032.

Dark matter and inflation represent two of the biggest open question in cosmology. Although they are generally thought of as distinct and unrelated phenomena, here I will ask whether they might be closely connected. In particular, I will describe a class of models in which a stable inflaton is produced as a thermal relic in the early universe and constitutes the dark matter. I will show that the annihilations of these inflatons can efficiently reheat the universe, and I will identify several examples of inflationary potentials within this scenario which can accommodate all cosmic microwave background observables. As a simple example, I will discuss a model in which inflaton annihilations that take place through a Higgs portal interaction, leading to encouraging prospects for future direct detection experiments.

ABSTRACT
"Engineering immunity via chemistry and materials design: Toward an HIV vaccine and enhanced therapies for cancer"

Our laboratory focuses on applying principles from engineering and technologies from materials science, chemistry, and bioengineering to develop new approaches to study the immune system, create new diagnostics, and create next generation vaccines and cancer immunotherapies. Two examples drawn from our work on HIV vaccines and cancer immunotherapy will be described:

The kinetics of antigen availability following immunization impact follicular helper T cell priming, germinal center responses, and ultimate antibody production, but clinically-relevant methods to control the duration of antigen delivery to lymph nodes in subunit vaccines are lacking. We conjugated antigens derived from the gp140 HIV envelope trimer with a peptide-polymer affinity tag containing repeating phosphoserine (pSer) residues that binds tightly to the most common clinical adjuvant, aluminum hydroxide (Alhydrogel, or alum). Site specific modification of HIV antigens with varying numbers of pSer groups allowed the binding strength to alum to be tuned and alum-bound antigens were presented from alum particle surfaces with a defined orientation. pSer-antigen conjugates in alum could be tuned to steadily release antigen from an injection site over multiple weeks in mice. This persistence led to improved lymph node uptake and colocalization of antigen with B cell follicles. Ultimately, a 20-fold increase in antibody titers relative to the unmodified protein was observed four weeks after primary immunization with both pSer-eOD and pSer-SOSIP conjugates, and long-lived plasma cells in bone marrow were doubled by immunization with pSer-modified immunogens. Additionally, conjugation of pSer linkers to the base of SOSIP trimers minimized the formation of base-specific antibodies, suggesting that antigen arrives in lymph nodes still bound to alum particles.

In a second example, a novel strategy for targeting antigens and immunostimulatory agents to lymph nodes for therapeutic cancer vaccines will be described. Lymph node targeting is achieved clinically is sentinel lymph node mapping in cancer patients, where small-molecule dyes are efficiently delivered to lymph nodes by binding to serum albumin. To mimic this process in vaccine delivery, we synthesized amphiphiles designed to non-covalently bind vaccine antigens and adjuvants to endogenous albumin. These “albumin-hitchhiking” amphiphiles were efficiently delivered to lymph nodes following injection, leading to as much as 30-fold amplified cellular immune responses and anti-tumor immunity. When combined with complementary immunotherapy agents, these lymph node-targeted vaccines are capable of eradicating large established tumors in several mouse models, providing a blueprint for curative immunotherapies. These examples illustrate the power of bioengineering approaches in shaping the immune response in vivo.

"Defect-Tolerant? Nanoscale Insights into the Structural and Chemical Determinants of Halide Perovskite Optoelectronic Performance"

ABSTRACT:
Halide perovskites have attracted widespread interest for application in optoelectronics including solar cells, LEDs, and lasers because of their low-temperature synthesis and reported defect tolerance, in stark contrast to commercialized silicon and thin film technologies. In this talk, I will discuss how we are using nanoprobe X-ray microscopy to investigate the relationship between the defects that do appear in hybrid perovskites and optoelectronic performance and stability. Using a series of model materials, we have studied the heterogeneity in local chemistry and structure in these films and its significant impact on charge collection and degradation. I will also share insights from our in situ nanoprobe investigations of non-stoichiometry in operating perovskite solar cells. By understanding and mitigating defects in the bulk and at interfaces, we aim to systematically accelerate the development of these optoelectronic materials.

BIO:
Dr. David P. Fenning is an Assistant Professor in NanoEngineering at UC San Diego, where his group researches materials for solar energy conversion and storage. Currently, his work focuses on defects and reliability in silicon and hybrid perovskite solar cells and CO2 electrocatalysis for solar fuels. We study the effect of the factorization of infrared dynamics on the process of particle creation near a black hole horizon. We show that the emission of soft particles factors out of the S-matrix in the fixed-background approximation and to leading order in the soft limit. The factorization is implemented by dressing the incoming and outgoing asymptotic states with clouds of soft photons and soft gravitons. We find that while the soft photon cloud has no effect, the soft graviton cloud induces a phase shift in the Bogolyubov coefficients relating the incoming and outgoing modes. However, the flux of outgoing particles, given by the absolute value of the Bogolyubov coefficient, is insensitive to this phase.

The past few years have seen a growing interest to explore dark matter candidates that are outside of the standard WIMP / axion paradigms. A resurgence of macroscopic dark matter candidates have brought with it a mix of whimsical names — primordial black holes, asymmetric dark matter nuggets, and dark blobs — to name a few. In general the difficulty with macro dark matter is not the observational constraints, which are typically quite sparse and weak, but rather the challenge is finding a well-motivated mechanism for producing gram-sized dark matter objects. In this talk, I will argue that “dark quark nuggets” are a generic prediction of confining, hidden-sector gauge theories. I will discuss the phenomenology of these theories, the cosmological production of dark quark nuggets, and their observational probes.

The central region of Supernovae are one of the hottest and densest regions in the Universe. Due to the high temperatures, particles with sub-GeV masses can be copiously produced if they have non-negligible couplings to the Standard Model. If dark matter has sub-GeV mass it will be produced in the hot Supernovae core and it will have sufficiently large momenta to be detectable in direct detection experiments. In this talk I discuss the sensitivity of current and future Xenon based direct detection experiments to a simplified model of dark matter which interacts with the Standard Model via the dark photon portal.

While the laws of quantum mechanics have remained unchanged and have passed all tests for the last eighty-five years, new discoveries about the exotic states that they allow, “entanglement”, and ideas from quantum information theory, have greatly changed our perspective, and some believe that a “second quantum revolution” is currently underway. The discovery of unexpected “topological states of matter”, and their possible use for “topologically-protected quantum information processing” is one of the important themes of these developments, and will be described.

ABSTRACT
"Challenging Nanostructured Materials for Advanced Energy Devices"

One of the key challenges facing the widespread use and commercialization of promising energy devices (i.e. fuel cells, batteries, organic solar cells etc.) is the high cost of the electrocatalytic and electrolyte materials and inefficiencies in their assembly and utilization. In this talk, I will present three examples of how we are designing nanomaterials such as graphene-based carbons, MXenes, and bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys that can be incorporated into new architectures for high performance nanostructured-enabled energy devices.

1) Transparent Electronics. We have developed a fully automated Spin Spray Layer by Layer assembly system with sub-second deposition cycle times allowing nano-level control over film growth with a demonstration of transparent (invisible) battery electrodes. Techniques for developing freestanding multifunctional single-walled nanotube (SWNT) and MXene composite thin films for solar cell transparent conductive electrodes will also be described.

2) Electrocatalysts. I will describe a new class of materials, Pt58Cu15Ni5P22 bulk metallic glass that can circumvent Pt-based anode poisoning and agglomeration/dissolution typically associated with supported catalysts during long-term operation in fuel cells. By using subtractive (dealloying) and additive (galvanic replacement) techniques we can push these materials into new directions beyond their glass formability. These amorphous metal alloys can serve as an interesting platform for next-generation catalysts and devices such as the first all bulk metallic glass micro fuel cell.

3) New Device Architectures. Our development of a mesoporous catalytic membrane for Li-O2 batteries recently led us to the recent development of vampire batteries that use heme molecules as a redox mediator. We will also describe our latest efforts on Förster resonance energy (FRET) based solar cells with a single junction power conversion efficiency >10% for a polymer based solar cell as well as Perovskite solar cell efforts.

Jennifer Brea's Sundance award-winning documentary, Unrest, is a personal journey from patient to advocate to storyteller. Jennifer is 28, working on her PhD at Harvard, and months away from marrying the love of her life when a mysterious fever leaves her bedridden. When doctors tell her it's "all in her head," she picks up her camera as an act of defiance and brings us into a hidden world of millions that medicine abandoned.

I will discuss how the string landscape might inform how we think about low energy effective field theories coupled to gravity. By studying the largest-to-date ensembles of geometries for string compactifications, we find several striking generic features: large hidden gauge sectors, regions of strong coupling, and large numbers of light axions. Understanding these ensembles, and the landscape as whole, requires a new set of tools, both formal and computational, including new mathematics and tools from data science, the development of which I will discuss.

ABSTRACT

"Bioengineering of synergistic innate and adaptive immunotherapy of cancer"

Harnessing the immune system to attack cancer has started a revolution in oncology. The ability of the adaptive immune system to track such evolving pathologies has provided robust responses and cures in 10-25% of previously intractable cancers such as metastatic melanoma. The next frontier is to “raise the tail” of the survival curve in such cancers by finding synergistic combination therapies. Chemical and biological engineers have pioneered approaches that are well suited to such investigations, bringing quantitative problem-solving synthetic and analytical toolkits to bear. I’ll provide examples from my lab where cocktails of anti-tumor antibodies and cytokines have accomplished highly safe and efficacious therapies as tested in mouse models of cancer.

The presentation is about a new approach for performing, analyzing test data, and modeling the shear modulus and damping from Resonant Column Tests. The “New Approach” makes use of the transfer function method of John P. Wolf (Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction) for modeling the soil specimen as a viscoelastic, distributed mass element. The new solution is simple and easy to implement with a spreadsheet. It provides for accurate determination of shear modulus and damping over a range of frequencies not just the resonant frequency. The analysis of data is done for each applied value of torque and frequency and captures the true nonlinear properties of soil. The method is the basis for the new ASTM Standard D4015-15ε1. Dr. Drnevich will discuss additional uses of the new approach for simulation and modeling.

Vince Drnevich received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame and he completed the Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan. He held faculty positions
at the University of Kentucky and Purdue University, serving as Chair and Acting Dean at Kentucky and the Head of School at Purdue. His research focuses on the engineering properties of soils, especially as measured by stress wave propagation and electromagnetic wave propagation. Dr. Drnevich has been recognized for both his teaching and research by many national awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Testing and Materials, and the American Society for Engineering Education.

ABSTRACT

"Molecular Engineering of Advanced Imaging Agents and Therapeutics:
Using ChE principles to aid in design"

Traditionally, drug development has proceeded in a linear fashion from optimizing target affinity, validating in cell culture, testing in animal models, and moving to the clinic. For some drugs, such as small molecules, extensive data are available to define empirical ‘rules’ to help guide development of early screening hits to avoid attrition at later stages. However, for new, more advanced therapeutics, sufficient data are not available for empirical guidance. Because of their more complex structures, many of these agents have transport limitations within the body. These include the transient kinetics of an imaging agent reaching its target and washing out of the background or a macromolecular therapeutic trying to navigate its way through the tumor microenvironment and bind a receptor, either inside or outside the cell.

Our lab uses predictive computational transport simulations to guide the design of these agents without the need for a priori data. I will outline several examples where these transport limitations give rise to counter-intuitive results. These include i) the design of antibody-drug
conjugates, where lower potency can result in higher tumor killing, ii) directed evolution of stabilized alpha helical peptides where lower cellular efficacy can more efficiently hit currently ‘undruggable’ targets in the body, and iii) use of high charge density to improve oral
absorption and targeting of a ‘disease screening pill.’ By incorporating these predictive, multiscale simulations – from the molecular level to the whole organism scale – we can use molecular engineering to help design novel therapeutics and imaging agents rather than develop them through costly trial-and-error.

Comics allow us to explain feelings and events in ways that bridge time and space and identity in unexpected ways. Comics can give us a way to tell stories we might not tell in other ways, or which might not be heard if we did. In this two part workshop, we’ll first hear from people about why and how comics worked for their stories, followed by a workshop activity for artists and storytellers to collaborate on telling stories about life with disabilities.

In this talk I will study the computational complexity of vacua and near-vacua in field theory and string theory. From analogy to protein folding, it is natural to expect that finding stable vacua is computationally hard, in the sense of complexity theory. However, I will demonstrate that this is the case even for metastable vacua. The problem is exacerbated in string theory, since setting up the hard problem of finding string vacua requires actually computing the scalar potential in a controlled regime. Such computations involve solving instances of computationally hard problems. Cosmological implications will be discussed in light of a recently proposed measure that utilizes computational complexity.

The elements we see around us are all forged in the glowing fires of stars. Nuclear energy and nuclear reactions are driving these fires, and the only way to ever understand how they work is by producing the relevant nuclei here on Earth and studying their properties. For this reason, among others, the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, FRIB, is currently under construction in the heart of Michigan. When built, FRIB will finally give us unique access to those nuclei that are responsible for building the whole Universe.

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Self-affirmations can be powerful tools to attenuate threats to the self that emerge from the stressors of organizational life. When people are given opportunities to affirm core values and relationships, they are more responsive to otherwise difficult information. Drawing on decades of experimental and field studies, Sherman will present research on how, when, and why self-affirmations can lead to more adaptive outcomes, and the implications for organizational outcomes.

About Sherman:
David Sherman is a professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a social and health psychologist whose research centers on how people cope with threatening events and information. He is Editor at the Personality and Social Psychology Review and is the president of the International Society for Self and Identity. Sherman’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.

ABSTRACT
"Complexity in the chemistry and physics of lipid membranes as a handle to activate the delivery of cargo to cells"

Lipid materials having nanostructures that deviate from the conventional flat bilayer arrangement such as hexagonally packed lipid tubes and bicontinuous cubic phases are ubiquitous in nature. Their role remains elusive but over the years several pathologies and organelle functions have been coupled to lipid membrane structural complexity. In this talk we will discuss lipid membrane polymorphism and how it can be exploited to generate a new class of materials for the delivery of cargo to cells. We combine a number of techniques including X-ray scattering, cryo-EM, and cell culture to demonstrate that the structure of lipid nanoparticles is a powerful handle to boost the delivery of genes to cells. The simple argument that non-bilayer phases having intertwined nanoscale channels exist to increase surface-to-volume ratio might be insufficient to completely describe the experimental findings. We will show that synthetic lipid and lipid-polymer hybrid materials are able to capture many structural and dynamic properties seen in natural systems, when local heterogeneities and self-assembly out of equilibrium is taken into account.

I will discuss recent progress in calculating a precision photon spectrum for heavy wino annihilation to photons, along with implications for indirect detection experiments. I will review arguments that the 3 TeV mass wino is one of the simplest WIMP dark matter candidates. Then I will discuss how the large separation of scales from 3 TeV to the weak scale leads to a breakdown of perturbation theory. I will demonstrate how one can rely on modern effective field theory techniques to restore the convergence of the perturbative expansion, and will discuss our precision prediction for the wino annihilation spectrum. I will review the status of searching for these photons using a ground based air Cherenkov telescope array (the H.E.S.S. experiment), along with the impact of our calculation on the interpretation of these limits.
