Newnan-ELI Fall 2019 Undergraduate Sessions

Any interested international undergraduate students are invited to this free session, a conversation with Newnan and ELI about effectively procuring great letters of reference from faculty members. In this session, we will look together at what a solid letter of recommendation contributes to your application for grad school, an internship program, a scholarship, or other future endeavors you may be considering. We will identify what information to supply to your recommenders, and how to ask most politely (with a higher likelihood of "yes"). If time allows, we can practice making the ask with one another.

Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Department of History

We are excited to invite you to the Global Theories of Critique's second event of the academic year, with our theme for this year being "On the Failed and Marginal," focusing on the excluded and undermined from and in Euro-American histories. Challenging these histories or going against and beyond them demands an interrogation of the space from which we think, write, and act: the university and its various arms. Following this thinking, our second event will be a workshop on "Rethinking the University: On Discipline, Excellence, and Solidarity" with Professor Reginald Jackson, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 31st, 4-6 pm, room 1014 Tisch Hall, dinner included.

Professor Jackson is an Associate Professor of Pre-modern Japanese Literature at U of M's department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and has been long committed to thinking and practicing knowledge production in relation to solidarity with the marginalized and forgotten, within both the university's own space and its many outsides. As such, ahead of this event, we recommend reading Professor Jackson's recently published article, titled "Solidarity's Indiscipline: Regarding Miyoshi's Pedagogical Legacy," along with two theoretical pieces he is in engaging with. All readings are available here, and we recommend reading them in this order:

Readings, “The Idea of Excellence”
Jackson, “Solidarity’s Indiscipline: Regarding Miyoshi's Pedagogical Legacy”
Moten and Harney, “The University and the Undercommons” (optional)

Additionally, if you plan on attending this event, please RSVP here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd9zWJXZZnlGwM1-MIwVj7GNA5DZ_vnK-KvGxWzV26Is898Vw/viewform. We would also very much appreciate circulating this invite with any student, department or anyone else who might be interested in this event.

This event and the Global Theories of Critique project are part of a partnership between the University of Michigan and the American University in Cairo (AUC) focusing on Public Humanities in the Global South supported by a Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to AUC. Please get in touch with Hakem Al-Rustom (hakemaa@umich.edu) or Raya Naamneh (rnaamneh@umich.edu) with any questions.

Dia De La Muertos (November 1, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68327 68327-17046007@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 1, 2019 5:30pm
Location: School of Public Health Bldg I and Crossroads and Tower
Organized By: MENA ( Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

When sharing your writing, do you ever worry that your readers will see a list of sentences more than an elegant, logical flow of ideas? Do you receive feedback asking you to develop ideas further, or connect points together? Do you find yourself using the same logical connectors (e.g. however, similarly, as a result) over and over? In this workshop for graduate student writers, we will explore “information bridges” as a means to improve the organization, flow, and precision of documents you compose. We will work with examples from a range of academic disciplines, and provide tools to explore how information bridges tend to be constructed in your own corner of the academic writing world. Please bring something you've drafted, at any stage in your writing process, to try out editing strategies during the workshop.

Pizza will be provided.

This year is MUSES' 20th year anniversary, and our theme this year is Building a Legacy. On Nov 12th, we will have the pleasure to host a very special guest, Dr. Susan Montgomery, that truly represents what legacy looks like.

Doctor Susan Montgomery has had an important role in mentoring and advising students and student organizations throughout her career. She joined the University of Michigan in 1993 after a two-year postdoc developing educational modules following her PhD from Princeton University. She has taught many courses over the years including ‘Teaching Engineering’ which molds future engineering faculty. She has served as an advisor for undergraduate chemical engineering students, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and Habitat for Humanity. Recently she received the “Achievement Award” at the Willie Hobbs Moore Luncheon, given to an individual in STEM whose achievements encourage and inspire others to achieve their goals. She is in the process of transitioning to phased retirement, and certainly her contributions to our organization and our community at the University of Michigan will be forever remembered.

All are welcome!

Project Management Certification (November 17, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126019@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, November 17, 2019 11:00am
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://tauber.umich.edu/events-training/project-management-certification/2019-03-24/project-management-certification-2019

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Why President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel prejudiced its character and status (November 19, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69261 69261-17275358@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 19, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the U.S. embassy to the city has been universally condemned, as it is contrary to a well-established rule of international law stipulating that states must not recognize the fruits of conquest. While the United States chose to exercise its right of veto in the UN Security Council to block a resolution criticizing the presidential decision, the remaining members of the council, including close U.S. allies, criticized it. Similarly, the UN General Assembly, the European Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have all passed strongly worded resolutions saying that they would not recognize any changes to the pre-1967 borders, including in and around Jerusalem. This talk examines the legal standing of the U.S. decision in light of previous positions that the United States has historically adopted or endorsed.

U.S. Energy Transitions in the Trump Administration (November 21, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69079 69079-17242640@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 21, 2019 12:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

Please join us for the latest installment in the ELPP Lecture Series. Professor Alexandra Klass from the University of Minnesota Law School will discuss recent developments in U.S. energy law, policy, economics, and technology. Although President Trump and his cabinet Secretaries, particularly at the Interior Department, Energy Department, and Environmental Protection Agency, have announced dramatic policy shifts away from those pursued during the Obama Administration, the new administration’s ability to accomplish its goals is in some instances helped and in other instances hindered by existing federal and state laws as well as private sector technology and economic trends. Topics will include the shift away from the use of coal and toward natural gas and renewable energy in the electricity sector; the use of federal public lands to develop oil, natural gas, coal, wind, and solar energy; developments in technology and law associated with hydraulic facturing ("fracking"); and controversies over new oil and gas pipelines such as the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines.

This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Alexandra B. Klass teaches and writes in the areas of energy law, environmental law, natural resources law, tort law, and property law. Her recent scholarly work, published in many of the nation’s leading law journals, addresses regulatory challenges to integrating more renewable energy into the nation’s electric grid, transportation electrification, oil and gas transportation infrastructure, and the use of eminent domain for electric transmission lines and pipelines. She is a co-author of Energy Law: Concepts and Insights Series (Foundation Press 2017), Energy Law and Policy (West Academic Publishing 2d ed. 2018), Natural Resources Law: A Place-Based Book of Problems and Cases (Wolters Kluwer, 4th ed., 2018), and The Practice and Policy of Environmental Law (Foundation Press, 4th ed. 2017). Professor Klass was named the Stanley V. Kinyon Teacher of the Year for 2009-2010, and she served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2010-2012. She was a Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School in 2015. She is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and in prior years was the Julius E. Davis Professor of Law and the Solly Robins Distinguished Research Fellow.

Prior to her teaching career, Professor Klass was a partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Minneapolis, where she specialized in environmental law, natural resources, and land use matters. During her years in private practice from 1993-2004, she handled cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts involving contaminated property, wetlands, environmental review, mining, environmental rights, zoning, eminent domain, and environmental torts. She clerked for the Honorable Barbara B. Crabb, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin from 1992-1993.

In Russia, like everywhere, graduate students are not free from anxiety about their future career. Did I make the right choice by investing years into studying an obscure subject that few people are interested in? Am I really good at it? Will I get an academic job? And what else can you do with a Ph. D. in the humanities today? And if I get an academic job, will it pay enough for me to survive – and if not, how can I complement my income using my skills and knowledge?

Two distinguished scholars from top Russian graduate schools will tell us about exciting careers and opportunities that their graduate students have created for themselves. They include creating archive collections, developing web-based education projects, starting theater and ballet companies, advising city administration and many other endeavors. This event is specifically addressed to graduate students in the humanities who are thinking about expanding their professional horizon beyond academia

Organized By: Nineteenth Century Forum

Please join us for the second discussion of our Fall 2016 reading series called Reading the Romantics.

We will meet on December 5th from 12:30-1:30pm in Angell Hall 3154 to discuss the first chapter from Tilottama Rajan's *Romantic Narratives: Shelley, Hays, Godwin, and Wollstonecraft* (2010), called “The Trauma of Lyric: Shelley’s Missed Encounter with Poetry in Alastor.”

The chapter focuses on Shelley’s Alastor and some of the Wordsworth poems that influenced it — mostly the Lucy poems and The Ruined Cottage — in order to further Rajan’s larger claim about a Romantic ’narrativity’ that is, for her, separate from the novelistic, chronological plot structure (although not always excluded from it) and characterized by a certain openness, “worklessness,” and a “constant process of unmaking” that allows Shelley and other Romantic authors to oscillate between poetry and prose.

A light vegetarian lunch will be served. Please kindly RSVP to Ani Bezirdzhyan (abezirdz@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.

All are welcome to attend one or both events in the reading series.

In celebration of the release of the new book on Philadelphia’s Monument Lab project, CWPS presents project co-founder and book co-editor Dr. Paul M. Farber to lead a public conversation about monuments and public art. Participants will be asked to interrogate the notion of what constitutes art in the public realm, address current controversies of public art and the future place of monuments, and consider the question of what kinds of monuments we need today.

Paul M. Farber is Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Monument Lab and Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Public Art and Space at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Gone to the Village: Royal Funerary Rites for Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II
A Film by Kwasi Ampene
Executive Producer: Lester P. Monts

Thursday, January 16, 2020
7-8:30pm
East Quad Keene Theater
Free & Open to the public

Center for World Performance Studies hosts a screening of Gone to the Village, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Kwasi Ampene. Gone to the Village is a unique and powerful documentary, beautifully filmed, of the elaborate funerary rites for the Queen Mother of the Asante in Ghana. Leading Asante scholar Kwasi Ampene directs and narrates with the authority, gaze and sensitivity of a true insider, with stunning footage of the rich cultural traditions of the Asante people. Filmed on location in Kumase during the funeral, we witness traditions that have stubbornly and proudly resisted the onslaught of colonial rule and globalization.

Through the film, we learn about the history of the Asante as well as the central role of women in this matriarchal society. The scenes of dance, song, drumming, proverbs, and dress code are of exceptional and exquisite beauty, unprecedented in the African continent.

Kwasi Ampene is associate professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan (USA). He specializes in the rich musical traditions of the Akan people of Ghana, West Africa. He is the author of Female Song Tradition and the Akan Ghana (Ashgate); Engaging Modernity: Asante in the Twenty-First Century (Michigan Publishing); and the producer of the documentary film, Gone to the Village. His book manuscript, Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool, is under contract with Routledge Press.

Poster Presentations: Interacting Fluently with Your Audience (January 23, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70424 70424-17594476@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: English Language Institute

We often frame poster presentations at academic conferences and symposia as “easier” and less high-stakes than presenting a paper or participating in a panel, but poster presentations are about 10% presenting and 90% interacting with one’s “audience” of a few people crowded around the poster in a busy, noisy conference space. This type of Q & A can feel daunting, but can also be fun and interesting to prepare for with other graduate students. In this workshop, we will not be working on poster design: instead, we’ll work on strategies for fluent communication with visitors to your poster.

If you have a poster presentation coming up, bring a sketch or draft of your poster so that you can practice taking questions from others at the workshop. Otherwise, come ready to practice formulating and responding to typical question types in poster presentations.

Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Asian Pacific American Law Students Association

January 30th is the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. On February 19th, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, one of the most blatant forms of racial profiling in US history, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 American citizens and residents on the basis of being ethnically Japanese. Fred T. Korematsu was one of many who refused to be incarcerated, and was arrested. A national civil rights hero, Fred Korematsu appealed his case to the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, in 1983 his conviction was overturned in a coram nobis proceeding where Fred Korematsu addressed the court, saying, “I would like to see the government admit they were wrong, and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed, or color.”

In 2014 and again in 2019, the US government attempted to reopen the Fort Sill camp to incarcerate migrant children from Latin America; Fort Sill was previously used as a concentration camp where Native Americans and Japanese Americans were detained. In June 2017, ICE agents raided and arrested Iraqi families in the Detroit area, leading to the ACLU’s lawsuit, Hamama v. Adducci. Raids on Iraqi families have continued into 2019.

On January 30th, APALSA's Political Action Committee, in partnership with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and Stop Repeating History would like to invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066 by Jon Osaki, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by University of Michigan Law student Kevin Luong.

This event features incredible guest speakers: Dr. Karen Korematsu, Don Tamaki, Aamina Ahmed, Mary Kamidoi, and Michael Steinberg. Free and open to the public. Food from Curry On will be provided with RSVP: bit.ly/2tfDsnu

Making conversation can be one of the most challenging types of speaking to master in a second language. This can be particularly true with people in a position of authority, such as one’s research advisor, work supervisor, or future employer. In this workshop, we will explore conversation topics, turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider different types of conversations, such as seeming friendly and confident at a job interview or competent and insightful in a research group meeting.

Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

Join the Nineteenth Century Forum (NCF) for a paper workshop with Laura Korobkin, Associate Professor of English at Boston University.

This essay argues that the relationship between Bartleby and the lawyer-narrator in “Bartleby, the Scrivener” is Melville’s adaptive rewriting of the chiasmic trajectory of the Tom-Legree relationship in Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In both, a new, disempowered worker in a dehumanizing workplace quietly and respectfully refuses a series of commands, stunning and enraging the master, who interprets the refusals as a willful challenge to his personal mastery. In both texts, though urging no cause and calling none to disobey, the resistor becomes paradoxically empowered, the master disempowered; though the worker could end the conflict at any time by changing his behavior, he chooses not to, ultimately enabling his death in captivity. Challenging the established assumption that he responded to Stowe only with mocking disdain, the essay argues that Melville creatively engaged the novel’s unsentimental Legree section, giving his lawyer-narrator both Legree’s obsession with his own mastery and Shelby and St. Clare’s self-consoling view of their own benevolence. The essay questions Stowe’s absence from “Bartleby” criticism and argues that Melville extends Stowe’s suggestion of economic continuities between plantation and factory by triangulating the national system to include the white collar office.

Please email Sarah Van Cleve (srvc@umich.edu) to RSVP and receive a copy of the pre-circulated paper. All are welcome!

Investigating Neuromodulation as a Treatment for Female Sexual Dysfunction

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) affects millions of women worldwide. FSD has a significant impact on quality of life and interpersonal relationships. The prevalence of at least one form of sexual dysfunction is 40-45% of adult women with 12% of women experiencing sexually related personal distress, yet there is no clear treatment option for a wide range of FSD deficits with high efficacy and low side effects.

Neuromodulation techniques using electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves have the potential to treat some forms of FSD. In clinical trials of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) for bladder dysfunction, women have reported that their sexual dysfunction symptoms improved as well. Even though this effect has been observed clinically, very little research has been done to examine the mechanisms or the optimal method of treatment specifically for women with FSD. This thesis aims to bridge that gap by investigating neuromodulation as a treatment for FSD through both preclinical and clinical studies.

The first aim of this thesis is to investigate a possible mechanism of the improvement to sexual functioning in response to tibial nerve stimulation by evaluating vaginal blood flow responses in rats. In 16 ketamine-anesthetized female rats, the tibial nerve was stimulated for 30 minutes while vaginal blood perfusion was recorded with laser Doppler flowmetry. A novel signal analysis and quantification metric was developed for this analysis. I found that tibial nerve stimulation could drive prolonged increases in vaginal blood perfusion, typically after 20-30 minutes of stimulation. This result suggests that clinical neuromodulation may be improving FSD symptoms by increasing genital blood flow.

One question yet to be investigated by neuromodulation studies is whether tibial nerve stimulation could be an on-demand treatment for FSD, such as Viagra is for men, or is more appropriate as a long-term treatment with improvements over time, such as PTNS for bladder dysfunction. In this thesis I address this question by evaluating the sexual motivation and receptivity of female rats both immediately after a single stimulation session as well as after long-term, repeated stimulation sessions. I found that tibial nerve stimulation led to modest increases in sexual motivation in the short term, and larger increases in sexual receptivity in the long-term.

Lastly, this thesis evaluates a pilot clinical study of transcutaneous stimulation of the dorsal genital and posterior tibial nerves in nine women with FSD. The women received stimulation once a week for 12 weeks and their sexual functioning was measured using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) at baseline, after 6 weeks of stimulation, after 12 weeks of stimulation, and at 18 weeks (6 weeks after the last stimulation session). The average total FSFI score across all subjects significantly increased from baseline to each of the time points in the study. Significant FSFI increases were seen in the sub-domains of lubrication, arousal, and orgasm, each of which is related to genital arousal.

This thesis provides evidence that peripheral neuromodulation can be an effective treatment for FSD. The stimulation is likely driving increases in genital blood flow, with greater effects observed when stimulation is repeatedly applied over time. This treatment has the potential to help millions of women worldwide.

TODAY’S EVENT CANCELED: U-M Grad School Fair - Today, March 11

Due to our commitment to ensuring the safety of our students, broader U-M Community and attending grad school representatives, the LSA Opportunity Hub has decided to cancel this evening’s Grad School Fair.

We know there is a great interest in exploring and applying to grad schools, and we are extremely disappointed that you won’t be able to engage with program reps and current grad students as you intended. That access to people and information is invaluable. However, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel to ensure the safety of the broader community. We will work to identify alternative methods for connection to grad school information more broadly and will be sure to communicate those in a way that’s most effective over the coming weeks.

Please feel free to contact the LSA Opportunity Hub directly if you have any questions or concerns.

This lecture has been CANCELLED.

Please join us for the latest installment of the Environmental Law & Policy Program Lecture Series. Julia Olson, Executive Director and Chief Legal Counsel of Our Children's Trust, will speak about Juliana v. United States.

This event is free and open to the public.

Julia Olson graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, with a J.D. in 1997. For the first part of her 22-year career, Julia represented grassroots conservation groups working to protect the environment, organic agriculture, and human health. After becoming a mother, and realizing the greatest threat to her children and children everywhere was climate change, she focused her work on representing young people and elevating their voices on the issue that will most determine the quality of their lives and the well-being of all future generations. Julia founded Our Children’s Trust in 2010 to lead this strategic legal campaign on behalf of the world’s youth against governments everywhere. Julia leads Juliana v. the United States, the constitutional climate change case brought by 21 youth against the U.S. government for violating their Fifth Amendment rights to life, liberty, property, and public trust resources. Julia and OCT are recipients of the Rose-Walters Prize for Global Environmental Activism. She received the Kerry Rydberg Award for Environmental Activism in 2017 and is a member of Rachel's Network Circle of Advisors. To rejuvenate, Julia loves being high up in the mountains with her family and her dog or playing tunes on her ukulele with friends.

Watch for updates later this year.

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is pleased to present Natural History Collections: Drivers of Innovation, an exciting symposium about innovative and unconventional uses of biological collections across scientific disciplines. The symposium events will take place from the 13-15 March 2020, on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

When biologists think of natural history collections, most tend to think of taxonomy and systematics, yet many are unaware of the uses of biological collections beyond those traditional fields. These studies span the breadth of the tree of life and address broad subjects that span comparative genomics to bioengineering and climate change to historical pathogen dynamics, among many, many more. As stewards of one of the largest university-based biological collections in the world, we are in an extraordinary position to leverage our holdings of biological material from the last century or more. We envision this symposium as a way to showcase the often-unrealized opportunities and non-traditional avenues of research that our collections make possible to the entire scientific community, and emphasize some of the interdisciplinary ways in which our collections are being or could be used. We hope to foster a broader understanding and expanded use of an incomparable resource that the University of Michigan has cultivated for the past two hundred years.

The symposium will feature both established and novel uses of natural history collections across a wide range of taxonomic groups, systems, and time. Our goal is to create a program with contributions from all corners of ecology and evolutionary biology. The program will include two keynote talks by senior speakers and additional talks by early-career speakers.

Abstract: Video understanding has advanced quite a long way in the past decade, accomplishing tasks including low-level segmentation and tracking that study objects as pixel-level segments or bounding boxes to more high-level activity recognition or classification tasks that classify a video scene to a categorical action label. Despite the progress that has been made, much of this work remains a proxy for an eventual task or application that requires a holistic view of the video, such as objects, actions, attributes, and other semantic components. In this defense, we argue that language could deliver the required holistic representation. It plays a significant role in video understanding by allowing machines to communicate with humans and to understand our requests, as shown in tasks such as text-to-video search engine, voice-guided robot manipulation, to name a few. Our language-driven video understanding focuses on two specific problems: video description and visual grounding. What marks our viewpoint different from prior literature is twofold. First, we propose a bottom-up structured learning scheme by decomposing long video into individual procedure steps and represent each one with a description. Second, we propose to have both explicit (i.e., supervised) and implicit (i.e., weakly-supervised and self-supervised) grounding between words and visual concepts which enables interpretable modeling of the two spaces.

Brain pathologies including stroke and cancer are a major cause of death and disability. Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for roughly 12% of all strokes in the US with approximately 200,000 new cases per year. ICH is characterized by the rupture of vessels resulting in bleeding and clotting inside the brain. The presence of the clot causes immediate damage to surrounding brain tissue via mass effect with delayed toxic effects developing in the days following the hemorrhage. This leads ICH patients to high mortality with a 40% chance of death within 30 days of diagnosis and motivates the need to quickly evacuate the clot from the brain. Craniotomy surgery and other minimally invasive methods using thrombolytic drugs are common procedures to remove the clot but are limited by factors such as morbidity and high susceptibility to rebleeding, which ultimately result in poor clinical outcomes.

Histotripsy is a non-thermal ultrasound ablation technique that uses short duration, high amplitude rarefactional pulses (>26 MPa) delivered via an extracorporeal transducer to generate targeted cavitation using the intrinsic gas nuclei existing in the target tissue. The rapid and energetic bubble expansion and collapse of cavitation create high stress and strain in tissue at the focus that fractionate it into an acellular homogenate. This dissertation presents the role of histotripsy as a novel ultrasound technology with potential to address the need for an effective transcranial therapy for ICH and other brain pathologies.

The first part of this work investigates the effects of ultrasound frequency and focal spacing on transcranial clot liquefaction using histotripsy. Histotripsy pulses were delivered using two 256-element hemispherical transducers of different frequency (250 and 500 kHz) with 30-cm aperture diameters. Liquefied clot was drained via catheter and syringe in the range of 6-59 mL in 0.9-42.4 min. The fastest rate was 16.6 mL/min. The best parameter combination was λ spacing at 500 kHz, which produced large liquefaction through 3 skullcaps (~30 mL) with fast rates (~2 mL/min). The temperature-rise through the 3 skullcaps remained below 4°C.

The second part addresses initial safety concerns for histotripsy ICH treatment through investigation in a porcine ICH model. 1.75-mL clots were formed in the frontal lobe of the brain. The centers of the clots were liquefied with histotripsy 48 h after formation, and the content was either evacuated or left within the brain. A control group was left untreated. Histotripsy was able to liquefy the core of clots without direct damage to the perihematomal brain tissue. An average volume of 0.9 ± 0.5 mL (~50%) was drained after histotripsy treatment. All groups showed mild ischemia and gliosis in the perihematomal region; however, there were no deaths or signs of neurological dysfunction in any groups.

The third part presents the development of a novel catheter hydrophone method for transcranial phase aberration correction and drainage of the clot liquefied with histotripsy. A prototype hydrophone was fabricated to fit within a ventriculostomy catheter. Improvements in focal pressure of up to 60% were achieved at the geometric focus and 27%-62% across a range of electronic steering locations. The sagittal and axial -6-dB beam widths decreased from 4.6 to 2.2 mm in the sagittal direction and 8 to 4.4 mm in the axial direction, compared to 1.5 and 3 mm in the absence of aberration. The cores of clots liquefied with histotripsy were readily drained via the catheter.

The fourth part focuses on the development of a preclinical system for translation to human cadaver ICH models. A 360-element, 700 kHz hemispherical array with a 30 cm aperture was designed and integrated with an optical tracker surgical navigation system. Calibrated simulations of the transducer suggest a therapeutic range between 48 – 105 mL through the human skull with the ability to apply therapy pulses at pulse-repetition-frequencies up to 200 Hz. The navigation system allows real-time targeting and placement of the catheter hydrophone via a pre-operative CT or MRI.

The fifth and final part of this work extends transcranial histotripsy therapy beyond ICH to the treatment of glioblastoma. This section presents results from an initial investigation into cancer immunomodulation using histotripsy in a mouse glioblastoma model. The results suggest histotripsy has some immunomodulatory capacity as evidenced by a 2-fold reduction in myeloid derived suppressor cells and large increases in interferon-γ concentrations (3500 pg/mL) within the brain tumors of mice treated with histotripsy.
