Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music, spontaneously, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush, but also fingers, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops, playgrounds, houses and aerial views, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales, but rather to celebrate the color, shape, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving, crochet, needle felting, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years, she has collected, saved, garbage-rescued, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds, the vessels that hold them, and the totems that pay tribute to them, all keep her company, inspire her, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea, Michigan.

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

Read the exhibition press release here.

Parsonsfield is a four-piece alt/folk band from Massachusetts that infuses a rowdy, rock 'n' roll spirit into its bluegrass and folk influences, blowing away any preconception of what you think banjos and mandolins should sound like. They weren't always called Parsonsfield—the band started out as Poor Old Shine. The new name was born of the inspired experiences recording two albums in beautiful, rural Parsonsfield, Maine. "We owe a lot to what happened there," they say. "It pulled us from being a more traditional string band to something that felt much more uniquely ourselves. It made us the band we are today." The joy is palpable when this band takes the stage, and NPR says they make "the most jubilant and danceable indie roots music this side of the Carolinas." They come to the Family Room with a new album, "Happy Hour on the Floor."

Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Over the years, she has collected, saved, garbage-rescued, and gathered objects that capture her attention. Paul Stelben (Yale University) performs a narrative program of music on the 60-bell Lurie Carillon, ranging from the reflective "Earth Blood Reprise" by Ann Arbor composer Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra to Geert D'hollander's virtuosic "Een Schoon Liedeken." Concerts are free and family-friendly. We kindly ask that attendees support physical distancing practices by bringing picnic blankets and lawn chairs and responsibly spacing themselves throughout Gerstacker Grove, and we encourage wearing masks when conversing with people from other households.

PayStation parking is available behind the Walgreen Drama Center (https://ltp.umich.edu/lot/?xyz=fG) and the lots behind the Beyster Building (https://ltp.umich.edu/lot/?xyz=fZ), as well in other North Campus lots.

Paul is also a Carillonneur Member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA), having passed his exam at the 2019 GCNA Congress at Bok Tower Gardens. In addition to the carillon, he plays the bassoon and the piano, and he is the assistant conductor for the Yale Medical Symphony Orchestra. Furthermore, Paul is passionate about serving others and teaches bassoon in the New Haven Public Schools for Yale’s Music in Schools Initiative.

Trout Fishing in America is Keith Grimwood (electric bass/upright bass and
vocals) and Ezra Idlet (guitar/bouzouki/banjo and vocals). For over 40
years, they have entertained and engaged audiences of all ages with their
clever lyrics, genre-defying musical style, and inimitable stage presence.
Trout Fishing in America was in the first wave of artist-owned labels (Trout
Records) to successfully record and market their music. Drawing inspiration
from childhoods spent listening to top-40 AM radio, the two songwriters
season their music with stylings from rock and roll, blues, folk, country,
bluegrass, funk, Latin, and reggae.whatever sound best brings out the flavor
of their lyrics. Their recordings have garnered three National Indie
Awards, multiple Parents Choice and NAPPA Gold awards, the American Library Award, as well as four Grammy nominations. In April 2019, they released their 26th album, "Live At The Epic Theater." It is not unusual for three or four generations of a family to show up at a Trout performance and this is a point of pride for both Keith and Ezra. It may be impossible to categorize what kind of music they play, but after attending a Trout show, you'll know exactly what you've witnessed: two guys who still love what they do and are excited to share it with you.

Why does America vote as it does on Election Day? Since 1948, the American National Election Studies (ANES) has provided data to inform explanations of election outcomes in the United States. The ANES provides survey data from a nationally representative sample of American adults to give researchers a view of the political world through the eyes of ordinary citizens.

In this ISR Insights talk, Dr. Vincent Hutchings (Professor, Department of Political Science; Research Professor, Center for Political Studies) will discuss the history of ANES and why it remains an essential resource for the social sciences. He will talk about the study’s approach to data collection and instrumentation in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes conducting surveys through a combination of Internet, video, and telephone interviews. Dr. Hutchings will also highlight politically-relevant results from recent studies, including attitudes on the Black Lives Matter movement.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Reduced Order Models using Graph Theoretic Approaches for Physical Systems (August 13, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75632 75632-19552843@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, August 13, 2020 12:00pm

Physical systems are conventionally studied using experiments, that may be costly, exceedingly difficult, or infeasible. Alternatively, various computational approaches, have proven rigorous and successful, but still suffer from being generally resource-intensive and occasionally difficult to interpret. Particularly for classes of systems that can be described by partial differential equations, such as for example multi-component crystalline solids undergoing mechanical deformations, and changes in chemical potential, high-fidelity solutions generally contain up to tens of millions of degrees of freedom. New methods must, therefore, be developed that represent this information in a lower-dimensional space, allowing for more efficient, and intuitive computations.

In this talk, I will be introducing a novel graph-theoretic approach for reduced-order modelling of a wide class of systems, allowing for more efficient and effective data-driven simulations. Concepts in graph theory will be introduced, including a rigorous non-local discrete calculus, and I will describe how states of a system and their relationships can be represented using this formalism. I will then discuss the numerical methods for computing a reduced-order model for quantities of interest and will show some preliminary results, indicating the validity and possible exciting future applications of this general framework.

Ever since their first meeting, over 20 years ago, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. For Matt and Robert, American roots music (folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, chants, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common. It is music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse, direct and powerful.

Says RJ Lannan of the New Age Reporter: "Her music is, to say the least, enthralling. ... She converts everyday love into musical terms we can all understand." Robin Spielberg is one of America's most beloved pianist/composers. With an impressive tour schedule and hundreds of thousands of recordings sold, this Steinway Artist has been winning the hearts of listeners around the world with her compelling melodies and sensitive piano technique since debuting her first recording of original solos for piano, "Heal of the Hand," in the late 1980s. Robin's music seems to have a healing quality, and indeed she is a Celebrity Spokesperson for the American Music Therapy Association. Her interest in music and healing grew when she witnessed firsthand the positive effect music had on her own baby daughter (born prematurely) during her four-month stay in the neo-natal intensive care unit. If you like Windham Hill-style solo piano music, you're going to love Robin Spielberg!

Kim Richey is a traveller—musically, physically, emotionally. Not merely restless or rootless, it's who she is. Willing to follow where the music leads, she's landed in Los Angeles, Nashville, London, working with a who's who of producers – Richard Bennett, Hugh Padgham, Bill Bottrell, Angelo, Giles Martin. She's attracted a coterie of top-shelf genre-definers—Jason Isbell, Trisha Yearwood, Chuck Prophet, My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel, Wilco's Pat Sansone—for her critically-lauded projects. She has also sung on records for Ryan Adams, Shawn Colvin, Isbell, and Rodney Crowell. Part of what draws them to the dusky honey of her crystalline alto is the way she writes: to and from the soul, never flinching from the conflicts and crushing moments, yet always finding dignity and resilience. Her arc of the human heart is true.

What We Hold, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels (August 19, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73889 73889-18779282@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, August 19, 2020 8:00am

His style is soothing yet polished ,which makes it hard to believe he began singing and writing music at age 30. "I felt a call to begin to write music but I was confused because I'd never done that before. When I said, 'I can't play an instrument, Lord,' He said, 'Get a guitar...' and here we are today!" Al says. Originating from Detroit, Al Bettis has opened for such artists as Valerie June (at The Ark), Dwele, and Leon Timbo.

LCDM is the most successful cosmology model in the past decades, proven by multiple independent observations including CMB, Supernovae, Large scale structures, etc. LCDM states that our flat universe (mostly) consists of dark matter and dark energy. However, as the precision of cosmological probes increases, some anomalies that cannot be perfectly explained by LCDM start to show up. Among them the most statistically significant one is the 4-5 \sigma discrepancy between early and late universe Hubble constant. In this talk, I will briefly summarize the facts we know about Hubble constant measurements, and present the current discussions in the field on the Hubble tension. After that, I will use my recent effort on resolving this tenison by decaying dark matter cosmology as an example, to demonstrate where such anomalies lead us to and how we explore beyond LCDM.

Ohio-born, Nashville-based songwriter Griffin House merges irresistible pop-rock hooks with moody Americana shades and an ability to boil his experiences down to sparse songs. Influenced by a line of artists running from Woody Guthrie to Wilco, Griffin developed a distinctive style marked by passionate melodies and layers of ambient guitar. His breakthrough album, "Flying Upside Down," was recorded with members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. Griffin's intelligent and heartfelt lyrics and melodies have garnered commercial and critical acclaim alike. From being featured on the CBS Sunday Morning Show and CNN Newsroom, to touring with the likes of John Mellencamp and the Cranberries, Griffin House opened for Toad the Wet Sprocket at The Ark and continues to gain national recognition—and to go deeper with his songwriting.
