The New Red Order (NRO) is a mutable collective, a “public secret society,” facilitated by three core contributors — brothers Zack and Adam Khalil, who are Ojibway and grew up in northern Michigan, and Jackson Polys, who is Tlingit from Alaska. The collective creates video and performance works that question the desire for indigeneity in dominant culture. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants, the NRO co-produces video, performance, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth and agency. Their individual and collaborative work has been presented at the Alaska State Museum, Anchorage Museum, Berlinale, LACMA, Museum of Modern Art, Sundance Film Festival, Tate Modern, Toronto Biennial of Art, Walker Art Center, and Whitney Biennial 2019.

This speaker series event includes the screening of two films presented by the artists.

Never Settle: Calling In is a short recruitment video for New Red Order, a public-secret society that simultaneously satirizes and sincerely engages with efforts for solidarity and the desire for Indigenous epistemologies. Delving into the stakes of accompliceship, the video examines dynamic conditions in which the concerns of Indigenous people can be treated as a topic du jour, then co-opted. This video is part of an ambitious, multi-part project that includes a public recruitment campaign and participatory installations that invite prospective recruits to undergo an initiation. Playing with the notion of headhunting, NRO seeks to enlist candidates in their public secret-society, thereby investigating shame and the desire for indigeneity. Never Settle poses the question of how to channel what might be seen as inappropriate urges to merge with indigeneity into paths for the expansion of Indigenous growth and agency.

Adam and Zack Khalil’s debut film INAATE/SE/ [it shines a certain way. to a certain place/it flies. falls./] re-imagines an Anishinaabe story, the Seven Fires Prophecy, which both predates and predicts first contact with Europeans. A kaleidoscopic experience blending documentary, narrative, and experimental forms, INAATE/SE/ explores how the prophecy resonates through the generations in their indigenous community on the Michigan/Canadian border. With acute geographic specificity, and grand historical scope, the film fixes its lens between the sacred and the profane to pry open the construction of contemporary indigenous identity.

Philippa P.B. Hughes is a social sculptor and creative strategist who produces art-fueled projects that spark humanizing and authentic conversations across political, social, and cultural divides. She is an evangelist for dismantling the polarization industrial complex, one conversation at a time. Hughes has designed and produced hundreds of creative activations since 2007 for curious folks to engage with art and one another in unconventional and meaningful ways. She leads CuriosityConnects.us, a partner in Looking For America, a national series inviting politically diverse guests to break bread and talk to each other face-to-face using art as a starting point for relationship-building conversations. Hughes has engineered numerous public-private collaborations that have been funded by the Kresge Foundation, New American Economy, Center for Inclusion & Belonging, and the DC Office of Planning. She has served as a commissioner on the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities among numerous other boards throughout Washington, D.C., where she is based. Hughes has spoken at TEDxAmericanUniversity, Creative Placemaking Week 2018 in Amsterdam, Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit, TomTom Festival, Smart Growth America’s Intersections. Her work has been featured by CNN, PBS Newshour, CityLab, and The Washington Post, among numerous other media outlets. Her formal training took place at the University of Virginia, which launched her into a six-year legal career that ended with the Washington City Paper declaring 2007 “The Year of Philippa.” Deep curiosity about the world and the people in it provided the education that mattered most.

Ayana Evans will talk about her trajectory of her work, including her new work of performance art for video "You Better Be Good to Me” (with performances by students from SMTD, the UM Cheer Team, and Detroit artists, and costumes by Dressing Up and Down students). "You Better Be Good to Me” will premiere as part of the program.

Ayana Evans is a NYC based performance artist who grew up on the south side of Chicago. The sensibilities of both locations heavily influence her work with the body, race relations, and gender bias.  Roberta Fallon, co-founder of Artblog, describes Ms. Evans as, “one part Wonder Woman, one part agent provocateur.” And writer Seph Rodney of Hyperallergic and the New York Times wrote: “I have seen [this] artist actually stop traffic on the Bowery in downtown Manhattan in 2016, where, in a floor-length lace gown, a dollar-store tiara and full makeup, she placed a chair in the street to do chair dips.”

Evans began her career as a painter earning her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. During the summer of 2016 Evans completed her installment of the residency, "Back in Five Minutes" at El Museo Del Barrio in NYC. The next year she completed a endurance-based 10-hour, citywide performance and 100-person performative dinner party at the Barnes Foundation in 2017 for "A Person of the Crowd,” a major performance art survey featuring artists such as, Marina Abramovic, Tania Bruguera, and William Pope L. in Philadelphia, PA. Her international work includes participation in: FIAP performance festival in Martinique, The Pineapple Show at Tiwani Contemporary in London, and Ghana's Chale Wote festival, which drew 30,000 people. Evans has received numerous fellowships and awards including: Studio Immersion Fellowship Program at EFA’s Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (2018); Artists Alliance Inc (2018); Franklin Furnace Fund for performance art (2017-2018); New York Foundation of the Arts Fellow for Interdisciplinary Arts (2018); and an artist in resident for Art on the Vine at Martha's Vineyard (2019). In addition to her numerous guerilla street performances, Evans has performed at the Queens Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, Newark Museum, and the Bronx Museum. During 2018 and 2019 Evans had three solo exhibitions with Medium Tings Gallery (Brooklyn), Cuchifritos Gallery (NYC) and the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop with New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) at Governors Island, NY. She has been featured in The New York Times, Bomb Magazine, ArtNet, The Cut, Hyperallergic, and CNN. Evans is currently an adjunct professor at Brown University.

During the Fall 2020 semester, Evans created a new work of performance art for video as part of the Stamps School’s Witt Visiting Artist program. A video of the performance "You Better Be Good to Me,” will premiere as part of the program.

*I am America too.* With these powerful words, Afro-American poet Langston Hughes expressed the right of coloured people to be an equal part of American culture and society. As a member of the »Harlem Renaissance«, a dynamic movement initiated by Afro-American artists in the 1920s, Hughes became a true classic. With his deeply humanistic attitude, his intellect, sense of humour and incorruptible integrity, he produced works that remain timeless and touching to this day. The concert programme *Langston Hughes: Singing Harlem in Europe* features musical settings of his texts by composers like Wilhelm Grosz, Florence Price and Leonard Bernstein, showing that humanity and truthfulness know no bounds – neither then, nor now.

»I know why the caged bird sings« – it sings of freedom in order not to lose hope. It sings in order to feel the life beyond the bars of its cage. To encourage itself and others. And this is how American composers and authors with African roots sing and write to this day: their subject matter is discrimination and injustice, pride and dignity – but love and separation as well, mourning and joy, belief and hope.

In the second part of the Celebration of Black Music, several generations of these artists have their say: from Florence Price and William Grant Still to Tyshawn Sorey and B. E. Boykin. The concert presents a many-voiced panorama of black music in its countless and fascinating facets.

This summer, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and UMMA present 600 Highwaymen’s A THOUSAND WAYS, a new, multi-part work that offers enthralling social interactions that deliver us from isolation and toward togetherness.

A Thousand Ways is a three-part performance in which you are the actor and you are the audience. Your words, actions, gestures, silence, thoughts, and willingness are the tools. You need no training. You are the expert.

Obie Award-winning theater makers, 600 HIGHWAYMEN, known for exhilarating performances that challenge the very definition of theater, have created a quietly radical response to this new world with A Thousand Ways. It is a chance at being heard, a brave moment to show up.

This is an invitation. Will you attend?

Part One: A Phone Call – On a simple phone call, you and another audience member – nameless strangers to one another – follow a carefully crafted set of directives. Over the course of the journey, a portrait of each other emerges through fleeting moments of exposure and the simple sound of an unseen voice.
