The field of Digital Humanities, and particularly the increasing accessibility of digital resources, has opened a significant number of opportunities for the study of sources that can be highly relevant to history and archaeology. These opportunities include the use of methodologies from the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Linguistics and the application of a diversity of techniques and methods for the large-scale analysis and exploration of collections of historical documents.

In the case of the early colonial history of Mexico, there is an enormous variety of historical documents related to the economic, social and political life at that time. An example of this is the sixteenth-century Relaciones Geográficas de Nueva España (the Geographic Reports of New Spain). Created from the responses to a questionnaire ordered by Philip II’s and obtained between 1577 and 1585, the Geographic Reports sought to compile all the information available on the American territories under Spanish rule. Due to its essential content, these reports have been the object of study by a large number of researchers, and are frequently used in the analysis of the political, social, territorial and economic situation at the time. Although numerous studies seek to understand the shifting territorial situation in New Spain, two enormous challenges have remained. The first one is the considerable size or volume of information to be analysed and compared. The second has been the precise identification of the places mentioned in these reports, especially on a large scale.

In this presentation, I will introduce the project sponsored by the Transatlantic Platform for the Humanities and Social Sciences (T-AP) called “Digging into Early Colonial Mexico: a large-scale computational analysis of historical documents”, and some of its results. Taking as a basis the historical corpus of the Geographic Reports of New Spain, the project main objectives have been: 1) to adapt and develop techniques from Artificial Intelligence, including aspects of Natural Language Processing, Text Mining and Geographic Information Systems for the extraction and analysis of historical information from this source, and 2) to design computational methodologies for the identification of possible large-scale historical patterns. This research is allowing us to clarify some of the essential geographic questions related to the period and the colonial situation in this territory. I will also present a methodology termed Geographical Text Analysis and some of the most critical outputs from this project. These include software developed to carry out this type of analysis, the first sixteenth-century digital gazetteer of Mexico and Guatemala, and the first experiments using Natural Language Processing to automatically annotate the Relaciones corpus.

The Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners is one of the largest exhibitions of art by incarcerated artists in the country. Each year, faculty, staff and students from the University of Michigan travel to correctional facilities across Michigan and select work for the exhibition while providing feedback and critique that strengthens artist’s work and builds community around art making inside prisons.

The pandemic halted the 25th Annual Exhibition days before it was scheduled to open in March 2020. PCAP is excited to bring you the 2020 show in a new digital gallery. Visit https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D for a link to the exhibit and a full calendar of online events.

Artwork sales appointments will be available March 17–March 31, 2021. Visitors can book sales appointments on the exhibit website. Sales will be made by phone, and all artwork will be shipped to customers. Artists set their own prices and receive 100% of net sales revenue.

This exhibit and events are presented with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Om of Medicine, and hundreds of individual donors. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

As a scholar focused on addressing equity within arts education, Dr. Fitzpatrick draws upon her formative experiences as a white teacher of students of color to examine systemic injustice within educational spaces. Within this workshop, she will encourage attendees to first connect with their own artistic selves, considering the ways that the arts are woven within their own life’s story. Following a journey to reconsider their positionality with regard to the arts, attendees will examine the ways that human beings use the arts to address injustice, particularly at moments of crisis such as those we are experiencing today. Equity in arts education will be examined from this broader perspective, with each participant reflecting on their own journey within educational spaces as it relates to identity and marginalization.

An integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy, social change, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of wellbeing and focus. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.

Kate Fitzpatrick-Harnish, PhD is Associate Professor of Music Education for the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan. Before coming to U-M in the fall of 2008, Fitzpatrick served as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Louisville. Fitzpatrick is an active and prolific researcher, focusing on the experiences of those who have been historically marginalized in music education. Her research has been published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Southwestern Musician, the Music Educators Journal, and the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, in addition to numerous book chapters. Her book, Urban Music Education: A Practical Guide for Teachers, was published in 2015 by Oxford University Press. Fitzpatrick has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and is a member of the Music Education Advisory Board for the Save the Music Foundation. She is the past national elected chair of the Social Sciences Special Research Interest Group for the National Association of Music Education, and also serves as a frequent clinician and guest conductor with bands across the United States. An avid supporter of public school music programs, she is the former director of instrumental music at Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio, where she directed the district’s largest band and orchestra program and was awarded the Brass Band of Columbus’ 2003 God and Country Award, recognizing her “outstanding, sensitive leadership of young people.”

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring an event to mark the 5-year anniversary of the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Public understanding is limited regarding how exposures to toxic chemicals affect health and how they might be regulated. Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. The 1976 TSCA has been widely acknowledged to be a weak and ineffective law, and widespread exposures and harms continue. In the U.S., everyone is exposed to industrial and toxic chemicals, dozens and probably hundreds – well before birth. The amount of chemicals manufactured and imported continues to grow – it is trillions of pounds – and these chemicals remain largely unregulated. At the same time, we have seen an increase in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, autism, and infertility. Not everyone is equally at risk, and a higher burden of disease falls on low wealth communities and communities of color. These health disparities in exposures and health effects are illustrated and exacerbated by COVID.

The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Abstract: Drug combinations have the potential to greatly expand our pharmacopeia while reducing both cost and drug resistance. Yet the current drug-discovery approach is unable to screen the astronomical number of possible combinations in different cell types and does not account for the complex environment inside the body. We have developed AI tools - INDIGO and MAGENTA - that predict the efficacy of drug combinations based on the properties of the drugs, the pathogen, and the infection environment. We are also using modeling to identify drugs that work in synergy with the host immune system. Using INDIGO and MAGENTA, we have identified highly synergistic combinations of repurposed drugs to treat drug resistant infections including Tuberculosis, the deadliest bacterial infection. INDIGO also accurately predicts the outcome of past clinical trials of drug combinations. Our ultimate goal is to create a personalized approach to treat infections using AI.

Biography: Chandrasekaran received his bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Anna University in 2008, and a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2013. He worked at Harvard University and MIT as a Harvard Junior Fellow between 2013 and 2016 and became an Assistant Professor at UM in 2017. His lab develops systems biology algorithms for drug discovery. Computer models from his lab like INDIGO and MAGENTA are being used to design effective therapies against drug resistant pathogens. His lab also develops systems biology algorithms to understand metabolic regulation. The approaches that they have created (PROM, ASTRIX, DFA, EGEM and GEMINI) perform complementary functions in modeling of metabolic and regulatory networks. Chandrasekaran’s research has been published in Cell, Genome Biology, mBio, and PNAS. For his work, Chandrasekaran previously received the 2013 Harvard Junior Fellowship, the 2011 Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) International Predoctoral Fellowship, the 2014 William Milton Fund award, 2018 UM Precision Health Investigator Award, and the 2018 Distinguished Young Investigator Award from the AICHE COBRA society.

FAST Lecture | Engraving One’s Name in the Wadi Hammamat Quarries: From Spatial Dynamics to Visual Discourses (March 18, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82959 82959-21227230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 18, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Located halfway between the Nile and the Red Sea, Wadi Hammamat is the modern name given to a section of this ancient Eastern Desert road where greywacke and siltstone quarries were exploited from the Predynastic period onward. In addition to a current project which aims to (re)edit the rich epigraphic material uncovered in situ, approximately 400 pre-Late Period inscriptions, this corpus has recently been re-explored in terms of writing practices. Through a multidimensional perspective, Vincent Morel will give some new insights into what these engravings “tell” beyond the strictly linguistic level. Focusing on the Old Kingdom material (3rd millennium BCE), he will make use of an original heuristic approach, associating material, visual, and (inter[icono])textual investigations, to better understand the intelligibility of the writing act itself, in a liminal place where the mere mortal could partake in the divine.

Please note, this lecture takes place at 12 p.m. Eastern.

Spectrum Center is proud to present Faith & Coming out: a student & parent panel on family, community, and loving yourself. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community have questions, fears, and hopes about how their queerness interacts with their faith, but it's not a subject often talked about. In an effort to help our students understand themselves better, we have brought together five people to share their stories about coming out or being come out to. There isn't one method to create a perfect harmony between an individual's religion and LGBTQ+ identity, but highlighting more narratives can help reflect the many possible paths and make the journey just a little less uncertain.

This event's panelists come from the following religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Catholicism.

Stars are opaque, which makes it difficult to study their interiors. Recent space-based telescopes have led to the new field of asteroseismology: by measuring global oscillation modes of a star, you can infer its interior properties. Massive stars have convection in their cores which can generate waves, which might be detectable at the surface. In the first part of this talk, I will describe a heuristic way of estimating wave generation by convection, and compare it to high-resolution numerical simulations in Cartesian geometry. To make quantitative predictions to compare with observations, one must run simulations in spherical geometry. In the second part of my talk, I will present a new spectral algorithm for solving nearly arbitrary, tensorial PDEs in spherical coordinates. The challenge is to devise bases which respect regularity conditions at r=0, which depend on the rank of the tensor. The algorithm can be easily applied to the problem of wave generation by convection in stars, as well as a wide range of other problems in stellar astrophysics, core geophysics, and planetary sciences.

The goal of this project is to gather residents in WQ to reflect upon, share, and experience their perspectives through various mediums. For this year’s program we will explore the theme of resilience amid uncertainty, conflict, and loss. Resilience can foster hope, determination, confidence, and the ability to bounce back despite failures and setbacks. We will collectively read pieces written by Audre Lorde, Maya Angelou, and Tino Villanueva. We will then individually create a “found poem” from these pieces based on what spoke to you or how you relate to their work.

This program is specifically for residents in West Quad. Other interested community members can participate via the campus wide virtual offerings.

The discovery that host immune defenses could be primed, a process called immunization or vaccination, helped to eradicate smallpox. Immunization has changed the global impacts of infectious diseases. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines that have Emergency Use Authorization are one part of the toolkit for managing COVID-19. What is mRNA anyway? We will explore connections among mRNA, milkmaids and microbial pathogens.

Advances in machine learning have led to quite fluent natural language generation technologies. Most of our current optimizations and evaluations focus on accuracy in output. Faithful generation is considered a nice to have, a luxury. In this talk I make the argument that faithful generation is crucial to our generation technologies especially given the scale and impact NLP technologies have on people’s lives.

Mona Diab is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the George Washington University where she directs the Care4Lang NLP lab. She is also Research Scientist with Facebook AI. She conducts research in Statistical Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a rapidly growing, exciting field of research in artificial intelligence and computer science. Interdisciplinarity is inherent to NLP, drawing on the fields of computer algorithms, software engineering, statistics, machine learning, linguistics, pragmatics, information technology, etc. In NLP, researchers model language and its use, and build both analytical models and predictive ones. In Professor Diab’s NLP lab, they address problems in social media processing, building robust enabling technologies such as syntactic and semantic processing tools for written texts in different languages, information extraction tools for large data, multilingual processing, machine translation, and computational sociolinguistic processing. Professor Diab has a special interest in Arabic NLP, where the emphasis has been on investigating Arabic dialect processing where there are very few available automated resources.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Abstract: Antibodies are an integral part of the adaptive immune response, and are a critical component of both vaccine-induced and naturally-acquired immunity. The development of deep sequencing approaches in recent years has allowed us to sample a significant fraction of the diverse repertoire of B cell receptor sequences from which antibodies are made. These sequences encode a wealth of information on the somatic rearrangement and evolutionary processes that determine the contours of our antibody repertoires, and thus our ability to respond appropriately to pathogens and vaccines. Extracting this information, however, requires a careful inference approach across several different analysis steps. I will describe the computational approaches that we have taken to solving these problems, which constitute the partis software package, and describe their application in several projects, including HIV and Dengue data.

* * *

Biography: Duncan attended the University of California at Santa Cruz for his undergraduate studies in physics, completing his thesis on energy transport in condensed matter theory in 2005. He completed his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014, working on the Large Hadron Collider at the European particle physics laboratory (CERN). His thesis described the observation of Higgs boson decays to four leptons. Since 2014, he has worked in Frederick Matsen’s lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, first as a postdoctoral researcher and more recently as a staff scientist, writing new computational methods for the analysis of B cell receptor deep sequencing data.

"Pandemic Politics: From Lockdown to Liberation” is a Detroit community-based course that welcomes participation by the general public, including college students from both U-M and Wayne State University. The class is hosted and developed by a partnership among: the General Baker Institute (a non-profit community-based organization located in NW Detroit) faculty in the U-M Semester in Detroit Program, and faculty from the Wayne State University Department of African-American Studies and the Damon Keith Center for Civil Rights. This class is made possible with generous support provided by the Michigan-Mellon Project on the Egalitarian Metropolis, College of LSA & A. Alfred Taubman College of. Architecture and Urban Planning.
The minicourse will explore contemporary and historical intersections between public health and structural racism - both in Detroit and throughout U.S. society more broadly. Each week, we will be joined by Detroit activist-scholars who will help everyone more deeply understand what is happening today in Detroit and in our country more broadly.

In addition to the class content described above, U-M students who register for the 1-credit mini-course will also have the opportunity to meet and to learn from some of the veteran Detroit activists who are building the General Baker Institute (GBI). The organization recently opened its new community center in NW Detroit to honor the legacy of General Gordon Baker Jr., one of the most important labor and community activists in modern Detroit history.

For more information about this public series, please contact Craig Regester, Semester in Detroit Associate Director, at 313-505-5185 or email: regester@umich.edu. Session themes are outlined below, and the speakers will be announced (as well as suggested reading materials) on this website closer to the session dates.

COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on our nation for almost a year. The advent of a vaccine presents the promise of a way out of this pandemic. However, concerns over the safety of the vaccine in conjunction with the historical reservations of People of Color regarding medical research and treatment have made for a tepid response to the availability of the vaccine. What are the best options to move forward? How do we address the concerns of those reluctant to take the vaccine? Join us for a Town Hall Meeting as we discuss the concerns and offer solutions.

Panelists:
- Dr. Jessie Marshall, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School
- Dr. Najibah Rehman, Medical Director, Detroit Health Department
- Nicholas St. Fleur, Knight-Wallace Reporting Fellow, University of Michigan

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Learning Health Sciences

Speakers Stefan Boes, PhD and Sarah Mantwill, PhD from the university of Lucerne will discuss the Swiss Learning Health System.

Promoting and supporting uptake of evidence and evidence-informed decision-making in health-systems related policy and practice is a challenge. In Switzerland, the need to address this matter has been increasingly emphasized by different actors in the health system. In particular, the lack of comprehensive coordination efforts in the field of health services research, and subsequent knowledge translation activities, has been stressed. In response, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) was established as a nationwide project in 2017, currently involving 10 academic partner institutions. One of the overarching objectives of the SLHS is to bridge research, policy, and practice by providing an infrastructure that supports learning cycles by: continuously identifying issues relevant to the Swiss health system, systemizing relevant evidence, presenting potential courses of action, and revising and reshaping responses. Key features of learning cycles in the SLHS include the development of policy/evidence briefs that serve as a basis for stakeholder dialogues with actors from research, policy and practice. Issues that are identified to be further pursued are monitored for potential implementation and eventually evaluated to inform new learning cycles and to support continuous learning within the system.

Dr. Boes and Dr. Mantwill will provide an overview of the SLHS and its key features, as well as its capacity building efforts to train young researchers in the field of learning health systems, and the development of a centralized metadata repository in support of creating a sufficient large evidence basis to support learning cycles in the Swiss health system. Further, they will discuss lessons learned from the past and the newest developments of the SLHS in light of a second funding phase supported by the Swiss government.

Meals of Meaning: Gender & Faith (March 25, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82982 82982-21233243@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 25, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Campus Involvement

In recognition of Women's History Month, we invite you to join us for a discussion about the intersection of gender and faith. No matter your gender identity or faith, we hope you'll consider joining us for a meal and conversation. In times of heightened tension, division, and expressions of hate, faith, spiritual and secular communities have a vital role to play in being stewards of resilience, collective courage, and creating braver space in the presence of difference.

Meals of Meaning provide an opportunity for students to come together for a virtual dinner conversation (meal provided) and the chance to go beneath the surface, lean into vulnerability and to explore the struggles and stories that make up our lives.

MEAL PICK UP: Meal pick-up will be in the Michigan Union OR on North Campus (location coming soon!) from 12-12:30 pm on March 25. If you are unable to pick-up a meal for any reason, but would still like to participate in the discussion, please simply note "No Meal" in the question section.

DISCUSSION: Facilitated discussion will take place over Zoom from 1-2:30 pm. Links will be provided to registered participants.

Healing Justice: Rediscovering Spirit (March 26, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82980 82980-21233242@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 26, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Campus Involvement

As part of the Healing Justice: Holistic Self-Care During Challenging Times series, this Rediscovering Spirit session aims to increase awareness of interdependence of the self, relationships, work and the world. Spiritual practice can contribute to healing justice in the following ways: 1) Help to cultivate balance and alleviate stress in one’s life; 2) Learn how to de-identify with things that no longer serve us; 3) Increase connection and 4) Increase personal and collective empowerment such that one can more effectively work with, and on behalf of others to alleviate suffering and end oppression.

U-M Counseling and Psychological Services will offer two workshops (“Healing Justice in the Fabric of Community” and “Healing Justice: Rediscovering Spirit” ) focused on components of Loretta Pyles’ (2018) Healing Justice: Self-Care for Change Makers. To be true to healing justice, it’s vital to highlight its origins. The movement was originally created by queer folx, BIPOC, women and those with disabilities starting from the 60s with a resurgence in the late 2000s. U-M participants will learn ways of healing “a sense of brokenness or disconnection that may be a result of trauma, oppressive socio-cultural narratives and practices or the ways in which humans may lose touch with each other and themselves.”

All students (undergraduate, graduate and professional) are invited to attend this powerful session!

This event is over, but all the activities can be found at the Kelsey@Home page, https://lsa.umich.edu/kelsey/education/kelsey-home.html.

During the pandemic we have heard a lot about “self-care,” but what exactly does that mean? At the most basic level, it is how we take care of ourselves. The food we eat, the exercise we do to stay healthy, and the medicine we take when we get sick. However, self-care is more than that. It includes all the things we do to stay happy and healthy. That could be taking a walk or a run outside, or doing some arts and crafts. Maybe it’s playing a favorite sport with friends, or trying a new recipe.

During this virtual Family Week, we’ll learn about how people in the ancient Mediterranean practiced self-care. We’ll even try out some of their techniques for ourselves.

We kick off the week with an introductory tour about ancient self-care. Be sure to join us on Sunday, March 28, at 2 PM. We will take a closer look at some objects in the Kelsey collection related to health and wellness. Join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96083862910.

UROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

Summer research mentors will collaborate with UROP students participating in 10-week full time Summer Fellowships.
