This workshop will not be held in person but instead will be offered using Zoom technology. Please be sure to check your email the morning of the online workshop for the link to participate in the program.
Have you often succeeded at an academic task even though you were afraid you wouldn’t do well? Do you dread others evaluating your work? Do you tend to remember incidents when you haven’t done your best more than those when you have? Thoughts such as these are the hallmark of imposter syndrome thinking. Imposter syndrome thinking can be compounded for those from underrepresented populations who may also be subject to discrimination and situations that prime stereotype threat. This interactive session will share insights from the scholarship on imposter syndrome and related psychological constructs—including stereotype threat and performance anxiety—and provide strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome.
This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/88wGV.

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

A Data Scientist Plays Games (April 16, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74087 74087-18510444@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 16, 2020 12:00pm
Location:
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

This event will be hosted online via Zoom

A Data Scientist Plays Games:  This is a presentation broken down into two parts.  The first is how to use mathematical techniques to analyze classic card and board games, and the second part is how data science techniques were applied in real life to support games on the Facebook platform.  This presentation is about 1.5 hours, with a target audience probably suited to CS/software engineering.  It’s light-hearted and fun.

Nick Berry, a native of the UK, has lived in Seattle for the last 25 years. He was educated as a rocket scientist and aircraft designer, graduating with a Masters Degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

Upon graduation, he joined a group of friends to form a software company, specializing in electronic mapping and route planning. This company was grown organically, and earned an unprecedented number of awards and accolades, including the British Design Award and The Queen’s Award for Technology, presented by Her Majesty in 1991. In 1994 Nick was recognized by the Sunday Times Magazine as “One of the top 50 entrepreneurs of the decade”. In 1994, after the company had grown to 50 people worldwide, it was sold to Microsoft.

Nick moved to America with the sale and spent 14 years working for Microsoft, the last ten of which were in the Microsoft Casual Game team. During his tenure, he filed a variety of patents for Microsoft, and represented Microsoft at various conferences and speaking engagements.

After leaving Microsoft, he joined RealNetworks to work as the GM of customer analytics for their games division, GameHouse.

After GameHouse, Nick spent five years as a Data Scientist, working for Facebook in their Seattle office.

In addition to his engineering expertise, Nick is passionate about data privacy and holds a CIPP qualification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He is an active member of the privacy community and speaks at various events about the legal and ethical aspects of data collection, use, and destruction.

In July 2013, Nick gave a TEDx talk about Passwords and the Internet, and in 2015 was nominated by GeekWire as Geek-of-the-week. In 2019 he was recognized as one of the 50 over 50 in the video games industry.

CANCELED: MIPSE Seminar | Bringing Cosmic Shock Waves Down to Earth (April 22, 2020 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72596 72596-18024699@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 22, 2020 3:30pm
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Abstract:
As a fundamental process for converting kinetic to thermal energy, collisionless shocks are ubiquitous throughout the heliosphere and astrophysical systems, from Earth’s magnetosphere to supernova remnants. While these shocks have been studied for decades by spacecraft, telescopes, and numerical simulations, there remain key open questions in shock physics, such as: How do shocks accelerate particles to extremely high energies? or How are particles heated across a shock? Laboratory experiments thus provide a significant opportunity to both complement spacecraft and remote sensing observations with well-controlled and well-diagnosed datasets, and to help benchmark numerical simulations that bridge laboratory and astrophysical systems.
In this talk, I will discuss recent results from experiments and simulations on the formation and evolution of collision-less shocks created through the interaction of a supersonic laser-driven magnetic piston and magnetized ambient plas-ma. Through advanced diagnostics a fast, high-Mach-number shock is observed. Direct probing of particle velocity distributions reveals the coupling between the piston and ambient plasmas that is a key step in forming magnetized collisionless shocks. Particle-in-cell simulations further detail the shock formation process, the role of collisionality, and the dynamics of multi-ion-species ambient plasmas. I will also discuss how this experimental platform complements spacecraft missions and can allow novel investigations of shock heating and particle acceleration.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Schaeffer is an Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Astro-physical Sciences at Princeton University. He received his BA in Physics at Cornell University and his PhD in Physics from UCLA, and did his postdoctoral work at Princeton in high-energy-density laboratory astrophysics. Dr. Schaeffer has extensive experience in experiments involving mag-netized laser plasmas, collisionless shocks, and magnetic reconnection, and a keen interest in bridging laboratory and astronomical observations. He also has expertise in a wide range of di-agnostics, including Thomson scattering, refractive imaging, proton radiography, and x-ray im-aging. He has authored dozens of papers and has presented at numerous conferences around the world.

CANCELED: MIPSE Seminar | Journey to the Sun (April 29, 2020 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70795 70795-17957293@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 29, 2020 3:30pm
Location: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Abstract:
NASA Heliophysics research studies a vast system stretching from the Sun to Earth to far beyond the edge of the planets. Studying this system – much of it driven by the Sun’s constant outpouring of solar wind – not only helps us understand fundamental infor-mation about how the universe works, but also helps protect our technology and astronauts in space. NASA seeks knowledge of near-Earth space, because, when extreme, space weather can interfere with our com-munications, satellites and power grids. The study of the Sun and space can also teach us more about how stars contribute to the habitability of planets through-out the universe.
Mapping out this interconnected system requires a holistic study of the Sun’s influence on space, Earth and other planets. NASA has a fleet of spacecraft stra-tegically placed throughout our heliosphere – from Parker Solar Probe at the Sun observing the very start of the solar wind, to satellites around Earth, to the far-thest human-made object, Voyager, which is sending back observations on interstellar space. Each mission is positioned at a critical, well-thought out vantage point to observe and understand the flow of energy and particles throughout the solar system, and all helping us untagle the effects of the star we live with.

About the speaker:
Dr. Nicola Fox is the Heliophysics Division Director in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. Until August 2018, Dr. Fox worked at the Applied Physics Lab at the Johns Hopkins University where she was the Chief Scientist for Heliophysics and the project scientist for NASA’s Parker Solar Probe. Dr. Fox served as the deputy project scientist for the Van Allen Probes, and the operations scientist for the International Solar Terrestrial Physics program. Fox received her BS in Physics and PhD in Space and Atmospheric Physics from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. She received an MS in Telematics and Satellite Communications from the University of Surrey.

Moved Virtually - 25th Annual Lavender Graduation (April 30, 2020 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73431 73431-18217180@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 30, 2020 12:00am
Location: Trotter Multicultural Center
Organized By: Spectrum Center

The Spectrum Center is eager to announce that we have found a way to celebrate all LGBTQ+ graduates in a new format!

The Annual Lavender Graduation, also referred to as LavGrad, is a celebration to honor LGBTQ graduates of the University of Michigan. Established by Ronni Sanlo in 1995, the University of Michigan was the first commemorative event of its kind celebrated at an institution of higher learning. This commencement ceremony acknowledges the contributions of any graduates from any school/college at the University and of any academic level. Due to COVID-19 and the University of Michigan’s suspension of all in-person commencements, the day-of ceremony itself has been canceled. However, the Spectrum Center still has opportunities to highlight this year’s graduating class.

All LGBTQ+ students who graduated in Fall 2019 or are set to graduate Winter or Summer 2020 are invited to register as a graduate. Those who register before the EXTENDED deadline of Sunday, April 12th at 11:59 pm will receive a free rainbow 2020 tassel, a lavender cord, and an optional Lavender Degree and optional printed program. Additionally, students will be able to select the ways they would like to be recognized or opt-out of public recognition. The celebratory page will be posted April 30th to coincide with the intended celebration date.

The Spectrum Center is pleased to announce that Ronni Sanlo, Founder of Lavender Graduation in 1995, will be the Keynote Speaker for the Lavender Graduation ceremony and be the recipient of an Honorary Lavender Degree. Playwright, author and LGBT historian Dr. Ronni Sanlo is a well-known keynote speaker at colleges and universities around the country. Ronni speaks not only from her perspective as a higher education/student affairs professor, LGBT center director, dean of students, and faculty in residence but also from her personal life experiences. In lieu of a public speech, Ronni will be providing a pre-recorded video and her remarks in text to be posted along with the 2020 graduating class.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are the most prominent group of optically active van-der-Waals materials and show promising properties such as the potential for high carrier mobility, atomic thickness, and ultrafast charge transfer. The implications of fast charge and energy transfer for optoelectronic, energy-, and light-harvesting applications has made this group of materials one of the most well-studied ones over the past years. However, previous work employed techniques not uniquely suited to study the processes in these materials, especially with respect to the temporal resolution, yielding only insufficient information about the physics of the system.

In this talk, I will give an overview about the technique called multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) that we employ to study the charge and energy transfer in a MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructure. Using this technique, we are able to infer information about the dominance of charge transfer on a sub-picosecond time-scale in these samples, the underlying time-scales of other processes occurring in the material such as fast decay into dark states, and the high spatial inhomogeneity of these dynamics. We are also able to clearly distinguish between energy and charge transfer dynamics. I will explain how our implementation of MDCS can be combined with existing imaging techniques and how we plan to use this in the future to advance the study of these promising materials for electronic applications.

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Holographic Tests of Quantum Gravity (June 18, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74945 74945-19110565@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 18, 2020 12:00pm

String theory provides the most consistent framework for quantum gravity and to investigate the quantum effects on gravity within this theory, I focus on the holographic principle. The most successful realization of holography is the duality relating certain quantum theories and gravity theories. This duality gives a dictionary translating concepts from one theory to that of the other, providing a new methodology to study physical systems that was not possible prior to this correspondence. I utilize the strength of holography by developing tools for string theory using quantum theory guidance. It is in this setting that new methods are established for gravity to match with the expected quantum prediction. I will discuss some recent examples where the expressions I obtain on the gravity side agree with the quantum side, providing another check on holography while further deepening our understanding of string theory.

WHAT’S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN? WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS.
Sure you have limited experience, you’re young, new to the workforce, you’re not even sure what you want to do when you grow-up--- I say bring it. Bring what? Bring it—you, your ideas, your passion your creativity your thoughts that set your mind on fire--- that’s what you need to bring— can it be daunting, or intimidating, or even scary- hell yes it can—but what’s the worst that can happen?

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | The Blending Problem in Cosmology (July 9, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75127 75127-19277397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 9, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Physics

The mass distribution in our universe gravitationally distorts light from galaxies, making galaxy shapes a powerful probe of cosmology. Visually overlapping galaxies along the line of sight, a problem known as blending, will negatively impact shape measurements taken from the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), the most powerful ground-based optical cosmology survey to date.

In this talk, I will discuss the blending problem in the context of LSST and the challenges that it represents for the collaboration. Then, I will survey state-of-the-art solutions that have been developed via algorithms known as deblenders. COVID-19 has both immediate and long-term consequences for the health and well-being of Americans. Older adults are not only at higher risk for severe illness from the disease, but may also be especially vulnerable to social and emotional harms associated with the pandemic. In this ISR Insights talk, Jessica Finlay (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Social Environment and Health, ISR) and Lindsay Kobayashi (Assistant Professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, School of Public Health) will discuss insights from the COVID-19 Coping Study of nearly 7,000 adults aged 55+ from across the country. The talk will share participants’ perspectives and diverse experiences during the first upswing of the pandemic, including major sources of stress and ways of coping.

If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu.

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Eliminating Artifacts in Astronomical Images Using Deep Learning (July 23, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75256 75256-19379437@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 23, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Physics

Polarization measurements done using Imaging Polarimeters such as the Robotic Polarimeter are very sensitive to the presence of artifacts in images. Artifacts can range from internal reflections in a telescope to satellite trails that could contaminate an area of interest in the image. With the advent of wide-field polarimetry surveys, it is imperative to develop methods that automatically flag artifacts in images. In this paper, we implement a Convolutional Neural Network to identify the most dominant artifacts in the images. We find that our model can successfully classify sources with 98% true positive and 97% true negative rates. Such models, combined with transfer learning, will give us a running start in artifact elimination for near-future surveys like the Wide Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP). This work was done at the Astronomy department of the California Institute of Technology in the US with Dr. Ashish Mahabal, Prof. Anthony Readhead, Prof. Kieran Cleary, Prof. A. N. Ramaprakash and Dr. Gina Panapoulou. This was a collaborative work with the PASIPHAE group which stands for Polar-Areas Stellar-Imaging in Polarization High-Accuracy Experiment. Pasiphae is an international collaboration between the University of Crete, Caltech, the South African Astronomical Observatory, the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and the University of Oslo. This experiment aims to map, with unprecedented accuracy, the polarization of millions of stars at areas of the sky away from the Galactic plane, in both the Northern and the Southern hemispheres.

The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

Panelists:
• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan
• Matthew Countryman, Afroamerican and African History, American Culture, History, University of Michigan
• Matthew Lassiter, History, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Michigan
• William D. Lopez, Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan

Moderator:
• Mrinalini Sinha, History, University of Michigan

This event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Dark matter is a mysterious substance that pervades the universe and affects its evolution via gravity. The particulate nature of dark matter is unknown, although several theoretical candidates have been proposed. One such candidate is the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), which several experiments over the last decade have sought to discover. Among the forthcoming generation of these experiments is LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), an underground tonne-scale detector employing liquid xenon to search for faint dark matter interactions. This talk will go over the operating principle of the detector, its sensitivity to physics beyond WIMPs, hardware challenges to achieve these science goals, and the simulation and analysis tasks in preparation for LZ's first data.
