Zhou Family Band attracted international attention through their first Europe tour in 2017, which brought them to five countries and prestigious festivals such as World of Music, Arts and Dance festival (WOMAD). Hailed for its “tremendous energy” by BBC, regarded as “China’s avant-garde” by The Guardian, and selected by SOAS Radio as one of its five favorite acts from the 2017 WOMAD, Zhou Family Band presents an authentic Chinese tradition.

Coming from Lingbi, Anhui Province, part of the Central Plain area which formed the cradle of Chinese civilization, the Zhou family has been musicians for seven generations, and are bearers of a tradition that represents the cream of Chinese folk music – Bolin Laba, a national intangible cultural heritage of China as declared by UNESCO.

Join the North Campus DEI Collaborative impactXchange–College of Engineering, Stamps School of Art & Design, Duderstadt Center, School of Music, Theater and Dance, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Rackham Student Government in celebration of Diversity Week 2018.

The all day celebration aims to put students in the driver’s seat of decision making. We will explore the topic of VOTING and how voting and not voting impacts students and their peers (students will be able to register to vote too!). Students will learn what they can do in their communities to create change (regardless if they can vote or not). Live performances, exhibition posters on voting, workshops, food, and entertainment will make this event one that must not be missed.

When: Tuesday, October 9, 2018
Where: The Grove and Duderstadt Center
Time: 11:30am-1:00pm
Special Guest: Ruby Sales–Building a Vibrant Youth Culture at 6:30pm in the new Taubman College Commons.
Light refreshments will be served.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales has made the struggle for racial justice one of the centerpieces of her work through the SpiritHouse Project. Recognizing a need to nurture the hope that still resides in young people as well as to revive an intergenerational community and human compassion, in 2016 the SpiritHouse Project introduced Hope Zones.™ They are alternative learning spaces designed to strengthen the hope, courage, reason, and will of young people to individually and collectively stand up for themselves with dignity, clarity and nonviolent persistence. According to the Harvard Gazette, Ruby spoke about the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and shared, “Even in the face of challenges, there are reasons for hope. Freedom must be seen as a constant struggle. We don’t have to give in to despair.”

Michelle Held is a singer/songwriter with a distinctively soulful and captivating style. Brett Callwood of LA Weekly wrote, "Held plays a gentle folk with oft scathing lyrics. It's her voice that adds the X-Factor; that little bit of welcome strange." Held performs regularly throughout Southeast Michigan with recent national appearances that include Kansas City Folk Festival, Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe and Wheatland Music Festival. Michelle received a Telluride Troubadour honorable mention in 2018.

Emily Slomovits is an Ann Arbor-based musician, actress and teacher. She will be playing a mixture of classical violin pieces and fiddle tunes accompanied by Billy King from around the world at UMMA. Emily regularly plays music with her father and uncle, the duo, Gemini, as well as Annie and Rod Capps, and many other local musicians. She is a member of Spinning Dot Theatre, and has also been seen with The Encore Musical Theatre Company, The Croswell Opera House, Performance Network, and Wild Swan Theatre. Emily helps to lead Spinning Dot's Youth Company, and teaches violin, voice, and guitar for Manchester's Cultural Arts Strings program and the Grass Lake School of Music. Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series: Juliana Huxtable: POST (February 7, 2019 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58544 58544-14510866@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 7, 2019 5:10pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The iconic Juliana Huxtable is an American artist, writer, performer, and musician. Exploring the intersections of race, gender, queerness, technology and identity, Huxtable uses a diverse set of means to engage these issues, including self-portraiture, text-based prints, performance, nightlife, music, writing, and social media. Huxtable does not privilege any method over another, and the lines between different forms of her work are often fluid. This approach aids Huxtable in her ongoing critiques of existing social norms and categorical distinctions while indicating alternate, more hopeful possibilities. Huxtable references her own body and history as a transgender African American woman as she challenges the socio-political and cultural forces that inform normative conceptions of gender and sexuality. Huxtable’s Art and Performance work has been featured at Roskilde Festival, Denmark (2018), ReWire Festival, Netherlands (2018), Park Avenue Armory, New York (2018), Reena Spauldings, Solo show, New York (2017), Project Native Informant, London UK, (2017) MoMA PS1, New York (2014); “Take Ecstasy with Me,” Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2014); Frieze Projects, London (2014); and 2015 Triennial: Surround Audience, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2015); among other venues. She lives and works in New York, where she is the founder and DJ for Shock Value. And part of House of Ladosha a nightlife collective run by artists, DJs, writers, and fashion icons.

Huxtable’s work is included in Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from December 15, 2018 to April 7, 2019. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the exhibition examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. This exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today, including Judith Barry, Juliana Huxtable, Pierre Huyghe, Josh Kline, Laura Owens, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Cindy Sherman, Frances Stark, and Martine Syms.

Major funding for Ms. Huxtable's residency was provided by The Faculty Alliance for Diversity at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

Morin Khuur, also known as “horse head fiddle”, is a traditional Mongolian instrument. It was first introduced and performed in the US in 1962, the year that Mongolia joined the United Nation. “Mongolian Traditional Music of the Morin Khuur” was proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2003 and inscribed in the “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2008. Since then
morin khuur became a world-renowned musical instrument and foreign conservatories begun to teach morin khuur professionally.

The concert is a part of "The 1st Morin Khuur Festival in the USA", two-day festival which is held and organized here in Ann Arbor by University of Michigan's Mongolian Cultural Organization. The concert will be performed by professional morin khuur players and they aim to bring you the most popular pieces of famous Mongolian composers that have been touching people's hearts.

UMMA Pop Up: Andrew Brown Guitar Duo: Jazz Manouche (April 14, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63025 63025-15536919@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 14, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Andrew Brown's Djangophonique is a musical project that performs Jazz Manouche and Hot Swing inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France.    Born in a sandstone victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Since 2016, the FTVM 236 course at the University of Michigan has used audiovisual essay assignments on as large a scale as at any other institution in the world. More than one hundred students who enrolled in FTVM 236 during the winter 2019 term created a series of audiovisual essays as part of their work for the course. This final event showcases the hard work, critical acumen, and creativity that went into their final capstone projects, in which each student made an original critical argument in audiovisual form about a selected film or television episode that was studied in the course. Winners in a number of categories will be selected by a vote of the enrolled students in attendance.
Join us for this celebration of outstanding undergraduate work!

As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter, and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts.

Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Warren & Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and standards from many genres they have arranged in a personal style, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass, while Grant Flick plays violin, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS), a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.

After discovering their shared musical interests, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including The Leafless and Westbound Situation, both comprised of former AMS participants. Jacob and Grant attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, where they spend much of their time arranging, composing and performing together. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give them a unique and compelling musical narrative. Find them on Facebook.
