Warren & Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and standards from many genres they have arranged in a personal style, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass, while Grant Flick plays violin, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS), a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.

After discovering their shared musical interests, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including The Leafless and Westbound Situation, both comprised of former AMS participants. Jacob and Grant attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, where they spend much of their time arranging, composing and performing together. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give them a unique and compelling musical narrative. Find them on Facebook.

UMMA and the Ann Arbor Summer Festival (A2SF) welcome artist Mary Mattingly to Ann Arbor for a three-day residency, June 27–30. Mattingly, whose photograph, Life of Objects, is featured in UMMA’s exhibition The World to Come: Art in the Age of the Anthropocene, is deeply concerned with our relationships to objects—where they come from, where they go, their implications for humans, and their impact on the environment. The centerpiece of the residency is a large-scale public art project titled Objects in the Round, in the Annex tent at Top of the Park on Ingalls Mall where festivalgoers will build a miniature landscape with Mattingly that explores relationships with objects, built landscapes, and habits of consumption.   To kick off her residency, Mattingly will be joined by thought leaders from U-M and beyond—A2SF's James Carter, UMMA curator Jennifer Friess, arts curator of the U-M Institute for the Humanities Amanda Krugliak, watershed planner of the Huron River Watershed Council Daniel Brown, Detroit-based interdisciplinary artist Sacramento Knoxx, independent film director and producer Diane Cheklich, and Christy Bieber, co-director of The Aadizookaan—for a discussion on the possibilities and challenges for artists and arts organizations creating and presenting artwork that explores sustainability and the environment. The Long Table format was born from director and scholar Lois Weaver’s exercise on participation and public engagement. Its aim is to foster civic-minded discussions on ideas and questions surrounding the city's creative culture. It’s a dinner table atmosphere encouraging participants to ask questions, make statements, leave comments, or openly sit, listen, and watch.

Mary Mattingly’s residency is presented in partnership with the Ann Arbor Summer Festival’s Festival Footprint Initiative established with generous support from  Toyota.

Artist Mary Mattingly is deeply concerned with our relationships to objects—where they come from, where they go, their implications for humans, and their impact on the environment. Mattingly asks us to consider how consumerist societies enact histories of exploitation in the creation of objects by mapping complex supply chains from mineral mines to store shelves.

Returning to Michigan after a 2016 residency and exhibition at the U-M Institute for Humanities, during which she travelled to the Upper Peninsula’s cobalt mines, engaged U-M students (including UMMA’s Student Engagement Council) in tracing source materials, and surfaced stories to create a time capsule, Mattingly will share how Michigan continues to inform her work. Mattingly’s photograph, Life of Objects, is on view in UMMA’s presentation of the exhibition The World to Come: Art in the Age of the Anthropocene (April 27–July 28, 2019), which explores the impact of human activity on our planet through art. Join Mattingly, along with Jennifer M. Friess, UMMA Assistant Curator of Photography, and Amanda Krugliak, Arts Curator at the U-M Institute for the Humanities for a look in the gallery, followed by a discussion of the complex terrain Mattingly’s artistic practice explores.

Immediately following this UMMA program, Mattingly and the public will disassemble the project from 5–8 p.m. Stop by the Institute for the Humanities, 202 S. Thayer, to see the time capsule from Mattingly’s 2016 residency on your way to Top of the Park.

This program is part of a 3-day, June 27–30, residency with the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and UMMA during which Mattingly will lead a large-scale public art project, titled Objects in the Round, in the Annex tent at Top of the Park on Ingalls Mall. Andrew Brown's Djangophonique is a musical project that performs Jazz Manouche and Hot Swing inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France.    Born in a sandstone Victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically, in the style of Django.

On October 1st, 2019, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night will be the first film to launch our Muslim Horror Film Festival: Halaloween.

This film festival aims to explore a couple of questions: What scares Muslim audiences? How do horror movies conceived for a Muslim public transform the familiar tropes that Hollywood and Hammer horror taught us? How do Muslim directors of horror movies use the genre to ask probing questions about gender and family tensions, social injustice and political oppression, demographic change and social unrest? Are horror movies halal (permissible in Islamic law)? Why so many jinn - and where are the Muslim zombies?

Join us at 9:00 PM at the Michigan Theater on October 1st, and every Tuesday of October for a free screening of a Muslim horror film. All Screenings are free, open to the public, and will include English subtitles. Screenings are first come-first served. For more information on our festival, why we're running it, and the other films we are screening, please visit: ii.umich.edu/islamicstudies/news-events/events/films.html

Film Description:

October 1: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (dir. Ana Lily Amirpour; USA, 2015): This film festival favorite was shot in Persian in the San Joaquin Valley, in brooding and beautiful black & white. It is often (accurately) described as a Western-vampire-noir. Gender revenge themes and mild violence. In Persian with English subtitles.

Film Description:
October 8: Ritual (dir. Joko Anwar; Indonesia, 2012): A master class in cinematography and editing for horror movies. The first half of the movie is essentially silent, as the protagonist regains consciousness in a shallow grave, learns the gruesome fate of his wife, and flees an unknown enemy through the pristine Indonesian forest. Who is he? What is the meaning of the mysterious and violent ritual he seems doomed to repeat? The ending only doubles down on the mystery; this is Lost for horror fans, but taut, beautifully paced, gorgeous and well-acted. The violence is horrific, but mostly off-screen. Fridged women; fridged families; sinister home movies. Smile for the camera! In English.

Film Description:
October 15: Siccin 4 (dir. Alper Mesci; Turkey, 2017): The fourth installment in the Turkish jinn possession franchise, and the horror movie equivalent of sketch comedy. Don’t come to this movie for character development or thoughtful statements about Turkish politics or culture. For true horror fans, it’s a treat. Body horror, jump scares, a Dark Shadows vibe with a Dario Argento aesthetic, evil children and evil old people in a creepy, fantastically decorated old house. In Turkish with English subtitles.

U-M Native American Studies Presents: Against Hungry Listening with Dylan Robinson (October 17, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68115 68115-17011955@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 17, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

How are settler colonial and Indigenous listening practices different? How can listening be extractive, a way to access and use Indigenous resources? What are alternative listening practices that connect listener and song-life rather than make a distinction between them? This presentation provides an overview of forms of extractive or “hungry” perception, and alternatives to these that emerge from Indigenous sensory engagement.

Dylan Robinson is a xwélméxw artist and writer (Stó:lō Nation, Sqwa), and the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts at Queen’s University. His current work focuses on the re-connection of Indigenous songs with communities who were prohibited by law to sing them as part of Canada’s Indian Act from 1882-1951. Robinson’s previous publications include the edited volumes Music and Modernity Among Indigenous Peoples of North America (2018); Arts of Engagement: Taking Aesthetic Action in and Beyond the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2016); and Opera Indigene (2011). His monograph, Hungry Listening, is forthcoming with Minnesota University Press in early 2020. Additionally, Robinson is curator of the Ka’tarohkwi Festival of Indigenous Arts in Kingston, and along with Candice Hopkins, is curator of the internationally touring exhibition Soundings featuring “scores for decolonial action” by Indigenous artists.

This program is organized by the U-M Department of Native American Studies and co-sponsored by the Department of American Culture, History of Art, the Humanities Collaboratory, Multi Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), and the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

Dia De La Muertos (November 1, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68327 68327-17046007@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 1, 2019 5:30pm
Location: School of Public Health Bldg I and Crossroads and Tower
Organized By: MENA ( Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Born in a sandstone victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in Swing music, he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly practicing and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

EVERYONE’S INVITED.

Culture. Music. Festivities. Tea. Food. Dance.

Grab your cultural clothes, grab your friends, and join cultural Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Pakistani, Persian, Syrian, and Yemeni student organizations for a night of cultural celebration and empowerment. A chance for our diverse cultures - Desi, Non-Desi, Middle-Eastern, Non-Middle Eastern - to unite over a common struggle.

What all ten of these countries share are serious sanitation issues. Many have suffered as a result of these unsafe conditions, and unfortunately, media has portrayed them as victims from political warfare rather than human beings with rich, deep cultural ties and appreciation for their country. As a way to honor and showcase this love for the countries, Paani is bringing together everyone together to rediscover their cultural roots!

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 (February 2, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71700 71700-17868607@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, February 2, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past 10 years, the Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA) has come together to prepare for one special night every year: the Malaysian Cultural Night.
Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. This year, we present Kita.

Kita (Us)

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

Born in a sandstone Victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in Swing music, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates per year. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django

As one of America’s most performed composers, David Lang has “solidified his standing as an American master,” as The New Yorker puts it. His catalog of work is extensive, and his opera, orchestra, chamber, and solo works are by turns ominous, ethereal, urgent, hypnotic, unsettling, and emotionally direct. In 2008, the New York-based composer was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion, a score for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers, based on the children’s story by Hans Christian Andersen. Additionally, Lang’s score for Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, among others. Other recent work includes man made, a concerto co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony; the loser, an opera based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard, which opened the 2016 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; and prisoner of the state, an opera co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, De Doelen concert hall in the Netherlands, the Barbican Centre in London, l’Auditori concert hall in Barcelona, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Germany, the Concertgebouw in Belgium, and Malmö Opera in Sweden. Lang is co-founder and co-artistic director of Bang on a Can, a New York-based organization dedicated to the support of experimental music.

David Lang’s appearance is courtesy of the William Bolcom Guest Residency at the U-M School of Music, Theater, and Dance, with additional support from the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Writing in her own genre, Karissa Bone introduces music with the bop-factor of Pop, the soul of R&B, and the unexpected element of pinpointed introspective lyrics. Hailing from Saginaw, MI, her style is influenced by Motown, Classic Rock, and everything in life that goes sideways. Her airy, yet powerful voice melts together with her soul-twisting lyrics to make every song a memorable journey. Whether she’s with a full band, string section, at a grand piano, or playing solo with her electric guitar, Bone’s live shows are full of energy and belonging. With short comedic breaks, she seamlessly covers topics from heartbreak to nostalgia, to the modern age of technology. Her artistry truly shows through– when she sings, you stop and listen.

In 2019, while studying at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Bone paid her dues in Ann Arbor, where she's performed at the famed Blind Pig, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and the Canterbury House. She currently studies songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

You can find her on Instagram @itskarissabone

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The Ann Arbor Film Festival returns for its 58th year March 24 - 29, 2020.  Thousands of influential filmmakers and artists have showcased work at the AAFF, including Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Gus Van Sant, Barbara Hammer, Lawrence Kasdan, Devo, and George Lucas. The longest-running avant-garde and experimental film festival in North America, it presents films of all lengths and genres, including experimental, animation, documentary, fiction, and performance-based works. The festival serves as one of a handful of Academy Award®-qualifying festivals in the United States.    This year, the AAFF is featuring a Music Videos in Competition program. These contemporary music videos include beard-based lifeforms, an unexpected visitor, a journey forward, a setar player, a future so remote it looks like the past, an exorcism attempt, power dynamics and sexual abuse, a Jungian alternate universe wormhole, another dimension, mesmerizing voices, disturbing arte-facts brought to light, a blackhole, and a haunted car ride with Kim Gordon.

This program is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

New York based artist Abigail DeVille creates immersive works and installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem. With family roots spanning back at least two generations, DeVille’s work about New York City is both personal and political. Acting as an archaeologist, DeVille collects and reallocates found materials to give physical presence to unspoken stories and forgotten pasts. Her work often focuses around themes of displacement, migration, marginalization, and cultural invisibility. As an extension of her installation practice, DeVille also designs sets for theatrical productions, including the Stratford Festival and Harlem Stage. Her work is part of some of the most prestigious collections in the world and has been exhibited internationally, including the Institute of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles); The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York); the Pinchuk Art Centre (Kiev); New Museum (New York); and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).  An honors fellow at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, a Creative Capital grantee, and an OBIE Award for Design recipient, DeVille is currently in residence at the American Academy in Rome.

Co-presented with the Institute for Humanities, presenting No Space Hidden (Under Heaven), an exhibition of work by Abigail DeVille, on view at the IH Gallery April 1-May 7, 2020. There will be an exhibition reception at the IH Gallery following this event.
