Session Guest: Hannah Dickinson, Head Of Student Recruitment And International Relations, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance
Faculty Lead: Jonathan Kuuskoski (he/his)

For two weeks every February, Trinity Laban’s usual creative atmosphere gets supercharged. There are no lectures, no classes, no assignments. That’s because it’s time for CoLab, their eccentric two‑week festival of creativity and innovation. For the 2021 CoLab, 10 SMTD students spent a week at Trinity Laban working alongside students to devise and perform interdisciplinary works through the city of London. Join SMTD faculty supervisor Jonathan Kuuskoski and a member of the Trinity Laban team to learn more about the CoLab experience, understand how SMTD students are selected for this opportunity, and share our hopes for what SMTD participation might look like in the February 2022.

Launching Your Ship (April 8, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80485 80485-20728303@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 8, 2021 3:30pm

Organized By: CEW+

RSVP online here: http://www.cew.umich.edu/events/launching-your-ship

In this workshop, Woods will share experiences in creatively tackling problems and experiencing the joys of coalition building. Participants will be encouraged to think about how they approach situations where the ship they are in seems to be stuck in a port and is not going anywhere. Stuck in racism? Stuck in sexism? Stuck in certain social classes? What do you need to make your ship sail? Will a new captain do it? Or, should you be the “Captain of your own fate?” Do you need a new destination? Are you bored with the direction you have been going? Are you going in circles? Do you need new perspectives, new shipmates? Have you outgrown the mundane, xenophobic habits of those in your circle? How can you develop healthy habits to move your life and community forward? Short, interactive activities will assist each participant in using the ship metaphor to move forward in their life.

An integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy, social change, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.

Wendy Ann Woods served the citizens of Ann Arbor from 2001 to 2007 as City Councilwoman. She is a strong advocate for affordable housing, a vibrant downtown, a balanced budget, a living wage ordinance, and corporate social responsibility. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry Management and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Policy and Management at the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. Woods is the associate director of the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP), a nationally recognized living-learning program at the U-M that focuses on social justice, community service, diversity, and civic engagement. She also teaches a seminar for the students in MCSP, is a member of the Association of Black Professionals, Faculty, Administrators, and Staff at U-M, and serves on the advisory board for the University Outreach Council.

Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy Book Talk with Editors (April 12, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83151 83151-21282830@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 12, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies

Join us for a conversation with Asian American Studies Professors, Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis (San Francisco State University) and Dr. Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde (University of California, Davis), about their book Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy (Rutgers University Press, 2019). Moderated by Prof. Emily P. Lawsin (University of Michigan)

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Asian American women scholars experience shockingly low rates of tenure and promotion because of the particular ways they are marginalized by the intersectionalities of race and gender in academia. Although Asian American studies critics have long since debunked the model minority myth that constructs Asian Americans as the ideal academic subject, university administrators still treat Asian American women in academia as though they will simply show up and shut up. Consequently, because silent complicity is expected, power-holders will punish and oppress Asian American women severely when they question or critique the system. However, change is in the air. Fight the Tower is a continuation of the Fight the Tower movement, which supports women standing up for their rights to claim their earned place in academia and to work for positive change for all within academic institutions. The essays provide powerful portraits, reflections, and analyses of a population often rendered invisible by the lies that sustain intersectional injustices in order to operate an oppressive system. https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/fight-the-tower/9781978806368

Bios:
Dr. Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde is an associate professor of Asian American Studies and the founding director of the New Viet Nam Studies Initiative at the University of California, Davis. She is the author of Transnationalizing Viet Nam: Community, Culture, and Politics in the Diaspora, co-founder of the social justice movement, Fight the Tower, and co-editor of Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy.

Dr. Wei Ming Dariotis is a professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. She is co-editor of War Baby/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art and Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy, and co-author of the definition of critical mixed race studies.

We provide empirical evidence that visceral factors affect financial risk taking by showing that exposure to mass shootings alters mutual fund managers’ risk taking decisions. Funds that are exposed to mass shootings subsequently decrease risk relative to their peers. The effect that we document is temporary, lasting approximately one quarter before reverting to normal levels and is strongest among managers with demographics shown to express greater fear from mass shootings. Together with the literature on laboratory studies that show that market downturns induce fear, our findings suggest that fear could exacerbate variation in risk taking, generating the highly volatile countercyclical risk premiums shown to exist in markets.

Ziibimijwang Farm is helping restore food sovereignty for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and other communities throughout the northern Great Lakes region.

What opportunities and benefits are there for Native American Tribes and Communities in operating a sustainable, community-based farm? What are the challenges associated with this approach and how can they be successfully managed? How can collaboration with tribal and non-tribal institutions, such as the University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, help promote Ziibimijwang’s mission?

Please join us as Joe Van Alstine will discuss ways in which Ziibimijwang is working to provide a reliable food source for tribal community members independent of the larger food system, encourage healthy eating, and enhance people’s knowledge of how to raise their own food.

Abstract:
My lab's research involves the development and application of systems biology approaches—combining computation, machine learning, quantitative modeling, and experiments—to study the immune system in health and disease. Recent technological and computational advances allow comprehensive interrogation of multiple modalities (e.g., proteins, mRNAs, immune receptor sequences) in single cell resolution in the human population. Here I will highlight our work in the analysis human and single cell variations along the axes of early immune development, vaccination, and COVID-19. If time permits, I will also discuss the integration of tissue imaging, machine learning, and multiscale dynamical modeling of immune cell interactions to investigate the homeostatic regulation of autoreactive T cells.

Faculty Lead: Amy Chavasse

Folk singer and modern dancer, Jay Peng Zhang, is from the Tujia and Miao ethnic minority groups of Western Hunan Province. Jay’s research maintains a focus on rituals and their inspirational role in his contemporary practice. Culturally rooted songs and traditions from his native place Yongshun (Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Western Hunan) form the core of his work. Jay will share his research through a performative talk including movement and songs from Miao and Tujia minorities as well as wearing the traditional attire he inherited from his grandmother. As one of the few remaining practitioners of traditional Tujia songs and aware of the recent policies of tourism and entertainment, Jay raises questions about authenticity and the rapidly changing conditions of Miao and Tujia minorities in China today. Peng Zhang will share his research in song, performed live via ZOOM, and provide context for his examination of these cultural artifacts in his lecture. Videos and images from his home land in Western Hunan will amplify the exchange.

Your graduate degree may seem your greatest achievement. Congratulations. But now may be the time for something totally different. That basically describes my 46-year succession of careers: physics professor, management consultant, statistical taxation consultant, bank operations consultant, engineering information systems manager, security systems developer, public health official, entrepreneur, and corporate executive. Each transition got easier, less threatening, and more rewarding. That seemingly divergent list of positions grew directly out of my physics graduate school experience. Physics is everywhere and a Michigan Ph.D. in physics will open many doors you did not know were there. But you may have a lot of post-doctoral learning to do. Much of that learning will be about yourself. Perhaps I can be of assistance.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

Join the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) and Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) Social Connectivity & Community Engagement for a free virtual screening  of "ONE THOUSAND & ONE JOURNEYS: THE ARAB AMERICANS" and dialogue on Activism, Advocacy and Allyship with film director Abe Kasbo. A zoom watch party and discussion will take place at 5:30 p.m. with the film's executive producer and director who will share the untold story of almost 200 years of the contributions of those who immigrated to the United States from the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf have made to the American fabric. A zoom link for the discussion after registration in a separate email. Access only available for U-M students, staff, and faculty.

ABOUT THE FILM

“Arab-Americans have proudly ventured beyond their ethnicity, language and religion to make noteworthy contributions to both the immigrant experience and ultimately the American experience. They served this nation with significant contributions throughout the spectrum of society – as politicians and public servants, entertainers, physicians, business leaders, and educators. It is this extraordinary and uniquely American story of people and places that must be told.” Abe Kasbo, filmmaker.A Thousand And One Journeys: The film vividly paints a portrait of the Arab-American immigrant experience through the stories of people who, like all Americans, immigrated in pursuit of the American Dream, including Senator George Mitchell, Jamie Farr, General John Abizaid, Anthony Shadid, Helen Thomas and more. With historical immigration patterns as background, the film explores the personal stories of Arab-Americans and how they have contributed to the collective American experience. At a time when the media tends to paint Arab peoples and culture with the broad brush of terrorism, it is increasingly important to present a positive image of the many people of Middle Eastern, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula who have made America their home, and highlight their American journey as an important part of the larger American Experience. As the Arab-American community increasingly finds itself in the media and public spotlight, now is the time to present a positive image of Arab-Americans and the diversity of their contributions, experiences, backgrounds and faith.

ABOUT THE FILM SERIES

“Activism is inherently a creative endeavor. It takes a radical imagination to be an activist, to envision a world that is not there. It takes imagination and that’s not far from art.” - Ava DuVernayMESA’s social connectivity and CCI hope to generate thought provoking discussion, engagement around advocacy, activism and allyship this semester by presenting a series of films huddled around these topics, areas that we believe require critical and intentional reflection year round. Each film presentation will conclude with a discussion from students, professionals, and artists familiar with the themes presented throughout the series and in the film. Each film and discussion will be available virtually and will take place the third Tuesday each month at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available through MUTO for each film. (2/16 - Just Mercy, 3/16 - Hidden Figures, 4/20 - One Thousand Journeys: The Arab-Americans).

Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

AIA Lecture | Rediscovering Napata—Capital City of Ancient Kush (April 21, 2021 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83771 83771-21501088@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 21, 2021 8:00pm

Napata (modern Jebel Barkal), located on the Middle Nile in what is now northern Sudan, was an urban center for nearly 2,000 years, at least 1500 BCE to 250 CE. While earlier generations of research at the site focused on the monumental pyramids, temples, and palaces that are its most visible remains, a new project at the site aims to reconceptualize these scattered monuments as parts of an ancient city. Magnetometry and test excavation in 2019 and 2020 have identified a previously unrecognized area of settlement (a "lost city") and begin to allow us to evaluate the local environment and economy.

This lecture is presented by the Archaeological Institute of America, Southern Nevada chapter.

Abstract:

The quest to understand consciousness, once the purview of philosophers and theologians, is now actively pursued by scientists of many stripes. This talk looks at consciousness from the perspective of theoretical computer science. It formalizes the Global Workspace Theory (GWT) originated by cognitive neuroscientist Bernard Baars and further developed by him, Stanislas Dehaene, and others. Our major contribution lies in the precise formal definition of a Conscious Turing Machine (CTM), also called a Conscious AI. We define the CTM in the spirit of Alan Turing’s simple yet powerful definition of a computer, the Turing Machine (TM). We are not looking for a complex model of the brain nor of cognition but for a simple model of (the admittedly complex concept of) consciousness. After formally defining CTM, we give a formal definition of consciousness in CTM. We then suggest why the CTM has the feeling of consciousness. The reasonableness of the definitions and explanations can be judged by how well they agree with commonly accepted intuitive concepts of human consciousness, the range of related concepts that the model explains easily and naturally, and the extent of its agreement with scientific evidence.

Examining the impact of COVID-19 on adults with physical disabilities from marginalized communities (April 22, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83637 83637-21446269@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 22, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

This webinar will present the findings from a recent study on the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults with physical disabilities from marginalized communities in Southeast Michigan, one of the early pandemic epicenters in the United States. Interviews with 16 adults revealed how participants either had to engage in risky behavior to have their needs met or avoid risk and not have those needs met. They contribute to understandings of risk, its impact on physical and psychological health, and the importance of accommodations. The study expands insight into early responses to the pandemic among individuals with long-term physical disabilities from marginalized communities. It helps elucidate how socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity can differentially impact the lives of adults with physical disabilities and further marginalize a population that is “always already” vulnerable. This knowledge can expand awareness and appreciation of how social, economic, and political systems are structured and integrated into future clinical guidelines and emergency response policies and more adequately addressed.

PROTEST: Justice for Daunté Wright (April 23, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83789 83789-21524504@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 23, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Diag - Central Campus
Organized By: Association of Black Social Work Students

The University of Michigan has ignored police brutality and systemic racism for too long! Join the protest to hold them accountable. We will be creating shirts on-site, please bring a shirt to participate. We will be meeting in the Diag then the march will continue throughout campus.

Purpose

The unjust and unnecessary death of Daunté Wright is one of the most recent examples of how systemic racism has claimed the life of yet another Black person. We, the School of Social Work Community, are responding to this national, pervasive problem by saying “enough is enough,” and we need to make system-level change in our own sphere of influence. The University of Michigan must urgently move towards system-level changes by promoting more anti-racist practices and policies in our community. The University of Michigan, with its abundance of resources, should also be taking concrete actions to support the family and loved ones of Daunté Wright and the countless others who have lost someone to police brutality.

Justice for Daunté Wright looks like supporting his family as they deal with this traumatic loss; it looks like respecting his life enough to call his death a murder, not an accident. Justice for Daunté Wright looks like holding the police officer who murdered him fully accountable, and, more broadly, it looks like working to dismantle the systemic problems that lead to police brutality. While it is easy to point to implicit bias or a lack of training, the root cause of police terrorism and other systems that disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations is hatred in the form of racism. Unfortunately, higher education is a system steeped in racism as well. Many BIPOC students are harmed while pursuing their education, and many White students move through their educational experience without learning how they are perpetuating oppression. These problems impact students, faculty, and staff.

As students in the School of Social Work, we have identified many ways that our school harms our BIPOC community members, and we know similar problems exist throughout the University. Similarly, we have identified many missed opportunities to prepare students to exit the University with the skills and knowledge to be anti-racist and disrupt cycles of harm. These are the ways systemic racism continues, and this is part of the reason we fail to make meaningful progress on complex issues like police brutality.

We demand that the University of Michigan uses its power as a leading university to take immediate action to support Daunté Wright’s family. We demand that the School of Social Work take direct action to dismantle systemic racism in our community. We demand the University broadly considers how the issues that exist in the microcosm of the School of Social Work exist University-wide. We demand that the University of Michigan and School of Social Work adopt intentional practices to counteract the harm imposed on the BIPOC Community. Enough is enough!

An amazing supply chain delivered over 200,000 tons of grain annually to feed the inhabitants of imperial Rome, the world’s largest city. This tour uses artifacts to follow that supply chain from an Egyptian farming village to Rome’s great ports, all the way through to the final milling and baking of the bread that would feed a million Romans.

Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
Wednesday, April 28, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981

A burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating, critical, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.

Kira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress, social ties and health, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Interpretable and Realtime Predictions of Social Interactions for Autonomous Vehicles (April 29, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83792 83792-21530357@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 29, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

Autonomous vehicles present an opportunity to transform transportation. The benefits range from increased access to mobility and time freed from driving, to greater safety due to automation. These robots are powered by the coordination of various systems to perceive the world and effect motion control. Crucially, the autonomous vehicle operates in an open environment alongside fellow road users with whom it will interact regularly. Predictions of fellow road users' intents and future motion guide these interactions and specify a large part of the autonomous vehicle's behavior. Spurred by advances in deep learning, recent prediction methods have increasingly begun to consider how interactions affect future motion in ever more varied environments. The corresponding gains in accuracy translate to more anticipatory and less reactive autonomous vehicle behavior. One drawback is an increase in complexity, which can lead to less interpretable predictions and behavior. Achieving realtime performance and handling missing data caused by adverse sensing conditions present additional challenges.

To support autonomous vehicle behavior that is transparent and predictable, this thesis develops interpretable prediction methods. Model-based approaches provide the vehicle for building interpretable predictions, and novel inference procedures are developed to generate the predictions in realtime. Adopting a probabilistic framework enables natural handling of missing data and affords the flexibility to model interactions in varied environments beyond those described by existing interpretable methods. Experiments on real highway traffic and urban data demonstrate the developed methods' effectiveness.

Saturday Sampler tours are back! We've missed you and are thrilled to be offering our Saturday Sampler tours virtually. Join us over Zoom to explore the Kelsey Museum from the comfort of your home.

The theme of this week's tour is "Egyptian Burial Practices and the Afterlife."
The ancient Egyptians believed in a happy and eternal afterlife, and their burial practices reflected this. Mummification preserved the bodies of the deceased so they could enjoy the food and grave goods buried with them. Decorations on tomb walls depicted banquets, harvests, and other lovely scenes of what might lie ahead. This Zoom tour will examine some aspects of ancient Egyptian burial practices using artifacts from the Kelsey's collection as well as images of artifacts in several other museums.
