Healing Justice As Building Cultural Resilience (October 10, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68165 68165-17020448@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 10, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Semester in Detroit

Our Healing Justice as Building Cultural Resistance workshop series is back! Last fall, SiD faculty member Diana Seales coordinated 5 workshops for students and community members to learn about, discuss, and practice healing justice. This time, the series is back with some updates and an additional workshop.

All workshops are free and open to the public and include a light dinner.

If you are coming from Ann Arbor as a registered student or someone who wants to drop in for one or more workshops, please email Craig Regester (regester@umich.edu) to confirm your transportation.

SERIES INFORMATION:

Cultural organizing places culture at the center of an organizing strategy. It can be done to unite people through the humanity of culture and the democracy of participation. This series explores the ways in which healing justice, creativity and arts enhance cultural organizing through a series of unique workshops led by Detroiters that are at the forefront of this movement. This type of creative organizing empowers communities to come together in celebration of culture while developing valuable skills that challenge power and oppression.

Healing Justice is woven through each of the workshops. Dr. Page of the Kindred Healing Justice Collective (often attributed with coining the phrase) describes Healing Justice as identifying how we can holistically respond to and intervene on generational trauma and violence, and to bring collective practices that can impact and transform the consequences of oppression on our bodies, hearts and minds.”

Additionally, this series is led entirely by indigenous community members and activists. The practice of ritual, which is deeply tied to healing justice and cultural organizing, often comes at the risk of cultural appropriation. As we try to create cross-cultural community healing spaces, it is vital to understand Anishinaabe culture as we stand on their land. This series will struggle with that idea, with the challenge of ritual in the modern era, and will encourage people not familiar with healing justice to get outside their comfort zones and confront the ways in which the destruction of indigenous healing practices and colonization are deeply interconnected.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

October 3rd: Dreams as Empowerment - using dreams for self-healing, transformation, and intuition
Workshop by Zoë Villegas of Gemineye Tarot

October 10th: How to Build Community Through Active Story Sharing and Movement - Dress comfortably and be ready to move: this workshop will include aspects of traditional as well as modern interpretations of Great Lakes Indigenous Dances
Workshop by Christy Giizigad of Aadizookaan

October 17: Herbs & Ceremony - how ritual can be used for personal and activist self-care
Workshop by Adela Nieves Martinez of Healing by Choice!

November 7th: Using Tarot and Folk Magic as Defense Against Colonialized Structures and Oppression
Workshop by Zoë and Alejandra Villegas of Gemineye Tarot

November 14th: Understanding Anishinaabe Healing Practice to Create Cross-Cultural Community Healing Spaces
Workshop by Chantel Henry of American Indian Health and Family Services

November 21st: Beat back the oppressors! Electronic recordings, learning, and sharing. Learn the basics of beat making and ‘chop’ while discussing music and art as a form of resistance.
Workshop by Sacramento Knoxx of Aadizookaan

CBT Group for Social and Performance Anxiety (October 15, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67160 67160-16909303@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

Registration is open for the University Psychological Clinic’s fall CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) group for adults with social or performance anxiety. People with social anxiety often worry about seeming incompetent, unintelligent, or awkward in social situations. Symptoms like heart pounding, shaking, sweating, dry mouth, or “blanking out” are common symptoms. People with social anxiety may continue to worry about how they came across to others long after the event is over. This group can help you build skills to counter the effects.

If you think social anxiety is negatively affecting your relationships, your work, or your overall mental health, this group might be the next step for you. Clinicians at the Psychological Clinic use evidence-based group therapy to help participants learn to identify and shift unhealthy thinking patterns. You will build coping skills and increase confidence in a supportive environment and at your own pace. The group will meet on Tuesdays, beginning October 15, 2019, for eight weeks, with an additional follow-up booster session a month after the program’s conclusion.

If you think this group is the right fit for you, call the Psych Clinic at (734) 764-3471 to schedule an individual, preliminary screening. This screening will take 30-60 minutes. Some insurance is accepted to cover the cost. Without insurance the screening cost is $20. This screening allows you to work with a clinician to determine if the group is right for you.

Please send referrals by faxing a brief treatment summary or evaluation report to the Psychological Clinic, attention Michelle Van Etten Lee, Ph.D. The fax number is (734) 764-8128.

CBT Group for Social and Performance Anxiety (October 22, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67160 67160-16909304@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 5:30pm

Serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease, and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers. Author of the title book, Jo Marchant, explores the vast potential of the mind’s ability to heal, lays out its limitations, and explains how we can make use of these findings in our own lives.
Amazon Review: “With clarity and compassion, Marchant points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.” So, let’s bring our open minds and our healthy skepticism to examine this fascinating look into the possible future of medicine. Mike Murray, instructor, is a Clinical Psychologist. This Study Group is for those 50 and over and meets Mondays, 10:00 am-12:00 pm on November 11 - December 16.

Medical Ethics on the Border: A Look at Immigration Detention (November 13, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68151 68151-17018323@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 4:00pm
Location: University Hospitals
Organized By: Eisenberg Family Depression Center

The community is invited to join the Michigan Medicine Department of Psychiatry for the 24th Annual Waggoner Lecture on Ethics & Values in Medicine. The title of this year’s talk is “Medical Ethics on the Border: A Look at Immigration Detention.” The talk will be presented by Pamela K. McPherson, M.D., FAPAon Wednesday, November 13 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in Ford Auditorium at University Hospital.

Pamela K. McPherson, M.D., FAPA is a medical doctor triple-boarded in general, child and adolescent, and forensic psychiatry. She is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Shreveport Behavioral Health Clinic, a gratis assistant professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport, and a mental health subject matter expert for the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. McPherson focuses her research on the mental health of justice-involved youth as well as conditions of juvenile confinement, and consults for the U.S. government and non-profits on mental health services for justice-involved youth.

In 2018, she and colleague Dr. Scott A. Allen exposed the serious health risks to children who are separated from their parents and detained as part of the U.S. administration’s zero tolerance policy at the southern border. Learn more about their work from this CNN article published in May: These doctors risked their careers to expose the dangers children face in immigrant family detention.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. McPherson to our campus in November for this esteemed lectureship,” said Debra A. Pinals, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry and director of the Program in Psychiatry, Law and Ethics at U-M and chair of the Waggoner Lectureship Committee. “Dr. McPherson has incredible insight into the conditions of immigrants entering the United States. She could not be better suited to address our campus for this lecture devoted to medical ethics and values in medicine.”

The University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry established the Raymond W. Waggoner Lectureship on Ethics and Values in Medicine in 1996. This lectureship was created in honor of the late Dr. Waggoner, emeritus professor and past chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, who throughout his career and to all who knew him, exemplified the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

The lectureship is an annual event to recognize Dr. Waggoner’s enormous contributions to the Michigan Medicine medical center and to the profession, and to promulgate his interest in medical ethics.

Join us on Tuesday, November 19, at 6 p.m., for an exciting Dissonance event: Protecting Patient Privacy in Big Data. This panel discussion will take place in the Vandenberg Room, on the second floor of the Michigan League on the UM-Ann Arbor campus. There is no charge for this event and no need to register.

Electronic health records, connected medical devices, health tracking applications, and more have led to a tidal wave of medical data. How this data is being used to transform patient care, improve care quality and decrease healthcare costs, however, is not always evident. Michigan Medicine physicians and legal scholars will explore how medical care will change as digital health platforms evolve, the legal ramifications we might have to navigate, and the privacy and ethical issues that are unfolding today.

CBT Group for Social and Performance Anxiety (November 26, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67160 67160-16909309@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 5:30pm

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Group (January 23, 2020 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70901 70901-17760217@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 5:30pm

Organized By: University Psychological Clinic

The Psychological Clinic offers Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy group as a treatment for people with depression as well as other mental health conditions. While the chemical and physical aspects of depression and other mental health disorders are far more complex than just feeling down, current research supports a cognitive approach as a way to change patterns of brain functioning and build resilience in people struggling with chronic depression.
The program uses a combination of cognitive therapy and mindfulness to help participants form new, healthier modes of thought. MBCT initiates a cognitive change that helps clients move past events that have the potential to trigger relapse. Participants learn how to view their thoughts without judgment.
MBCT is about equipping participants with the ability to regulate one’s own thoughts and moods and to put new skills into practice in the way they are most useful to each client. MBCT helps flip the script in a way, empowering participants, helping them step into a well-fortified position and giving them the tools and the knowledge to help themselves at any stage of life.
The next session is scheduled to begin January 23, 2020 and runs for eight weeks. Participants will meet weekly, on Thursdays from 5-7:30 p.m.
If you are interested in attending or referring a potential group participant, please contact the Psychological Clinic to begin the process. Call (734) 764-3471 and leave a message with the best time to reach you and we will be in touch within one to two business days to schedule a screening.

This workshop will provide an overview of the basics of this powerful tool, introduce ways to incorporate both formal and informal mindful meditation practices into daily life, and a guided mindful meditation experience. In addition, every Wednesday from 12:15 – 12:45 pm, CEW+ holds guided mindful meditation sessions providing a weekly opportunity to practice in a supportive space.

Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been clinically proven to be at least as effective as drugs for depression - in other words, it works! And it's not just for depression; it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of this frantic world.
It promotes the kind of happiness and peace that gets into our bones. Mindfulness reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion.
We're going to be using the book "Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World" by Mark Williams and Danny Pennman.
This will be a six-week program. The class will be partly lecture, but you can look forward to lively discussions.
Mike Murray, a Clinical Psychologist, has taught mindfulness classes for OLLI for over ten years. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Wednesdays February 5 through March 11.

Call (734) 764-3471 and leave a message with the best time to reach you and we will be in touch within one to two business days to schedule a screening.

oin Wolverines for Life at Pierpont Commons to help recruit bone marrow donors. This drive was established to help find a match for Natalia, an 8-year-old girl who may need a bone marrow donor soon.

Natalia was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in August 2019. She has been hospitalized for most of the last few months at University of Michigan’s Mott Children’s Hospital, where she is undergoing chemotherapy. She has about 4 more months to go. Natalia has a very positive attitude. She loves to read (especially Percy Jackson and Warriors books) and do craft projects. Her nurses and doctors love her!

Hopefully chemo will be enough to cure Natalia’s condition. If it isn’t, she will need a bone marrow transplant. As of now, there are NO full matches in the bone marrow registries worldwide. Her 13-year-old brother and her twin sister are not matches.

Natalia’s mixed-race background – Cantonese, Latina (Salvadoran), and white (Dutch/German) – makes it especially hard to find a match. Her bone marrow HLA markers are predominantly Cantonese/white.

ISR Reads Fall Book Selection: A Terrible Thing to Waste; Environmental Racism and It’s Assault on the American Mind

1:00pm to 3pm
ISR Thompson 1430ABCD

Virtual Live Stream Presentation with: Join us at ISR or online at https://bluejeans.com/569501572

In support of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts at the University of Michigan and the Institute of Social Research and School of Public Health we are excited to partner in bringing an award-winning science writer Harriet A. Washington.

Washington will join us via livestream to discuss her book "A Terrible Thing to Waste: Environmental Racism and Its Assault on the American Mind."

Ms. Washington adds her incisive analysis to the environmental discussion presenting an argument that IQ is a biased and flawed metric, one that it is useful for tracking cognitive damage. She takes apart the spurious notion of intelligence as an inherited trait, using copious data that instead point to a different cause of the reported African American-white IQ achievement gap.

The book explains that environmental racism - a confluence of racism and other institutional factors that relegate marginalized communities to living and working near sites of toxic waste, pollution, and insufficient sanitation services is terrible for the brain. Ms. Washington investigates heavy metals, neurotoxins, deficient prenatal care, bad nutrition, and even pathogens as chief agents influencing intelligence to explain why communities of color are disproportionately affected -- and what can be done to remedy this devastating problem.

Harriet A. Washington has been the Shearing Fellow at the University of Nevada's Black Mountain Institute, a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, and a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at
Tuskegee University. She is the author of Deadly Monopolies, Infectious Madness, and Medical Apartheid, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN/Oakland Award, and the American Library Association Black Caucus
Nonfiction Award.

Postponed - Why I Fight (March 26, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71813 71813-17888049@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 26, 2020 7:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

This event has been postponed. Details TBA.

Why I Fight, a theatrical adaptation of the 2019 Michigan Quarterly Review novelette by James Munro Leaf, dramatizes the perils of being defined by a mental illness and being caught in the psychiatric system. It probes the presumption of labels and the complex dynamics of power, dehumanization, and abuse in clinical settings. Creative director Gillian Eaton and actor Malcolm Tulip, faculty of the U-M School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, engage several of their students in this production at the Residential College’s Keene Theater (dates TBA).

Based on collaboration with the staff at the U-M Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program and other University colleagues, a series of panels on mental illness and the arts follow each theatrical performance. Panelists will expand on themes in Why I Fight and invite conversation with audience members. Individuals and family members who live with mental illness; U-M faculty conducting psycho-social, public health, and biomedical research; mental health practitioners and community advocates, including the arts community, will explore the roles of creativity and nature for healing. The panels will be moderated by Dr. Melvin McInnis, Director of the Prechter Program, and other U-M mental health experts. A catered reception and information tables for resources in the arts and mental wellness organizations accompany each performance. (Please see the full list of panelists for more information).

A series of associated events and workshops, free and open to the public, are scheduled for the weekend.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

ISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.

Wednesday, July 15, 1pm
https://umich.zoom.us/j/92804413123

COVID-19 has both immediate and long-term consequences for the health and well-being of Americans. Older adults are not only at higher risk for severe illness from the disease, but may also be especially vulnerable to social and emotional harms associated with the pandemic. In this ISR Insights talk, Jessica Finlay (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Social Environment and Health, ISR) and Lindsay Kobayashi (Assistant Professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, School of Public Health) will discuss insights from the COVID-19 Coping Study of nearly 7,000 adults aged 55+ from across the country. The talk will share participants’ perspectives and diverse experiences during the first upswing of the pandemic, including major sources of stress and ways of coping.

If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu.

The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

Panelists:
• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan
• Matthew Countryman, Afroamerican and African History, American Culture, History, University of Michigan
• Matthew Lassiter, History, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Michigan
• William D. Lopez, Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan

Moderator:
• Mrinalini Sinha, History, University of Michigan

This event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

On July 30, 2020, Big Hearts for Seniors (BHS) will present Big Hearted Stories: Experiences of Aging virtually. This engaging program will provide a platform for talented storytellers to share their powerful, true life experiences. These compelling stories will bring laughter, inspiration, and maybe even a few tears.

Big Hearts for Seniors was formed to support critical services for our aging community members. This collaborative is comprised of five community non-profit programs serving older adults: Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Silver Club Memory Programs, and the Turner Senior Wellness Program. These programs help seniors access home-delivered meals, sustainable housing options, support to remain independent, learning in retirement opportunities, relief from social isolation, and programs for those with dementia.

Since 2006, Big Hearts for Seniors has raised sponsor support funds and generous community donations through various events including the Big House/Big Heart races, silent auctions, and documentary film screenings. All funds raised are used to provide needed services to older adults.

In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between their passions and their life choices. Participants will receive a video to be viewed prior to the workshop, which will serve as the initial prompt for the work. Using writing and movement, participants are invited to develop their own strategies for responding to the New Now.

Omi Osun Joni L. Jones’ work is committed to exploring strategies for promoting healthy communities through personal Joy. She is an artist/scholar/facilitator who employs Black Feminist aesthetics in her performance work, her pedagogy, and her consulting. She has performed at The New Black Fest (NYC), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), and Links Hall (Chicago), and has served as a workplace facilitator with Thousand Currents (Oakland), NoVo Foundation (NYC), and Soladaire (Bay Area). Her dramaturgical work includes August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean and Shay Youngblood’s Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery—both under the direction of Daniel Alexander Jones, as well as Sharon Bridgforth’s conflama under the direction of Laurie Carlos. Her scholarship has appeared in The Drama Review, Obsidian, and Theatre Journal as well as solo/black/woman and Blacktino Queer Performance. Her most recent book is Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Àṣẹ, and the Power for the Present Moment (Ohio State University Press). She is Professor Emerita from the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

In this new virtual series, performers and scholars reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face in this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the following are key attributes of Learning Health
Systems:

• Having leaders who are committed to a culture of continuous learning and improvement
• Systematically gathering and applying evidence in real-time to guide care
• Employing IT methods to share new evidence with clinicians to improve decision-making
• Promoting the inclusion of patients as vital members of the learning team
• Capturing and analyzing data and care experiences to improve care
• Continually assessing outcomes, refining processes and training to create a feedback cycle for learning and improvement

The LHS Collaboratory's fall seminar series virtual kick-off event will showcase the LHS experiences of three research-intensive academic centers that have been promoting LHS methods. We will be joined by distinguished senior colleagues from Duke,Vanderbilt, and Washington University, who will describe and discuss their institutions' work in this area. They will discuss strategies employed, investments made, challenges encountered, and successes achieved.

Panelists:
Kevin B. Johnson, MD, MS, FAAP, FACMI, Vanderbilt University
Christopher J. Lindsell, PhD, Vanderbilt University
Philip Payne, PhD, FACMI, Washington University
Michael Pencina, PhD, Duke University
Eric G. Poon, MD, MPH, Duke University
