Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

The Deutschtisch for Spring 2017 is associated with German 100, but all are welcome! The group will meet Mondays and Wednesdays 12:15-1:00. You can find the group with your ears (i.e. listen for a group of people speaking German). Look for the group at Beanster's Cafe on the ground floor of the Michigan League (typically the group will meet here) OR occasionally on Mondays with good weather, in the "Courtyard Garden" of the League, across from UHS (one way to get to it would be to go directly through the League from the front doors (facing the Bell Tower) to the back doors). ALTERNATIVELY, you can come to the end of the morning class session at 12:00 in Room 2106 MLB and then walk to lunch with the group.

There will always be at least one instructor present; in the first half of the Summer semester, that will be Shubhangi Dabak or Julie Gruber.

All interested German speakers are welcome!

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia. How does an American academic culture of expression interact with the increasingly international body of authors on campus? And, can non-normative writing paradigms find footing in American academia? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Samer Ali (Near Eastern Studies)
Miranda Brown (Asian Languages & Cultures)

Kunqu Singers and their Performance of Ci Songs (September 20, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44747 44747-9969054@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 20, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

~Presented in Chinese with English translation~

Despite that ci songs from Song Dynasty of China (960-1279) are mostly enjoyed as poetry nowadays, they were sung as songs when the genre first emerged. The Song dynasty tradition of singing ci songs is now lost, but since mid-Qing, there is a tradition of avocational performers singing ci songs with kunqu or operatic vocal styles. This lecture introduces this performance tradition by clarifying differences between commercial performers (xigong) and non-commercial performers (qinggong) in the context of their artistic preferences, social functions, and repertories.

Professor Zhou Qin is a professor at Suzhou University, as well as the associate director of the Kunqu Research Center of China, the associate director of the Chinese Association of Kunqu and Gunqin Research, and a researcher at the Research Center of Jiangsu History and Culture. He was the principal coach for traditional singing and chanting practices for Peony Pavilion, the Young Lover’s Edition (2004). Currently, he hosts and teaches Kunqu yishu (The Art of Kunqu), a nation-wide online course in China. Devoted to promoting kunqu domestically and internationally, Professor Zhou has extensively toured China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, France, Japan, and the US. In 2004, the Suzhou municipal government awarded him a prize to acknowledge his efforts of preserving kunqu. In 2009, the Cultural Ministry honored him as a distinguished researcher on kunqu theory and history. Professor Zhou has published Cunxin shuwu qupu (Annotated Anthology of Kunqu Aria from the Cunxin Studio), Suzhou kunqu (Kunqu in Suzhou), Kunxi jicun (A Collection of Preserved Kunqu Scripts), and Fengying wunong (Five Kunqu Scripts).

During the Depression, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) dispatched writers to sample the fare at group eating events like church dinners, political barbecues, and clambakes. Its America Eats project sought nothing less than to sample, and report upon, the tremendous range of foods eaten across the United States.
Dr. Camille Bégin shapes a cultural and sensory history of New Deal-era eating from the FWP archives, describing in mouth-watering detail how Americans tasted their food. Bégin explores how likes and dislikes, cravings and disgust operated within local sensory economies that she culls from the FWP's vivid descriptions, visual cues, culinary expectations, recipes and accounts of restaurant meals. She also illustrates how nostalgia, prescriptive gender ideals, and racial stereotypes shaped how the FWP was able to frame regional food cultures as "American."

Please join us for the opening reception of Professor Endi Poskovic’s art exhibition and his informal art talk.

The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation, multiplicity, seriality. Through his works, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement, exile, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China, Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan, CIUM presents this exhibition.

Endi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia, Norway, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the United States Fulbright Commission, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Norwegian Government, the Camargo Foundation, the Flemish Ministry of Culture, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Jincheon Art Museum, South Korea and others.

Vestiges of Snake Cults: The Banana Python and His Sons (September 27, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44784 44784-9980556@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 27, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

Snake cults, which were probably once prevalent among the indigenes of southern China, have all but disappeared through the subjugation of snake deities (a.k.a. demons) by Buddhist monks, Daoist priests and Shamanistic local deities. While most snake deities exist as defeated demons/demonesses in religious lore, their power continues to be harnessed in some religious rituals and recognized in remote regions of Fujian. The Banana Python God and his three sons are a prominent example of their survival in transformed incarnations. In her presentation, Dr. Fan Pen Chen of SUNY-Albany, will share photos of temple murals as well as video recordings of string-puppet performances that depict the sacred tale of these snake gods.

Dr. Fan Pen Chen is Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at SUNY-Albany. She is the author of Chinese Shadow Theater: History, Popular Religion, and Women Warriors; Visions for the Masses: Chinese Shadow Plays from Shaanxi and Shanxi; Marionette Plays from Northern China; Journey of a Goddess: Chen Jinggu Subdues White Snake (forthcoming); and dozens of articles on Chinese drama, fiction, puppetry, and folk religion.

Climate Blue welcomes you to experience the breathtaking Netflix documentary, Chasing Coral. Please join us for the film, free food, and a post-film discussion that will surely be worthwhile. Also before the screening stars we will discuss a coral reef conservation opportunity sponsored by the organization, GIVE.

Film Description: Chasing Coral taps into the collective will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record bleaching events as they happen. Unfortunately, the effort is anything but simple, and the team doggedly battles technical malfunctions and the forces of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic transformation below the waves. With its breathtaking photography, nail-biting suspense, and startling emotion, Chasing Coral is a dramatic revelation that won’t have audiences sitting idle for long.

Two mega-stars Deng Chao and Eddie Peng were starred in this dramedy. Some fateful events allow him to experience his father’s life in the past.

Sponsored by the Confucius Institute and Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at U-M, "Electric Shadows: 2017 Contemporary Chinese Film Series" will feature six exciting Chinese films released in recent years.

Chinese Food and Female Characters in Late Imperial Chinese Novels (October 11, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/45549 45549-10228905@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 11, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

This lecture presents an examination of how food is used for the portrayal of female characters in two important works of the late Imperial Chinese vernacular novel: Jin Ping Mei 金瓶梅 (The Plum in the Golden Vase, 16th Century) and Ernü yingxiong zhuan兒女英雄傳 (A Tale of Lovers and Heroes, 19th century). The former is famous for its verisimilitude in presenting the domestic life of women in a wealthy merchant household, and the latter features an independent and valiant swordswoman who eventually agrees to marry into a Manchu gentry family. Critical discussions about food in relation to women in Chinese fictional narratives often focus on two aspects: food as a supplement or counterpart for sex, and food as a medium for social transactions. This lecture provides a close reading of several passages from the two novels where neither sexuality nor social transactions are a major concern. Instead, the reading focuses on how details about food and dining provide alternative means for depicting the female characters’ personalities and their inner thoughts in the fast-paced and plot-driven narratives. This discussion about the literary functions of food also touches on related subjects such as the stylistic features of vernacular storytelling and the food culture in late imperial China.

Yan Liang is an associate professor of Chinese language and literature at Grand Valley State University. She received her PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2008. Her research interests include late imperial Chinese literature, vernacular fiction and storytelling, Chinese food culture, and Chinese popular culture. Her recent publications include studies about the literary functions of food descriptions in late imperial Chinese vernacular novels and the eighteenth-century poet and gourmet Yuan Mei (1716-1798).

The Amazing Molihua: Culture and Meaning of China’s Most Well-known Folksong (October 25, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/45890 45890-10321770@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 25, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

Internationally known as “Jasmine,” the song molihua was an East-China folksong of humble beginning. Like many regional folksongs in China whose origins were mostly unknown, molihua exists throughout the region in numerous versions. The molihua that most people know today was collected and documented by British diplomats George MaCartney and John Barrow presented in his book Travel in China in late 18th century. Puccini’s incorporation of it in his opera Turandot in 1924, further consolidated the tune’s global reputation. Since then, molihua has emerged as the most well-known Chinese musical and cultural icon at home and abroad. This presentation traces the brief history of molihua and describes the different ways that it was being utilized. Dr. Lau argues hat the shifting meaning of molihua is predicated on what molihua represents against the ever-changing economic and political context of China since the new millennium.

The path to success is seldom smooth nor clear, populated by busy people and opaque processes. Alas, here is a forum for graduate students to hear from their senior colleagues about challenges in their academic journeys and how they overcame them. We asked an interdisciplinary group of these busy people to devote two hours of their time to answering your questions. Join us to gain insight from their hindsight!

Edible fare and refreshments to be served!
