The prints works in this exhibition are based on extracted imagery from photographs taken around various locales within the past few years, using inanimate forms to allude to issues of safety, comfort and population control. These images include objects designed to modify the ways we navigate or control our environment and include barriers, traffic cones, highway signage all in states of disrepair, disuse, or dysfunction.

Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Semester in Detroit

What is Semester in Detroit?
Twice each year, Semester in Detroit brings a new student cohort to live, learn, work and engage in the city. Fall semester runs from September through December, and spring/summer semester runs from May through July. Applications for the spring and fall semesters are accepted on a rolling basis, but final deadlines are detailed on the Applying to SID page.

Through an intensive urban studies curriculum that explores 20th century Detroit history, urban planning, the non-profit sector, creative writing, and more, students learn about the city in a comprehensive way that isn’t available through single course offerings. As an experiential program, the classes are not the only way students learn of the city - yet they provide vital tools and insight to take with students through their own experiences in Detroit.

Want to learn more?
Please join us for our mass interest meeting on September 24 5-6PM in the East Quad Greene Lounge, if you want to learn more about the program❗❗❗We can talk to you about Scholarships, Housing, Application, and Credits!
Food and drinks will be provided! 🍕🍕

AMAS Lecture: As Black Muslim as Bean Pie: Food, Faith, and Nationhood in African American Islam (September 25, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54303 54303-13565725@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 25, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Arab and Muslim American Studies (AMAS)

*Bean pie will be served!*

If American national identity can be signified by apple pie, then African American Muslim identity can be signified by navy bean pie. Developed in the early 20th century by members of the Nation of Islam (NOI), the bean pie has achieved iconic status in Black urban communities as a tasty dessert associated closely with African American Muslims (in and out of the NOI) who produce and distribute it. As a signature dish, the pie is much more than an edible treat—baked into the pie are communities’ spiritual commitments, political ideologies, cultural discourses, and economic programs. Drawing on oral histories and archival sources, this presentation will examine what the navy bean pie and food practices of African American Muslims can tell us about their faith, politics, and culture.

Zaheer Ali is the Oral Historian at Brooklyn Historical Society, where he currently directs Muslims in Brooklyn, a public history and arts project designed to amplify the stories of Brooklyn’s Muslim communities and contextualize those stories in the broader histories of Brooklyn, New York City, and the United States. His work on the project was recently featured in a now viral video on the Muslim bean pie for Slate.com’s Who’s Afraid of Aymann Ismail? that has been viewed over 4 million times on Facebook, with over 50,000 shares. He also co-hosts and co-produces Flatbush + Main, Brooklyn Historical Society’s award-winning monthly podcast, now in its third year of exploring Brooklyn’s past and present through scholarly discussions, historical archives, and oral histories. Formerly, he served as Project Manager of Columbia University’s Malcolm X Project under the direction of the late Manning Marable, and served as a lead researcher for Marable’s Pulitzer Prize winning biography, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention (2011). In addition to Brooklyn, Muslims in America, and Malcolm X, his scholarly interests include 20th century United States history, the Black freedom movement, and Prince Rogers Nelson—topics explored in courses he has taught as an adjunct lecturer at New York University.

Lost in Translation: The Architecture and/of Chinese Edition (October 3, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55224 55224-13700533@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 3, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

This event is organized by GRIN with generous support from Rackham and in partnership with Taubman College DEI.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

Brian Holton will speak about his own odyssey in translation, from the Latin and Greek proses of his schooldays, to the near-impossibility of earning a living through literary translation. He will propose the following questions: When we read a poem in translation, whose voice do we hear? Do translators think other people’s thoughts? Is translation useful for an apprentice writer? He will stress the importance of praxis in generating theory, and briefly discuss his own practice as a Chinese-Scots translator. Lastly, he will explore the tools which make a poem sing in its new habitat.

Brian Holton was born in Scotland and educated at Edinburgh and Durham. Holton taught classical and modern Chinese language and literature in the UK, and Chinese-English translation in Hong Kong. He has translated a dozen books of poetry by Yang Lian and has appeared at major literary festivals in the UK, Europe and the Far East. He has published a wide range of Chinese poetry and fiction in Scots and English.

Time: 11:30am-1:00pm
Special Guest: Ruby Sales–Building a Vibrant Youth Culture at 6:30pm in the new Taubman College Commons.
Light refreshments will be served.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales has made the struggle for racial justice one of the centerpieces of her work through the SpiritHouse Project. Recognizing a need to nurture the hope that still resides in young people as well as to revive an intergenerational community and human compassion, in 2016 the SpiritHouse Project introduced Hope Zones.™ They are alternative learning spaces designed to strengthen the hope, courage, reason, and will of young people to individually and collectively stand up for themselves with dignity, clarity and nonviolent persistence. According to the Harvard Gazette, Ruby spoke about the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and shared, “Even in the face of challenges, there are reasons for hope. Freedom must be seen as a constant struggle. We don’t have to give in to despair.”

Envisioned as an event that meets the need for LGBTQ spaces and visibility, the LGBTQ monologues is a platform for all of our stories to be heard. Last year the event enabled twelve students to share a personal portrait of queer and trans life at the university in front of an audience of 150 people.

This year our goal in celebrating the 2nd annual student performances, is to build partnerships with the local community and student organizations - to accurately represent the LGBTQ population on campus and the width of experiences students faced. The theme this year is "More Pride. More Color". We recognize that it is critical that the intersecting identities within the LGBTQ community are accurately represented and are given the equal opportunity to be heard.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic

We are excited to announce the EGS & TBP Student Speaker Series organized by Tau Beta Pi and Engineering Graduate Symposium for the College of Engineering, a professional development event for EGS presenters to practice their presentation skills.

Training (for) Better Presentations is aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills, so they can learn to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience. It also aims to engage a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering.

Intended as "teaching through practice" event, each session is structured to have EGS student speakers make a timed presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel. Expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

We will host two events, both 6-8 pm, at 1303 EECS (10/15) and 1005 DOW (10/18) respectively. Food will be provided!

Not Separate from the Street: Nancy Blum and Public Art Installation (October 19, 2018 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54327 54327-13572279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 19, 2018 4:30pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

The Robertson Lecture is an endowed annual event of the LSA Residential College, and is a lasting gift of the first Dean of the RC, James Robertson. The lecturer is traditionally a notable alumna/us of the RC, someone impacting their chosen field(s) in ways congruent with the philosophy of the College. The 2018 Robertson Lecture will be delivered at the Keene Theater in East Quadrangle on October 19th by Nancy Blum, class of '85, a Brooklyn-based artist who is known for her public art commissions and works on paper. In addition to graduating from the RC with majors in Psychology and Women’s Studies, she received an MSW from the U-M School of Social work and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her current work is installed primarily out of the gallery, not separated from the street but integrated into it, with a particular interest in sites of transit in cities and within hospital settings. Her recent commissions include medicinal wildflower windows at the San Francisco General Hospital acute care unit; large, graceful birds in flights of migration/immigration integrated into three light-rail stations in Minneapolis/St. Paul; and over-sized yellow flower sculptures sprouting from a rainwater filtration green space at a bus loop outside Philadelphia.

In her Robertson lecture, Nancy will share anecdotes about these and other works, and take us behind the scenes of her in-progress installation at an MTA train station in NYC. She'll explore how her multiple interests take root in public art, and she'll give us a sense for how she forged her own path as an artist - a journey, she says, that began at the Residential College, notably thanks to mentoring from her ceramics professor, Susan Crowell.

Following the Lecture, please join us for a reception for the artist at the RC Art Gallery, located on the first floor of East Quadrangle. Refreshments will be served. An exhibit of Nancy's drawings will be on display at the same gallery through November 9th, (M-F 10am-5pm, free admission).

WATCH THIS LECTURE from your internet browser during its simulcast, 10/19 from 4:30-5:30pm EST at the link below.

Organized By: Residential College

Join us for the opening reception for the exhibit described below. Refreshments will be served, and Nancy will be on site to enjoy conversation with you.

RC alumna '85 Nancy Blum returns to East Quad to exhibit her drawings of flowers and to deliver the 10/19 Robertson Lecture on her public art installations.

Excerpted from her artist statement:
My large‐scale works on paper, rendered in ink, colored pencil, gouache and graphite, portray a fantastic realm in which flowers own the space. I use a variety of 16th and 17th-century botanical images, from Chinese plum blossoms to German botanicals, as starting points for each drawing. Rather than alluding to an actual landscape, I instead combine species of plants in the same drawing that would not customarily exist together in nature. Obsessive handwork creates intricate layers of visual information to be discovered over time and, in this way, the works become a seductive meditation for the viewer.

I use botanical motifs to create images that are universally associated with growth and continuity. My deeper intent is to conjure the ‘flower’ as an active, forceful agent, subverting a culturally conditioned point of view that often deems the ephemeral and the organic as less powerful and of limited value. My ‘wonderland’ presents a view of life that pulses with expansive fecundity; hopefully, it also propels comprehension of the connectedness of all beings within the limitless energy operating throughout this world.

Everyone thinks they know what digital means. So pervasive are digital technologies in the 21st century that it is difficult to find critical distance from this immersive new world of ubiquitous connectivity, social media feeds, smartphones, mobile apps, responsive design, algorithmic recommendation systems, and voice-controlled home shopping assistants. While the question “what is the digital?” is compelling, the more pressing question might be instead: what does it mean to be alive in the digital age?

The 2019 Michigan Meetings will be a year-long event that critically engages with the big issues, urgent consequences, and radical possibilities for grappling with the meaning of life in this era of digital ubiquity. Whether defined as “animated corporeal existence,” “vitality,” or “to continue, to remain,” we see a profound opportunity to approach the digital world through a spectrum of the meaning of life-ness - alive, liveness, animated, lifelike, life-adjacent, consciousness, awareness, attention, awoke.

Digital culture reconfigures the way we know our bodies, our selves, our work, our objects and living spaces, our politics, and our sense of community. Like prior technologies, the digital gives rise to distinct new modes of experiencing time and space. Life is lived through constant network connectivity, GPS positioning, software databases, biotechnologies and wearable activity trackers, ‘smart’ buildings, cities, and homes, migrant digital labor, computational modeling, and the management of unfathomable streams of big data, and artificial intelligence. Subsequently, life is also lived through anxieties about identity theft, hacking, online harassment, piracy, surveillance and drone warfare.

Across campus, these questions will emerge in courses, colloquia, lectures, and informal conversations among students, faculty, staff, and peers. We aim to support meaningful and rewarding work in the technology industries or in academic research by giving students and faculty the history, critical perspective, and rigorous deep-dive into humanistic questions of “new” media life with this 2019 theme.

Panel Speakers:
Andre Brock, Georgia Tech
Carmen Aguilar y Wedge, HyphenLabs
Lionel Robert, U-M School of Information
Sophia Brueckner, U-M Art and Design

The 2019 Michigan Meeting is co-organized by:

Sarah Murray, University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts associate professor of film, television, and media

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Latina/o Studies

Sponsored by: LAMBDA THETA ALPHA LATIN SORORITY, INC., BETA OMICRON CHAPTER

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico that commemorates the lives of those who have passed. It involves family and friends gathering together to pray for and celebrate the lives of their friends and family members. Traditionally, entire communities gather together to celebrate and create “altares” dedicated to their loved ones. These altars have decorations such as colorful paper, marigolds, candy, and the favorite food or beverages of the person who the altar is dedicated to.

History of Lambda Theta Alpha
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. (LTA) was founded in December of 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey as the first Latina sorority ever created to cater towards the needs of Latinas in higher education. As the Latino migration to the United States increased, so did the emergence of independent Latina women. With this growth, the need for support groups and outreach programs were at an all-time high; this was true for all women and especially for the low percentage of Latina women in higher education. The sorority’s focus is not only to support all women on a college campus but to integrate the organization into the social, political, and community service arena that other members of the Ann Arbor community are involved with. On January 23, 2000, eight Lovely Ladies promoted these values on the University of Michigan campus with the founding of Beta Omicron chapter. This allowed not only independent Latina women, but all Universal Women on campus to feel a sense of belonging and with that, achieve their highest potential. It would define a new role for the Universal woman—one with education, goals and vision in hopes of great success. Through educational and charitable activities, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. strives to accomplish these aspirations.

Roland Snooks explores the complexity of the contemporary social and natural world through the creation of objects, installations, public art and architectural projects. This work draws on an understanding of the underlying processes of formation that give rise to these contemporary conditions. The studio redeploys these processes through algorithmic techniques in the creation of highly detailed and intricate forms. We are a small, agile studio based in Melbourne that operates globally. We have an international network of expert collaborators to enable us to tackle complex and large-scale projects.

Studio Roland Snooks's work has been exhibited internationally and acquired by some of the world’s leading collections of modern art and design, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the FRAC Collection (France). The work has been published widely and is the subject of a forthcoming monograph (ACTAR Publishers - Barcelona). Roland is frequently invited to lecture and present his work internationally at the world’s leading schools of design.

We have a fascination with the impact of new technologies on form. The studio is at the forefront of new computational design processes and robotic fabrication techniques. We are focused on how to develop and leverage these innovations to create intricately crafted forms.

This seminar series is funded by a grant from the U-M Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Innovation Fund and the U-M Robotics Institute.
