Constrained and Spectral-Spatial RF Pulse Design for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for modern medicine, providing a non-invasive glimpse inside the human body with excellent soft tissue contrast and no ionizing radiation. The radio frequency (RF) pulse in an MRI acquisition is integral to producing an image and can be tailored to particular applications. This thesis focuses on the design of RF pulses and explores the MRI physics, convex optimization problems, and experimental methodologies behind doing so.

First, we introduce constrained RF pulse design which enables efficient RF pulse design with meaningful, physical constraints such as peak RF amplitude and integrated RF power. We explore constrained RF pulse design for simultaneous multislice imaging, a powerful tool for accelerating MRI and combatting notoriously long acquisition times. Compared to a conventional simultaneous multislice pulse designed without constraints, our constrained pulses achieved lower magnitude normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) for an equivalent RF pulse length, or alternatively, the same NRMSE for a shorter pulse length. Constrained RF pulse design forms a basis for the rest of the dissertation.

Secondly, we describe a special class of RF pulses, “prewinding pulses”, that help correct for intravoxel dephasing due to magnetic field inhomogeneity, that can lead to signal loss. We propose a spectral-spatial prewinding pulse that leverages a larger effective recovery bandwidth than equivalent, purely spectral pulses. In an in vivo experiment imaging the brain of a human volunteer, we designed spectral-spatial pulses with a complex NMRSE of 0.18, which is significantly improved from the complex NRMSE of 0.54 in the purely spectral pulse for the same experiment.

Finally, we consider a slab-selective prewinding pulse, that extends spectral and spectral-spatial prewinding pulses to a common 3D imaging method. Here we integrate optimal control optimization to further improve the slab-selective spectral pulse design and see an in vivo improvement of excitation NRMSE from 0.40 to 0.37 and a major reduction in mean residual magnetization magnitude after a tip-up pulse from 0.18 to 0.02 when adding optimal control. This method has the potential to connect prewinding pulse design from the MRI physicist engineering workspace to a clinical application.

In summary, we show that constrained RF pulse design provides an efficient way of improving MRI in terms of acquisition speed (via multislice imaging) and image quality (via signal recovery).

Lost in Translation: The Architecture and/of Chinese Edition (October 3, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55224 55224-13700533@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 3, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

This event is organized by GRIN with generous support from Rackham and in partnership with Taubman College DEI.

The Community of Scholars is comprised of recipients of 2018 summer fellowships from IRWG and the Rackham Graduate School for graduate students pursuing research, scholarship, or creative activities focusing on women and/or gender.

To encourage cross-disciplinary exchange, the fellows participated in a weekly seminar in May and June, during which they discussed their work-in-progress. In July and August, they dispersed for research and writing. They reconvene for the annual Community of Scholars Symposium, to share the product of their summer’s work with each other and a broader audience.

The fellows have designed the panels for this symposium to showcase the conversations across disciplines and fields about scholarship on women and gender that emerged during the summer seminar.

Time: 11:30am-1:00pm
Special Guest: Ruby Sales–Building a Vibrant Youth Culture at 6:30pm in the new Taubman College Commons.
Light refreshments will be served.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales has made the struggle for racial justice one of the centerpieces of her work through the SpiritHouse Project. Recognizing a need to nurture the hope that still resides in young people as well as to revive an intergenerational community and human compassion, in 2016 the SpiritHouse Project introduced Hope Zones.™ They are alternative learning spaces designed to strengthen the hope, courage, reason, and will of young people to individually and collectively stand up for themselves with dignity, clarity and nonviolent persistence. According to the Harvard Gazette, Ruby spoke about the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and shared, “Even in the face of challenges, there are reasons for hope. Freedom must be seen as a constant struggle. We don’t have to give in to despair.”

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: U-M College of Pharmacy

Does the much-maligned carbon dioxide, a driving force behind global warming, deserve its bad rap?

In his upcoming Distinguished University Professor lecture, Gordon L. Amidon, PhD’71, will explore carbon dioxide from many angles, “the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

The talk will take place at 4 p.m. on November 14 in the Rackham Amphitheatre. The lecture and reception that follows are free and open to the public.

Prof. Gordon L. Amidon is the William I. Higuchi Distinguished University Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His research aims to understand the gastrointestinal factors that control drug absorption from an oral drug product.

“I will present a modest attempt to resurrect the image of carbon dioxide,” explains Amidon. “While global warming and the role that atmospheric gases play in the ‘green house’ effect has received considerable attention in the scientific and public press, I will point to the more positive role of carbon dioxide in evolution and in biology.”

Distinguished University Professorships recognize exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievements, national and international reputation, superior teaching and mentoring, and an impressive record of service. Each Professor delivers a lecture of their choosing during this event.

University of Michigan’s Art & Design, Business, Engineering, and School of Information students are gearing up for the 23rd offering of the Integrated Product Development (IPD) Trade Show! Members of our community will gather to view and make purchase decisions from the “best of the best” of their work over the past semester in this interdisciplinary course.

IPD is an experiential, cross-disciplinary course that puts teams of students from Art & Design, Business, Engineering, and Information in a competitive product development environment. This innovative course has been featured on CNN and written up in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Businessweek. The course is hosted by the Tauber Institute for Global Operations, and is taught jointly by faculty members Eric Svaan of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and Stephanie Tharp from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

You won’t want to miss this year’s trade show!

The Problem Statement: Design and produce a product or tool to be used with one hand, that enables people to perform routine daily tasks that otherwise would require two hands.

See the actual products and test them out. Then cast your vote! Network, have fun and meet up with friends, old and new!

Parking is street meter or there is public parking available in the Hill Street Structure Parking Garage.

Event is Free and open to the public, with light refreshments.

GREAT LOCATION: Tauber Colloquium, at the Ross School of Business, 6th floor at 701 Tappan

Narrating Performance in Nineteenth-Century Britain

For nineteenth-century audiences, telling stories about theatrical events was a key part of the social experience of spectating. In this talk, I analyze how theatergoers and actors extended forms of audience participation by circulating narratives about performance in memoirs, letters, periodical essays, and novels. Investigating some of the specific ways that these writers drew on nineteenth-century techniques like epistolarity and seriality to narrate performance, I also outline some of the larger insights that can be gained from an intergeneric approach to theater writing -- both within the period and beyond.

Professor Chatterjee writes: "I have taught young people in three continents, and over two decades. My teaching interests have evolved to keep pace with my own travels in time. So the courses I have taught include Slavery and South Asian History, the Gender of South Asian pasts, Early Modernity in the subcontinent, and The Power of Performance.

Recently, I find myself drawn simultaneously to both intellectual and economic histories of the subcontinent. In particular, I am interested in the ways in which wealth travelled between and within monastic lineages in the past. Having worked on the ways in which monastic governmentality was forgotten in Indian historiography by the early decades of the twentieth century, I am currently revisiting the costs of such forgetting to women's wealth in eastern India. In brief, I am interested in excavating a new history of wealth."

Messianic Minimalism: Anecdotes of the Coming World (Benjamin, Bloch, Blumenberg) (February 15, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60669 60669-14937151@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 15, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Hans Blumenberg's 1988 book The Saint Matthew Passion, while ostensibly concerned with the possible, secular reception of Bach’s masterpiece, pursues a series of 'theological lines of flight' via anecdotes, insights, and apercus generated by often heterodox theological debates and their literary receptions. One such line of flight is the retraction of the passion itself in Gersholm Scholem’s anecdote about the advent of the messiah in which almost nothing changes, as retold by Benjamin, Bloch, and now Blumenberg. Here Blumenberg returns to his earlier concerns with Gnosticism (Legitmacy, 1966) and considers a different answer to what has gone so wrong with creation that it needs to be destroyed.

Paul Fleming is Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies as well as the Taylor Family Director of the Society for the Humanities. He has published monographs on Exemplarity and Mediocrity: The Art of the Average from Bourgeois Tragedy to Realism (2009) and The Pleasures of Abandonment: Jean Paul and the Life of Humor (2006) along with edited volumes on Hans Blumenberg, Siegfried Kracauer, the scholars around Stefan George, and Ulrich Peltzer. He is currently co-translating Blumenberg’s The Saint Matthew Passion for Cornell Press as well as completing a book-length project that examines the use of the anecdote in and as theory with respect to questions of exemplarity, evidence, history, and rhetoric.

Each new genetic test or medical app generates or collects more and more detailed health data, but may also raise serious issues for medicine, public health. Under what circumstances should a test be used, and how should it be implemented? Should people be allowed to choose or refuse a test, or should it be mandatory, as newborn screening is in some states? How should the data from these tests be used, and should individuals control access to the results of their tests? If test results are released to third parties, such as employers or insurers, what protections should be in place to protect individuals from unfair treatment based on test results, data collected, or genotype?

This Dissonance series event will take a multi-disciplinary look at these issues from a variety of theoretical and applied perspectives.

Panelists will include:
- Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and, Technology at Chicago Kent Law School

- Jodyn Platt, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School

What kinds of arguments can you use a dissertation to make, and how can you frame or position those arguments? Once you've committed to an argument, how do you arrange your dissertation to best serve it? How can you think about the overall shape of what you're doing and making? The Structuring Content workshop will present graduate students an opportunity to consider these questions, learn about some of the common components of dissertations in the humanities and social sciences, and ask questions about how to scaffold and build out their dissertation topics and projects.

Please join us for the latest installment of the ELPP Lecture Series, presented by Professor David Hunter from the American University Washington College of Law. Professor Hunter will discuss the global campaign to hold international financial Institutions like the World Bank accountable for the environmental damage and human rights violations caused by their projects. This will include the implications of Jam v. International Finance Corporation (IFC), a case pending before the US Supreme Court that challenges the World Bank’s claim of immunity. The case was brought by local fishermen in coastal India harmed by a coal-fired power plant. The case reflects one of several strategies for applying minimum environmental and human rights standards to the activities of international organizations.

This event is free and open to the public.

David Hunter is Professor of international and comparative environmental law at American University's Washington College of Law. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Accountability Counsel, the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide-US, and the Project on Government Oversight. He is a Member Scholar of the Center for Progressive Reform and a member of the Organization of American States’ Expert Group on Environmental Law, the InterAmerican Network for Environmental Law’s Advisory Board, and the Strategic Advisors Group for the International Finance Corporation’s Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman. He is co-author of International Environmental Law & Policy (5th ed.) and Climate Change Law (2nd ed.). His research interests include human rights and the environment, environmental standards and accountability mechanisms in international finance, and climate change litigation, law and policy.

Fixed Interest centers debt as a determinant of contemporary urbanization. We have assembled graduate students and leading scholars to explore the constellation of borrowing and lending and its expression in a variety of geographies, fields of practice, technologies, institutions, labor, and political ideologies. These presentations and discussions will interrogate the fringes and the FIREs (finance, insurance, and real estate) of debtor urbanization. This scholarship examines the relationship between debt and urban and neighborhood decline (in growing and shrinking cities).

Fixed Interest will include three graduate student papers and two lectures by path-breaking UM scholars relating debt to forms of urban and institutional power. Dr Rachel Weber, Professor of Urban Planning & Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will provide the closing lecture on value, property, and urban development.

A literature review is a foundational component of the dissertation that provides important context for one's research and writing. It is also a challenging organizational project. In this workshop, we will explore the purpose and conventions of literature reviews in the natural sciences. The workshop will include a discussion of the genre of literature reviews, why they are important, and how they can be organized. Our ultimate goal will be to equip graduate students with both an understanding of different approaches to literature reviews as well as strategies for summarizing the literature and organizing content.

What is academic freedom? Is it relevant in this day and age? What does it mean at a global institution like the University of Michigan? How does the internationalization of higher education affect it? What does it mean to those who hail from abroad? Does academic freedom globalize? How do scholars and students who move across the world attend to its intricacies, obligations, and limitations? These are some of the questions that we will attempt to answer as part of our conversation. Please join us!

The public is welcome!
Lunch will be served.
Please RSVP. This is optional but does help us ensure that we provide enough food for everyone.

Project Management Certification (March 24, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126016@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 24, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://tauber.umich.edu/events-training/project-management-certification/2019-03-24/project-management-certification-2019

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Dialogues in Contemporary Thought V | On Reading, will consist of two lectures. "Alphabetographies," by Prof. Cadava, will consider the photographic work of Susan Meiselas in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Kurdistan, and investigate her claim of being "attracted like a magnet to mass graves, destroyed villages, the missing." Prof. Cadava will then consider why photography is a privileged means of documenting violence, and the forms of resistance made available by it. "We have been misreading the camps," by Prof. Paloff, will re-evaluate the moral claims attached to camp literature, and propose an alternative ethics that embraces the reader's individual experience, and the community's memory of the past. The lectures are open to everyone. Questions - email: srdjan@umich.edu

Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

Anton Shiriaev, Professor, Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology will give a seminar titled, "Analytic and Computational Tools for Orbital Stabilization of Behaviors of Underactuated Mechanical Systems."

One of great advantages of model-based approaches in robotics is a possibility to separate the task of motion and trajectory planning from the task of a synthesis of feedback controller for stabilizing the preplanned behavior. This is quite different from the way humans learn motions where searches (trials) for new behaviors are embodied and accompanied by feedback actions. The talk will provide a discussion of the second assignment (feedback controller design) for the case when a feedback controller is requested to ensure a Poincare (or the same orbital) stability of a forced periodic solution of a nonlinear dynamical system. Geometric interpretations of the problem settings motivate introducing specific coordinates (transverse to the motion and along the motion) that help in defining math concepts and computational tools necessary for solving the stabilization task for smooth or hybrid nonlinear systems. The development is illustrated by examples of controlling gaits of walking robots and hand manipulations of passive objects with one or several passive degrees of freedom.

Refreshments will be served.

Skin Stories: Tess of the D’Urbervilles + Under the Skin (April 2, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62158 62158-15304540@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 2, 2019 4:00pm

Organized By: Nineteenth Century Forum

Please join the Nineteenth Century Forum for a public lecture given by Alicia Christoff, Assistant Professor of English at Amherst College.

It may seem strange to pair Jonathan Glazer’s unsettling science fiction film Under the Skin (2013), about an alien inhabiting the body of a woman (played by Scarlett Johannson), with Thomas Hardy’s much more terrestrial Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891). This talk, however, brings the film and novel together to show that Tess too is a skin story: a story of “beautiful feminine tissue,” bodily surfaces, phenomenological sensation, the male gaze, female agency, embodiment, and their violation – and an implicit story of racialization as well. The talk builds on Kaja Silverman’s foundational essay on female subjectivity and specularity in Tess by testing it against Under the Skin, which I argue eerily re-echoes many of the Victorian novel’s central images and tropes. More largely, I am interested in how the act of pairing Victorian and modern texts can provide Victorian studies scholars ways of engaging new work in critical theory – here, recent theorizations of race, blackness, and visuality – that is sometimes felt to be debarred by our objects of study.

The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and the University of Michigan Law School Present "The United States vs. Jackie Robinson"

In August 1944, Second Lieutenant Jack R. Robinson faced a court-martial at Camp Hood, Texas, related to two charges of insubordination of a superior officer following an incident on a bus in which he refused to obey Jim Crow-era laws.

Recently, Army historians have discovered the identity of an unheralded defense attorney who was instrumental in Jackie Robinson's acquittal. This attorney, Captain Robert H. Johnson, was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Michigan Law. The presentation will detail the African-American experience in WWII, analyze the court-martial, and discuss its effects on this American icon.

"If we are going to augment humanity with the machine, we need to do it in a way that doesn’t bring along our mistakes of the past."
— Gregory Simpson, Chief Technology Officer for Synchrony Financial

Through mobile phones, the Internet of Things, and web computing, every single day around the globe we create a quintillion bytes of data. Pairing that trove of data with enormous computational power, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making strides into every aspect of everyday living, from emails and targeted advertising, to healthcare and education. But with great power comes great responsibility. This Dissonance Event Series discussion will take a multidisciplinary look at the social implications of artificial intelligence and consider the promises and potential pitfalls we may look forward too.

In manufacturing, teams of robotics systems, working in coordination with one another, have led to dramatic increases in safety, efficiency, and profit. Collaborative teams of robotic vehicles working together in unstructured environments have the potential to yield similar gains in a variety of application areas including automatic inspection of underwater structures. However, autonomous collaboration in real-world environments is significantly more difficult than in the factory. The main reason for this is because in an unstructured environment, fundamental information such as the position of the robotic agent, its relationship to other agents, and a model of the robot's surroundings all have to be estimated by the robotic vehicle online, while their estimation can be simplified or engineered out of the problem in a structured one. This is further complicated by the fact that in underwater environments, failure of a navigation or perception algorithm that estimates the above quantities can result in significant damage or the loss of a vehicle. Moreover, existing algorithms for navigation and mapping in unstructured environments, tend to fail in the presence of outlier measurements, when given a bad initialization, or when using an inaccurate characterization of pose uncertainty.

In this thesis, we propose four methods that bring us closer to robust and consistent multi-agent autonomous inspection. The first is a method for handling outlier measurements when merging maps generated by two agents collaboratively inspecting a structure. The proposed method uses graph theory to enforce that the selected set of measurements are consistent with one another resulting in more consistent maps than existing methods. The second is an initialization agnostic method for aligning robot trajectories based on low-dimensional data. The third is a way of formulating the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem as a convex polynomial optimization problem. This enables us to guarantee that the trajectory estimated by the robotic vehicle is the true solution to the posed optimization problem. Finally, the fourth is method that uses Lie group theory and the Lie algebra to accurately characterize the uncertainty of jointly correlated poses. We evaluate the proposed methods and show that they outperform existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

We conclude with a discussion of "reliable autonomy" by describing a set of additional problems that need to be solved to enable reliable, large-scale, fully-autonomous, multi-agent inspection of underwater structures.

Joshua Mangelson is a Ph.D. Candidate in Robotics at the University of Michigan. His interests lie in the development of navigation, mapping, and perception algorithms that enable the design of reliable field robotic systems that can operate consistently in unstructured environments. He is especially interested in the development of large-scale multi-agent teams for autonomous inspection of underwater structures. He is the recipient of the IEEE ICRA Best Multi-Robot Paper Award and the IEEE OCEANS Best Poster Award both in 2018.
