The class will use segments of films as a starting point for stimulating discussions about families. During each of 5 sessions we will discuss one of these films: “The Great Santini” (1979); “Ordinary People” (1980); “Crooklyn” (1994); “The Wedding Banquet” (1993); and “When a Man Loves a Woman” (1994).
Participants can view the whole film at home before class if they wish. Students will receive discussion questions to ponder before each session.
We will look at: the films’ portrayals of communication, handling of feelings and conflict, family structure, and gender roles, as well as the family’s culture and environment.
Instructor Arlene Weisz is a retired social worker and social work professor who enjoyed using films as part of teaching about families for about 20 years.
This study group will meet on Thursdays for five weeks beginning on October 21. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

The advancement of science requires decommissioning old experiments and pursuing new experiments. But which new experiments? How should we decide? Professor Wells will show answering these questions necessarily goes well beyond scientific considerations and lays bare philosophical, economic, and political viewpoints. He will illustrate these principles in action for large-scale experiments such as particle colliders, nuclear research reactors, and missile defense tests.

Corrective Care: Institutionalizing Children in the Territory of Hawaiʻi (November 10, 2021 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88677 88677-21656597@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 10, 2021 4:30pm

This talk analyzes how social scientific knowledge structured practices of the institutionalization of Native Hawaiian children and other children of color in Territorial-era Hawaiʻi (1900-1959). Specifically, I look at the history of three connected institutions operated by the Territory of Hawaiʻi: the Waialeʻe Industrial School for Boys (opened in 1902), the Kawailoa Training School for Girls (opened in 1929), and the Waimano Home for the Feeble-Minded (opened in 1921). Social science provided the Territorial government language and “evidence” with which to argue that their practices of institutionalization were modern, progressive and humane, even when the official reports of those institutions suggested otherwise. I also look at how Native Hawaiians consistently attempted to continue their own forms of care despite the many ways that the Territorial government pathologized Native Hawaiian culture and families.

Maile Arvin is an assistant professor of History and Gender Studies at the University of Utah. She is a Native Hawaiian feminist scholar who works on issues of race, gender, science, and colonialism in Hawai'i and the broader Pacific.

Physical activity is fundamental to children’s growth, development, and social emotional health. School closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, eliminated many opportunities for youth to engage in structured exercise as many children lacked spaces to exercise or play sports in their neighborhoods. Children’s limited interactions with peers and lack of school support services to help them cope with the pandemic also lead to significant increases in child stress and anxiety levels.

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

Inspired by Nature: 20 Years of Art by Hava Gurevich
Hava Gurevich’s canvases pulsate with life. Bright colors and botanical motifs dance and tangle in abstract environments that bear resemblance to microscopic scans of cellular structures. “I am inspired by the elegant intricacy of patterns in nature that repeat on both small and large scales across a variety of lifeforms, from single cell amoebas to entire ecosystems.” The creative process for these works begins with drawing and photography. Images of daily encounters with nature and sketches of textures and details morph into lines, shapes and colors in acrylic paint. Patterns are abstracted and undulate across the canvas, forming the foundation of Gurevich’s visual language. Images from the imagination blend with botanical elements in vivid color combinations. These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!

Every day at the University of Michigan, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.

The goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.

Throughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

Inspired by Nature: 20 Years of Art by Hava Gurevich
Hava Gurevich’s canvases pulsate with life. Bright colors and botanical motifs dance and tangle in abstract environments that bear resemblance to microscopic scans of cellular structures. “I am inspired by the elegant intricacy of patterns in nature that repeat on both small and large scales across a variety of lifeforms, from single cell amoebas to entire ecosystems.” The creative process for these works begins with drawing and photography. .

In Watershed, fifteen contemporary artists explore the interconnected histories, present lives, and imagined futures of the Great Lakes region.

UMMA and the U-M Natural History Museum invite families with children ages 5 and up to drop in this summer to explore the artworks and learn about what we need to make a healthy environment.

Free, no registration required. Recommended age: 5 and up.

Saturday, July 30, 11am to 1 pm: Watershed DIY Tour & Activity at UMMA

Pick up an illustrated activity kit at the front desk and use it to explore Watershed and learn more about the art and the artists on display. The kit also provides materials necessary to make your own sunprint cyanotype, just like some of the artists in Watershed!

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.

How to Become a Fossil
Explore how fossils form and what parts of animals can become fossilized! How old are the earliest fossils? How old does something have to be before it is considered a fossil? You’ll touch some real fossils, learn the different types of fossil evidence, and discover what is necessary to become a fossil. Finally, we’ll discuss what kinds of things fossils can tell us, and how fossil casts are made in the museum!

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Sunday, August 28, 2022 from 1 to 4 pm: Healthy Rivers at U-M Museum of Natural History Build a river and watch what happens during a flood! You'll learn more about rivers and watersheds at this hands-on event. Dip your hands into our 10-foot model of a river and work together with others on an art activity to learn how rivers form and what it takes to keep water fresh and safe. How does pollution spread? How do we limit erosion? How do the ways people use land affect a river?

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.
